Paper The Impact of First-year Higher Education Students’ Critical Thinking Skills and Well-Being on Academic Achievement 1: Univeristy of Eastern Finland, Finland; 2: University of Helsinki, Finland; 3: University of Jyväskylä, Finland Presenting Author:This study examines how students’ critical thinking (CT) skills and well-being are associated with their academic achievement during early stages of higher education. Understanding these connections is important because these factors play a central role in studying and learning in higher education. CT is defined as purposeful, self-regulatory, and goal-directed thinking, combining a set of cognitive skills and affective dispositions (Facione, 1990). This study focuses on CT skills such as analysis, evaluation, and interpretation (Facione, 1990). CT is recognized as a key learning outcome in higher education (Arum & Roksa, 2011). The European Union has also emphasized the importance of CT in managing the complexity and constant change of today’s society (European Comission, 2019). Well-being refers to optimal psychological functioning, encompassing both hedonic (happiness) and eudaimonic (personal growth) perspectives (Ryan & Deci, 2001). Well-being includes the feeling of relatedness (Ryan & Deci, 2001), or the sense of belonging, defined as students’ feeling of being accepted, included, and connected to their institutions (Goodenow, 1993). Academic achievement can be defined and measured in multiple ways, but commonly used indicators include grade point average (GPA), the weighted average of course grades, and earned study credits (ECTS), which reflect students’ progress toward degree completion (van Rooij et al., 2018). Although these metrics do not directly assess learning outcomes or competency development, they serve as practical and widely accepted proxies for academic performance (York et al., 2015). The study addresses the following research questions: (1) To what extent do first year students’ CT skills explain their academic achievement in their first year of higher education studies? (2) To what extent is students’ well-being connected to their first-year academic achievement? One of the key skills for successful achievement and progress in studies is CT (e.g. Martín-Raugh et al., 2023). Cognitive strategies such as problem solving, reasoning, analysis, and interpretation - core components of CT (Facione, 1990) - form the foundation of students’ readiness for higher education and enable them to learn content across disciplines (Conley, 2008). However, students enter higher education with widely varying levels of CT skills (Arum & Roksa, 2011). Previous studies have shown that the majority of Finnish first-year higher education students demonstrate CT skills at a basic or lower level (Ursin et al., 2021), and international research indicates that some entering students may lack these skills altogether (Zahner et al., 2022). Given the critical role of the early months in higher education, this study investigates students’ well-being and CT skills upon entry to higher education studies to determine whether these factors are associated with academic achievement and study progress. By exploring these relationships, we can better understand the factors that contribute to early academic performance and identify students who may be in need for support. Academic achievement, as measured by GPA and ECTS, is important already at the beginning of studies as some institutions require minimum credit accumulation or GPA threshold for continued study. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This is a quantitative study using data collected as a part of a national research project in 2023-2025. The participants of the study are 901 first-year undergraduate students from a Finnish higher education institution, representing multiple fields of study. The participating students’ CT skills were measured with the Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA+) which is designed to measure higher education students’ CT and written communication skills (Zahner et al., 2022). The CLA+ includes two tasks. The first task is an open-ended performance-based task (PT) in which students write an essay based on provided material. The PT measures analysis and problem-solving, writing effectiveness, and writing mechanics. The second task is a selected-response task (SR) in which students choose the correct answer from given answer options based on provided material. This task is designed to measure scientific and quantitative reasoning, critical reading and evaluation, and critiquing an argument. The well-being of participating students was measured with two sets of questionnaires: a shortened version of The Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale (WEMWBS), referred to as SWEMWBS (Stewart-Brown et al., 2009) and a sense of belonging scale modified from PISA 2018 (OECD, 2020). SWEMWBS consists of seven positively worded items relating to the participants’ mental well-being in the two preceding weeks (Stewart-Brown et al., 2009). The sense of belonging scale includes six items in which students reflect their experiences of belonging to their institution and relationships with other students (OECD, 2020). Academic achievement and study progress were operationalized using students’ GPAs and accumulated ECTS credits, as recorded in an institutional student register between August 2023 and August 2024. Data will be analyzed using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, as well as correlations, conducted in IBM SPSS Statistics (Version 29). The main analyses exploring the extent to which students’ CT skills and well-being explain academic achievement will be conducted using linear regression analyses. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings At the time of writing this proposal, data of academic achievement is still being collected, consequently, no analyses have yet been conducted. Nonetheless, we expect to expect to find that students with stronger CT skills also perform better in their studies (e.g. Martín-Raugh et al., 2023). We also expect that students who experience better well-being to be more successful in their studies despite previous research suggesting the connection to be relatively modest (Bücker et al., 2018). The results of this study can be used to better support students’ transition from upper secondary to higher education and thereby supporting the upcoming academic journey. As this study is based on cross-sectional design, it includes inherent limitations. To gain a deeper understanding of how well-being, academic achievement, and CT skills development interact among higher education students’ educational paths, more research is needed. Paper I Would Always Attend If I’m Getting Points’: A Value-Perspective Study of University Lecture Attendance University of Helsinki, Finland Presenting Author:Background, aim and theoretical approaches Physical attendance at university lectures has been declining internationally (Nagappan et al. 2025), despite long‑standing evidence linking attendance to improved learning and achievement (Ancheta et al. 2021). Class attendance is generally not mandatory at Finnish universities, reflecting Finland’s autonomy-based education model (Ursin 2019), which often allows students to choose whether to attend lectures or study independently.Finnish universities are tuition-free which, in theory, reduces financial pressure for students, enabling them to focus on their studying. However, because students do not incur high personal costs for their education, there is less perceived financial ‘loss’ from skipping lectures, which may lower the incentive to attend lectures regularly. Students’ limited engagement with lectures highlights the need to understand what drives their attendance and research has identified motivation as a key predictor of lecture attendance (Fryer et al. 2018). Given this fact, it’s important to understand more clearly the motivations associated with classroom attendance. The aim of this qualitative study is therefore to explore university students’ motivation to attend on-site lectures at two universities in Finland. The theoretical frame chosen for the study is the expectancy–value theory (EVT) (Eccles and Wigfield 2020, Wigfield and Eccles 2020; 2023). The study focuses specifically on the values students associate with certain tasks as well as the costs that come with the choices students make (Wigfield and Eccles 2023). Task value is composed of four main factors: a) utility value, referring to how useful a certain task is for a student, b) attainment value, referring to the perceived personal importance that a student attaches to a given task, c) intrinsic value, referring to the enjoyment or interest derived from performing the task itself and d) extrinsic value, defined as the perceived value of a task based on external rewards (Eccles and Wigfield 2020). Research indicates that value beliefs are strong predictors of interest, persistence, and achievement across educational levels (cf. Wigfield and Cambria 2010). In addition to values, the EVT model incorporates a cost component, reflecting the perceived negative implications of engaging in a task. The three cost dimensions most commonly discussed in research literature are: (a) effort cost, which refers to students' perceptions of the amount of effort or time needed to complete a task; (b) emotional/psychological cost, which relates to students' fear of failure or perceptions of the negative emotional impact of engaging in a task (Wigfield and Eccles 2000), and (c) opportunity cost, which involves students' perceptions of the activities they must forsake in order to focus on a task (Flake et al. 2015). Students’ task values and costs are in turn shaped by beliefs formed through prior educational and sociocultural experiences (Wigfield and Cambria 2010). Socializers—especially teachers and peers—play a central role in shaping these beliefs and behaviours (Wigfield and Eccles 2023). Similarly, teachers’ pedagogical methods matter: interactive methods such as group discussions consistently increase lecture attendance in higher education (Bukoye and Shegunshi 2016). Our research questions are therefore; 1) What are the values and costs the students attribute to their attendance in class? and 2) What is the impact of socialisers and teachers’ pedagogical methods on how students value lectures? Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Design and approach. We adopted a qualitative, exploratory design using semi‑structured interviews to capture lived experiences of lecture attendance motives across disciplines. EVT served as a sensitising framework, guiding initial deductive codes for task values (utility, intrinsic, extrinsic, attainment), costs (effort, emotional/psychological, opportunity/time), and the (non‑salient) expectancy for success construct. Setting and participants. The study took place at two Finnish universities (one large research-focused; one specialised business school) where attendance is generally voluntary. We recruited 28 students (aged 21–40; 23 female/5 male) from medicine (n=10), economics (n=11), and educational sciences (n=7), reflecting distinct disciplinary cultures and common urban commuting patterns. Convenience sampling was employed due to accessibility and timelines. Ethics. The study followed national ethical principles for human sciences research in Finland; formal institutional review was not required given adherence to informed consent, confidentiality, and anonymisation. Pseudonyms were used, identifying details were removed, and interviews were scheduled outside formal teaching contexts to mitigate power dynamics. Participation was voluntary and without grading implications. Data collection. We conducted 24 semi‑structured interviews (including two small group interviews) in Swedish or Finnish during 2023–2024, lasting 10–30 minutes, either online or face‑to‑face. The interview matrix (developed collaboratively and piloted with five students) covered demographic/context questions and core prompts on attendance behaviour, perceived lecture value, enjoyable aspects, activity levels, and discouraging factors. Transcripts were produced with university‑licensed tools, verified against audio, and anonymised. Analysis. Guided by Braun and Clarke’s six steps, analysis proceeded abductively. We loaded transcripts and theory‑aligned code definitions into Atlas.ti, independently double‑coding ~10% (three interviews) to establish coding reliability (~80% agreement), resolving discrepancies by consensus. Subsequent coding was performed collaboratively by authors ÅM and CB, with iterative discussion to maintain consistency. Triangulation compared thematic convergence/divergence across individual versus group interviews. Inductive refinement addressed data that resisted initial categories: notably, time and opportunity were merged; logistical/financial/safety aspects were nested under effort cost as contextual expressions affecting feasibility. A decision trail documented code evolution, merges/splits, and adjudication of competing interpretations. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Findings This study clarifies how students reason about attending on-site lectures in voluntary‑attendance settings. Utility value emerged as the strongest motivator for students to attend lectures. They preferred lectures that gave them more than they could get from self-study —for example, clear explanations, helpful examples, and guidance on future professional practice. Students were also more likely to show up when they simply found the topic interesting, even if the teaching style varied. External incentives mattered too: when attendance earned points, students often described their decision as a straightforward calculation to avoid losing marks. The main reasons for not attending (costs) were practical and emotional. Students were less likely to attend lectures when attending required extra time or when they felt they could learn the same material faster on their own. Emotional barriers—such as fear of being put on the spot or discomfort in tense classroom environments—further discouraged attendance. Students judged whether the time, energy, or stress involved in attending was justified by the benefits of the lecture. When the drawbacks felt greater than the benefits, skipping the lecture seemed like a reasonable choice. Socialisers influenced students’ motivation in various ways. Teachers who created a safe atmosphere, encouraged participation, and showed how course content connects to real situations made lectures feel more worthwhile. Guest lecturers were especially motivating because they helped students see the relevance of what they were learning. Peers also played a role: having friends in class, hearing about discussions, or not wanting to miss out made attending feel more appealing. In addition, teaching methods mattered mainly because they shaped students’ perception of a lecture as useful or enjoyable. Paper Educational Assessment and the Construction of ‘Ability’ Deakin University, Australia Presenting Author:Higher education is commonly portrayed as a transitional space where students not only learn certain skills but also become someone new. The ‘ontological turn’ in higher education research has shed light on how such processes of being and becoming do not occur in the abstract, but take place in the day-to-day activities of teaching and learning (Barnett & Coate, 2004; Dall’Alba & Barnacle, 2007; Zembylas, 2017). In this study, we explore assessment as a particularly powerful institutional practice in shaping how students are ‘known’ in higher education – and know themselves – as more or less capable future professionals. Assessment is often portrayed as a powerful practice in shaping student learning, yet it also shapes students themselves (Godfrey-Faussett & Baird, 2025). We focus particularly on how assessment constructs the very notion of ‘ability’ it seeks to measure. Our starting point is that assessment serves not only a pedagogical function, whether summative or formative, but also an ontological one. We approach the questions of self and identity through a cultural approach that recognises the role of assessment practices in shaping how students become ‘known’ within institutional frameworks of practice. We draw on the sociology of Ray McDermott and Hervé Varenne (1995, 2006) in conceptualising ‘the self’ as a dynamic relationship that emerges as people become known in culturally and historically constituted discursive frameworks of practice. In our study, we generate knowledge about the self as a cultural product through spoken narratives. Focusing on students’ identity narratives – stories about who they are as more or less capable students – we wish to better understand the role that assessment plays within these narratives. For, “narratives do not merely describe what someone does in the world but what the world does to that someone.” (Mattingly, 1998, p. 8) We are particularly interested in how assessment shapes cultural conceptions of ‘ability’ and ‘able students’: what kinds of institutional frameworks of practice are organised to construct ‘abilities’ and how such ‘abilities’ then become attached to students’ understanding of who they are. What is already known about how assessment shapes students within the higher education institution? Perhaps most notably, assessment and grades are directly related to future prospects and life opportunities, and, in doing so, regulate who students are, are becoming, and can become (Reay & William, 1999). Yet beyond such overt mechanisms, assessment also shapes potential, normal and ideal ideas of ‘being a student’ in more hidden ways. This has been noted by critical scholarship, which has often claimed that assessment and grading systems foster competitive, customer-oriented and neoliberal student bodies (see Raaper, 2016). On the other hand, higher education institutions often wish to harness assessment to shape students into particular kinds of future professionals. For example, much of the work on ‘professional identities’ has explored how assessment can help students become the unique selves they aspire to be (see the review by Nieminen, 2025). Yet, despite emergent interest in how assessment shapes the stories students tell about themselves, what remains undertheorised is the ontological mechanisms by which assessment practices constitute ‘abilities’ and ‘able students’. Clearly, assessment sets the parameters for how we talk and think about ‘success’ and ‘failure’ in higher education; high grades denote success, failing courses denotes failure, and so forth. But how exactly does assessment organise ‘success’ and ‘failure’? To explore this question, we conducted an empirical analysis of nine university students’ identity narratives. We focus on students with learning disabilities and mental health issues, as it is these students whose ways of knowing and being have historically been marked as ‘disabilities’ – the opposite of abilities (Nieminen, 2023). Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used To generate knowledge about students’ stories about who they are in this world with respect to their ‘abilities’, and the role of assessment therein, we analysed nine Finnish university students’ ‘ability narratives’. The origins of the project are in a postdoctoral research project that aimed to understand how assessment marginalises disabled students (Nieminen, 2023). In this project, nine students with various learning disabilities and mental health issues were interviewed about their experiences of assessment and disability-related assessment adjustments (e.g., additional time in examinations). These interviews were narrative in nature, meaning that students were actively asked to generate stories about ‘who they are’ (rather than what they do) with respect to assessment. We analyse these nine interviews using a culturally oriented narrative analysis. We do not see ‘disability’ (and ‘ability’ for that matter) as a stable identity category, but instead as a cultural achievement that requires careful coordination across cultural practices, including disability advisors, assessment designers, medical diagnosis documents, and inclusive higher education policies (following McDermott & Varenne, 1995, 2006). Based on students’ ‘ability narratives’ of who they are and what they can do in assessment, we aimed to understand the narrative boundaries that assessment sets for talking and thinking about these matters. Our analysis does not focus on students’ perspectives on ‘ability’ and ‘success’ as in many earlier studies (notably Godfrey-Faussett & Baird, 2025), but instead sheds light on how ability is organised around assessment as a cultural practice. Typically, such narrative work has focused on the voices of ‘winners’ such as high-achieving students (e.g., Yu & Luo, 2025), yet we argue that it is necessary to generate new theorisations based on the ‘neglected cases’ of those whose abilities and identities have been placed into the margins of higher education, such as indeed students with disabilities (following Krause, 2024). In practice, we analysed each student's individual ability narrative, following the guidelines for cultural analysis by McDermott and Varenne (1995, 2006). We then conducted a synthesis of these nine narratives by asking: What is assessment doing to these students? How does assessment organise these students with respect to ‘ability’? Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Our preliminary analysis has uncovered that assessment shapes students’ ability narratives in three metaphorical ways: - Assessment as a silo: assessment separates students ontologically from each other and produces ‘ability’ as an individualistic attribute - Assessment as a mould: assessment standardised ‘ability’ by organising it around carefully standardised, predetermined notions of success (e.g., test scores) - Assessment as a ladder: assessment positions individuals into hierarchical relationships with each other, organising success and failure around competition Within the cultural framework of ‘being a student’ in assessment, our nine participants organised their identity narratives around notions of individual failure in standardised assessments, particularly examinations. They described being ‘behind’ other students with higher grade point average scores. We conclude that, in higher education, assessment can be seen as a cultural apparatus heavily invested in failure (McDermott & Varenne, 2006, p. 11). We call for further conceptual attention to how assessment sets the boundaries for being an ‘able’, ‘normal’ and ‘ideal’ student within culturally organised frameworks of ‘ability’. We see a political dimension in such ontological work, following Zembylas (2017), as that line of inquiry would encourage higher education scholars to critically ask whether the ‘work that assessment does’ to shape students aligns with the stated purposes of the university.
