Paper Caught Between Monitoring and Relating: An Ethnographic Study of Datafication Practices in Teacher Work Åbo Akademi University, Finland Presenting Author:In recent years, attention has globally been drawn to what is perceived as an educational challenge of increased school attendance problems (Kearney & Gonzálvez, 2022; Tunkkari et al., 2025). In parallel, teachers’ workload has been noted to increase (Creagh et al., 2025), a tendency influenced by increased demands for data reporting, including documenting students’ attendance at schools. On a policy level in Finland, the problem of school absenteeism has been thought to most efficiently be tackled by accurate attendance data that can help predict which students are at risk for developing habits of much school absence, leading them to being left behind educationally (OKM, 2023). This focus builds on the assumption that accurate and large amounts of data are needed to be able to understand the scope of the social problem of school absenteeism and create profiles of at-risk students that should be targeted with early interventions. In 2021, a project aimed at reducing the number of absences and creating a unified monitoring system for the creation of statistics on school absence was launched by the Finnish Ministry of Education, targeting all compulsory education for 6-18-year-olds (OKM, 2023). The project led to an amendment in the Basic Education Act in 2023, requiring schools to “prevent absences and systematically monitor and intervene in them” (OKM, 2023, p. 5). In this policy environment, the understanding is that absence is an indicator for student well-being (Kearney & Gonzálvez, 2022) and that the datafication of students’ schooldays will improve data management (Bodén, 2016), providing data to be able to find out how to lower the rates of absence. Until 2023, there was, in Finland, no unified statistics on school absences or a standardized way of gathering said data due to municipal autonomy (Sandhaug et al., 2022). The report introduced ready-made categories that every school had to collect data on using a school administration platform. The report did not state which platform had to be used, but at the time in 2021 to the present day, Wilma (provided by the private multinational corporation Visma) is used by nearly all Finnish educational institutions, from early childhood education to secondary education. Therefore, Wilma is at the center of the monitoring of absences in Finland. In this article, we scrutinize the intertwining of platformization of education and teachers’ work regarding the supervision of students’ attendance at school. We refer to this intertwining of usage of platforms and teachers’ educational work as datafication practices. The aim of this study is to ethnographically understand teachers’ datafication practices as these unfold intertwined with the teachers’ professional considerations and the affordances provided by a school platform. Thus, we strive to identify how platform choices determining what is technically and socially possible on the platform are informing pedagogical practices. How are teachers enacting datafication as part of their professional practices? Through our study, we draw attention to how the platform is used to tackle what is constructed as the problem of unattendance through the regime of datafication, realized through teachers’ datafication practices. Through an abductive process during and after fieldwork, our analysis came to focus on three aspects of datafication of education (Pangrazio et al., 2024): reduction, abstraction and individualization. Reduction entails the practice of reducing complex social phenomena to single data points in a predefined categorization system. Abstraction points to the fact that said social phenomena are abstracted from their embedded social contexts, including the abstraction of data from the platform itself. Lastly, individualization calls attention to the fact that datafication turbocharges a neoliberal form of competition, measurement and comparison between individuals to be able to categorize them based on their datasheet. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study was realized as an ethnographic case study, following teachers’ work at a lower secondary school for five months (August–December in 2024). Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork at a lower secondary school, by making the invisible visible (Star, 1999), we home in on entanglements of Wilma usage and teachers’ everyday work. We approach Wilma use from an infrastructural perspective that can highlight mundane practices that are not actively made visible or made aware in studies with predetermined categories of analysis (Star, 1999). This requires us to account for the ways in which Wilma is immersed in, transforming, and transformed by material infrastructures (Taylor, 2025). We embrace, rather than avoid, the contextual richness and diversity to increase our understanding of the complexities in the communities, contexts and settings under scrutiny. For the ethnographic fieldwork, both authors have followed the work of two lower secondary teachers’ work during three full school weeks each in August, October, and December 2024. In other words, we have 6 weeks of participant observation and, additionally, we have conducted digital walk-along interviews with these teachers, as well as the principal, the municipality’s superintendent and two secretaries working at the school. The digital walk-along approach (Møller & Robards, 2019) allowed the participants to guide us through their use of Wilma in relation to the reasoning behind their professional practices. The empirical data we employ for our analysis consists of fieldnotes from our participatory observations (77 pages in total) and transcripts of the interviews (approximately 4,5 hours in total). Furthermore, our analysis considers two policy documents; the school’s personnel handbook (62 pages) and a regional project report on school absences (32 pages). In our analytical work, we trace the many “relevant connections and boundaries” (Hine, 2007, p. 620) between the infrastructural platform (Wilma) and the participants. Inspired by Latour’s (2005, p. 237) suggestion to “follow the actors”, we follow connections between sites and spaces to account for the diverse ways in which Wilma takes place and is given place in everyday life at school. We focus on the interplay between platform (Wilma) and teachers’ datafication practices connected to the documentation of students’ attendance on Wilma. By tracing connections and following them wherever they may lead us, we can account for participants’ own understanding of the full range of social practices instead of limiting them and fitting them into our categories (Latour, 2005). Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Our preliminary findings point towards an emergent understanding of the teachers’ enactments of datafication as part of their professional practices as “Wilmafied” teaching. Both of us registered and discovered connections between Wilma, teachers, students and a focus on monitoring while building relationships with students through a constant oscillation between relationship building as trustworthy adults and monitoring students’ attendance. Wilma is a platform that intricately forms connections between teachers, students, and caregivers with its most apparent and clear focus on documenting where the student is at which time of the school day. The most prevalent checkpoints for this monitoring are the beginning of each lesson. In a way, students ‘sign in’ by proxy (through the teachers’ datafication practices) to the lesson as they step into the classroom, thus reducing the complexity of what it could mean to be present in a teaching situation. Those who do not ‘sign in’ require the teacher to do data work to find out where they are and which category their absence should be recorded under. This entails both abstraction and individualization as the platform is not designed to grasp the contextual complexity of the unique situations, nor the social setting. Our analysis led us to find the teachers being caught between monitoring and relational work towards the students. Although the argument for doing this kind of monitoring is connected to care and trust, teachers encounter the mistrust students are voicing towards monitoring. Thus teachers continuously struggle between installing discipline instead of building relationships emanating from mutual recognition. The programmed mistrust that seems to be inherent in the logic created by the intertwined nature of monitoring practices and the platform’s design is clearly visible in situations when documentation that is supposed to be neutral is understood as a disciplining activity by students. Paper The Role of Ethnography in a Changing World – Human-machine Interplay in Everyday (educational) Life. University of Inland Norway, Norway Presenting Author:The rising prevalence of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) and widespread use of digital technology in schools raises questions about how relations between humans and machines influence human relationships, how we perceive knowledge, and how power is distributed in educational spaces at all levels. In this paper, I will discuss what role educational ethnography can play in understanding these questions and why participant observation and long-term ethnographic fieldwork play an important part in understanding a changing world for both educators and pupils/students. The research question for this paper is “What role can ethnography play in understanding social relationships in educational settings shaped by digital technologies and GenAI”? In my own ethnographic fieldwork with middle school boys in Inland Norway, I saw how digital technology and social media permeated their social life and understanding of the world around them. This is true for Norwegian schools in general, as over 90% of Norwegian pupils have access to personal digital devices at school (The Norwegian Directorate for Education and Training, 2024), 94% of 9-11-year-olds have their own cellphone, and 84% of youth between 9 and 18 use social media (The Norwegian Media Authority, 2024). Furthermore, the rise of GenAI gives both optimism and concern to educators, pupils, students, parents, and others. The prevalence of digital platforms and the growth of AI make it crucial for educational science to understand how these platforms fit into pupils’ and students’ lives, and what they are doing to and for them. Einar Duenger Bøhn, for instance, worry that delegating reading and writing to GenAI affects our ability to think, know, and learn, and that relying on an outside authority (the AI) when thinking and working counteracts the possibility of being enlightened and educated (2024). This paper will discuss ethnographic approaches to understanding the intersection between digital and non-digital everyday lives, how they influence each other, and how we can access and understand the rapidly changing worlds of young people in educational settings. To do so, I will combine perspectives on ethnographic fieldwork in the more traditional sense from the late Norwegian anthropologist Signe Howell (2018), where ethnography is presented as long-term and holistic in scope (p.2), with newer approaches to digital ethnography or netnography (Miller, 2018; Kozinets, 2019). Netnography is described as a way of gaining cultural understanding through “systematic, immersive, and multimodal use of observations, digital traces, and/or elicitations” (Kozinets & Gretzel, 2024, p.1). I will discuss how these approaches can be combined, and whether a new ethnographic ‘ideal’ is necessary to grasp the world as it currently is, perhaps in the form of a patchwork ethnography (Günel & Watanabe, 2023) that includes digital spaces. A methodological discussion regarding educational ethnography in a changing world is connected to the kinds of questions we ask as researchers. Our methodological choices need to address whether the digital and non-digital can be neatly separated in any sensible way, how we can follow our participants into and between platforms and spheres online and offline, and how we can trace influences going back and forth between spheres. Furthermore, we must consider what an educational space currently is, as self-improvement, learning, and growth is often sought after in online spaces in forums, YouTube, and social media. And what role does AI play in all of this? This paper will not answer all these questions but discuss how ethnography can contribute to a deeper understanding of these topics. These discussions and questions are broadly of interest to the field of educational ethnography, not just the Norwegian context. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The current paper is a contribution to methodological discussion about the shape and use of the ethnographic method, and what it can contribute to in new and changing contexts. The discussion will therefore mostly be derived from written sources about ethnography, such as the beforementioned texts from Howell (2018), Kozinets & Gretzel (2024), and Günel & Watanabe (2023). I will include occasional references to my own field experience. These field experiences are lifted from a year-long fieldwork in a school in Inland Norway in 2020, where I collected data for my Ph.D. project. The project focused on identity formation among boys in middle school and examined how 6th and 7th-grade boys performed and negotiated their identities through the lenses of gender and social class (Toft, 2024). I did participant observation at the school from January to December, and went to the school every day, where I sat with them in class, engaged with them during recess, and joined them for meals and activities. The observations were collected in a notebook throughout the day and elaborated in a Word document at the end of each day of observation. At this point, an initial analysis was performed where I tagged each segment of the field notes with descriptive words of what the segment contained. The notes were later read and re-read, and the tags were elaborated and connected. During my participant observation, I had access to pupils and teachers in the school context, as well as the occasional field trip out of the school grounds. This means that some of the perspectives I will present in this paper stem from aspects lacking from my own field experience that I wish I had access to. For instance, I frequently took note of conversations about social media, gaming, and online interests, but did not have access to the pupils on the platforms they were discussing. The class I observed got school-issued iPads during the year I was there, and this is the basis of my own field experience of the interaction between pupils and digital platforms. Furthermore, my fieldwork was conducted in 2020, which is before GenAI was made widely available to the public. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The broad conclusion to my contribution to the discussion outlined above is that ethnography as a method has a unique possibility to capture and understand nuances in everyday lives online and offline, and to make connections between spheres of engagement. Partly, this is because ethnography, built on long-term engagement with participants, often has broad and holistic research questions and scopes, and is therefore well-suited to make connections that are “more or less taken for granted by the people themselves” (Howell, 2018, p.3). Therefore, ethnography and netnography are useful methods, as they do not limit their scope to one sphere of social life, but rather follow participants between spheres. My argument is that educational ethnographies' contribution to understanding topics such as the digitalization of schools and the spread of GenAI in educational spaces is exactly the broadness in scope that allows us to understand the space in the participants’ lived lives these platforms, technologies, and ideas occupy, and how they interact with other aspects of their lives. Furthermore, the broad scope of ethnography enables us to follow participants to where learning and education happen, even if it is not within formal educational institutions, such as the use of the consumption of self-growth content on social media, or the role of AI in looking for and acquiring knowledge. Paper Platformisation, Datafication and Educational Governance: A Case Study of Education in Castilla y León Universidad de Valladolid, Spain Presenting Author:This paper analyzes the educational impact of the development and use of digital platforms in school contexts, with a special focus on digital governance processes, the platformization of education, and the expansion of datafication systems in secondary education. This research focuses on two levels. First, it highlights the impact at the pedagogical level, that is, on the teaching-learning process. Second, it focuses on the implications at the organizational level and seeks to explore how digitization has changed the dynamics of the school with students, families, teaching teams and departments, management teams, training centers, and administrations. The first part presents a theoretical overview focusing on the main debates on digital governance in education, technological acceleration, and educational transformation on a global scale, as well as the ways in which these processes are being appropriated and reinterpreted by different actors in the educational community. It shows how the deployment of digital infrastructures is redefining education systems on a global scale (Perrota et al., 2021). Recent research indicates that the intensive adoption of educational software and hardware, accelerated especially during the pandemic, has produced profound transformations in school governance, based on imaginaries that prioritize efficiency, measurement, and optimization of educational processes through increasingly automated algorithmic logics and coding systems (Decuypere et al., 2021). The study draws on the concept of socio-technical imaginaries to examine how certain views on digitization, artificial intelligence, and the educational use of data shape pedagogical, organizational, and management practices in educational institutions. Based on a case study conducted in the autonomous community of Castilla y León, in Spain, it analyzes the perceptions and experiences of the educational community in relation to the use of digital platforms, paying attention to their impact on teaching and learning processes, school organization, teacher professional autonomy, and educational governance. The results show how digital platforms, especially Microsoft 365, are reshaping school governance through anticipatory logic, automation processes, and new teacher training models, with significant effects on educational practice and the organizational culture of schools. They reinforce techno-solutionist approaches to educational improvement, while introducing new forms of managerialism and educational marketing linked to artificial intelligence systems and predictive algorithms, with effects on educational processes at different scales (Swist & Gulson, 2023). The study concludes with a series of reflections and proposals aimed at rethinking digital governance from an educational perspective, focusing on digital sovereignty, the critical use of data, and the strengthening of professional autonomy in secondary schools. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The research is based on a biographical-narrative approach (Chase, 2015; Denzin and Lincoln, 2015; Rivas Flores, 2014), focused on the analysis of narrative productions through which participants construct meanings and practices in relation to the use of digital platforms in secondary schools in Castilla y León. This approach allows us to understand how socio-technical imaginaries are configured and how they influence educational and organizational practices. The research strategy employed is technography, understood as a hybrid approach that combines elements of digital ethnography with technological analysis (Bucher, 2018). This strategy facilitates the examination of the effects of coding, algorithms, and datafication processes present in the Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) of Microsoft's educational platforms, considered “black boxes” that establish operating rules and condition educational practices (Perrota et al., 2022). The data collection instruments include thirteen semi-structured interviews with members of the educational community in public and charter preschools, elementary schools, and secondary schools, aimed at analyzing their interaction with digital platforms and their impact on school governance and teaching practice. This educational community includes teachers, families, administrative staff, and training center staff. Discourse Analysis methodology is adopted for data coding and analysis, combining Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Political Discourse Analysis (PDA) procedures. This hybridization allows us to examine how discourses on digitization, platforms, and artificial intelligence shape certain models of educational governance and project specific visions of the future of education (Fairclough & Fairclough, 2011). The analysis is supported by the use of Atlas.ti 23 software through open, selective, and inductive coding processes. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The case study conducted in Castilla y León highlights how the expansion of digital platforms is redefining educational governance frameworks, significantly influencing pedagogical practices, school organization, and the professional role of teachers. The results show that the educational community tends to use platforms based on pre-established designs, which limits the possibilities for pedagogical innovation and reinforces certain logics of educational capitalism based on intensive data management. The research allows for a descriptive analysis of the role played by data and algorithmic systems in shaping educational processes, as well as the tensions that exist between efficiency, control, and professional autonomy. In this regard, opportunities to promote a more critical and reflective use of digital technologies are identified, aimed at strengthening educational quality, democratic participation, and the decision-making capacity of schools and teachers. In light of the results, one of the most pressing issues is the need to move towards a framework of educational digital sovereignty in the context of Spanish schools. This framework should be geared towards establishing digital transformation guidelines that prioritize pedagogical, ethical, and educational criteria, foster professional autonomy, and promote responsible and transparent use of data. The study highlights the importance of rethinking the role of digital platforms in schools, not only as technical tools, but as infrastructures that profoundly shape governance, school culture, and the future of education.
