Work Discussion is a psychoanalytic oriented method which is used for the analysis and reflection of interactions and relationships in educational and other psychosocial work settings with a particular focus on emotions and their regulation. Developed at the Tavistock Clinic in London, the Work Discussion method consists of written reports describing work situations. These reports are presented and discussed in small groups during regular meetings led by experienced seminar leaders. The primary task is to develop a deep understanding of the close relationship between the conscious and unconscious aspects of internal and external processes, as well as their impact on the dynamics of work situations with a special focus on emotions and their regulation.

Work Discussion is used in the context of research and in the context of training (or further education), enabling professionals to take a deep understanding of work dynamics into account when acting in their roles (for example as teachers, social workers, counsellors ect.).

Participants of this workshop will have the opportunity to learn about the practical use of the Work Discussion method and its theoretical background. In the first part of the workshop, the chairpersons will outline the basic principles of the method and its theoretical background. Particular emphasis will be placed on the influence of emotions (feelings, affects), the importance of the containment of emotional processes and group dynamics. Participants will then have the opportunity to take part in a work discussion seminar, which will be simulated during the second part of the workshop. In the third part of the workshop, participants will share and discuss their impressions and experiences. The chairpersons will also discuss how educational researchers at the University of Vienna are investigating the learning processes that are initiated and supported by Work Discussion.
