Paper Climate Change and Climate Fiction in Secondary School Classrooms – a Narrative Literature Review Mälardalen University, Sweden Presenting Author:This paper contributes with knowledge about the didactic potential of climate fiction for young learners’ action competence in the context of ongoing climate change. One of the greatest global challenges of our time is the escalating climate crisis, which raises questions on scientific, political, and existential grounds. There is still no comprehensive picture of what sustainable development of society looks like and/or how it is organized. Teachers therefore have the challenging tasks of teaching both what we know and also what is still unknown (Sund & Öhman, 2025; Nordh et al., 2025; Jickling, 1994). Teaching about sustainable development, democracy and specifically the hyperobject climate change can also raise questions in the classroom that teachers may find difficult to address (Sund & Öhman, 2025; Morton, 2013). The concept of sustainable development has had a prominent place in Swedish national curriculum since 1994 (Skolverket, 1994). However, a recent inspection by the Swedish Schools Inspectorate found that few schools achieve high-quality work on sustainability issues (The Swedish Schools Inspectorate, 2023). The inspection shows that, instead of connecting larger structural changes at the societal level to the democratic system within sustainable development, students emphasize their individual and everyday responsibilities, such as sorting waste and limiting consumption. This can lead to feelings of indifference instead of engagement and action competence. Teachers in Sweden have predominantly worked with environmental and climate issues within the natural and social sciences, as well as in interdisciplinary projects, where environmental education in schools tends to be normative (Andersson Hval & Aijmer Rydsjö, 2021). Normative teaching can certainly contribute to understanding of how to behave sustainably but leaves little room for complex issues that engage on a personal level (Öhman & Kronlid, 2019). If students are to be able to think creatively and imagine alternative futures, which is the basis for a democratic approach, then access to qualitative, emotionally grounded, lived experiences is needed. One way for schools to develop their work on sustainable development is to make the multifaceted nature of the climate issue visible through climate fiction (Andersson Hval & Aijmer Rydsjö, 2021). Climate fiction is a relatively young genre, originating from science fiction, sci-fi, with increasing popularity in libraries and schools as well as in research contexts (Andersen, 2019). Climate fiction provides pedagogical opportunities for examining future challenges at the intersection of social sustainability, climate change, and justice. (Nordh et al. 2025; Andersson Hval & Aijmer Rydsjö, 2021; Lindgren Leavenworth & Manni, 2021). While interest in climate fiction as a teaching resource has grown within Nordic and European research, its educational use is still relatively unexplored, which highlights the need for a deeper understanding of its didactic potential. This paper is a narrative literature review focusing on articles on Environmental & Sustainability Education, ESE and literature education with Climate Fiction in European schools. Focus is both on the didactic potential of climate fiction and teachers’ didactic choices, as well as how these can promote students’ understanding of and action competence in sustainability issues. The questions asked are: How is the topic theorized? What teaching methods are being used? Is Climate Fiction seen as a solution to something? How is the climate issue problematized and/or addressed in teaching? What are the young learners’ responses to the climate fiction texts? The findings will form the basis for a theoretical understanding and for the continued implementation of practical research in grades 7-9. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The first stage of research will soon be in progress and will start by February 2026 and be completed in August 2026. The aim of the literature review is to identify opportunities and issues surrounding literature selection and teaching methods which will then stepwise be tested in sub-studies with selected climate fiction in my ongoing thesis work. The narrative literature review guided by systematic principles is inspired by the model proposed by Juntunen and Lehenkari (2019). The choice to do a narrative literature review is based on the premise that the collection of literature is both freer and broader compared to a more comprehensive systematic literature review (Gregory & Denniss, 2018). As climate fiction is a relatively young genre, access to literature is limited, and a broader search across several databases will therefore be needed to gain a deeper understanding of the research topic from both a literary didactic and an environmental and sustainability education perspective. The choice of narrative overview is also based on Baumeister and Leary (1997) with the aim to integrate and synthesize findings from multiple studies across different disciplines to interpret or illuminate a particular phenomenon. This study will integrate two didactic fields: Environmental and Sustainability Education (ESE) and Literature Didactics, which is the basis for the choice of narrative literature overview. Methodologically, this narrative review will be conducted iteratively with cycles of reading, reflection, and refinement interspersed with structured searches with clear inclusion criteria, and selection, analysis, and writing based on data collection and our interpretive understanding of the field (Siddaway et al. 2019). The databases used are Scopus, ERIC/EBSCO and Web of Science. To coordinate interpretation and systematic selection, log all decisions for transparency and traceability, Covidence is being used as a review tool. In this study, the exclusion criteria are non-formal, university and pre-school to obtain as concise and narrow results as possible, with a focus on secondary school. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings An initial exploration and preliminary search to test keywords indicates that work with climate fiction in secondary schools is not extensively researched yet and that a broader search is necessary. With 22 hits in Scopus and 28 in ERIC/EBSCO in December 2025 and January 2026, 5 abstracts were initially selected for a first overview reading with relevance to this study's research questions. These selected abstracts are all within the period 2020-2025, with the majority from 2025. The selected articles provide a preliminary indication that climate fiction in schools has the didactic and pedagogical potential to approach climate change issues in the classroom. The selected articles also indicate that climate fiction in education is a field on the rise and that there is a great need for further studies with a practical approach in the area. This narrative literature study offers a critical synthesis of selected literature and contributes to ongoing academic discussions within the fields of ESE and literature education. The expected outcome will make visible the research landscape on climate fiction and critically discuss teaching based on climate fiction and more broadly teaching in the field of climate change. Further contributions to the field include gaining qualitative insights into experiences, perspectives, and meanings related to climate change issues, subjectification, meaning making and literature didactics in the classroom. The narrative literature review represents an opportunity to connect conceptual resources from the didactic potential of climate fiction with the didactic implications in continued practical research in the later years of secondary school. This narrative study contributes to the mapping of future research needs for addressing climate issues in secondary classrooms within the fields of climate change education and literature education. Paper Epistemic shift through relational storytelling: A teaching anthology for Environmental Education University of Cambridge, United Kingdom Presenting Author:In a time of poly-crisis, environmental and sustainability education (ESE) is increasingly asked to respond to conditions that exceed conventional curricular reforms or behaviour-change models. Yet dominant forms of schooling often remain organised by logics of separability and individualism that constrain what kinds of educational futures can be imagined. This paper presents the final stage of a doctoral project that uses the architectural stage of Levitas’ (2012) Utopia as Method (UAM) as a research-creation approach to the question: what pedagogies, practices, and structures might support an ontological shift in ESE, toward relational, decolonial, and more-than-human ways of being and knowing? This doctoral work is rooted in the premise that the stories we tell and those we hear shape our openness (or closedness) to certain ways of being. While often treated as supplementary or illustrative within educational research, storytelling has historically been central to philosophical inquiry itself: from Plato’s dialogues and parables, through Rousseau’s (1762) ideas on education by narrating the fictional story of young Émile, to Simone de Beauvoir’s (1949) personal narratives and anecdotes to explore the lived experiences of women. This project situates itself within that lineage, treating story as a philosophical method of world-making, not simply a representational device. In this sense, the project aligns with a tradition in which philosophy is concerned with how concepts live in the world rather than only how they are defined. Building on earlier UAM stages (archaeological and ontological), this final stage translates diffractive insights into philosophical and pedagogical possibilities through an imaginative and practice-oriented repertoire that teachers can adapt to contemporary educational contexts. Conceptually, the work takes a decolonial and posthuman approach to ESE, understanding pedagogy as an emergent relational field rather than a fixed container of methods and practices (Barad, 2007; Hemara, 2000; Krenak, 2020). Pedagogy is framed as something that arises with and through human, more-than-human, and technological relations. This paper argues that in the present moment, ESE research must do more than critique dominant paradigms; it must also support educators in imagining alternatives that can be lived and reshaped in context. The architectural stage, therefore, takes up imagination as methodology –inviting writer and reader to imagine themselves, as well as the world, otherwise (Levitas, 2012)–while remaining accountable to the institutional and ethical conditions under which teaching takes place. Through philosophical creative writing as research-creation, a speculative ‘teaching anthology’ designed as a pedagogical companion for teachers emerges. Methodologically, the anthology follows Loveless (2019) in treating research-creation as a form of theory-making, using creative practice as an intervention into what counts as knowledge and how educational futures can be imagined. The project proposes a form of philosophical pedagogy that travels through resonances rather than replication. The international dimension of this contribution is twofold: First, it addresses the shared pressures shaping European schooling systems, such as standardisation, digital platformisation, and teacher workload, while recognising that poly-crisis is diversely lived across geographies and histories. Second, it positions ESE as an internationally contested field of knowledge production, proposing a form of research communication that can travel across contexts without forcing it into a universalised template. Stories and invitations within the teaching anthology are intended to be locally understood rather than exported as policy-ready solutions. The presentation will share the methodological approach to this story-based research-creation, as well as the selection of pedagogical commitments and design invitations within the anthology that demonstrate how ontological shifts can be translated into classroom-relevant possibilities without collapsing into replicable technique. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study adopts philosophical creative writing as research-creation. Research-creation utilises creative or arts-based practices that permeate both the form of research as well as its form of dissemination (Kitchin, 2023; Loveless, 2019). As a practice, research-creation is both embodied and experiential, engaging simultaneously with discourse, symbolic, and imagined meanings, meant to allow for exploring new questions, different approaches to addressing problems, and innovative methods of expression (Kitchin, 2023). It is a knowledge-generating process in which the creative artefact is simultaneously the site of inquiry and the primary research output. In this design, writing becomes the apparatus through which philosophical and pedagogical possibilities are explored and reconfigured. Creative writing is understood as a practice that can denaturalise dominant academic discourse, interrupt inherited habits of thought, and generate different conditions for educational futures. In this sense, the method is not simply arts-based, but epistemological, concerned with how knowledge itself comes to matter. This project also explicitly positions research-creation as philosophy-creation. When philosophy is understood as an artistic endeavour, the questions philosophers ask change too (Stuhr, 2018). When approaching art, one does not seek evidentiary enclosure by asking “Is it true?” or “Where is the evidence?” but instead asks questions like “Does it illuminate my experience,” “Is there meaning?” or even “‘What happens, what is transformed, if I become attuned to this narrative?’” (Stuhr, 2018). In this sense, the aim is not to prove a pedagogical model, but to compose conceptual–affective scenarios that make alternative educational ontologies phenomenologically available, feelable, and thinkable. The writing emerges through an assemblage that includes diffractive insights from previous research, which I briefly summarise into a speculative teaching anthology of various stories designed as a pedagogical companion for teachers. Each story is accompanied by annotations, or philosophical-pedagogical reflections that pause and notice ontological shifts, and invitations, or practical design openings for teachers across assessment, self-checks, and learning design. The anthology is structured around six Movements that emerged from the previous stages of research’s diffractive inquiry and are translated here into practice-facing provocations: relational onto-epistemologies and the work of repair, entangled histories, embodied and place-based knowledges, unknowability and the refusal of closure, collections of agencies, and resistance and interruptions. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The intended contribution of this paper is both methodological and theoretical. Methodologically, it offers research-creation as a rigorous form of philosophy-making within ESE, where creative practice generates theory. Theoretically, it proposes relational, decolonial, and posthuman orientations as resources for reimagining what education can be in the poly-crisis. Together, these shifts contribute to contemporary debates in ESE by focusing on how ontological and pedagogical ‘innovations’ can be made real, offering a mode of critical-pragmatic philosophy that treats pedagogy itself as a site of world-making. Through creative writing as research-creation, the study demonstrates how educational research can move beyond critique toward imaginative educational futures. The speculative teaching anthology is not necessarily a prescriptive framework, but a pedagogical companion to support educators in experimenting with relational, temporal, epistemic, and political shifts under real institutional constraints. The key outcome of this work is a conceptual reframing of pedagogy as an emergent relational field: a living ecology shaped by histories, land, bodies, technologies, uncertainties, and ethical responsibilities. In this framing, teaching is something that arises with and through relations. For ESE research, this suggests a new role. Rather than primarily producing policy-ready knowledge or scalable interventions, education research can act as a philosophical and methodological practice of re-attunement: shaping the conditions under which different ways of knowing, being, and relating become possible. This includes cultivating comfort with uncertainty, resisting epistemic closure, and legitimising affective, narrative, and speculative forms of knowledge alongside analytical ones. Paper Nature-Inspired Stories: Examining the Effect of Biomimicry-Based Storybooks on Preschool Children’s Environmental Awareness 1: Marmara Üniversitesi, Turkey (Türkiye); 2: Esenyurt Üniversitesi Presenting Author:General description Biomimicry is an approach that aims to develop innovative and sustainable solutions to human problems by drawing inspiration from living systems, structures, and processes in nature (Benyus, 1997). As a concept, biomimicry first emerged in 1982 and reached a wider audience with Janine Benyus’s book Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature published in 1997. Benyus defines biomimicry as follows: “Biomimicry is learning from and then emulating natural forms, processes, and ecosystems in order to create more sustainable designs” (Kenny et al., 2012, as cited in Fıstıkçı & Gündüz, 2021). There are many products and structures developed by drawing inspiration from nature. For instance, the Eastgate Centre in Harare, Zimbabwe, was designed by drawing inspiration from the natural ventilation systems of termite mounds, enabling the building to maintain stable indoor temperatures without the use of energy-intensive air-conditioning systems (Tzonis, Lefaivre, & Slogno, 2001; as cited in Avcı, 2019). Similarly, Swiss engineer Georges de Mestral’s observation of the hook-like structure of burdock seeds led to the development of the Velcro fastener, now widely used across various fields (Geyik Değerli, 2020). These examples illustrate how imitating natural structures can result in innovative and functional design solutions In an educational context, biomimicry has gained value as a pedagogical approach that enables children to perceive nature not only as a learning object but also as a teacher and a model system. Learning in the preschool occurs through observation, imitation, and hands-on activities, which makes the application of biomimicry in education both natural and effective. . The biomimicry approach enables children to develop skills for understanding natural processes through structural and behavioural models in nature (Mart, Kesicioğlu, & Gökhan, 2024). According to the study by Mart et al., observing the solutions that living organisms develop for the challenges they encounter enhances creative thinking and problem-solving skills in children. In the context of environmental education, storybooks support children’s abilities to become familiar with nature, develop awareness of environmental issues, and foster positive attitudes toward the environment (Erten, 2005). According to the study by Ergül (2023), the use of illustrations in picture storybooks, photographs of living beings in nature, and models showing the relationships between organisms facilitates children’s process of applying the biomimicry approach. For example, when the phrase 'flying like a bird' is used in a classroom, a child can research what is needed to build a flying device after examining visuals that depict the diverse flight characteristics of various bird species. Existing research shows that environmental education in early childhood is predominantly implemented through direct instruction, drama, or field-based activities (Kaçak Tümer & Kaya, 2023; Jirásek, Čutová, & Jirásková; Güvenir & Türkmen, 2024; Uçar Çabuk & İşal, 2023). However, no experimental studies have been identified that examine the effects of biomimicry representations in storybooks on children’s environmental awareness. In this context, the present study is considered original in that it tests, within a quasi-experimental design, the assumption that biomimicry-oriented story narratives can support children’s understanding of the nature–human–design relationship and contribute to the development of environmental awareness. In this context, the present study aims to examine the effects of biomimicry-based storybooks on preschool children’s environmental awareness. The study evaluates whether storybooks that incorporate systems inspired by living organisms contribute to an increase in children’s environmental awareness. Research Questions
Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Methodology The study group consists of 30 children attending the same preschool, one classroom assigned to the experimental group (n = 15) and the other to the control group (n = 15). This study is designed as a quasi-experimental study within the framework of quantitative research methods. In a quasi-experimental design, experimental and control groups are formed without random assignment. Both groups are administered a pre-test before the intervention and a post-test after the intervention. This study will utilize the non-equivalent control group pre-test/post-test quasi-experimental design, which is the most common among quasi-experimental designs, where experimental and control groups are selected without random assignment (Creswell, 2017). The primary reason for choosing this design is that participants are assigned to groups from their existing classes without random allocation. Experimental and control groups, each consisting of 15 participants, will be formed. The independent variable of the study is the activities conducted through biomimicry-based storybooks, while the dependent variable will be the levels of children's environmental awareness. The data collection instruments for this study consist of a Demographic Information Form and the Environmental Awareness and Attitude Scale for Preschool Children (EAASPC). EAASPC is a tool developed to assess both environmental attitudes and environmental awareness of children aged 60–66 months. The scale consists of 26 items across two sub-dimensions: Environmental Attitude (14 items) and Environmental Awareness (12 items). Before the study begin, ethical and institutional approvals will be obtained, and parental informed consent will be secured. After obtaining all required permissions, the Environmental Awareness and Attitude Scale for Preschool Children will be administered as pre tests to the experimental and control groups before the intervention. The experimental group will participate in biomimicry-based activities for six weeks, implemented twice weekly through biomimicry-based storybooks integrated activities lasting 30–60 minutes. EAASPC will be administered as a post-test to both the experimental and control groups. Following the post-test, the same activities will be provided to the control group. Data will be analysed using SPSS. After examining data distribution, pre-test scores of the experimental and control groups will be compared using the Mann–Whitney U test, while within-group pre-test and post-test differences will be analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. Post-test scores will be compared using the Mann–Whitney U test to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Expected outcomes The study is expected to provide an innovative perspective on preschool environmental education practices, make the effects of biomimicry-based pedagogy on children’s environmental attitudes more visible, and offer practical recommendations for teachers and educational researchers. A review of the literature indicates that studies on biomimicry are generally limited in number (Mart et al., 2024; Yüncü et al., 2024), and that research focusing specifically on early childhood is particularly scarce (Ergül, 2023). In his study, Ergül (2023) discusses the theoretical applicability of biomimicry-related studies in the preschool period but emphasizes that experimental and practice-based research in this field remains limited. In preschool education, biomimicry is often addressed indirectly within STEAM-oriented activities, particularly within bio-inspired design and basic robotics applications. The present study aims to contribute to the literature both theoretically and methodologically by addressing biomimicry not merely as a component of a design or interdisciplinary approach, but as a concept and learning experience in its own right. The findings are expected to enrich discussions on the scope, rationale, and applicability of story-based biomimicry practices in early childhood programs and to provide concrete recommendations for educators. In this respect, the study constitutes an experimental investigation employing biomimicry-based pedagogical tools and aims to fill an important gap in the field of biomimicry within environmental education while generating original results transferable to preschool educational practices.
