Paper ***WITHDRAWN*** Beyond Clean Clothes: Forest Kindergarten as a Platform for Parental Environmental Education The Maria Grzegorzewska University, Poland Presenting Author:In the era of the poly-crisis characterized by climate instability and a deepening "nature-deficit disorder" (Louv, 2008) forest education emerges as a vital response in the European educational landscape. While forest kindergartens have long traditions in Scandinavia and Germany, the movement in Poland is relatively young, with the first institutions appearing only in 2015. Despite this late start, the growing network of Polish forest kindergartens offers a unique laboratory for observing how nature-based education interacts with urban, often nature-alienated, lifestyles. This study shifts the focus from the child to the parent, conceptualizing the forest kindergartens not merely as a childcare facility but as a space for adult environmental education and a way to counteract the nature-deficit disorder in the whole family unit. The research is grounded in Transformative Learning Theory (Mezirow, 1991) and the nature connection framework, which identifies specific pathways to fostering a bond with the natural world (Lumber et al., 2017; Cudworth & Lumber, 2021). The disorienting dilemma experienced by parents confronting their children’s exposure to dirt, cold, and perceived risk serves as a catalyst for potential shifts in their own environmental worldviews and a source of inspiration for sustainable development through experiential pedagogy. This paper explores the tension between parental expectations of traditional "safe/clean" education and the reality of forest pedagogy in a post-communist, urbanizing society. The study aims to demonstrate that forest preschools can trigger a "domino effect," where children’s experiences pull entire families back into nature, fostering sustainability practices within the domestic micro-system. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The study employed a qualitative case study design, focusing on the "Wesoły Smok" (Happy Dragon) Forest Kindergarten located in Warsaw, Poland. This site was selected as an example of an urban forest preschool where children are commuted from various city districts, often from families with limited daily contact with nature. The main research question was: How are work and relationships organized at the Happy Dragon Kindergarten? The collected data was intended to answer several specific questions. In the context of this presentation, the most important question to answer will be: In the opinion of kindergarten staff, what characterizes parents and their children who use the kindergarten's services? The primary data collection method consisted of unstructured, in-depth interviews conducted in October 2024. The purposive sample included 7 participants: the headmaster and 6 teachers. All interviews were audio-recorded and subsequently transcribed. Data analysis followed a thematic coding approach using MAXQDA software. The analysis proceeded in several stages: 1. Deductive and Inductive Coding: Initial codes were generated based on the research questions (deductive), while new codes were allowed to emerge during the data immersion phase (inductive). 2. Thematic Clustering: The transcripts were read multiple times to identify recurring patterns. Segments were assigned to thematic clusters. 3. Synthesis: The final stage involved interpreting the coded fragments to answer the specific research problems. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The findings reveal a dual typology of parental attitudes. The first group undergoes a transformative process: despite initial discomfort with dirt or wet clothes, they prioritize their child's developmental joy and adopt practical "taming" strategies (e.g., using protective car covers, bringing extra clothing sets). This group demonstrates an evolving acceptance of nature’s unpredictability. The second group exhibits persistent resistance often treating the "all-weather policy" as a hyperbolic warning rather than a reality. Although this may result in the child being transferred to another facility, in the case of the Wesoły Smok kindergarten, this happens very rarely. Over time, parents become involved in the work of the kindergarten in various ways. Some begin to change some of their habits under the influence of their children. In societies where early childhood education is universal, forest kindergartens provide an unique opportunity to educate parents by proxy. By normalizing nature-immersion and risk-taking, these institutions challenge the urban alienation from the environment. Although the study does not allow conclusions to be drawn about every forest kindergarten, it does indicate the potential of these institutions to change parents. Paper Young People Reversing Pedagogical Relations in the Planetary Crisis Tampere University, Finland Presenting Author:Emerging research shows how planetary crisis causes worry to a significant amount of young people around the world (see e.g. Hickman et al. 2021). Although, for example, the political dimension has been found to shape experiences of climate concern more strongly than generational differences (Marlon et al. 2022), studies have shown that many young people believe they know more about the planetary crisis than older generations do and are more concerned about the situation than older people are (Reilly et al. 2024). This perception of being more knowledgeable than older generations brings tension to the pedagogical relation, which has implications to the roots of education. Traditionally education theorists (e.g. Friesen, 2017; Saevi, 2015) define pedagogical relation as the relationship between the educator, who is typically an adult, and presumably someone who has achieved full competence to function in society, and the one being educated, the educatee. This feature of the relationship gives power and pedagogical responsibility to the educator to guide and educate the educatee towards competences needed and valued in society. But in these times of existential threat many young people feel a need to educate older people, to turn around the traditional order of the pedagogical relation. In an international study, many young people described teaching adults about climate change as a duty they have to do, because they have gained more information about climate change than adults have (Reilly et al. 2024, Mansikka-aho et al. forthcoming). This phenomenon of young people teaching adults has not been investigated with educational concepts. Although there are empirical studies on intergenerational learning, which have explored how young people can teach adults most efficiently (e.g. Chineka & Yasukawa, 2020; Lawson et al. 2019), but there is thin theoretical work on the phenomenon (see Mannion, 2016). In this presentation I will outline the normative concept of ‘reverse pedagogical relation’ (hencefort ‘RPR’). In more detail I will especially look what kind of a role self-cultivation plays in it. When an educatee has gained epistemic authority through acquiring knowledge of planetary crises that the educator lacks, the conventional framework of pedagogical relations is being destabilised trough RPR, as described before. Compared to traditional pedagogical relation, RPR is typically more fleeting in nature, happening often momentarily, due to the fundamental position of authority that older people typically occupy. In this way, the ‘reversal’ of pedagogical relations occurs in specific instances, but less rarely as turned around ‘fully’. Because the inversion unfolds inside the traditional pedagogical relation, young people need some other means of pedagogies than adults do. In RPR the educatee wants to have an impact on their educators’ thinking and behaviour. This is done, for example by an attempt to impact educators own process of self-cultivation. Kallio (2023, 160) defines self-cultivation as “a goal-oriented educational activity directed at the self, in which a person develops her or his own thinking, her or his ability to reflect on her or his feelings and her or his own actions in a relational relationship with other people, the environment and society”. Traditionally self-cultivation is defined as something only adults do and it is seen as a goal of the education itself (see e.g. Bohlin, 2008). In this inquiry I look how young people, the educatee’s already uses self-cultivation. The core aim of the study I present is to further develop the conceptual framework of RPR by combining it with the concept of self-cultivation. The objectives of this study are underpinned by the following two questions:
Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This inquiry is philosophical, and part of the field of philosophy of education. Therefore, it does not have a method in a similar manner like traditional qualitative or quantitative research. Methods in philosophical inquiry are critically viewed and questioned by many scholars (see e.g. Fulford & Hodgson, 2016; Heyting et al., 2001; Ruitenberg, 2010). However, philosophical inquiry does have methods even though the philosophers debate on them. Ruitenberg (2010, 2) defines the philosophical methods as “the various ways and modes in which philosophers of education think, read, write, speak and listen, that make their work systematic, purposeful and responsive to past and present philosophical and educational concerns and conversations”. In my study I will analyse the concept of pedagogical relation in relation to the times of planetary crisis. This is done by following the lead of Katariina Holma’s (2010) process of analysis and synthesis. I will disassemble the concept of pedagogical relation and stress it with the view of today’s young people’s historical situation and experiences. With an analysis of what is missing from the concept of pedagogical relation, I will reassemble it by complementing it with self-cultivation. I aim to conceptualise what is happening to the pedagogical relation in our times on planetary crisis, where some young people think they know more about planetary crisis and want to impact their educators thinking and behaviour. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The study is still in the beginning; therefore it does not have conclusions yet. But expected outcome is a synthesis of the two concepts: pedagogical relation and self-cultivation, which are mirrored with the experiences of today’s young people. The conclusions will have a new conceptual framework of revise pedagogical relation. The presentation will discuss how environmental education could benefit from this new conceptual framework. Paper Galapagos Children’s Example for Environmental Education through the Poly-Crisis: Engaging Experientially and Emotionally for Knowledge and Action University of Oxford, United Kingdom Presenting Author:The Galápagos is a small archipelago of 21 main islands located about 1,000 km off the coast of Ecuador. One hundred years after the islands were made famous by Darwin’s On the Origin of Species, they were declared a National Park of Ecuador and subsequently added to the list of UNESCO Natural World Heritage Sites in 1978 (‘2 COM VIII.38 - Decision, Review of Nominations to the World Heritage List’, 1978) both actions drawing more international attention to the enchanted isles. In addition to a plethora of intriguing non-human species in the natural world, the islands are also home to ~30,000 human residents, and within that number, ~7,500 school aged children, who live near the internationally renowned natural space. Distinctly, there are no people Indigenous to the islands, meaning that the human communities in Galapagos are recently-established, and effectively, introduced species to fragile ecosystems (Hennessy, 2019). While Indigenous knowledge is present on the islands through migrant Indigenous communities who, like all other residents of the islands, have moved there from either Ecuadorian, or international regions, this research focuses on how an introduced human population can effectively build robust and deeply affective conservation through equally robust and affective environmental education and learning.
Despite this unique arrangement, and tremendously successful case study in conservation and locally-supported sustainability efforts, there is little research on and with Galapagos human communities to both understand and further hone local initiatives and to serve as a valuable example for international urgency in biodiversity conservation amidst the global poly-crisis. Even further, research with the youngest generation of Galapaguenos, about the environmental education and learning that they engage with in their home ecosystems, has received paltry attention academically and internationally.
This study aims to fill these gaps. Research included fieldwork with younger children in the Galapagos Islands, with an aim to understand how they physically and practically engage with the local natural world, how they think about and value both their home ecosystems and how that translates to value and care for international ones they learn about, and if and how environmental emotions play a role in shaping their lived environmental education. In effect, this research strives to learn from Galapagos children how to preserve and encourage more humanity in how we learn about, care for, and preserve the natural world, and more ecocentrism in how environmental education and learning is framed. In the context of the gravity of the environmental polycrisis, all parts of which have been instigated and exponentially worsened by human impact, exploitation of the ecosphere, and anthropocentric global human powers, I am keenly interested in how Galápagos children construct and use Local Ecological Knowledge (LEK) to engage in ecocentric stewardship of the ecosphere and “[return] to the protection of nature for nature's sake” (McCauley, 2006, p. 27).
This research is important not only for informing and furthering conservation efforts in the Galápagos, but essential for questions of how children engage with environmental concerns, what their worldviews and knowledge are and how adults might use data produced from children to best equip them and adult-run programs to lead stewardship and conservation locally and globally. As Durham (2021) notes, “Galápagos is a valuable test bed for the sustainability challenges facing the whole of planet earth” (p. 302). Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study draws from empirical fieldwork conducted on two of the four inhabited Galapagos Islands, Santa Cruz and San Cristóbal, over the course of three months, working with 337 9-10 year old students from 18 schools. Engagement with children in the islands followed essential child-centric theoretical framing, leaning on the theory of Childism (Wall, 2022), to decentre dominant adult lenses and assumptions that endanger misrepresentation and misinterpretation, in addition to unjust and inequitable engagement with children resulting in the omission of their actual thoughts and ideas, let alone their emotions. All data were collected in Spanish, the local language, to further create equitable and comfortable data sharing contexts for children. he research is situated within an interpretivist constructivist epistemology, and within additional frameworks of ecocentrism, Sumak Kawsay (Knapp, 2019), deep ecology (Naess, 1973), and post-anthropocentric theories (Keating & Merenda, 2013) which centre the ecosphere and moves away from a hierarchical approach to humans and nature. Mixed methods were employed to most effectively learn from children at scale - using a short localized and locally-edited (with organizational leaders) survey instrument, and to engage with children using methods that allowed them to speak and act freely within a research structure. Qualitative methods used were 1-1 outdoor go-along interviews and outdoor focus groups with 8 children per class. Go-along outdoor interviews allowed for children to lead paths of walking through school grounds (child safeguarding measures in place), to actively reference, physically engage with, and share knowledge and emotional responses to the natural environment. Outdoor focus groups were also child-led, with the researcher taking a position of learner, instead of teacher or leader, which allowed for the expression of peer-to-peer knowledge sharing and positioned children as sharers and teachers of ecological and environmental knowledge and emotion. Both interviews and focus groups were audio-recorded and supplemented with researcher fieldnotes. All three data sources covered question and discussion topics around presence of local ecological knowledge, sources for that knowledge, and emotional and value-questions in regards to the local environment and particularly local endemic and native biodiversity. Analysis of survey results focused on descriptive statistics to broadly, but accurately, describe the local ecological knowledge of children, in addition to qualitative analysis of long-form answers around emotion and value in connection with environmental learning and experiences. Audio files from interviews and focus groups were transcribed in Spanish and then thematically coded and Braun & Clarke’s (2012) thematic analysis guidance. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Children in the Galapagos affirmed, resolutely, the possibility for recently-established human populations to have incredible efficacy when it comes to learning about, engaging equitably and openly with, and framing our human position in relation to ecosystems as an ecocentric one. Children not only shared robust and complex local ecological knowledge about their Galapagos environment, but did so with deep and nuanced threads of environmental emotions, and with emphasis on frequent and thoughtful experiential engagement with the natural environment. Children set an example for how to weave humanity through environmental education and learning, and how to not only practice, but encourage the recognition and evolution of resulting environmental emotions which further solidified their ecocentric and value-driven insistence on protecting and continuing to learn about their local biodiversity and ecosystems. In effect, they show how an evolved environmental education that incorporates child-led experiential learning within local environments, observations of direct human impact on and within local environments, and environmental emotions, can effectively support and drive pro-environmental outcomes. How do we keep our humanity, essential for effectively creating the change we want to see in a rapidly-changing world currently plagued by environmental destruction and branches of the poly-crisis, strong and active? Children in Galapagos share powerful banks of local ecological knowledge, built through frequent experiential and emotion-laden engagement with their local environment. These experiences and emotional coding helps them to form deep, reliable, and recallable banks of knowledge about their environment and about the direct impact of humans within that and broader global environments. This work serves as not only a case study for experiential and emotionally-driven environmental education, it also provides a template for international work within environmental learning.
