Paper I Know It’s Important But... Climate Education and Political Socialization in Young People in France and Belgium. UCLouvain, France Presenting Author:This contribution proposes to present the preliminary observations from the ongoing Marie Curie project KidsOnClimate, which looks at the impact of the emotions generated by learning about the climate crisis in the context of other political crises, on the way tweens and teens feel about politics more broadly. Drawing on qualitative data from France and Belgium, it therefore discusses how such learning experiences, most particularly in the school context through environment or sustainability education, feed into their attitudes towards democracy, and political representation. It particularly looks at how classroom and school contexts, most notably agency, classroom climate and feelings of being listened to might be linked to both/either political engagement and disengagement, self-efficacy or alienation. Through the analysis of empirical interviews with young people it looks at the relationship between responses to the climate crisis and other perceived crises – most notably the rise of the far right, masculinism, and war. Drawing on literature in social psychology, political sociology, and environmental education, it explores the relationship between the way young people learn about and discuss the climate crisis and the feelings that arise from that learning, and attitudes towards perceived government and political responses to those events. It suggests that the “eco-emotions” frequently documented among young people can usefully be understood from the perspective of political sociology as a collective response to this crisis as well as an individual one, and that we need to see beyond the binary classifications of flight or fight, action or inaction. This study particularly explores the idea of “climate fatigue” (Lachance 2025), expressed by some of the young participants, who remain concerned about the climate crisis in principle, but in practice express feelings of “saturation.” This is linked to Kari Norgaard’s understanding of “denial” (Stevenson et al. 2014; Walshe et al. 2024; Brownlee et al. 2013), as a collective phenomenon that involves learnt selective attention. Here we suggest that this is more than just distancing as a coping mechanism for distress (Ojala 2012; 2015 Léger-Goodes et al. 2025), but is linked to the way in which the climate crisis is presented to these young people through the school system (Walshe et al. 2024; Brownlee et al. 2013; Stevenson et al. 2014). Rather than considering this a purely individual psychological response, the participants themselves link these emotions to their lived experiences of how climate education is taught at school in France and Belgium. This study bridges several existing divisions in the literature, in particular due to its focus on younger teens and tweens, exploring the evolutions that may occur in understandings of politics and democracy more broadly, as individuals move out of late childhood and into adolescence (Bessant 2004; Wunderlich 2025; Kessler 2021). As a result, this contribution will explore how learning in one area (climate change education) can impact the development of feelings and attitudes in a broader area (attitudes towards democracy and participation), through notions of political efficacy and democratic relationships (Gniewosz et al. 2009; Innocenti et al. 2023). This research focuses particularly on the notion of “ordinary youth”, who are neither activist nor apathetic, as a population that is often not visible in the literature, and thus seeks to overcome the vision of young people as either engaged or disengaged, enthused or disillusioned (Harris et al. 2010). More particularly, it asks how opportunities for the development of political competence arise in different school contexts, and the impact of the objective reality of different school systems and structures and how these factors may impact the influences – positive or negative – of climate education on young people.
Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The empirical research for this project is ongoing, and this presentation therefore concentrates on the qualitative interviews that have been conducted to date. In-depth qualitative interviews are currently being conducted with young people aged 10-17, using life-history and projective techniques, to explore their experiences and memories of learning about climate change, inside and outside school, and how those memories tie into their feelings about the issue today, compared to and in relation with other political issues. These interviews presented detailed reflections on their experiences of learning about the climate crisis, between primary school (age 10) and late secondary school (age 17). They provide rich accounts of the emotions generated by this learning, the young peoples’ understandings of the benefits and problems associated with how it is taught in different contexts, and what they see as possible solutions. These interviews are conducted with young people in France and Belgium, in public schools and in private schools – these two national contexts already provide elements of comparison (national framing of climate crisis, competing political issues such as the rise of the far right, and national environmental education curriculum), as do the school contexts themselves (traditional hierarchical pedagogies, mixed pedagogies, and active alternative pedagogies). They are therefore analyzed against the background not only of political context but also national curriculum, comparing between schools that follow state-mandated sustainable development curriculum, and those who adopt alternative approaches incorporating systems theory and more politicized perspectives. These different pedagogical and national contexts may impact on what young people take away from climate education, and the kinds of emotional responses they are left with. These emotional responses are linked to their own feelings of agency, or disconnection from political issues more broadly. These interviews are transcribed and analyzed using qualitative analysis software Atlas.ti. The preliminary results, and implications for ongoing fieldwork are presented here, along with hypotheses to explore implications for theory and policy. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Preliminary analysis suggest these expected outcomes: - We expect to see students refer to the impact of school structure on their emotional availability to engage with these questions – initial results suggest that fatigue (homework, graded exercises on these issues), availability (time spent at school), student-teacher relationships and trust (democratic relationships or strict hierarchical relationships), and student agency and voice (feelings of student self-efficacy, legitimacy in discussion, and being heard) are important factors. This is likely to be strongly impacted by the national curriculum and school system (public/private, traditional/alternative pedagogy) they are enrolled in. - We also expect students to refer to the impact of the structure of climate education curriculum, specifically the fact that they see a lot of climate-related themes repeated over the years, but without increasing depth or complexity, leading to an impression of repetition, exhaustion and saturation with the theme without necessarily achieving genuine climate literacy. Again, this will likely vary depending on curriculum structure. - Preliminary analysis suggests we will also some students voice a degree of frustration with the lack of politicization of this issue. In situations where climate education is primarily included as part of the science or geography curriculum and not presented in terms of systems theory, historical evolutions, or political and interest-based decisions, this could lead to depoliticization of the issue, student frustration, and disengagement, even among students who care about climate change. This frustration will likely tie into an observed desire among high-school students to have more political education in schools (Bozec 2018; Tam 2023), and that although they are enthusiastic to take on that role, they say they do not feel sufficiently prepared for their role as citizens. Again, this is likely to vary according to cultural context and national curriculum. Paper Empirical Cross-Country Comparison of Participation in Climate Protests Using a Novel Dataset 1: University of Education Freiburg/Pädagogische Hochschule Freiburg, Germany; 2: The Monitoring and Evaluating Climate Communication and Education Project (MECCE) Presenting Author:The need for a more sustainable world is increasingly urgent, with the effects of climate change and biodiversity loss being undeniable. Yet these issues are often denied (Bliuc et al., 2015) or downplayed, despite widespread support for climate action (Andre et al., 2024). Consequently, climate activists advocate for measures across various levels to promote sustainability. Data reflect a significant increase in climate protests since 2019 across different regions, highlighting growing public concern about environmental degradation, resource scarcity, and policy inertia. Recognizing protesters’ aims underscores the importance of fostering awareness, activism, and political literacy as part of sustainability education. The MECCE Project, a six-year partnership funded by the Canadian government, aims to enhance global climate communication and education (CCE). Involving over 100 scholars and agencies—including UNESCO and UNFCCC—it develops a set of indicators (see https://mecce.ca/data-platform/) to monitor progress across six UNFCCC-defined CCE components (UNFCCC, 2021). One key component is Public Participation (UNFCCC, 2016). Youth-led climate protests and direct actions serve as important measures of public participation. Accordingly, the MECCE project has collaborated with partners to review strategies for measuring the nature and extent of (youth) activists’ involvement in climate actions worldwide. In this presentation, we discuss the challenges of measuring (youth) participation in climate protests and share results derived from exploiting a novel protest database. Specifically, we aim to address the following research questions: Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Our approach involved reviewing several protest data sources, including ACLED, GDELT, Harvard’s Crowd Counting Consortium, Count Love, the Nonviolent Action Database, Fridays for Future (FFF) Strike Statistics, and the Strauss Center’s Conflict Database. After evaluating their scope, coverage, and relevance, we selected the ACLED dataset due to its extensive geographic scope, detailed event coding, and capacity to filter climate-related protests. Its comprehensiveness makes it particularly suitable for analyzing global climate protest dynamics (since 1997) within our research framework. ACLED (Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project) is an independent, impartial conflict monitor providing real-time data and analysis on political violence and protests worldwide (https://acleddata.com/about-acled). It sources data from four main types: 1. Traditional Media, 2. Reports, 3. Local Partner Data, 4. New Media (targeted and verified) (ACLED, 2024). The platform emphasizes rigorous verification and provides detailed contextual information (see https://acleddata.com/knowledge-base/ and https://acleddata.com/about/our-team). Our first data retrieval was planned for January 2025, using keywords “sustaina” OR “climate,” resulting in 14,434 events categorized as protests or riots. Notably, 84% of these events occurred in Europe and North America, indicating regional overrepresentation. Nonetheless, the dataset covers all SDG regions, providing a broad, albeit uneven, global perspective. Conducted at the start of 2025, this snapshot of protest activity may evolve with future data updates. Within the ECER conference, we focus on European climate protest data, noting that 60% of events involve Fridays for Future, Extinction Rebellion, or Last Generation, with over half occurring in Sweden or Germany. Still, we aim to highlight protests in the Global South, emphasizing diverse regional contributions to global climate activism. Since our dataset cannot directly assess protestors’ literacy or knowledge levels, we rely on literature-based research and prior findings indicating that protest participation often correlates with higher sustainability literacy (e.g., Waltner et al., 2022) and education levels (Wahlström et al., 2019, Wallis & Loy, 2021). Research on climate protests and associated databases is emerging, bringing certain limitations and challenges. The data faces potential regional biases and reporting discrepancies. Estimations of crowd sizes often vary depending on the source—organizers may inflate numbers, opponents may underreport, and source consistency varies worldwide. As a result, ACLED does not record crowd size as a separate variable; instead, crowd size, when available, is included as a tag in each event (ACLED, 2023). When no estimate is available, it states “crowd size=no report”. Similar biases—omission, inflation, misrepresentation—are discussed in Miller et al. (2022). Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Other research findings connected to protest participation suggest that actively fostering youth’s political participation and democratic involvement in climate-focused collective actions, such as the F4F movement, can be a viable strategy for sustaining their sustainability motivation (see Waltner et al., submitted). On a societal level, encouraging youth political engagement not only strengthens democracy but also empowers the next generation to actively contribute to policies driving and shaping their environmental and social future and thereby fostering their efficacy beliefs (Hammann & Resse, 2020). Participating in collective action fosters a sense of agency, empowerment, and purpose, which can mitigate feelings of despair often associated with awareness of climate crises (Pihkala, 2020). In addition to these findings, engaging in climate action has been shown to enhance hope in youth, serving as a crucial coping mechanism in the face of climate anxiety and eco-distress (Hickman et al., 2021; Ojala, 2012). By promoting hope and resilience, climate-focused collective actions not only address mental well-being but also sustain youth engagement and long-term commitment to sustainability goals. Paper Women and Girls at the Heart of Climate Education: Perspectives and Approaches from the Literature Universidad del Rosario, Colombia Presenting Author:Climate change refers to a change in the state of the climate that can be identified by changes in the mean and/or variability of its properties and that persists for an extended period, typically decades or longer. Climate change may result from natural internal processes or external forcings, such as solar variations, volcanic eruptions, or persistent anthropogenic changes in the composition of the atmosphere or land use (IPCC, 2014). Climate change is our current reality, and from a scientific perspective, its main cause is understood to be the use, transformation, and market-driven policies related to fossil fuels, which have led to a sustained increase in greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. This situation is further exacerbated by deforestation and land-use change, which reduce ecosystems’ capacity to absorb carbon and disrupt natural water cycles and biodiversity. Current unsustainable production and consumption models, together with intensive agro-industrial systems and a high dependence on non-renewable energy sources, reinforce these pressures on the climate system. In this context, climate change problems of anthropogenic origin are urgent and require transformations across all levels and fields of knowledge. In particular, education, as a strategy for building capacities across generations, should also be mobilized through relevant educational offerings in which environmental issues—and especially those related to climate change—are explicitly addressed, as highlighted by multiple authors (Monroe et al., 2017; Westphal, 2025; Guimerà-Ballesta, 2025). From this perspective, climate education implies significant transformations in traditional teaching and learning processes. It requires moving beyond disciplinary boundaries, promoting active, participatory, and dialogical strategies, while maintaining a strong commitment to scientific rigor. At the same time, climate education should foster affective and emotional attitudes, political awareness, and a holistic worldview that acknowledges the complexity of climate-related phenomena (Lopera-Pérez et al., 2019; Bottin et al., 2023; Herrera-Lopez et al., 2026). In particular, climate education must be adaptive to intersectionalities, especially in the Global South, where women, boys and girls, Afro-descendant and Indigenous communities, and people living in poverty are disproportionately more vulnerable, as evidenced by governmental reports and empirical research (Kwauk & Casey, 2022; Lagi et al., 2023). A systematic literature review in climate education is a potentially creative process that provides relevant information for decision-making. It offers an opportunity to generate knowledge and data-informed theory in an emerging field that is of critical importance for addressing the polycrisis caused by climate change. Accordingly, a literature review process (Fink, 2019) was designed, adapting the PRISMA guidelines (2020). Therefore, this research addresses the following question: What perspectives, approaches, trends, and research findings in climate education focused on women and girls can be identified in the literature? To answer this question, the following research objectives are proposed: (I) to identify the perspectives and approaches related to climate education present in the literature focusing on women and girls; (II) to characterize trends, strategies, and pedagogical approaches in climate education; and (III) to compare research findings in climate education across different population groups, with particular attention to girls and younth women. In this study, the PRISMA framework (2009; 2020) was adapted to ensure transparency, methodological rigor, and replicability throughout the review process. PRISMA is widely recognized as a standard for conducting and reporting systematic reviews across disciplines. This review is grounded in a set of hypotheses that examine climate education from a gender perspective, with particular attention to girls, adolescent girls, and women. These hypotheses address the potential risks climate change poses to girls’ educational processes; differential outcomes of climate education programs for women and girls; gender-based differences in emotional responses to climate change; the role of girls and women as multipliers and catalysts within families and communities; and the relevance of pedagogical strategies that include inspirational activities and differentiated mentoring for female learners. To address these hypotheses, a comprehensive search strategy was developed and applied across multiple databases using a structured search string. Keywords related to climate education, sustainability, and environmental literacy were combined with gender-related terms using Boolean operators (AND, OR). The search focused on titles, abstracts, and keywords and excluded records unrelated to climate change education, such as studies referring to classroom or psychological climate. The review included journal articles, book chapters, reports, and books. The selection of documents for content analysis followed explicit inclusion criteria: studies related to education for sustainable development or climate education; research addressing gender, specifically women and girls; and empirical or instrumental studies with a pedagogical or educational component. Literature reviews, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and bibliometric studies were excluded. Eligible publications were written in English, Spanish, Portuguese, or French, with no temporal restriction, allowing for a broad and inclusive understanding of the field. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The search was initially conducted in Scopus, where 577 documents were identified. An additional 50 documents were retrieved from Ibero-American databases, resulting in a total corpus of 611 sources, including journal articles, book chapters, and official reports. A bibliometric characterization and content analysis are currently underway. The analysis of publication patterns reveals a notable increase in research output since 2015, with most knowledge production concentrated in the United States, Europe, and Australia, while the main funding sources are governmental and non-governmental organizations based in the European Union. The reviewed literature shows that climate education programs have positive impacts on girls and adolescent women when they incorporate participatory approaches, active methodologies, and gender-sensitive pedagogical strategies. Reported outcomes include improvements in climate literacy, critical thinking, self-efficacy, leadership, and community engagement, as well as increased willingness to participate in climate mitigation and adaptation actions. Studies also document gender-based differences in emotional responses to climate change—such as concern, anxiety, empathy, and responsibility—highlighting the relevance of integrating socio-emotional dimensions into climate education. Across the literature, girls and women are portrayed not only as vulnerable groups but also as key agents of change within families, schools, and communities. Pedagogical approaches such as project-based learning, scientific inquiry, education for sustainable development, differentiated mentoring, and the visibility of female role models in STEM+ emerge as particularly effective. Overall, the findings underscore the urgency of advancing climate education policies, curricula, and practices that explicitly integrate a gender perspective to address inequalities and leverage the transformative potential of girls and women.
