Paper Dealing with Epistemic Uncertainty in Classroom Practice. Classroom Cultures in Inquiry-Based Primary School Spelling Instruction Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg, Germany Presenting Author:Uncertainty is not a marginal phenomenon in educational practice, but rather a constitutive component of teaching itself. Educational activity aims to enable learning, but cannot operatively produce acquisition; rather, it is characterised by a structural element of openness and unavailability (Herzmann, 2018). This fundamental pedagogical uncertainty is particularly evident in subject teaching, where subject matter is clearly regulated in normative terms, but the path to a correct decision is not immediately apparent and must be developed through comparison, reference to rules and contextualisation in the course of teaching. This proposal takes up this perspective and focuses empirical teaching research on how epistemic uncertainty is dealt with in the classroom. The teaching of the first language (L1) is considered as an example, specifically in the area of writing and orthography. Language learning objectives are normatively framed in many first languages and associated with high expectations of correctness, while their application remains epistemically demanding. Decisions about correct linguistic forms often cannot be derived directly from perception or intuition, but require knowledge of linguistic structures, principles and rules. The associated uncertainty is not generated by the situation, but is inherent in the subject matter itself. In research-based, discovery-oriented teaching settings, this epistemic uncertainty is exacerbated didactically, as search movements, preliminary interpretations and even inappropriate or ‘abstruse’ explanations must be permitted in principle. At the same time, such open processes conflict with normative expectations of subject-specific accuracy and school order. To date, little is known about how this epistemic uncertainty is actually dealt with in teaching practice. With regard to specific teaching subjects, the theoretical intertwining of subject didactics and praxeological teaching research is particularly relevant here. Primary school L1 teaching is an area in which the interplay between the subject-specific structuring of the learning material and the situational delivery of teaching has not yet been adequately described empirically. While subject-specific didactic theory formation has long been focused on the systematic description of linguistic subjects and their modelling in a way that is appropriate for acquisition, empirical studies on actual teaching practice have remained rare (Riegler & Wiprächtiger-Geppert, 2016). In particular, there is a lack of studies that reconstruct how subject-specific problems are dealt with in teaching, how epistemic uncertainty is framed, limited or kept open in the process, and how this results in different teaching cultures and forms of subject-specific expertise. This proposal addresses this tension and focuses on how epistemic uncertainty is dealt with in teaching by examining L1 teaching as the situational implementation of pedagogical practices. This implementation is understood as an expression of different teaching cultures, each of which produces its own ways of dealing with subject-specific uncertainty. On this basis, the article explores the following questions: Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Theoretically, the article develops teaching culture as an individual working heuristic in order to make the interplay between subject knowledge and interaction in teaching analytically accessible. Teaching is not understood as the implementation of didactic guidelines, but as the social execution of pedagogical practices that stabilise in relation to the class and develop over time (Reh 2015). In this understanding, teaching culture refers to the specific way in which pedagogical practices are related to a learning object (Baltruschat 2018), thereby creating teaching as a culturally influenced space for interaction (Hillebrand 2015). Central to the heuristics developed is the assumption that subject content in teaching is not independent of interaction, but only becomes visible, negotiable and workable through the implementation of pedagogical practices. Accordingly, subject knowledge is not understood as a pre-existing order of knowledge or as a normative goal, but as a practically established, culturally shaped way of dealing with epistemic uncertainty in a subject-specific manner. The heuristics of teaching culture allow these processes to be analysed beyond normative didactic standards and reveal culturally different ways of dealing with identical subject-specific problems. The empirical basis of the study consists of videotaped lessons from third-grade primary school classes. The study examines L1 lessons in which teaching is carried out within the didactic framework of research and discovery. In the first step, based on the video data, the course of the lessons is reconstructed using segment analysis (Herrle & Dinkelaker, 2016) in order to identify phases in which the handling of epistemic uncertainty is particularly evident. Multimodal descriptions are created for selected scenes (Reh et al., 2015; Merklinger, 2022), taking into account verbal, gestural, material and spatial aspects of the lesson. The evaluation is carried out by means of sequential reconstruction (Reh 2015). Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Initial analyses show that epistemic uncertainty is dealt with differently in teaching practice. In one lesson, uncertainty is limited and gradually resolved through a narrow task structure and strong subject-specific guidance. In another lesson, uncertainty is deliberately kept open and used as a starting point for joint search and comparison activities. These different approaches can be described as different teaching cultures in which subject knowledge is established either as precise, step-by-step clarification or as emergent, comparative negotiation. The article does not show that teaching is uncertain, but rather how epistemic uncertainty is dealt with in the classroom. Paper The Complexity of Revoicing in Primary and Secondary Classroom Research: A Scoping Review 1: University of Cambridge, United Kingdom; 2: East China Normal Univerisity, China Presenting Author:Revoicing, as an unique classroom discourse strategy, has attracted lots of attention since it was first identified by O’Connor and Michaels in two elementary classrooms. A revoicing move usually occurs after a teacher poses a question and a student responds. Instead of simply evaluating the response as correct or incorrect, the teacher repeats or rephrases part of student’s utterance to acknowledge student’s contribution, and then opening up the next turn for the student to (tacitly or explicitly) agree or disagree with the teacher’s revoicing. It therefore publicly positions students as a holder of productive ideas and credits this contribution to the originating speaker, thereby creating or sustaining a classroom culture that values students’ thinking. Since its identification, a growing body of international research has demonstrated the pedagogical significance of revoicing, showing that this small talk move can amplify and extend students’ voices, position them as active thinkers, and challenge the traditional IRE triadic interaction pattern. Based on its distinctive functions, some researchers have advocated incorporating revoicing into teacher professional development programs. In particular, the strategy has attracted increasing attention in China since 2024, with emerging attempts to use revoicing to transform the traditional IRE triadic interaction pattern. However, studies conducted across different educational and cultural contexts have also revealed that revoicing does not always produce positive outcomes. In some cases, it may prematurely close down classroom discussion. At other times, instructors may misinterpret or inaccurately revoice students’ intended meanings. Moreover, some variation exists across studies in how revoicing is conceptualized and defined. Against this tension-filled background, and considering the significant role of teacher talk in students’ development across primary and secondary education, we conducted a scoping review focusing on revoicing in these educational stages and K–12 classrooms. To the best of our knowledge, although some review studies have examined teacher talk more broadly, little review research has specifically focused on revoicing as a distinctive teacher talk move. Therefore, this scoping review aims to map the existing research landscape, refine conceptual understandings of revoicing, and provide meaningful insights for both researchers and practitioners. The overarching research question guiding this study is: How have scholars conceptualised and studied “revoicing” in primary and secondary educational research? It can be further divided into three sub-questions. First, how do researchers conceptualize “revoicing” in the existing studies?
Second, how is revoicing examined in the existing literature?
Third, what are the major findings of these studies?
Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study adopted a scoping review to explore the research questions outlined above. The search strategy was developed following the PCC framework (Population, Concept, Context) recommended in the JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis. Considering feasibility, this review included studies on revoicing published in languages accessible to the researchers, namely Chinese and English. The search terms covered three dimensions, as follows: 1. Population: teach* OR student* OR educat* (English); 教师+老师+学生+师生+生生 (Chinese) 2. Concept: revoic*(English); 回音(Chinese) 3. Context: primary OR elementary OR secondary OR “middle school” OR K–12 OR school* OR class* OR mainstream (English);中学+小学+课堂+学校(Chinese) In line with the guidance proposed by Peters et al. (2020), the inclusion and exclusion criteria were developed to identify studies relevant to the aims of this review: 1. The study focused explicitly on revoicing as a discourse practice, or employed revoicing as a theoretical or conceptual framework. 2. The participants were teachers and/or students. 3. The educational level was primary or secondary education. 4. The research context was classroom-based. 5. The study constituted primary research, with no restrictions on methodology. 6. The study was required to address at least two of the research questions posed in this review. The search yielded a total of 397 records. Following the PRISMA-ScR screening process, 84 studies were included in the review. Data extraction and analysis were conducted in two stages. In the first stage, the two researchers developed coding schemes corresponding to each research sub-question. For the first sub-question, data were extracted on (1) theories related to revoicing, teaching, and learning; (2) the conceptual origins of revoicing; (3) the discourse markers of revoicing; and (4) the forms and/or types of revoicing. For the second sub-question, the coding focused on (1) research questions directly related to revoicing and (2) methods employed to investigate revoicing. For the third sub-question, the coding examined (1) the current use of revoicing, (2) the characteristics of revoicing, and (3) the functions of revoicing. In the second stage, according to the nature of the research questions, both descriptive analysis and inductive thematic analysis were employed. The descriptive analysis was conducted to map the general characteristics of the studies and to examine how researchers conceptualized “revoicing” in the existing literature. The thematic analysis was adopted to identify and summarize emerging themes from the data. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings There are three main findings of this study: 1.General Characteristics of Research on Revoicing in Primary and Secondary Education The majority were conducted in Asian and North American contexts, with a primary focus on elementary school classrooms and subjects such as mathematics, science, and technology. Most studies were situated in innovative classroom settings. In terms of research design, most studies tended to analyze entire lessons and employed small video samples. The majority of studies adopted qualitative analysis methods. 2.Three Distinct Research Orientations in Revoicing Research (1) Investigative-oriented approach (2) Intervention-oriented approach (3) Relational-oriented approach. 3.Major Findings Related to Revoicing Discourse (1)Current Use of Revoicing: revoicing targets, types, and frequency of use. (2)Characteristics of Revoicing: strong transferability, context-sensitivity, and markedness. (3)Functions of Revoicing Discourse: most instances of revoicing exhibit positive functions, while some are functionally neutral or negative. This review’s findings highlight some insights for dialogue-intensive pedagogy and related teacher professional development programs, particularly given that many scholars in Europe and the UK are currently focusing on dialogic teaching and have adopted various talk moves as supportive tools in intervention studies. Taking revoicing as an example, this study reveals the complexity of using talk moves as tools to facilitate student learning. On the one hand, the study further demonstrates that teacher talk moves are transferable and have the potential to serve as practical tools that can be offered in teacher professional development programs. On the other hand, it is essential to acknowledge that the same discourse strategy may function differently across classrooms. This study argues that two potential mechanisms may help explain: differentiated learning and the underlying existing sociocultural norms of the classroom. It also discusses the necessity of taking teacher noticing into consideration, particularly how teachers’ attention and interpretation influence their use of talk moves as instructional tools. Paper Didactic Perspectives on Socio-academic Interventions: Teaching, Learning and Participation in Primary and Lower Secondary Education University College Copenhagen, Denmark Presenting Author:In recent years, the need to enhance both students’ academic learning and their social skills in primary education has become increasingly apparent. All too many students face challenges to participating in their learning communities, a circumstance that can negatively impact not only their academic development but also their well-being (Brewer et al., 2017; Saggers et al., 2023). At the same time, schools are expected to prepare students for collaborative work and social engagement as part of future educational and societal demands (OECD, 2018; Weidmann & Deming, 2020). Despite this, little research has systematically mapped how interventions that integrate social and academic elements are designed, implemented and evaluated across subjects in primary and lower secondary school. Reviews have spotlighted academic interventions, but without examining how social factors influence students’ academic outcomes. Mulcahy et al. (2014) highlighted that many interventions have targeted students with emotional and behavioural difficulties, but few have systematically linked social and academic goals. Bowman-Perrott et al. (2016) observed that research often prioritises content-related or cognitive aspects of teaching over the social dimensions of learning. They further point out the lack of methodological rigor in most studies, which frequently overlook social factors that may either support or impede students’ learning. This paper aims to address these knowledge gaps by examining existing types of socio-academic interventions, how they are defined, implemented and evaluated, and how they measure students’ academic and social development. We map current interventions and analyse how they integrate social and academic elements, while also identifying whether and how their interlinkages are conceptualised and empirically examined in the literature. By incorporating a deeper analysis of these interventions’ social elements, we aim to shed further light on how best to support students’ social and academic growth at school. Socio-academic Interventions Schmidt’s (2015) concept of socio-academic learning provides the theoretical foundation for this paper. It builds on social practice theory (Lave & Wenger, 2012), Bourdieu’s notion of social capital (1998) and the concept of socio-mathematical norms (Yackel & Cobb, 1996). Together, these perspectives highlight the mutual and inseparable connection between academic and social participation in learning communities. Socio-academic learning challenges the traditional separation between academic and social inclusion by demonstrating how students’ social positioning and relationships shape their access to learning opportunities. Socio-mathematical norms refer to the implicit and explicit norms that define what counts as meaningful academic contributions in classroom interactions. Socio-academic learning extends this idea beyond mathematics, suggesting that valuing precise subject-specific language or metacognitive reflection establishes participation norms that structure both social and academic dynamics in the classroom. In practice theory, learning is situated within social communities where participation is a dynamic process. Bourdieu’s concept of social capital highlights how relational resources support or constrain academic development. Socio-academic norms illustrate how shared understandings of what constitutes meaningful academic participation can directly impact students’ opportunities to engage in learning. Consequently, instructional design should consider social mechanisms that influence their learning opportunities and recognise that academic progress depends on an inclusive, supportive social structure. In this context, socio-academic interventions refer to instructional approaches that intentionally integrate social and academic goals to promote students’ learning and participation. Such interventions range from collaborative learning activities, where students interact and learn together, to more structured programmes explicitly designed to develop both social competencies and academic skills. By conducting a scoping review of the existing literature, this paper addresses the following overarching research question: How are the social and academic dimensions of socio-academic interventions in mathematics, literacy and science in primary and lower secondary school (ages 5-15) described, operationalised and evaluated, and in what ways do these dimensions influence one another? Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used We initially included all peer reviewed articles reporting empirical findings on socio academic interventions, defined as interventions aiming to enhance students’ academic and social outcomes simultaneously. Additional inclusion criteria were: • The intervention should be aimed at a subject in public school and have both an academic and a social emphasis. • The target group should be public school students aged 5–15 years and comprise entire classes. • The intervention should be aimed at general and inclusive education • The peer-reviewed articles must be written in Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, or English and published between 2014-2024. Studies that targeted segregated special education were excluded. Review articles were also excluded, as they provided neither sufficient insight into the socio-academic aspects of the individual interventions nor adequate insight into the studies’ scientific quality. We conducted our literature searches in March 2024, using the following six databases, including three Nordic databases: ERIC, Education Research Complete, PsycInfo, Oria, SwePub and Research Portal Denmark. Screening and data selection took place from March to June 2024 using the review software Covidence. The initial database search and final collation were conducted in collaboration with an information specialist. Two authors (ST/MS) independently screened 557 references at title‑and‑abstract level. Subsequently, two authors (ST/KH) reviewed 36 full text studies, of which 25 were excluded for the following reasons: no social intervention (n=8), no evaluation (n=1), wrong target group (n=5), wrong setting (n=1), review study (n=2) and not peer reviewed (n=8). Conflicts were resolved through consensus. All three authors jointly operationalised the inclusion criteria and reviewed the full text versions of the 11 studies included in the final analysis. We used a data charting form modified according to the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) guidelines to extract data from the 11 included studies, including reference, intervention name, country, population, sample size, study design, outcome measures, intervention content, subject and results. Given the heterogeneity of study designs, methods and outcome measures, meta analysis was not suitable. Instead, we conducted a thematic synthesis (Thomas & Harden, 2008), involving: 1) line by line coding, 2) development of descriptive themes and 3) generation of analytical themes that extend beyond the primary data to address the research questions. All three authors coded independently and resolved discrepancies through discussion to ensure analytical rigour. This approach enabled us to identify patterns across studies and gain deeper insight into how socio academic interventions target and interlink social and academic competencies. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Out of 557 identified articles, only 11 studies explicitly addressed both academic learning and students’ social participation as intended and evaluated outcomes in whole-class, inclusive educational settings. Across mathematics, literacy and science in primary and lower secondary education (ages 5–15), the interventions shared a common didactic ambition: to organise teaching in ways that position social interaction and participation as constitutive conditions for subject-specific learning rather than as merely parallel or supportive elements. The thematic synthesis identified three recurring didactic patterns. First, social dimensions were primarily operationalised through structured collaboration, dialogic interaction and collective problem solving, thereby shaping participation norms and students’ access to subject-specific practices. Second, academic learning was framed through disciplinary forms of reasoning and language use, while social participation shaped students’ opportunities to take part in subject-specific learning activities. Third, only a minority of studies made the relationship between social participation and academic learning analytically explicit; most treated social interaction as a pedagogical means rather than as a didactic object of inquiry with implications for inclusion and equity. Across studies, positive effects were reported for both academic outcomes and students’ social participation, suggesting that socio-academic interventions can support learning and inclusion simultaneously within general education classrooms. However, the review also reveals a significant didactic blind spot: the lack of conceptual and empirical analyses of how specific instructional designs shape participation, reduce or reproduce barriers to engagement, and contribute to students’ opportunities to learn across subjects. From a didactic perspective, the findings point to a need for more fine-grained analytical frameworks that can capture the interplay between subject content, participation norms and instructional design, including their implications for inclusive teaching. The review thus contributes to European discussions on didactics by identifying both shared features of socio-academic interventions and critical gaps in current research on teaching, learning and participation. Paper Reconceptualizing Homework in Formal Schooling: a Critical Narrative Educational Research Review Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway Presenting Author:Homework is a common element of the teaching and learning process globally, yet studies on homework are inconclusive as to the value that homework contributes to students’ education. A primary concern of research on homework has been to identify associations of homework with students’ academic achievement. Researchers have both found positive correlations and associations of homework and student achievement (e.g. Cooper et al., 2006; Gustafsson, 2013) or concluded that time spent on homework didn’t result in positive achievement gains (e.g. Kitsantas et al., 2011; Trautwein, 2007). Still, with fewer exceptions when homework has been addressed as a teaching tool (e.g. Epstein & Van Voorhis, 2001), most published research on homework is of quantitative nature employing statistical modelling to capture homework effects on students’ academic achievement. To complement these studies, we want to approach the topic by focusing on qualitative research on homework only. The aim of the study is two-fold. Firstly, we want to identify ways in which homework has been studied qualitatively by focusing on educational stakeholders, namely students, teachers, and school directors as primary data participants in formal schooling contexts. This strategic choice enables us to examine homework as a pedagogical practice inherent in teaching and learning practices affected by and affecting those closest to teaching and learning contexts. Secondly, and in turn, this approach is conceived to address homework as a pedagogical tool that can have implications for teachers’ teaching and students’ learning above and beyond what is routinely captured when homework is studied as a variable affecting students' academic achievement as a cognitive outcome. To meet the aims of the study, two main research questions (RQ) are addressed, including:
The first RQ thus is empirically grounded as we examine study results from a bottom-up approach extrapolating from the main findings of the studies included in our review. The second RQ follows a top-down logic where we interpret the main findings considering the main theoretical concepts employed to frame the review, which relies on an educational and pedagogical framing of homework as a pedagogical tool. Lastly, we want to emphasize the formal schooling context in our study as our primary interest is to examine ways in which homework is both conceptualized and practiced in formal schooling. A comprehensive theoretical framework rooted in the general didaktik tradition (Hopmann, 2007; Klafki, 1998, 2000) frames our study. Our initial thesis is that, first, homework, from a didaktik perspective, cannot be thought of outside of the teachers’ work and responsibilities, i.e. outside of teaching. Second, from a didaktik perspective, teaching is primarily shaped by the content in the subject(s) teachers teach, and by extension, homework is also a content-oriented task. Next, we follow Dale’s (1998, 1989) conceptualization of teaching along three core competences rooted in didaktik rationality. According to him, teaching is defined as an organized social system for goal-oriented learning, which involves three competences: “[...] the carrying out of teaching (C1), the construction of teaching programs (C2), and communicating in and constructing of a theory of teaching plans, the act of teaching itself, and the pupils’ process of learning (C3)” (Dale, 1998, p. 256). Dale’s construction of teaching programs is situated at school level, while Klafki’s lesson planning is primarily individualistic with the focus on learners whom the given teacher teaches. Hence, they complement each other and can support our reconceptualization efforts in this study on homework. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used In this critical narrative review, we systematically review qualitative educational studies on homework as a school practice. The critical component has been important to us as “[...] it provides an opportunity to ‘take stock’ and evaluate what is of value from the previous body of work” (Grant & Booth, 2009, p. 93). Our systematic work is characterized by being transparent about the steps we take throughout the research process. To locate peer-reviewed qualitative educational studies of homework in formal schooling, we applied a short search string combined with an extensive list of inclusion and exclusion criteria regarding: concept and content, type of publication / study, timeframe, field of study, language, context, population, and scientific quality. The search was conducted May 26th, 2025, in ERIC, Web of Science, Education Source, and Scopus databases to locate eligible studies in English language, and Oria, Swepub, and Det Kongelige Bibliotek dababases to locate eligible studies in Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish respectively. A total of 5697 studies were retrieved, leaving 3721 after removing duplicates. Screening of abstracts left 78 studies for full text screening, and 22 studies were eligible for detailed review in the final sample. These studies were imported to NVivo software, where we analyzed the included studies by applying a custom-built Coding Protocol adapted from Tahirsylaj et al. (2025). First, we coded attributes applying to the whole text, including name of author(s), year of publication, title, name of journal, country where study was conducted, education level, and subject matter. Secondly, we coded specific sections of the text, namely: main topic(s)/problem(s), main aim(s)/objective(s), main research question(s), details regarding research methods/approach, data, participants, and sampling, main theoretical/conceptual framework(s), main findings and arguments, suggested implications, and directions for further research. The 22 studies represent diverse national contexts, a variety of qualitative methodological approaches, research questions, and aims. To illustrate the nature of a configurative logic of synthesis – as our review methodology relies on - Gough et al. (2017) uses a picture of a mosaic: piecing knowledge together from different contexts. Our coding protocol is open and follows the texts closely, allowing us to integrate the coding with the development of themes (Creswell & Poth, 2018). This process will be thoroughly described once analysis is finalized. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The teacher's perspective is the main perspective in sixteen out of twenty-two texts, and two of these texts also incorporate students' perspectives. Five texts involve students only, while one text depicts the principal perspective. The main data collection tool is individual interviews, but some use focus group interviews, observation, and/or documents/artefacts. Throughout the texts, the main themes that are identified are policy and practice. A striking finding is the ubiquity of homework as a practice across the diverse contexts, despite ambiguous or non-existing policies of homework at national or local level. Only a few studies provide a theoretical or conceptual framework for their study, and the ones that have spanned across diverse theories. It is safe to claim that no coherent or common conceptual framing of homework is present in these studies, and no didactical or educational framing is found. In addition to paying close attention to the empirical findings in the included studies through RQ1, our comprehensive conceptual framework enables us “[…] to see [the] field freshly” (Lather 1999, p. 4) when we discuss possibilities for reconceptualizing homework as a pedagogical tool in teaching and learning practice in formal schooling (RQ2). Most of the studies conceptualize homework as an administrative task, while a few studies provide insights into homework as an educational practice centered around the didactical components: the teacher, the students, and the content. With reference to Dale’s (1998) conceptualization of three core competences for teaching, we see that carrying out homework (C1) is the competence level the studies in the final sample address. The sample provides little information about C2 – the construction of teaching (homework) programs – and none of the studies address how teachers engage in didactical constructions of homework function and purpose (C3).
