Paper Beyond Fragmentation and Essentialism: Family Resemblances as a Metaphor for Didactic Research Örebro University, Sweden Presenting Author:This paper offers a philosophical response to the ongoing debate about how the cohesion of didactic research can be conceptualised in the face of its diversity. As established by previous research, the European field of didactics is characterised by long-standing fragmentation, which has intermittently impeded the exchange of scholarly thought. This diversity stems in part from cultural differences, in part from the plurality of theories and methods used, and in part from the fact that the research field encompasses both general didactics and a multitude of subject-specific counterparts (Gundem, 2011; Hudson & Meyer, 2011; Ligozat & Almqvist, 2018; Werler, 2025). So far, the challenge posed by fragmentation has been met by efforts to articulate a common ground on which all forms of didactic research can rest. This is most evident in the field’s tendency to define didactics in terms of core elements or ideas. As a prevailing metaphor in contemporary research (cf. Sfard, 1998), the ‘core of didactics’ has featured in several key publications and centred on, for instance, the expanded didactic triangle, the didactical questions, or the contingent relationship between educational content and meaning (e.g. Hudson & Meyer, 2011; Hopmann, 2007; Klafki, 2000). While defining the field’s coherence is necessary, we argue that the use of ‘core’ as a prevailing metaphor implies an essentialist notion of didactics that risks limiting the originality of future research and the nature of the conversation among researchers from different scholarly traditions. As such, this paper aims to challenge the metaphor of a didactic core by providing an alternative way of conceptualising the cohesion of didactic research. In other words, we aim to suggest and exemplify a new metaphor by which the field’s commonality can be understood in a non-essentialist manner. The suggested metaphor draws on Ludwig Wittgenstein’s (1953/2009) philosophy of language-games, which emphasises that they are interconnected through a series of family resemblances rather than a single common feature. Crucial to Wittgenstein's definition of language-games is the idea that words do not have inherent meaning but acquire it through the ways in which they are employed for a variety of purposes. The meaning attributed to words is therefore changeable, depending on the usage and human activity at hand. However, this usage is not completely arbitrary, as it is impossible for a person to say or do whatever they wish and still present themselves as intelligible within a given language-game. Instead, these games are guided by patterns, or rules of language, established through previous human interaction, much like the rules for chess, backgammon, and go guide what moves are possible on their respective boards (Wittgenstein, 1953/2009; see also Bowell, 2017). From this position, Wittgenstein (1953/2009) argues that meaning is established as a consequence of how words are functionally used within rule-governed language-games. In addition, he stresses that different language-games are not completely separated from each other, nor are they joined by a single common feature. Rather, Wittgenstein (1953/2009) suggests that their affinities are to be understood as a multitude of interconnected family resemblances, not unlike how eye colour, gait, temperament and so on criss-cross in various ways between members of an extended family. Thus, by using Wittgenstein’s concepts of language-games and family resemblances, this paper offers a conceptualisation of didactic research as consisting of many different discourses that are related to each other through a network of similarities. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Although primarily a theoretical study, we support our argument by analysing research articles published in the Nordic journals Acta Didactica Norden and Nordidactica during 2020-2022. The Nordic context is particularly interesting because, over the past forty years, studies there have been influenced by the Anglo-American curriculum tradition while remaining firmly rooted in European continental perspectives on Bildung (Krogh et al., 2021; Werler, 2025). This means that the Nordic case constitutes a melting pot of different traditions, which is especially suitable for the aim of this paper. Using a purpose-related selection process (Creswell, 2013), 47 research articles were chosen based on the criteria that they were described, in title and abstract, as a) didactic and b) empirical. As such, the selection of articles is substantial but not representative of the field as a whole. After all, our intention is not to offer a systematic literature review, but rather to analyse articles that are rich in information, given our desire to illustrate a theoretical argument. The research articles have been analysed using a method of purpose-related and comparative reading (Säfström & Östman, 1999). This means that each article has been read twice: first, on its own terms through a confirmatory reading, and second, in relation to each other and to the concepts of language-games and family resemblance. Given Wittgenstein’s philosophy, our focus was on finding patterns relating to different usages of ‘didactics’ in the articles’ research questions, theoretical perspectives, methodologies, and conclusions. In short, our analysis aimed to initially delineate the different language-games present in the articles. Following this, we focused on identifying any similarities between these language-games. The fact that we relate the articles to each other, as well as to Wittgenstein’s concepts, means that we employ a retroductive (≈ abductive) line of reasoning. In this process, the researcher allows their theoretical understanding and empirical data to mutually inform each other and produce results (Glynos & Howarth, 2019). Applied to this study, this means that Wittgenstein’s philosophy was used to identify language-games and family resemblances specific to the research field of didactics, while our thesis was continuously refined as new patterns were identified and substantiated through our analysis. In short, our theoretical understanding and the selected research articles exercised mutual influence on each other until our main argument and our illustrative examples formed a logically cohesive narrative. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Through our analysis, we outline some of the language-games and family resemblances present in contemporary didactic research conducted in the Nordic context. In total, three such language-games are outlined: I. Didactics as research on curricular conditions, i.e. research focusing on the institutional circumstances that both facilitate and limit teaching and learning. II. Didactics as research on teachers’ reflective practices, i.e. research focusing on teachers’ actions and considerations relating to educational content and method. III. Didactics as research on meaning-making, i.e. research focusing on the processes and outcomes of student learning. Although the language-games differ in their claims, objects of study, and knowledge interests, our analysis shows that their similarities can be grouped into categories based on theoretical, methodological, and practical affinity. For instance, there is a theoretical affinity across them in the recurring use of social constructivist perspectives. There are also methodological similarities, most notably in the way abductive reasoning is employed as an overarching analytical principle. Finally, studies belonging to different language-games share an ambition not only to produce didactic knowledge for its own sake but also to use it actively to improve educational practice (e.g., by conducting interventions or by developing models, guidelines, and principles for teaching). The identified affinities are therefore used to argue that it is reasonable to conceptualise the cohesion of didactic research not in terms of a single common core but as a network of overlapping family resemblances. In sum, the relevance of this paper is two-fold. First, it presents a new and non-essentialist metaphor for conceptualising the cohesion of the didactic research field. Second, by using examples drawn from the aforementioned Nordic journals, the paper can revitalise the current meta-discussion about didactics within the wider European context of educational research. Paper PACK-UNPACK-REPACK: Transforming the Content-specific Quality of Teaching Through the JAD-MTQ Université de Genève, Switzerland Presenting Author:Formative interviews with teachers are a critical lever for improving teaching quality, alongside observation frameworks and the identification of high-quality teaching features. However, in many observation-based professional development designs, these interviews rely on ancillary tools and/or narrow the discussion to pre-prioritized rubric indicators. This paper examines how the JAD-MTQ model can structure a professional development design aimed at strengthening content coherence across a teaching unit. Using the full set of JAD-MTQ rubrics across diagnosis, formative interviewing, and impact monitoring, we introduce the PACK–UNPACK–REPACK (P-U-R) protocol to structure a formative input. We argue that this protocol supports the formative process by providing a common structure of rubrics that can capture both content-specific aspects of teaching and how these aspects are organized hierarchically across different timescales within a teaching unit. Ultimately, we demonstrate that the JAD-MTQ rubrics (organized into dimensions and criteria) can fulfil various functions at different stages of the formative process. In French-speaking research, the Joint Action framework in Didactics (JAD; Sensevy, 2014; Ligozat et al., 2018) typically investigates what knowledge contents are developed in learning situations and how. Studies carried out with this framework typically investigate how knowledge contents develop in the teacher and students’ classroom interactions. Over the years, the JAD has proved its capacity to describe, understand, and explain classroom practices in various subjects (mathematics, sciences, physical education, French language, etc.; e.g., Amade-Escot & Venturini, 2015; Ligozat et al., 2018; Sensevy, 2011; 2014). The JAD-MTQ (Model for analyzing Teaching Quality based on the Joint Action frameworks in Didactics; Ligozat & Buyck, 2025) structures classroom observation through three dimensions—(1) selection of knowledge content and tasks, (2) structuring of learning situations, and (3) organization of teacher–student interactions—each further specified by criteria. These dimensions address content development across complementary levels of analysis within a teaching unit (Tiberghien & Sensevy, 2012) and are designed to be applicable across school subjects. When used for formative purposes, the JAD-MTQ model contributes to a formative input structured into a three steps protocol; 1) PACK (Seq.A), the teacher-trainer uses the JAD‑MTQ to diagnose strengths and weaknesses across the three dimensions. 2) UNPACK, a feedback meeting is meant to present the diagnosis dimension by dimension to the teacher. 3) REPACK (Seq.B), a planning meeting supports the teacher in redesigning a new unit on the same content by integrating key issues identified. The P-U-R protocol itself contributes to the broader formative process experienced by the teacher (trainee). This formative process is generated by the overall TPD-design. This paper unfolds the conceptual and methodological aspects of the PUR protocol, in which epistemological aspects of the curriculum content and the specificity of the subject matter structure are core concerns during the whole process. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used In this paper, we document and discuss the characteristics of the P-U-R protocol through the case study of a teacher professional development design involving a physical education specialist teacher in Geneva (Switzerland). In this educational context, PE specialist teachers teach the same curriculum content in different primary school classrooms. This facilitates the observation of successive iterations of teaching units about the same content by the same teacher. The starting point of the TPD-design was the observation of a contemporary dance teaching unit (Sequence A) taught by the teacher in a primary school classroom (grade 8, 11-12 y.o.). The improved teaching unit (Sequence B) was implemented shortly after the two formative interviews were conducted. Sequence A and Sequence B full teaching units were video recorded and transcribed. The two formative interviews with the PE teacher, featuring the core P-U-R protocol, were also video-recorded and transcribed. The video data of the interviews were condensed into narratives (Polkinghorne, 1995) reflecting situated aspects of the formative process. Phases of the interviews were segmented following Schreier’s (2012) different scales of unit. The analytical process is qualitative: it combines both the descriptive assessment of sequence A of the JAD-MTQ dimensions and criteria (PACK) and the thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2023) of the formative interviews (UNPACK and REPACK). Through this latter analysis, we address the understanding of what specifies each interview structure, the formative feedback constructed based on the descriptive assessments, and the division of responsibilities between the trainer and the teacher, featuring the situated formative process. Following the implementation of Sequence B, a descriptive analysis of the in-depth differences between Sequence A and B is run as a monitoring step of the impact of the TPD-design. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings First, results from the monitoring step reveal significative improvements in dimensions I (selection of knowledge contents and tasks) and II (structuration of learning situations). However, stagnation is observed in dimension III (organization of teacher and students’ interactions). This pattern is coherent with the theoretical assumptions underlying the JAD-MTQ and its waterfall effect. Second, analyses of the UNPACK and REPACK interviews show some direct effects of the formative input on the improvements monitored. The UNPACK interview pays significant attention to the deployment of D1 and D2 and makes explicit interdependent and hierarchized relations between key aspects of content-specific teaching. In REPACK, more feedback is necessary on criteria from D1 and D2 than from D3. Unfolding the descriptive assessment (UNPACK) raises the teacher’s interest and motivation, yet the very low consensus about the curriculum content of dance remains a major hurdle to build an improved teaching unit. Third, the entire set of rubrics from the JAD-MTQ is used at all successive stages of the formative process (diagnosis, formative interviews, monitoring). Nevertheless, the way it is used by the trainer varies depending on the specific purpose of each step of the formative process within PACK-UNPACK-REPACK. The results open two lines of discussion. First, they raise the challenges of subject specificity and cultural context for conducting interviews and focusing on key aspects to improve the quality of teaching. Second, they speak to the relevance of a hierarchized system of categories for classroom observation instruments. Conducting this study in PE can also contribute to the teaching quality conceptualization for at least 2 reasons: Learning goals are not only cognitive (Charalambous et al., 2025); Specific contextual teaching traditions shape the different curricular content between countries (Forest et al., 2019). Paper Validating a Generic Model of Research Designs in Subject-Matter Didactics by Topic Modelling 1: DIPF Frankfurt am Main, Germany, Germany; 2: University Siegen, Germany; 3: University of Vienna, Austria Presenting Author:Subject-matter didactics is an academic field which is more or less compartmentalized by the subject area of the relevant discipline. Up to now, the discussion about research designs in subject‐matter didactics has mainly taken place within the disciplines of this academic field and the respective national contexts (Bayrhuber et al., 2012; Rothgangel et al., 2020). To stimulate inter-disciplinary and (inter-)national discussion, recently a generic model of research designs has been developed by two cross-disciplinary Delphi Studies. First, a Delphi Study has been administered within the German speaking discourse of subject-matter didactics, in which 305 colleagues from 21 subject-matter didactical disciplines have responded to an online survey with predominantly closed-ended questions and further 68 colleagues answered to a follow-up online survey with predominantly open-ended questions. The result of this study has been used for an international Delphi Study in 30 countries from four continents (Riegel & Rothgangel, 2022, 2024). Both studies resulted in a generic model that is based on three dimensions which are typical for scientific research: theories, subject areas, and methodologies. Its particular subject-didactical character is coined by the categories of these dimensions: These categories give the model the character that is typical of subject-didactic research. This generic model, however, still is deductively derived, while an inductive corroboration of this generic model is still pending. As a first step to take up this desideratum, this project sets out to validate the generic model by comparing it with the latent themes within a sample of doctoral theses within the field of subject-matter didactics. This sample is a perfect test case because in such theses the early career researchers testify that they are competent to do proper research in this academic field. Additionally, the distribution of such a sample regarding theories, subject matter and methodologies may not be as influenced by publication bias as a sample consisting of research papers. The sample’s heterogeneity, volume and length of its single documents prevents traditional approaches for validating the model like qualitative content analysis. Instead, the application of computer-linguistic machine learning approaches is necessary to extract, clean and analyze the texts. The latter was realized with a latent Dirichlet topic modelling approach (LDA), a proven and widely used method to identify latent themes within literature collections (Blei et al., 2003). To ensure parallelism of the generic model and the LDA, instead of a single model, a total of three LDA models were conducted one for each dimension of theories, subject matter and methodologies each based on a set of fixed terms related to each method (i.e. correlation or interview linked to methods; religion, chemistry or language-learning to subject matter etc.). Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The sample of the study has been drawn from the catalogue of the German National Library (DNB) according to the following criteria: a) the text has to be a doctoral thesis, b) the text has to be in the field of subject-matter didactics, c) the text has to be written in German language, d) the text has to be published in Open Access, and e) text was published in or after 2000. N = 1680 texts in the DNB met those criteria. The exported corpus of full texts was analyzed with a mixed-methods approach of natural language processing in R and qualitative approaches: First, the text of each thesis was split into disjunct segments by automatically identifying the sections on theory, methods and results. This was done by determining the section relationship of each single page by counting and analyzing the most frequent single words, pairs and triplets and assigning them to the aforementioned segments. Second, the natural language processing method topic modelling – more specifically a latent Dirichlet approach – was applied on the disjunct segments. LDA is an algorithmic approach to identify the underlying themes of documents in a corpus by identifying words occurring frequently (together) and clustering the documents based on those (co-)occurrences (Blei & Jordan, 2003; Steyvers & Griffiths, 2007). Therefore, the multiple topic models identified in the segments on theory represent the central theoretical paradigms of the theses. Accordingly, the models in the methodical segments refer to the methods used and the models in the segments of findings to the research objectives. Finally, all topics of all topic models were qualitatively analyzed and clustered. This was done by independent ratings of two student raters, the inter-rater-reliability was measured by Cohen’s Kappa (Hallgren, 2012). The clustering will be done within the software of MaxQDA (Kuckartz & Rädiker, 2019). For the cross-validation of both models, two- and three-dimensional heatmaps of all permutations of all dimensions are utilized to visualize the intersections of research objectives, theoretical paradigms and methodological approaches. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This project enables a first glimpse into a comparison of a theoretical model on the one hand and a literature based model on the other hand: a valid model should have a high degree of correspondence with the clusters on the one hand and the categories of the model on the other. If the model is valid, characteristic clouds can be identified in the spaces created by the three dimensions of research objectives, theoretical paradigms and methodological approaches. Validating the generic model of subject-matter didactic research will contribute to the scientific character of subject-matter didactics on the level of the philosophy of science. First, by reflecting own research on the ground of a common model the inter-disciplinary discourse between the single disciplines of subject-matter didactics will flourish – on both the national and the international level. Second, referring to a common generic model of research in subject-matter didactics, the discourse on research designs in this academic discipline has a joint theoretical framework to strengthen comparative research.
