Paper Teaching Processes and Anxiety in Higher Education Teaching: How Are They Related? 1: University of Helsinki. Finland; 2: Häme University of Applied Sciences, Finland; 3: Tampere University, Finland Presenting Author:Teaching in higher education is not only a cognitive and pedagogical process, but also an emotionally demanding activity for teachers. Teaching involves continuous interaction with students, pedagogical decision-making, and responsibility for supporting learning in often complex and uncertain situations. These demands give rise to a range of emotional experiences that are integral to teaching practice. Among these emotions, anxiety is closely linked to stress and represents one of its key negative manifestations (Kyriacou, 2001). Previous research has shown that university teachers experience relatively high levels of stress and anxiety compared to many other professional groups (Kinman et al., 2006). Despite this, anxiety has received limited empirical attention in research on higher education teaching. Some research indicates that teaching strategies, particularly those used in evaluation situations, are associated with higher anxiety among academics (Houlihan et al., 2009). However, there is still a lack of understanding of how teachers’ everyday teaching processes and pedagogical practices are related to anxiety in higher education teaching. Addressing this gap is essential for developing pedagogical practices that support both high-quality teaching and teachers’ emotional well-being. In the present study, pedagogical practices are investigated through the approaches to teaching framework, which conceptualises teaching as a combination of teachers’ intentions and strategies (Trigwell & Prosser, 2004). Within this framework, teaching has traditionally been described in terms of learning-focused and content-focused orientations. Recent research has operationalised these orientations into four distinct but interrelated dimensions of teaching approaches: interactive, transmissive, organised, and unreflective (Parpala & Postareff, 2021; Postareff et al., 2024). The interactive approach emphasises dialogue, discussion, and the active engagement of students in constructing understanding. The transmissive approach focuses on the clear presentation and delivery of content, with the teacher positioned as the primary source of knowledge. The organised approach highlights careful planning, systematic preparation, and structured teaching. In contrast, the unreflective approach reflects limited pedagogical awareness, including difficulties in understanding how students learn and how teaching can support learning (Postareff et al., 2024). However, these four dimensions do not fully capture how teachers actively support students’ deep approach to learning, such as helping students integrate ideas, link new knowledge to prior understanding, and use evidence in reasoning (see Entwistle, 2009; Uiboleht, 2019). To address this gap, the present study introduces a fifth dimension, the Constructive approach to teaching, which captures teachers’ intentional practices aimed at supporting students’ deep learning processes. This dimension aligns with constructivist learning theory and extends earlier operationalisations of learning-focused teaching. Previous research has demonstrated that learning-focused teaching approaches are associated with more positive emotions, higher self-efficacy, and lower levels of burnout and stress among teachers (Chen, 2019; Postareff & Lindblom-Ylänne, 2011; Virtanen & Parpala, 2023). Understanding further how different pedagogical processes relate to anxiety is important, as anxiety may undermine teachers’ concentration, confidence, and long-term well-being. The objective of the present study is therefore to examine how higher education teachers’ teaching is related to teaching-related anxiety. The study addresses the following research question: How are different teaching approaches (interactive, transmissive, organised, unreflective, and constructive) related to teachers’ anxiety in higher education teaching? By linking pedagogical processes with anxiety, the study aims to contribute to a more nuanced understanding of teacher well-being in HE and to inform pedagogical development practices that support both effective teaching and teacher well-being. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The study involved 110 Finnish higher education teachers from universities and universities of applied sciences representing a range of disciplinary fields. Participation was voluntary, and data were collected using a cross-sectional self-report survey administered online. Teachers’ approaches to teaching were measured using the Higher Education Approaches to Teaching (HEAT) instrument (Parpala & Postareff, 2021), which has been validated in HE contexts (Postareff et al., 2024). The instrument includes four established scales: Interactive approach, Transmissive approach, Organised approach, and Unreflective approach. In addition, a Constructive approach to teaching scale was developed for this study to capture teachers’ practices aimed at supporting students’ deep approach to learning, such as encouraging students to integrate ideas, seek evidence, and connect new knowledge with prior understanding. The Constructive scale was adapted from validated instruments measuring students’ deep approach to learning and showed acceptable internal consistency. All HEAT items were rated on a five-point Likert scale ranging from strongly disagree to strongly agree. Teacher anxiety was measured using a modified version of the Sport Anxiety Scale-2 (Smith et al., 2006), adapted to the context of teaching. The instrument included two dimensions of anxiety: Concentration Disruption, referring to difficulties in maintaining focus during teaching, and Worry, reflecting concerns and anxious thoughts related to teaching performance. Responses were given on a Likert-type scale, and scale reliabilities were satisfactory (.76–.80). The data were analysed using Spearman’s rank-order correlation. Building on these preliminary findings, future work will employ structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine the relationships within a more comprehensive analytical framework. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The results showed that teaching approaches were systematically related to higher education teachers’ anxiety. Both the interactive and constructive approaches to teaching were negatively and statistically significantly related to concentration disruption, indicating that teachers who emphasise student interaction, dialogue, and support for students’ deep learning experience fewer challenges in maintaining focus during teaching situations. These findings suggest that learning-focused teaching practices may protect teachers from anxiety-related difficulties in maintaining concentration during teaching. In contrast, the unreflective approach to teaching was positively and statistically significantly related to both concentration disruption and worry. This indicates that limited pedagogical awareness and difficulties in understanding how students learn are associated with higher levels of anxiety in teaching. Difficulties in understanding student learning may increase teachers’ uncertainty, resulting in both concentration problems and worries about teaching. Interestingly, the organised approach to teaching was positively and statistically significantly related to worry, although not to concentration disruption. This association suggests that a strong emphasis on detailed planning and structure may be linked to increased concerns about teaching outcomes and performance. However, it is also possible that teachers who experience more worry adopt a more organized approach in order to feel better prepared and maintain control. Future analyses using structural equation modelling (SEM) will further examine these relationships and provide a more comprehensive understanding of the interplay between teaching approaches and teacher anxiety. Overall, the findings highlight the importance of pedagogical awareness and learning-focused teaching in reducing teaching-related anxiety in higher education. Professional development should support teachers in understanding student learning and adopting interactive and constructive practices, which may enhance both student learning and teachers’ emotional well-being. Paper The Subjective Experience of Students’ Teaching Evaluations by Lecturers in Neoliberal Academia Tel-Hai Academic College Presenting Author:In recent years, anxiety and distress among academic staff regarding Student Evaluations of Teaching (SETs) have become increasingly visible, reflecting the detrimental effects of these evaluations on lecturers’ quality of life and their central role within contemporary regimes of institutional pressure in higher education. Empirical research demonstrates that anonymous student comments significantly increase workplace stress and negatively affect well-being, with early-career academics being particularly vulnerable (Lakeman et al., 2022). At the same time, systematic reviews show that SETs are deeply shaped by sexist, racist, and other prejudicial biases that disproportionately disadvantage women and minoritized instructors (Adams et al., 2021; Deo, 2015; Gatwiri et al., 2021; Heffernan, 2022). Despite this growing body of literature, relatively little research situates these harms within the broader structural transformations associated with neoliberalization in higher education or examines their implications for academic subjectivity. This study addresses this gap by examining how Student Evaluations of Teaching (SETs) function as mechanisms of subject formation within the neoliberal academy. Drawing on the authors’ personal narratives, the study employs academic autoethnography (Ellis, 2004; Adams et al., 2015) to reflect on their experiences as lecturers in an Israeli higher education institution. This approach enables a critical examination of how neoliberal organizational shifts are lived, felt, and internalized, foregrounding the affective and embodied dimensions of evaluation regimes. The analysis is informed by scholarship on neoliberalization processes in higher education, characterized by the expansion of audit culture and measurement regimes that increasingly shape institutional ethos, organizational practices, and lecturers’ everyday working conditions (Boring et al., 2016; Hou et al., 2017; López-Castellano, 2024; Mickey et al., 2022). Within this context, SETs operate not only as tools for assessing teaching quality but also as managerial instruments that regulate conduct, distribute vulnerability, and recalibrate professional worth. Qualitative research has conceptualized SETs as a “game” that lecturers must strategically navigate, embedding them within regimes of surveillance, judgment, and anticipatory self-monitoring (Crimmins et al., 2024). These processes are theorized through the concept of affective subjectivation (Crimmins et al., 2024; Valero et al., 2019), understood as a form of neoliberal governmentality through which academics internalize standards of productivity, performativity, and emotional regulation. Under these conditions, lecturers are compelled to perform the figure of the omnipotent, ever-productive academic subject, often at significant personal and professional cost. The authors’ autoethnographic narratives foreground these costs, illuminating how SETs shape pedagogical practices as well as self-perception, affective life, and intellectual labor. Situated within the Israeli higher education context, the study contributes a qualitative, reflexive perspective to existing debates on evaluation, inequality, and neoliberal governance in academia. By centering lived experience and affective labor, it offers a critical rethinking of SETs as technologies that do more than measure teaching and actively shape what it feels like and what it means to be a “good” academic teacher under neoliberal conditions. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Our autoethnographic approach emerges from a feminist praxis that Sara Ahmed (2017, p. 21) defines as “a sensible reaction to the injustices of the world.” Such a response foregrounds storytelling as a critical practice for contesting power relations and exposing forms of oppression. In applying this perspective to our engagement with one another, we adopt a collective stance that resists the individualistic and individualising logics of an increasingly neoliberal academy. Rather than treating experience as private or isolated, we position it as relational, shared, and politically meaningful. Methodologically, we work through collaborative autoethnography, a form of inquiry that enables us to share, discuss, and analyse memories in dialogue. Autoethnography has been theorised as a mode of autobiographical research that situates personal experience within broader cultural, social, and political contexts. Heewon Chang (2008, 2011) defines it as a research method that draws on researchers’ own life stories as socioculturally embedded data, allowing for an understanding of society through the situated lens of the self. Similarly, Ellis (2004) emphasises that autoethnography centres on a particular self, or aspects of a life, lived in cultural context. Building on this tradition, we employ collaborative autoethnography, defined by Chang et al. (2013) as the joint production of autoethnographic accounts by several researchers situated within a shared sociocultural milieu, in our case, academia. Through the collective gathering, sharing, and interpretation of autobiographical materials, we generate deeper insights into neoliberal academia as a global cultural formation (Chang, 2008, 2011; Blalock & Akehi, 2017). Coming from different disciplines and experiential locations, our narratives articulate multiple perspectives on neoliberal cultural scripts and on the forms of structural and systematic oppression they reproduce. Beyond its analytic value, collaborative autoethnography functions as a practice of community building. It fosters trust, deep listening, creativity, and collegial forms of feedback and mentorship (Lapadat, 2017; Chang et al., 2013). In this sense, and in line with other feminist collective academic projects, we understand our work as a radical act of resistance to competitive and hegemonic academic discourses (Brooks et al., 2017; Charteris et al., 2016; Hernandez et al., 2015). Our exchanges culminated in three dialogic texts, which we subsequently analysed. Through this process, we develop empirical and theoretical insights into the effects of neoliberal sensibilities on academic subjectivities, well-being, and professional practice. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings By exploring the impact of evaluations on well-being and professional relationships, this collaborative autoethnography deepens our understanding of academic life within the neoliberal academy. Engaging with this study through a reflexive methodology allows us to reclaim our agency while resisting processes of neoliberalization within an increasingly metrics-driven environment. Paper Developing as a University Teacher: The Role of Emotions and Reflection Laurea University of Applied Sciences, Finland Presenting Author:This presentation is based on broader doctoral dissertation research (Pekkarinen, 2024) that examined university teachers’ perceptions and experiences of being and developing as university teachers, and the conditions that support this development. Within this research, particular attention was given to the role of emotions and reflection, including social reflection, and their role in developing as a university teacher and in experiencing pedagogical competency. In addition, the research included exploring pedagogical training courses and educational development projects as contexts for supporting teachers’ professional growth. In this paper presentation, I will focus on the findings related to emotions, reflection, and social reflection, and on how these findings can be utilized in teacher development in practice. In the study, emotions are examined through the Control‑Value Theory (CVT) of achievement emotions, which explains how teachers’ appraisals of control and value shape the emotions they experience in their daily teaching work. CVT conceptualizes achievement emotions as emotions related to an activity or its outcomes when evaluated against a standard of success. (Pekrun, Frenzel, Goetz, & Perry, 2007.) Teaching can be understood as a goal‑oriented activity, and teachers may therefore experience different emotions depending on how controllable and meaningful they perceive their teaching to be. In the doctoral dissertation, CVT was used as a starting point for studying individually experienced emotions. However, it was also recognized that emotions can be shared and socially examined, but they were not defined as collective (Salmela, 2012) or group-based emotions (Kessler & Hollbach, 2005; Smith & Mackie, 2016). Reflection is seen as a cognitive, emotional, and social process through which university teachers interpret and evaluate their teaching experiences and their actions as teachers. Reflection helps teachers connect experience with understanding, link theory with practice, and understand emotionally charged situations they encounter in teaching (Schön, 1983; Boud, Keogh & Walker, 1985). In addition to individual reflection, the study emphasizes the importance of social reflection, which is understood as reflection with colleagues and peers. Social reflection involves sharing experiences, discussing interpretations, and constructing meaning together in dialogue, and has been shown to support professional learning, the development of teacher identity, and the interpretation of emotions related to teaching also in previous research (Mezirow, 2000; Roxå & Mårtensson, 2009; Mälkki, 2011). Individual reflection allows teachers to express and examine their own experiences, while social reflection provides opportunities to examine their own experiences against those of others. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The data were collected as part of a doctoral dissertation from a total of 113 university teachers at two Finnish multidisciplinary universities. A mixed methods approach was applied, including both quantitative and qualitative data. Quantitative data included self-evaluation surveys using Likert-type scales (1–5) to assess teachers’ pedagogical competency, the role of social reflection, and emotion-related aspects of teaching. The surveys included two instruments: the PCPD (Pedagogical Competency and Professional Development instrument) and the SRET (Social Reflection and Emotions in Teaching instrument). Qualitative data consisted of reflective writings, open-ended questions, and semi-structured thematic interviews. The reflective writings were collected to allow teachers to articulate their experiences, while the interviews provided in-depth insight into the emotional and reflective dimensions of teaching. The qualitative data were analyzed using theory-guided qualitative content analysis, which combined inductive identification of themes with deductive comparison to theoretical frameworks. The quantitative data were analyzed using statistical methods. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The results show that emotions, reflection, and social reflection play an important role in how university teachers experience their being and developing as teachers. Teachers reported experiencing positive, negative, and mixed emotions related to teaching and being a teacher. Positive emotions (e.g., joy, enthusiasm, and satisfaction) were experienced to strengthen positive experiences of pedagogical competency and of being and developing as a teacher. Negative emotions (e.g., frustration and anxiety) were not perceived as discouraging, however. Instead, teachers experienced them as activating and prompting them to review their practices and identify areas for improvement. Reflection, and especially social reflection, was also experienced as central in developing as a teacher. Through individual reflection, university teachers evaluate their pedagogical experiences and construct their professional identities. Yet, they also noted that reflection does not automatically lead to changes in practice when its purpose or process remains unclear or when opportunities for reflective work are limited. In addition, teachers emphasized that social reflection with colleagues is essential for interpreting emotions, evaluating experiences, and learning from others. Such reflective partnerships may be found not only within one’s immediate teaching community but also beyond it, for example, through multidisciplinary groups in pedagogical training, educational development projects, or personal networks. In conclusion, the results highlight the role of emotions, reflection, and social reflection as essential to teaching and teacher development. Supporting teacher development requires space for concrete reflection practices. For individual teachers, simple tools such as keeping a reflection journal and systematically using student feedback can help make reflection part of everyday teaching. More broadly, teacher development actions should intentionally integrate structured opportunities for social reflection, especially those that enable social reflection through collaboration, meaningful discussion, and networking with colleagues to help teachers interpret emotions, share experiences, and turn reflection into sustained pedagogical growth. Paper Advancing Diversity in Higher Education Teaching: Review-Based Best Practices for Universal Design for Learning Universität Hamburg, Germany Presenting Author:In recent years, the diversity of the student population in higher education settings has increased and is becoming widely recognized. Social surveys indicate that student bodies at German universities are becoming increasingly diverse (Kroher et al., 2023; Middendorf et al., 2017). According to these surveys, approximately 24% of students have disabilities, around 12% have caregiving responsibilities, 17% have a migrant background, and about 15% are international students. This development affects the entire European higher education (HE) landscape, as reflected within the EU educational policy context: Social and societal challenges must be addressed by “ensuring that higher education is inclusive, open to talent from all backgrounds [...]” (EU agenda for HE, 2017). The concept of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) has been identified as a promising approach to addressing the diverse requirements and learning needs of students in HE (Cumming & Rose, 2022; Reardon et al., 2021; Schütt & Peschke, 2024). UDL originates from the universal design movement of the 1970s, which initially focused on accessibility in architecture. The goal was to design buildings and environments that are usable by all people in the long term, without the need for special adaptations for specific groups (Fisseler & Markmann, 2012). These universal principles have since been transferred to education, where they aim to ensure access to learning processes for all students despite individual differences. By reducing barriers to learning, UDL benefits all learners (Fisseler & Markmann, 2012). The overarching aim of UDL is to design teaching and learning environments to be inclusive from the outset, thereby achieving the best possible fit for a diverse student population. At the same time, this proactive approach reduces the need for individual accommodations such as disadvantage compensation (Fornauf & Dangora Erickson, 2020; Peschke & Schütt, 2024). Learner agency plays a central role within this framework. UDL is commonly operationalized through three core principles: (1) designing multiple means of engagement, (2) designing multiple means of representation, and (3) designing multiple means of action and expression (CAST, 2024). In Germany, experience with UDL in higher education remains limited. To date, its application has largely been confined to educational studies and teacher education at selected universities (Bartz et al., 2018; Schütt & Degenhardt, 2020). Against this backdrop, the project “UD[L]ehre: More Universal Design for Learning in Teaching”, funded by the Foundation for Innovation in Higher Education Teaching (Stiftung Innovation in der Hochschullehre), aims to strengthen teaching at the University of Hamburg. The project actively supports lecturers from all disciplines in designing courses based on UDL principles in order to reduce barriers. To this end, information and advisory services are being developed, and financial resources are provided for the implementation of concrete teaching concepts. Through collaboration with various institutional stakeholders and lecturers, the project seeks to establish UDL at the University of Hamburg on a long-term basis. A key foundation for this endeavor is the systematic review and synthesis of theoretical and empirical literature on UDL, which serves to inform and support evidence-based practical implementation. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The data analyzed in this study stem from the project “UD[L]ehre: More Universal Design for Learning in Teaching”. One central objective of the project is to conduct a structured literature review of existing publications on Universal Design for Learning (UDL), following established review methodologies (Earley, 2014; Newman & Gough, 2020). The review aims to provide a systematic, transparent, and thematically organized synthesis of current knowledge on the use and implementation of UDL in higher education. The review was designed to map the state of research on UDL in university teaching and to identify empirically grounded best practice of UDL in higher education. This comprehensive synthesis of existing evidence forms a key foundation for the promotion of new UDL-based teaching concepts at the University of Hamburg. By drawing on insights from prior research and established expertise, the funded teaching projects are enabled to build on proven approaches while simultaneously fostering innovation. The review addresses the following guiding research questions: How is UDL implemented in higher education teaching? Which implementation strategies and practices have proven successful? Publications were selected based on their relevance to higher education, publication date (2015–2026), and language (German and English). In terms of content, the review concentrated on two core areas: (1) best practice examples of UDL implementation, and (2) implementation conditions, including institutional frameworks as well as faculty commitment and attitudes. No disciplinary restrictions were applied, provided the publications addressed higher education contexts. The selection process involved multiple screening rounds and independent reviews of titles and abstracts to enhance reliability. A total of approximately 40 publications met the inclusion criteria and were included in the final review. These publications were analyzed thematically and synthesized to identify central patterns, recurring themes, and key findings. Particular emphasis was placed on systematically extracting and consolidating diverse best practice examples in order to generate transferable insights and concrete starting points for lecturers and institutions interested in adopting UDL. The results of the review have already been used to develop a digital pool of ideas that brings all together and curates best practice examples from a wide range of sources. This resource serves as a practical, evidence-informed tool for university lecturers. In addition to the review findings, new best practice examples and communities of practice in the project “UD[L]ehre: More Universal Design for Learning in Teaching” are scientifically monitored and processed. This results in project-generated findings that further enrich the review. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The literature review indicates that best practice implementations of Universal Design for Learning can be found across a wide range of disciplines; however, there remains a strong imbalance toward the field of educational sciences. Studies show that learning opportunities designed with UDL have a positive impact on learning success and motivation (e.g. the use of subtitles, increased learner agency). The same observations can be made in the field of online and blended learning. It has also been shown that implementing UDL can have a positive effect on university lecturers, e.g. by reducing stress. Furthermore, it confirms that the UDL approach to proactively removing barriers reduces the need for disadvantage compensation. But it is very important to note that the positive effects are not limited to students with disabilities. The review also highlights that successful implementation of UDL is facilitated by specific parameters: consistency over time, incentive structures for faculty members, and systematic dissemination across the institution. Current research gaps include the support structures for educators in the UDL-implementation process. However, it is assumed that long-term qualification support and opportunities for exchange between different disciplines (communities of practice), would be beneficial. The literature also indicates the importance of best practice examples in order to convey to lecturers how UDL can be used and implemented. The Hamburg UDL project builds on the findings from the review. On the one hand, the documentation and preparation of best practices across different disciplines is a key objective. On the other hand, constant support for teachers and the establishment of communities of practice is another pillar of the project. For this reason, the UDL implementations supported are closely monitored, supported in terms of reflection and exchange, and enriched with information.
