Paper Grateful But Lonely: Older Students' Motivations And Challenges In An Online University Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, Spain Presenting Author:The world population is ageing rapidly in a context of longer life expectancy. As a consequence, it is now commonplace to see people aged 60 and over attending university. Older individuals are a small but growing demographic cohort in higher education (Brownie, 2014). Different reasons motivate them to start or continue their academic training, including socialisation, personal fulfilment, mental stimulation, emotional well-being, and continuous learning (Cachioni et al., 2021; Chu & Tsai, 2009). As older students pursue their studies across different educational modalities, including online (Kara et al., 2019), we explore their experiences in a fully online and asynchronous learning environment. Topic overview Older students in higher education are present across all educational settings, including in-person, distance, and online modalities (Schiller, 2023). Regardless of the context, different pedagogical approaches coexist, including those designed exclusively for older students and the traditional ones where students of all ages learn together. In Europe and other world regions, the Universities of the Third Age movement have become a well-known context where older adults pursue their studies. Other traditional universities also offer programmes designed specifically for older students (Formosa, 2014). All these programmes focus primarily on lifelong learning and personal enrichment (Menéndez et al., 2018). However, not all higher education institutions opt for age-specific educational models. Universities based on the open education philosophy, as well as those focused on distance and online learning, typically design their educational offerings universally for all students (Duan, 2025). So, older students who choose to enrol in these educational settings are usually present in the same classrooms and follow the same curriculum as younger students. Online learning offers distinct advantages for older students, including the flexibility to study from home at any time and at their own pace, allowing them to balance their studies with personal circumstances (Gaumer & Noonan, 2010). However, the expectations of these learners regarding online higher education may differ from those of younger students in terms of interests and motivation. Although online learning can favour the inclusion of students across all ages, older students may face distinct challenges related to their personal characteristics, external responsibilities, technical and academic difficulties, and programme-specific requirements (Kara et al., 2019). Older students are not a homogeneous group, either. While those under 65 may still have professional advancement interests, individuals over 65 are often retired and more focused on intellectual enrichment (Schiller, 2023). As a result, these differences in goals suggest that the challenges students face in online learning may vary by age and are worth examining. Analysing older students' needs and expectations represents a key opportunity for online universities to better align their courses to the needs of this heterogeneous population, creating inclusive learning environments that support their lifelong learning goals. The study This research was conducted at the Open University of Catalonia (UOC), an online Spanish university with a fully asynchronous, student-centred educational model that provides students flexibility while offering them spaces for text-based interactivity and collaboration, and personalised feedback. The model’s high degree of flexibility, together with the reduced access requirements, has helped to increase the presence of non-traditional students, such as those over the age of 60. This work aims to explore older students’ perceptions of this educational model in terms of their satisfaction with the learning process and their overall evaluation of online learning based on their particular experience. To address this issue, we pose the following research questions: RQ1 How well does a fully online and asynchronous educational model meet the needs of older students? RQ2 How do older students perceive online learning as a means to accomplish their educational and lifelong learning goals? Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study followed an exploratory, qualitative approach, suited to exploring the experiences and perspectives of under-researched populations (Braun & Clarke, 2021), such as those of older students. Data collection was based on the open-ended question drawn from the annual institutional survey on students’ satisfaction with the university and degree programme. The survey covers various dimensions of the student experience, including institutional support, socialisation, and the learning experience itself regarding teaching, resources, and evaluation. We accessed the institutional repositories and selected the open-ended responses from surveys conducted between 2014 and 2024, focusing on students aged 60 and over, yielding a total of 483 comments (25,9% of all survey responses). These sources are often underused and undervalued in qualitative research (O’Cathain & Thomas, 2004), yet they provide data that is just as valuable and potentially rich as the data collected with interviews or focus groups (Braun & Clarke, 2021). The analysis followed the six-step process of reflexive thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2020), focusing on its experiential dimension. Initially, the first three authors inductively and independently coded a sample of responses. The authors then discussed the resulting codes, assessing the level of agreement on both the chosen codes and their meanings, resolving differences, and standardising code terminology. Subsequently, they applied these agreed-upon criteria to the remainder of the dataset and recoded the previously analysed responses accordingly. We present the two analytical themes that resulted from the analysis, illustrated below with students' quotations and the related categories of codes. Analytical theme 1. I'm not from the generations that master this" Digital competence Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Internal motivation catalyses late-life students' involvement in formal learning. Self-development and personal growth, along with reskilling for those still in the workforce, are the main drivers for pursuing online studies. The flexibility afforded by an online and asynchronous learning model reinforces their intrinsic motivation. These students demonstrate high satisfaction with the university’s educational model, particularly highlighting how constructivist pedagogies and practice-based learning methodologies, together with the development of critical thinking, contribute to achieving their lifelong learning goals. Importantly, older students express gratitude for undertaking their studies at a later stage of life. They perceive this opportunity as a way to break down barriers for older people to access higher education, with some of them characterising it as a privilege. However, this educational model also presents challenges for older students. The lack of on-demand classes and limited opportunities for peer engagement are the primary concerns, often leading to feelings of isolation and disconnection. Many comments emphasised the need to increase both social interaction and teacher presence, particularly the latter through masterclasses or video-based explanations. This need is linked to students' perception that the study content is complex and not fully adapted to their cognitive profiles. Difficulties with digital competency are also an important barrier for older students, especially when navigating the virtual campus and accessing learning resources or discussion spaces. They advocate for curricular accommodations and greater awareness and recognition of their collective needs. Our findings highlight the dual nature of online higher education for non-traditional students. While these environments facilitate access for older students, challenges remain in meeting their distinct needs. Online universities should leverage the inherent flexibility of their educational model to strengthen the inclusion of all students by providing robust scaffolding and designing courses that promote social interaction and teacher presence. Paper Broadly Accessible, Locally Important: (Re)Conceptualising Hybrid Education in Regional Higher Education Institutions University of Jyväskylä, Finland Presenting Author:Higher education institutions (HEIs) are increasingly expected to diversify their campus-based teaching formats through hybrid and fully online offerings (EUA, 2021). Such diversification is viewed as essential for addressing growing educational inequalities and responding to urgent societal challenges such as rural depopulation and lack of skilled labour. These policy imperatives are now shaping national and local educational landscapes also in the Nordic, compelling HEIs to reinterpret and operationalise education within their specific linguistic, cultural, and geographical contexts. Hybrid educational arrangements—integrating physical and digital, onsite and online learning—hold great potential in this regard (Pöysä-Tarhonen, 2025, 2026). This conceptual paper examines hybrid education in regional HEIs, specifically in the Nordic context. While Nordic higher education is widely recognised for its strong commitment to equity, accessibility, and social inclusion (e.g. Buchholtz et al., 2020), HEIs in regional centres and smaller towns often operate under distinct conditions compared to their counterparts in major urban centres. These HEIs are typically characterised by smaller scale, more dispersed student populations, and a greater integration with local communities. As such, they carry a dual mandate: to promote equitable access to tertiary education across geographically diverse populations, and simultaneously, to contribute to local and regional vitality (Nordregio, 2024). In this context, hybridity is framed not only as a pedagogical question but also as a critical dimension of making higher education economically viable in sparsely populated areas. However, while these institutions are tasked with balancing widening participation and local and regional development, their distinct conditions are still underrepresented in dominant policy narratives and educational research. Accordingly, the central research question guiding this paper is: How can hybrid education be (re)conceptualised as a spatially responsive educational practice in regional HEIs? Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used To address the research question, the paper draws on three intersecting theoretical perspectives. First, adopting a postdigital lens (e.g. Ryberg, 2025), the paper challenges simplistic binaries between ‘the physical’ and ‘the digital’, viewing them instead as co-constitutive dimensions of hybrid educational spaces (Gourlay, 2021). In practice, both online and onsite learners navigate entangled spaces of physical and digital that shape their learning and belonging (Lamb & Carvalho, 2024). Within this view, students are not passive recipients but active curators of their learning spaces, assembling spatial, temporal, and technological resources in ways that reflect their responsibilities and lived realities (Lamb & Carvalho, 2024). These curatorial practices, however, are deeply shaped by (uneven) access to infrastructure, varying levels of digital fluency and life conditions of students (Mineshima-Lowe et al., 2023). Second, the paper draws from geographies of education (e.g., Fløisdorf & Adriansen, 2022; Kraftl et al., 2025) to better understand how space, place, and institutional practices intersect in shaping hybrid learning, especially in HEIs outside urban areas. In hybrid education offered by regional HEIs, where campus-based communities can be fragmented and part-time or commuting students are common (e.g., Hill et al., 2024), sustaining interaction and connection among students and between students and educators can prove challenging. This raises questions e.g. how to foster relational depth across dispersed spatial and temporal arrangements and requires rethinking of hybrid forms of university participation anew, extending from binary thinking of student mobilities (e.g., ‘staying local’ and ‘going away’, Finn, 2017) to recognising multiple narratives of human and spatial relationships (e.g., Gravett & Ajjawi, 2021). Third, insights from the sociology of education and critical policy studies are used to interrogate the possible tensions between institutional visions of digital transformation and the everyday realities of hybrid teaching and learning in regional HEIs (e.g., Gourlay, 2025). Yet such framings often obscure the lived realities of educational practice, where structural constraints and everyday challenges are pronounced (Rüsselbæk Hansen & Phelan, 2023). For instance, institutional expectations surrounding hybrid educational models may conflict with operational realities, including limited staff resources, and a lack of continuity between online and on-campus components if students navigate multiple locations, platforms, and temporal rhythms. Throughout, the different theoretical perspectives are not examined in isolation but rather analysed as interdependent. Together, they offer a more nuanced lens through which to understand the lived practices and structural dynamics shaping hybrid education in Nordic regional HEIs and beyond. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This paper advances a conceptual reframing of hybrid learning in regional HEIs by positioning hybridity as a spatial, relational, and institutional phenomenon. The central contribution lies in developing a theoretical lens that illuminates how hybrid learning is co-constructed through the interplay of everyday practices, material conditions, and policy narratives. Rather than viewing hybrid education solely as a mode of delivery or technological advancement, the paper argues for a broader understanding that acknowledges how hybrid learning spaces are co-constructed through everyday practices, material conditions, and institutional policy visions. In doing so, the paper invites researchers, educators and policymakers to move beyond abstract design principles to better account for the complexity of hybrid educational arrangements in regional HEIs. These include, for instance, the spatial and technological constraints shaping learner agency, the relational and affective dimensions of participation, and the alignment—or misalignment—between policy-level imaginaries of digital transformations of HEIs and institutional or regional capacities and their everyday educational practices. Paper Inclusion in Higher Education Through Design of Alternative Student Pathways DPU, Aarhus Universitet, Denmark Presenting Author:Background: Higher educational institutions are organized in monocultures with a standard student in mind (Costa-Renders, 2019). The organization of teaching, learning and administrative practices presupposes a narrow set of ways to participate as a student from enrolment to graduation: A standard student pathway. Many students are able to comply with the standard student pathway. Simultaneously, a large minority – often with impairments - experience problems with the standard student pathway. To compensate, the educational institutions offer educational support [Specialpædagogisk Støtte]. Educational support is for students with recognized impairments only. Designated educational support does help but can be experienced as stigmatizing (Fornauf & Erickson, 2020). The mismatch with the standard student pathway also produces an extra workload for the atypical students to acquaint themselves with complex rules for dispensations (Stigemoe et al., 2021). Thus, the challenges experienced by atypical students arise in the meetings between the student and the educational institution, rather than from the impairment in itself. The higher drop-out rate among students with impairments (Amilon et al., 2020) suggests that the current support system is insufficient. There is a need to rethink the educational support system along the line of Universal Design for Education (UDL): To design educational systems with the diversity of students in mind (Meyer & Rose, 2000). How can we challenge the monoculture? What if multiple student pathways existed through the educational system? Aim: The aim of the study is to design alternative student pathways that can address one or more recurring interface problems arising between students with disabilities/health conditions and the learning activities and organization at the university. Method: The research question is investigated through an Educational Design Research methodology (McKenney & Reeves, 2019). The central concept of student pathways stems from care pathways in the health sector. Care pathways are professional tools that orchestrate treatment goals, treatment practices, work divisions and sequencing of different parts of the treatment. The aim of care pathways is to enhance the quality of care across professionals, improve patient outcomes and satisfaction and optimize use of resources (Vanhaecht et al (2007) in Schrijvers et al., 2012, Hunter & Segrott, 2008). The aim of student pathways is likewise to align the goal of inclusion with a broad set of activities, practices and professionals. The pathway concept stresses the need to develop sets of coordinated practices among faculty, students and administrators that are experienced as continuous and supportive of learning by as many students as possible. Through a three-phase research process, (1) the interface problems are investigated, (2) a pilot alternative student pathways developed and (3) the prototype tested. The designed alternative student pathway stands in as a concrete utopia that both seeks to reconfigure existing university practices and point to gaps in the current support practices. Results: Phase one revealed five recurring interface problems produced in the intersection between individual differences in student participation and organization of learning activities at the university; (1) Problems keeping up with the institutionalized study pace, (2) difficulties meeting university expectations about self-organized learning, (3) problems maintaining a positive or neutral emotional stance in learning activities, (4) problems accessing academic content, and (5) problems fulfilling expectations to group work participation. Phase two further deepened the multi-perspective understanding of the chosen focus of interface problem 2. A pilot student pathway was developed focusing on better transfer of knowledge between stakeholders and better continuity and connection between inclusive measures organized as part of the general setting and inclusive measures in the specialized support system. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The research question is investigated through an Educational Design Research methodology (McKenney & Reeves, 2019). The first phase consisted of an interview study looking deeper into the kind of challenges students experience across various diagnoses and conditions. Twenty-one students with a mixture of indi-vidual conditions participated in individual semi-structured interviews. Students were recruited among Aarhus University students with the following inclusion criteria (1) long-term emotional problems that af-fected their life as students, (2) Long-term somatic conditions that affected their life as students, and/or (3) neurodivergent conditions that affected their life as students. Documentation of diagnoses/health con-ditions was not requested. Thematic analysis of the interviews revealed five recurring interface problems, one of which was chosen for the second phase: difficulties meeting university expectations about self-organized learning. Phase two consisted of a series of four workshops with multiple university stakeholders as participants: The researchers (doubling as educators), a student administrator, a student counsellor, a teaching consult-ant, employees/researchers from the Centre for Educational Development, employees from the Student Support Office. A voluntary student board provided the student perspective. The content of the workshops was structured discussions about: (1 ) Elaborating interface problem 2 from all perspectives, (2) agreeing on a shared definition of the interface problem, (3) generating ideas for what would be needed in an alter-native student pathway for the chosen interface problem and (4) calibrating the shared model. Discussions are workshops were recorded, transcribed and summed up in working papers in between workshops and commented on by the student board. Phase three test of the prototype is planned to take place in the fall 2026. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The rising number of students with the student diversity experienced by faculty and university administra-tors emerges from interface problems and the strategies students use to handle their experienced interface problems rather than the diagnosis or health condition in itself. Knowledge about the source of diversity can be a productive starting point for development of more inclusive learning environments. Rather than focusing on specific learning needs arising from a range of different specific diagnoses and health condi-tions, educational development initiatives can focus on the smaller amount of shared interface problems. Five recurrent examples were found of how student diversity is produced in the intersection between indi-vidual differences in student participation and organization of learning activities at the university; (1) Prob-lems keeping up with the institutionalized study pace, (2) difficulties meeting university expectations about self-organized learning, (3) problems maintaining a positive or neutral emotional stance in learning activi-ties, (4) problems accessing academic content, and (5) problems fulfilling expectations to group work par-ticipation. Solutions to interface problems are complex and hinges on opportunities for developing a shared focus in the broader inclusive agenda and a model for how to orchestrate collaborations and knowledge transfer be-tween stakeholders. The design of an alternative student pathway stands in as a concrete utopia that both seeks to reconfigure existing university practices and point to gaps in the current support practices. These barriers are particularly salient in compulsory academic subjects such as English as a second language (L2) (Černickaja & Sokolová, 2024), which functions as a gatekeeper to academic progression, international mobility, and participation in the European Higher Education Area. When teaching practices prioritise rapid processing, accurate decoding, sustained attention, implicit interaction norms, and high-stakes oral performance, students with ADHD, dyslexia, and related conditions may experience persistent difficulties in executive functioning, literacy, and socio-pragmatic skills (McDowall & Kiseleva, 2024). European HE systems have predominantly addressed inclusion through reasonable accommodations and individual support measures. While necessary, such approaches are often reactive, rely on student disclosure, and do not sufficiently transform everyday pedagogical practices (McDowall & Kiseleva, 2024). As a result, responsibility for inclusion frequently remains with individual students rather than with learning environments. Although prior research has criticised reactive accommodation models and called for more proactive systemic support (Korthals Altes et al., 2024), empirical evidence on effective inclusive instructional practices remains limited (Taff & Clifton, 2022). This gap is particularly pronounced for SWD studying English as a second language (L2), which functions as the lingua franca of academia (Hakala et al., 2025). Moreover, few studies have examined SWD study engagement through Self-Determination Theory (SDT)–informed interventions or mixed-methods designs (Wang et al., 2024). Addressing these gaps, this paper brings together findings from two complementary empirical studies examining how SDT can inform inclusive pedagogy that proactively enhances SWD study engagement and inclusion in HE. The studies investigate an SDT-informed English L2 course implemented at a Finnish research-intensive university. The course was explicitly designed to support students’ basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness, drawing on SDT-based teacher motivational behaviours (Ahmadi et al., 2023). The overarching research aim is to generate theoretically grounded and empirically validated knowledge on how inclusive learning environments can be enacted through pedagogical design rather than accommodation alone. The following research questions guide the studies:
The theoretical framework integrates Self-Determination Theory (SDT)-based teacher motivational behaviors (Ahmadi et al., 2023) and contemporary study engagement theory (Trolian, 2024), which conceptualises engagement as a multidimensional construct encompassing behavioural, cognitive, and emotional components. In addition, the studies are informed by the relational model of disability, aligning with European inclusive education frameworks by emphasising the interaction between learners and learning environments rather than individual deficit (Taneja-Johansson & Pesonen, 2025). The European and international relevance of this research lies in the universality of SDT, the shared challenges surrounding inclusive HE across European systems, and the central role of English L2 learning in academic participation. By focusing on pedagogical practices that can be implemented across disciplines and national contexts, this research contributes directly to advancing educational research that informs inclusive policy and practice across Europe and beyond. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This paper synthesizes findings from two empirical studies conducted within the same pedagogical intervention, using complementary qualitative and mixed-methods research designs. The research context was a 12-week, bachelor-level, pass/fail English L2 course delivered in line with the SDT-based teacher motivational behaviours (Ahmadi et al., 2023). The course was taught in small groups (maximum of 10 students) at a Finnish research-intensive university and targeted students who self-identified as having experienced challenges in learning English, including dyslexia, ADHD, anxiety-related conditions, and other learning difficulties. Ethical standards consistent with Finnish research integrity guidelines were followed throughout, and, in accordance with the Finnish National Board on Research Integrity (2023), no formal ethical review was required. Informed consent procedures were implemented in line with established ethical research practices (Creswell & Creswell, 2023). Study 1: Qualitative interview study The first study employed a qualitative case study design (Creswell & Creswell, 2023). Data were collected in 2020 through semi-structured interviews with nine students following course completion. The interviews explored students’ engaging learning experiences and the perceived role of autonomy, competence, and relatedness in facilitating engagement. Data were analysed using abductive qualitative content analysis, combining inductive identification of learning modes (e.g. dialogue, participation, reflection, doing) with deductive coding informed by SDT (Ryan & Deci, 2020) and study engagement theory (Trolian, 2024). Study 2: Longitudinal mixed-methods intervention study The second study adopted a qualitatively oriented mixed-methods (QOMM) case study design, including 31 SWD. Quantitative data were collected in 2021-2024 using a validated study skills and well-being questionnaire (Parpala & Lindblom-Ylänne, 2012), administered at the beginning (T1) and end (T2) of the course. Five scales were analysed—self-efficacy, interest, alignment, support, and feedback—using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. All scales demonstrated acceptable reliability. Qualitative data consisted of weekly learning journals collected over ten weeks. The journals captured task-proximal reflections on concrete learning events. Abductive qualitative content analysis was used to identify learning contexts, engagement types (Trolian, 2024), and SDT facilitation (Ahmadi et al., 2023). Quantitative and qualitative findings were integrated using the Pillar Integration Process (Johnson et al., 2019), enabling systematic comparison across data strands. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Across both studies, the results indicated that a coherent set of SDT-based teacher motivational behaviors (Ahmadi et al., 2023) supporting students’ sense of competence, autonomy, and relatedness and embedded within both course design and instructional practice, contributed to their active engagement. Engagement was most strongly facilitated by competence-supportive practices in class–teacher and student–teacher interactions through clear structure, scaffolding, authentic tasks, and timely personalised feedback. These practices were particularly effective in fostering cognitive engagement, including strategy use, self-regulation, and sustained intellectual effort, while reducing academic insecurity. Relatedness-supportive practices, especially small peer groups and empathic teacher–student dialogue, played a central role in enhancing emotional engagement, sense of belonging, and psychological safety—factors critical for SWD who often report anxiety and social exclusion in traditional English L2 learning environments (Černickaja & Sokolová, 2024). By transforming social interaction from a source of anxiety into a driver for emotional engagement and participation, such practices strengthened inclusion within the academic community. Autonomy-supportive practices, including meaningful choice and self-referenced goal setting, supported behavioural engagement and persistence. Building on these findings, this paper challenges the overreliance on diagnosis- driven, reactive accommodations as the primary inclusion strategy for SWD in HE by demonstrating how proactively inclusive course design and instructional practices can effectively support SWD study engagement and inclusion (Taneja-Johansson & Pesonen, 2025). While the small sample sizes and purposive sampling may affect the generalisability of the findings, the thick description afforded by the interviews and task-proximal learning journal reflections supports analytic transferability (Corrigan & Onwuegbuzie, 2020). To strengthen the evidence base and causal inference, future research should employ diverse RCTs with systematic fidelity measures. Taken together, these findings offer actionable insights for teacher education, curriculum development, and institutional policy, illustrating how inclusive teaching practices grounded in SDT can benefit diverse learners across European HE contexts.
