Paper Interviewing the Silent Co-producer: A Phenomenological Analysis of Researcher-Zotero Entanglements in Post-digital Knowledge Production University College London, United Kingdom Presenting Author:Within university research training across European contexts, information and digital literacy curricula often emphasise fostering a “mastery” of bibliographic and database management tools. Designed to underpin students’ “digital competence”—a core lifelong learning requirement identified by the European Commission (2006; 2013)—this skill-based approach explicitly frames digital technologies as inert instruments to be used and controlled. Yet, in the “post-digital” era, where the digital is entangled with the assumed “humanity” of education (Jandrić et al., 2018), the complexity of digitally-saturated research must not be underestimated. Simple tasks needed for writing an essay require individuals to co-author the work with their laptops and merge themselves into digital gatherings; the unacknowledged power of algorithms, as Beer argues (2012), may draw agency away from human researchers and appropriate it as their own. As human consciousness is now enmeshed within its sociotechnological environment (Hayles, 2006), knowledge production no longer proceeds from an objective position of externality. It is thus both timely and significant to unravel how everyday human-technology relations are negotiated within academic knowledge production. This paper, grounded in a posthumanist recognition of digital agency, aims to explore how digital technologies condition today’s research practices. Specifically, Zotero, one of the most used referencing management software, is examined as a knowledge co-producer. The study addresses a primary research question: In what ways does Zotero entangle with human researchers, and how does this shape the conditions under which academic knowledge is produced? To render the otherwise hidden agency of Zotero visible, this research employs a phenomenological design based on Adams and Thompson’s (2016) approach for “interviewing” digital objects. Three of their heuristics, including “gathering anecdotes,” “following the actors,” and “listening to the invitational qualities,” were deployed to observe and textually disclose the detailed network enacted between the researcher and Zotero. Listening to the “whisperings” of Zotero, the paper disentangles a “loose” Researcher-Zotero network where social and material factors are constantly at play to redefine one another. These factors include the researcher’s prior knowledge and work environment on the one hand, and the specificities of Zotero’s offerings, on the other. Findings indicate that material features, such as “auto-save,” nudge the researcher toward an algorithmic logic of efficiency; yet, its failure to capture certain sources fosters digital exclusion that systematises knowledge hierarchy predicated on Zotero’s automated readability. Meanwhile, this process is not untethered from human agency. Throughout the interview, the researcher’s internalised criteria for “legitimate” scholarship functioned as an epistemic filter, whereby the manual deletion or editing of auto-saved entries served to reclaim agency from Zotero’s auto-collection logic. These factors consequently form a material-semiotic relation that extends beyond mere citation management to exert value-laden impacts on the process of knowledge production. Arguably, Zotero is far from a neutral tool; it is a co-participant in the research process, who actively shapes the parameters of scholarship through its inherent architecture. Such findings suggest that the conditions under which academic knowledge is produced are being reshaped by invisible digital infrastructures whose logics are rarely scrutinised. Understanding academic knowledge production today therefore requires attention not only to the positionality of human researchers, but also to the constantly extending and diminishing networks researchers share with their digital technologies. For research training programs in universities across European contexts, the findings necessitate a move beyond technical proficiency toward a critical engagement with the digital materiality of academic labour. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Philosophical stance This study, guided by a posthumanist stance, views knowledge as co-produced through the entanglements of human and non-human actors within their surrounding environments. Consequently, the epistemology of this research is grounded in subject experiences, one that seeks to capture the authentic, lived moments of being (Brinkmann and Friesen, 2018). Research design Zotero was selected as the research object due to its status as a ubiquitous “black box” within the scholarly ecosystem. Adams and Thompson’s (2016) heuristics—drawing on Actor-Network Theory (ANT) and phenomenology, both of which are “posthumanism-friendly”—present a feasible approach to speaking with Zotero. While ANT disrupts binaries through networked relations, phenomenology transcends the subject-object dichotomy by articulating the inherent intimacy of the person-world encounter. Specifically, the study followed the first three heuristics for interrogating technologies proposed by Adams and Thompson (2016). The investigation began with “gathering anecdotes,” textually disclosing how Zotero manifests in everyday events. Recognising that technologies require specific approaches to reveal their involvement, the researcher then employed the second heuristic, “following the actors,” stepping back from human-centric narratives to observe how all participants—human and non-human—interact. This stage revealed the tensions residing in the “hyphenated spaces” joining Zotero and the researcher. Since digital objects speak silently, the final heuristic, “listening for invitational qualities,” was used to identify what Zotero “invites” or “discourages.” This listening occurred in relation, through which Zotero addressed the individual within the situated context of their own horizons of meaning. Data analysis To disentangle the interview transcripts, the study applied three analytic heuristics proposed by Adams and Thompson (2016). First, the process involved “discerning the spectrum of human-technology-world relations.” Drawing on Ihde’s (1990) postphenomenology, this heuristic helped analyse Zotero’s role as a mediator that “affects” and “infects” individuals’ perceptual relations with the built-in assumptions of scholarship. By focusing on these relations, the research identified how Zotero moves beyond a mere tool to become a lens through which the researcher views their own bibliographic world. Second, the study focused on “unravelling translations” (Latour, 2005; Callon, 1986). This approach interpreted the ongoing negotiations and "translations" that both unify and disrupt the Researcher-Zotero network, revealing how agency is distributed and shifted between actors. Finally, informed by Ingold’s (2012) work, the third heuristic “tracing responses and passages” analysed how Zotero and the researcher co-respond, improvising passages through the academic environment rather than simply following a linear, pre-determined track. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings By “interviewing” Zotero as an active participant in research practice, this paper set out to make visible the often-overlooked role of digital infrastructures in shaping academic knowledge production. The findings reveal a “loose” Researcher–Zotero network in which agency is neither just human nor purely algorithmic, but distributed. Zotero’s seemingly mundane functionalities, such as auto-save, subtly reorganise research activities and orient the researcher toward particular rhythms that prioritise accumulation and efficiency. By playing a further role in determining what becomes citable, Zotero actively constructs how knowledge is assembled and stabilised. Automation emerge not as neutral conveniences, but as epistemic forces that condition the very conduct of research. Academic production thus unfolds within Researcher–Zotero entanglements, where values are negotiated through the hyphenated networks that bridge the researcher and their digital environment. Attending to the hidden agency of everyday technologies like Zotero, the study contributes to an understanding of how contemporary scholarship is digitally organised and thereby governed. To continue treating bibliographic tools as inert instruments to be “mastered” risks masking the ways invisible digital infrastructures silently occupy the research landscape. In this respect, the findings suggest that the “digital competence” championed by the European Commission (2006) must be reimagined to encompass an awareness of digital materiality. This paper therefore argues for a move beyond the less-than-nuanced, mastery narratives that currently dominate university research training. There is a need for doctoral programs across Europe to create pedagogical spaces where individuals are encouraged to unravel the assumptions, values, and logics embedded in their tools, recognising them not as passive instruments but as active collaborators in the craft of scholarship. Paper Capturing Learning in Context: Demonstrating Video for Pedagogical Interaction and Time-Lapse Video for Spatio-Temporal Patterns of Use in Learning Environment Research 1: University of Melbourne; 2: University of Lapland, Finland Presenting Author:Educational spaces are increasingly expected to support diverse pedagogical practices, flexible use, wellbeing, and inclusion as schools respond to evolving educational goals and pedagogical priorities. While research on learning environment design has expanded considerably, persistent methodological challenges remain in capturing how educational spaces are actually used in everyday practice. Conventional observation methods often privilege momentary interaction and instructional intent, providing limited insight into broader spatial rhythms, transitions, and patterns of use that shape learning across time. This paper addresses these challenges by demonstrating how different video-based methods are purposefully selected to investigate distinct educational phenomena. Drawing on two empirical case studies from Australia and Finland, the paper illustrates how video serves as a goal-oriented data-collection method in learning environment research. Rather than treating video as a neutral or interchangeable research tool, the studies explicitly align methodological choices with specific research aims and the types of educational activity under investigation. In the Australian secondary school case, real-time video observations were employed in pre- and post-lesson cycles within newly designed prototype learning environments. The research focus was on pedagogical practices, teacher–student interaction, and instructional decision-making. Video was selected because it enables fine-grained analysis of classroom interaction and teaching strategies as they unfold in situ. Video analysis supported examination of didactic and facilitative teaching approaches and served as a reflective resource for teacher professional learning, enabling educators to connect pedagogical intentions with observed classroom practice. In contrast, the Finnish primary school case utilised time-lapse video as part of a post-occupancy evaluation of shared learning spaces. The research focused not on interactional detail but on understanding how space was used throughout the school day. By compressing extended periods of activity into analysable sequences, time-lapse video revealed recurring spatio-temporal patterns of use, including circulation, activity clustering, transitions between learning modes, and structural constraints linked to spatial layout and scheduling. These patterns were not readily visible through real-time observation, surveys, or interviews. By placing these two cases side by side, the paper demonstrates that video and time-lapse video differ not only in temporal resolution but also in the kinds of educational knowledge they produce. Real-time video foregrounds micro-level pedagogical interaction and instructional intent, while time-lapse video makes visible macro-level spatio-temporal patterns that structure everyday educational practice. The paper argues that methodological choices fundamentally shape what can be observed, analysed, and known about educational space. This paper provides a methodological reference point for studies on learning environment design, affordances, teacher roles, and spatial typologies. It contributes to Network 06 by demonstrating how purpose-driven, temporally sensitive video methods can strengthen evidence-informed research, evaluation, and redesign of educational spaces in response to the evolving goals, practices, and spatial demands of contemporary schooling. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Methods The study uses a comparative research design, selecting different video-based methods based on the research aims. Two empirical case studies were conducted in Australia and Finland, each focusing on different aspects of educational activity and the use of learning spaces. Research design The research design is intentionally non-triangulative: video and time-lapse video are not used to examine the same phenomena from different angles, but to investigate different aspects of educational space. The design emphasises alignment between research questions, temporal scale, and methodological choice. Australian case: real-time video In the Australian secondary school case, real-time video observations were conducted in newly designed innovative learning environments. Data collection followed pre- and post-lesson observation cycles, with video recordings focusing on classroom interaction, teaching strategies, and the use of space during instruction. Video data were analysed using iterative viewing and coding procedures to identify pedagogical practices, interaction patterns, and instructional decision-making. In addition to research analysis, video recordings were used in reflective sessions with teachers to support professional learning and pedagogical development. Finnish case: time-lapse video In the Finnish primary school case, time-lapse video was employed as part of a post-occupancy evaluation of shared learning spaces. Cameras captured extended periods of everyday school activity, which were compressed into time-lapse sequences for analysis. This approach enabled identification of spatio-temporal patterns of use, including movement flows, activity clustering, transitions between learning modes, and the impact of spatial features such as storage, circulation routes, and visibility. Analysis focused on recurring spatio-temporal patterns rather than individual behaviour. Ethical and analytical considerations Ethical approval was obtained in both national contexts. Informed consent procedures, anonymisation of participants and settings, and secure data management practices were applied throughout the study. Particular attention was given to ethical considerations associated with visual data, including minimising observer effects, avoiding the identification of individuals, and managing large volumes of video material responsibly. Analytical strategies were tailored to each method’s temporal scale, ensuring alignment between the data's form, the level of analysis, and the research aims. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This paper demonstrates that video-based methods are not interchangeable tools but purpose-driven methodological choices that produce distinct forms of educational knowledge. Real-time video is well-suited to examining pedagogical interaction, instructional intent, and teacher decision-making at the micro level of classroom practice. Time-lapse video, by contrast, enables analysis of spatio-temporal patterns of use that structure everyday educational activity but remain largely invisible in real-time observation. The findings underscore the importance of aligning research questions, temporal scale, and methodological approach in learning environment research. As schools increasingly operate in shared, flexible, and multifunctional spaces, understanding educational space requires methods capable of capturing both interactional detail and longer-term patterns of use. Failure to make this distinction risks conflating pedagogical practices with spatial structures or overlooking how organisational routines and design features shape learning opportunities. Methodologically, the paper contributes to a growing body of research calling for greater temporal sensitivity in the study of educational space. By demonstrating how different video-based methods align with distinct analytical aims, the paper provides a practical framework for selecting appropriate methods for future research, evaluation, and design. Within the symposium, this contribution offers a methodological anchor that complements studies on spatial typologies, affordances, teacher roles, and learning environment design. It supports evidence-informed approaches to evaluating and redesigning educational spaces in ways that respond to the evolving goals, practices, and spatial demands of contemporary schooling. Paper Education Influencers as Digital Knowledge Brokers: Attitudes Towards Using Research Syntheses in Social Media Communication University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany Presenting Author:Social media platforms have become central to educators' information seeking (e.g., Besa, 2024). However, the quality and evidence base of educational content on these platforms varies considerably, with AI-generated and unverified information proliferating alongside practitioner experiences. Education influencers occupy a unique position: they have both reach and credibility with practitioners, yet their relationship to research evidence remains underexplored. This study examines whether and how education influencers engage with scientific evidence, particularly research syntheses, when creating content for social media. It is well established in international educational research that the uptake of scientific findings can contribute to improving school practice and student achievement. At the same time, significant challenges persist in educators’ reception, interpretation, and implementation of research evidence (Bauer & Kollar, 2023; Cain, 2016; Rycroft-Smith & Stylianides, 2022). In this context, research syntheses have been highlighted as a particularly valuable resource for bridging the science-practice gap. By consolidating empirical evidence, offering new perspectives on data, and enabling robust assessments of generalisability, they represent an efficient and credible form of educational knowledge (Gough & Thomas, 2016; Kerres et al., 2022; Wilmers, 2024). While research syntheses offer a promising solution, critical questions remain regarding their communication: How must they be adapted for different audiences? Which formats and channels facilitate their uptake among practitioners? Empirical research on their use within contemporary knowledge transfer pathways – particularly through social media – remains scarce (Gorard et al., 2020). At the same time, social media platforms are increasingly used by teachers internationally for professional exchange, including the sharing of experiential knowledge and instructional resources (e.g., Besa, 2024). Within these online environments, education influencers have emerged as key multipliers and opinion leaders (Carpenter et al., 2021; Jahn et al., 2024; Kühn & Reismeyer, 2021). Due to their substantial reach, they often engage audiences that academic researchers cannot easily access directly (Jahn et al., 2024). Education influencers may therefore shape other educators’ practices, philosophies, and professional identities (Carpenter et al., 2021). Despite this growing relevance, research on evidence-informed content dissemination via education influencers remains limited. Yet education influencers and research syntheses represent a potentially powerful combination: syntheses provide compact, evidence-based knowledge; influencers are authentic intermediaries with established credibility in digital teacher communities. Against this background, the present contribution examines the potentials and challenges of using research syntheses as a basis for social media content produced by education influencers, with the aim of strengthening science-practice transfer in education. The study addresses the following research questions:
Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Conceptualising influencers as knowledge brokers between educational research and practice, an ongoing online survey study is being conducted with education influencers who produce either German-language content (e.g., based in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland) or English-language content (e.g., based in the UK, Ireland or USA). The survey assesses both participants’ prior experience with and knowledge of research syntheses, as well as their attitudes towards employing such evidence sources in social media content. Attitudinal dispositions are measured through an adapted version of the Evidence-Based Practice Attitude Scale (EBPAS; Merle et al., 2023), modified to reflect the specific context. In addition, participants provide information on key characteristics of their online activity, including their intended audience, preferred platforms, and typical posting formats. These variables allow for a more differentiated understanding of how knowledge transfer practices are shaped by platform-specific affordances and influencer profiles. To address RQs 3 and 4, participants complete a series of paired-comparison ranking tasks. Specifically, they are asked to evaluate multiple variants of graphical abstracts as transfer formats (e.g., comic-style visuals, plain-text summaries, and combined text–image formats). Furthermore, they rank different types of evidence-support offers, such as educational clearing houses, research posters, or other intermediary resources. For each ranking decision, respondents are invited to provide qualitative comments via open-ended items. Data collection for the German-speaking influencer subsample is already well advanced, whereas recruitment for the English-speaking subsample has only recently started. The current German-speaking sample comprises n = 49 education influencers who completed the full adapted EBPAS questionnaire. Participants represent a broad range of educational content domains. Most reported using social media primarily on Instagram, with comparatively low engagement on short-message platforms. Posting frequency typically ranged from weekly to daily. Regarding evidence engagement, approximately two thirds of respondents reported very low levels of knowledge about research syntheses. Prior use was similarly limited: 55.1% indicated no previous engagement, 38.8% occasional use, and 6.1% reported having contributed to the development of research syntheses themselves. In a pilot analysis addressing RQ2, Spearman rank correlations were computed between overall EBPAS scores and both self-reported knowledge and prior use of research syntheses. Once the full survey is completed, multiple regression analyses will be conducted to replicate these associations with increased statistical power, control for potential confounding variables, and explore differential patterns across attitudinal subdimensions. Ranking data from the paired-comparison tasks will be aggregated to produce overall preference orderings. Open-ended responses will be analysed through qualitative content analysis. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings In sum, education influencers in the current German-speaking pilot subsample expressed generally moderate attitudes towards evidence-based practices in the specific context of using research syntheses for social media communication. Preliminary findings indicate that knowledge of research syntheses may represent a key factor shaping influencers’ attitudes. Correlation analyses revealed differential patterns: while prior engagement with research syntheses was not significantly associated with attitudes towards evidence-based practice (ρ = .08, p = .60), self-reported knowledge of research syntheses showed a significant positive relationship of moderate strength with EBPAS scores (ρ = .31, p = .03). These results provide an initial empirical basis for understanding evidence-related orientations within a population that plays an increasingly influential role in informal educational knowledge dissemination. Building on these pilot insights, the ongoing main study aims to replicate and extend these findings in a larger and more internationally diverse sample, including English-speaking education influencers. Beyond overall associations, the study will examine subgroup differences and potential moderating factors that may shape evidence-use attitudes, such as influencers’ professional background (e.g., teachers, authors), preferred platforms (e.g., Instagram, YouTube), and dominant posting formats (e.g., short-form video, resource sharing). This will allow the identification of distinct profiles of digital knowledge brokers and the conditions under which research syntheses are more likely to be taken up. Future analyses will further explore whether specific attitudinal subdimensions (e.g., openness, fit, requirement) differentially predict influencers’ willingness to integrate research syntheses into their dissemination practices. Beyond academic relevance, the findings are expected to inform the development of targeted evidence-mobilisation strategies and tailored support formats for education influencers, including graphical abstracts and intermediary resources designed to facilitate accessible, credible, and platform-sensitive research communication. Overall, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of how digital knowledge brokers may strengthen the transfer of educational research evidence into practice.
