Paper Enhancing Lesson Engagement for Newly Arrived Students Through a Co‑Teaching Intervention University of Jyväskylä, Finland Presenting Author:Internationally, many countries continue to face challenges in ensuring inclusive school environments that support the engagement and educational success of newly arrived migrant students (OECD, 2019; Schachner et al., 2018). Early support in learning the language of instruction can improve learning outcomes and well-being; however, teachers feel they lack the necessary professional skills to support migrant students (Alisaari et al., 2022; Volknant & Licandro, 2024), or only seldom utilize co-teaching to develop this expertise (Taajamo et al., 2025; OECD, 2025). In culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms, versatile instruction and collaboration among teachers with varied professional backgrounds can enhance teaching effectiveness (Dooly & Llompart Esbert, 2025; Sing & Jeannin, 2018). Although co-teaching approaches have been commonly applied to teaching students with special needs (see e.g. Friend & Cook, 1993; Barron & Friend, 2024), their potential to support the engagement of newly arrived students remains largely unexplored. As robust experimental designs are still needed to examine co-teaching’s impact (see De Weerdt et al., 2025), in this presentation, a co-teaching intervention is carried out to examine co-teaching's effectiveness in supporting newly arrived students’ lesson engagement. With increasing migration, newly arrived students face additional educational transitions, such as changing school levels or programs, which are critical points for student engagement and well-being (Singh et al., 2022). For migrant students, transitions propose simultaneous challenges with both building new social networks and learning the increasingly complex language of schooling. In Finland, these transition processes are particularly salient as a growing number of migrant students enter the education system through preparatory education (prep-ed) (Vipunen, 2025). In prep-ed, new arrival youth focus on learning the language of instruction during their first academic year, and from there, they gradually transition to lower secondary school (Finnish National Agency for Education, 2015). Supporting this transition requires providing lower secondary level subject teachers with resources for linguistically and culturally inclusive pedagogy. This support is essential for promoting positive engagement as they invite newly arrived students into their classrooms. Students’ engagement at school emerges gradually, from one lesson to the next. Lesson engagement highlights a distinct contextual dimension of student engagement by capturing how engaged students are in specific learning situations (Pöysä, 2020). Similarly to the overall student engagement, lesson engagement can also be seen as a tripartite construct with affective, behavioral and cognitive aspects of engagement (see Appleton et al., 2008; Fredricks et al., 2004). Considering the highly malleable nature of lesson engagement, teacher collaboration has the potential to increase teaching efficacy (Sasson & Malkinson, 2021; Satterlee Vizenor & Matuska, 2018) thereby fostering increased lesson engagement among new arrivals. Previously, the lesson engagement of mainstream students has been connected to the subject being studied (e.g., Vasalampi et al., 2021), time of lesson (e.g. Martin et al., 2015), types of learning activities (Heemskerk & Malmberg, 2020), teachers’ emotions (Pöysä et al., 2025), classroom organization (Pöysä et al., 2019), and emotional support from teachers (Pöysä et al., 2018; Pöysä et al. 2019). Against this backdrop, co-teaching offers a promising instructional structure through which teachers can enhance these dimensions of instruction, yet its potential for supporting newly arrived students’ lesson engagement has remained unexplored. To address this gap, the present study conducts a co‑teaching intervention in which prep‑ed and subject teachers collaborate to deliver high‑quality instruction for newly arrived students. The study is guided by the following research question: How does students’ affective, cognitive, and behavioral lesson engagement vary by teachers’ quality of collaboration during lessons? Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study implements a quasi-experimental design, where a co-teaching intervention is carried out for lower-secondary level prep-ed and subject teachers from autumn 2025 to early spring 2026. First, subject teachers participate in a 2-hour research-based (e.g. Teemant, 2018) workshop focusing on co-teaching and providing high-quality instruction for culturally and linguistically diverse students led by the researchers. As the intervention period begins, one group of approximately 20 newly arrived 12–16-year-old students attend both regular (control) and co-taught (treatment) lessons. Students report their lesson engagement immediately after each lesson with the InSitu-instrument (Vasalampi et al., 2016). Answers to the questions are given on a four-point scale from not at all to very much. During the same lessons, researchers observe the teachers’ collaboration. Furthermore, information on students’ demographics, and teacher reports on student school absences and school readiness are gathered with a separate questionnaire. Translations of all the surveys will be provided to ensure participants’ understanding. Co-teaching practices are observed utilizing an adapted version of Rogers’ (2016) Classroom observation instrument for implementation of co-teaching practices (CTOI). The instrument’s conceptualization of co-teaching includes four dimensions: classroom interaction, classroom management, instructional strategies, and instructional roles. These dimensions have been reducted to include five observable items in each sub-category with a rating scale from 0–5. At least 20 percent of the lessons will be rated by two researchers who have been trained in the use of the instrument and who have independently demonstrated an adequate level of inter-rater agreement. These ratings will be applied in the analysis to account for the prep-ed and subject teachers’ quality of collaboration. For the analysis, Multilevel Latent Growth Curve Model (Muthén, 1997) is implemented to examine changes in lesson engagement over time. First, confirmatory factor analysis is applied for assessing the InSitu-survey’s accuracy within this sample. Then, the latent growth components, intercept and slope, are specified at level 2 to represent between-student differences in initial lesson engagement and rates of change. At level 1, between lessons, the quality of collaboration is included as a continuous time-varying predictor to assess experimental effects. Student background variables are incorporated as covariates to control for level 2 individual differences. With covariates of student background information accounted for, initial rates of lesson engagement and change based on the quality of teacher collaboration can be determined. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Preliminary analysis of student background information suggests the participants’ mean age of 14.33 years (SD=0.77). The group of students differ highly on their schooling history with the mean of 6.06 years and standard deviation of 3.24 years, but their teacher’s assessment of school readiness mean of 2.33 out of 4 (SD=0.84) indicates relatively satisfactory academic abilities. Regarding transitioning to lower secondary school, this group of students enter lessons taught by subject teachers with varying prior educational opportunities and knowledge. Descriptive analysis of preliminary level 2 data from 21 measure points, from two separate co-taught (but not rated) lessons, suggests relatively high lesson engagement in all three sub-categories. High affective (M=3.76, SD=0.92) and especially behavioural (M=3.90, SD=0.92) lesson engagement indicate students finding the lessons enjoyable and putting effort into fulfilling teachers’ behavioural expectations. Cognitive lesson engagement values (M=3.45, SD=0.89) indicate more difficulties with students being well-prepared for the lessons or working persistently to achieve learning goals. The three level 2 lesson engagement variables showed strong associations with one another (r=.62–.84). These tentative results illustrate the need to focus on individualized instructional support during the co-teaching intervention. The results of this study will allow for determining the effects of co-teaching on newly arrived students’ lesson engagement. These results can be utilized when planning support for the transition phase, as lower cognitive engagement underscores the need for scaffolding to build academic readiness and sustained effort. With the information from lesson observations, best practices for co-teaching new arrivals can be described. Taken together, these results provide emerging evidence on how co-teaching structures can enhance lesson engagement and equity during educational transitions. Analyzing the full dataset will enable us to more accurately trace engagement patterns over time and determine which instructional approaches most effectively promote new arrivals’ lesson engagement. Ignite Talk Enhancing Motivation and Self-Esteem of Students with Special Educational Needs in Inclusive Physical Education: A Lesson Study Approach NIS Shymkent, Kazakhstan Presenting Author:Inclusive education seeks to ensure equitable learning opportunities for all students, regardless of individual abilities or educational needs. Within inclusive school environments, physical education (PE) plays a key role in promoting physical health, psychosocial wellbeing, social interaction, and positive self-perception. For students with special educational needs (SEN), participation in PE lessons is particularly important, as it supports motor development, emotional stability, and self-confidence. Despite its potential, research and school practice indicate that students with SEN often encounter psychological and physical barriers in PE lessons. Limited motor coordination, reduced endurance, fear of failure, and negative comparison with peers may lead to decreased motivation and low self-esteem. These challenges frequently result in passive participation or avoidance of physical activity, undermining both educational and health-related outcomes. From a health education perspective, there is a need for pedagogical approaches that actively support motivation, wellbeing, and positive self-concept among students with SEN. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The study employed a qualitative pedagogical design based on the Lesson Study cycle, involving PE teachers and specialists in psychological and pedagogical support. Students with SEN were identified as focus learners. At the lesson planning stage, inclusive PE lessons were collaboratively designed to include differentiated motor tasks, variable levels of difficulty, adapted equipment, and flexible pacing. The primary objective was to ensure active participation and experiences of success for all students. During lesson implementation, systematic observations were conducted to document students’ engagement, initiative, emotional responses, peer interaction, and reactions to success or difficulty. In addition, short semi-structured interviews were carried out with focus students to explore their perceptions of participation, confidence, and attitudes toward PE. The analysis and reflection stage involved collective discussion of observational and interview data. Subsequent lessons were refined based on identified student needs and learning behaviors. The study is grounded in the principles of inclusive education and health education, which emphasize learner-centeredness, equity, individual progress, and psychosocial wellbeing. In the European context, inclusive education is viewed as a systemic approach to removing barriers to participation and promoting meaningful engagement of all learners. Health education highlights the role of schools in fostering health literacy, wellbeing, and sustainable health-related behaviors. Motivation is conceptualized as a key determinant of sustained engagement in physical activity. According to self-determination theory, motivation is strengthened when learners experience autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Students with SEN often face challenges in these areas, making supportive pedagogical strategies essential for promoting intrinsic motivation. Self-esteem is understood as a core component of emotional wellbeing and self-efficacy. In inclusive PE, positive self-perception is closely linked to experiences of success, supportive feedback, and meaningful social interaction. Lesson Study is conceptualized as a form of collaborative professional inquiry that shifts the focus from teaching performance to students’ learning experiences, enabling teachers to make evidence-informed pedagogical decisions aimed at improving motivation and wellbeing. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The Lesson Study process conducted with Grade 8 students revealed several pedagogical approaches that positively influenced motivation and self-esteem among students with SEN. Differentiation of motor tasks was associated with increased engagement, with approximately 78% of students demonstrating higher activity levels and greater willingness to participate. Supportive feedback emphasizing individual effort and progress contributed to improved emotional climate, with around 72% of students reporting increased confidence and reduced fear of making mistakes. Game-based and team activities fostered social inclusion and a sense of belonging, as approximately 75% of students showed improved peer interaction and initiative. Creating situations of success through recognition of small achievements emerged as a critical factor in strengthening self-esteem. No noticeable change was observed in approximately 3% of students, while others showed partial improvement, indicating the need for continued individualized support. The findings demonstrate that Lesson Study is an effective approach for developing inclusive and health-oriented PE practices. By enabling collaborative reflection on students’ learning experiences, Lesson Study supports the creation of motivational, supportive, and psychologically safe learning environments. From a health education perspective, the study contributes to inclusive PE models that promote wellbeing, self-efficacy, and sustainable engagement in physical activity among students with SEN. Ignite Talk Enhancing Interpersonal Communication and Supporting 7th Grade Students’ Adaptation through Cooperative Learning Methods Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools, Kazakhstan Presenting Author:This action research study investigates how cooperative learning strategies support interpersonal communication and social adaptation among newly admitted Grade 7 students. Conducted at the Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Science and Mathematics in Karatau district of Shymkent, Kazakhstan, this research contributes to broader European and international discussions on student-centred pedagogical practices by demonstrating how cooperative learning strategies can support newly admitted students’ social adaptation and the development of interpersonal relationships. In Kazakhstan, students enter Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools from diverse educational, regional, and socio-cultural backgrounds starting from Grade 7. For many learners, this transition is accompanied by social stress, limited peer interaction, and difficulties in building interpersonal relationships. The formation of students’ interpersonal relationships remains a challenge in contemporary education systems. Although learning is often described as a social process, in practice many students struggle to communicate effectively, particularly when they enter unfamiliar school environments. Social isolation, misunderstandings among peers, feelings of insecurity, and a reluctance to engage in collaborative work are common features of classroom life and frequently contribute to a negative psychological climate and declining learning motivation. When these social dynamics are overlooked, the adaptation process can become a source of stress rather than growth. International research on cooperative learning has demonstrated its effectiveness in developing students’ social skills, interpersonal communication, and ability to work collaboratively. In particular, the works of David W. Johnson and Roger T. Johnson (2009) emphasize cooperative learning as an effective approach that enhances not only academic achievement but also social, personal, and communicative skills. Studies by Slavin (1995) highlight that certain modifications of cooperative learning, which incorporate intergroup competition, can increase students’ engagement and motivation. In contrast, Kagan’s (Kagan, n.d.) structural approach to cooperative learning focuses on helping students perceive one another as equal partners rather than rivals, thereby fostering harmonious interpersonal relationships. Additionally, researchers studying Singapore’s (2014) educational practices conclude that cooperative learning positively influences collaboration, critical thinking, and communication skills. This study addresses the following research question: - Which teaching strategies support students’ learning as equal partners within learning environments grounded in trust and cooperation rather than competition? To address these questions, a qualitative research approach was adopted involving 15 students Grade 7 from 1 class. A Peer Relations Questionnaire collected at the beginning of the academic year indicated that 80% of newly admitted Grade 7 students required psychological and pedagogical support in adapting to the new school environment. This study responds to this challenge by examining whether cooperative learning strategies can reduce social isolation and promote meaningful peer interaction.
Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Based on these theoretical foundations, cooperative learning strategies appropriate to students’ age characteristics were implemented for 3 months during the first term of the 2025–2026 academic year. In Grade 7C (15 learners), Spencer Kagan’s structure-based Mix-Pair-Share strategy was adapted and applied through an activity titled “Connect the Bridge”. Several modifications were made to the given method, as a result cards were distributed so that one student who did not usually interact with others received a card with a question, while another received a card with the corresponding answer. This intervention was intentionally implemented to promote purposeful interaction, encouraging students to find their “matching pair,” engage in dialogue, and collaboratively complete the task. To find the correct answer to their question, each student approached several classmates and exchanged ideas with them. After finding their matching pair, the students were given a shared task to complete together. During the “Connect the Bridge” activity conducted based on the Mix-Pair-Share method, students demonstrated a high level of emotional engagement, which enabled them to quickly establish communication with one another. Through peer teaching, they were able to master the tasks effectively. The “Clock Buddies” method proposed by us contributed to cooperative learning, to students working as equal partners according to a defined structure, and to establishing relationships based on trust rather than competition. This study addresses a gap in the literature by examining cooperative learning as a psychosocial support mechanism during school transition rather than as an instructional strategy for academic outcomes. When applying the “Clock Buddies” method, students worked as equal partners following a structured procedure. They were able to build relationships based on trust rather than competition. Students who rarely interacted with each other were intentionally given cards containing either questions or corresponding answers. This intervention required students to actively communicate with classmates in order to find their matching pair. After finding their partner, students were given a joint task to complete together. Specifically, they were asked to conduct a step-by-step literary analysis of a poem. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings To determine the extent to which the implemented methods contributed to strengthening students’ interpersonal communication, a Peer Relations Questionnaire was conducted again. The questionnaire results were compared with the initial data, revealing a positive dynamic in interpersonal relationships among students. The proportion of students requiring additional support in the classroom decreased from 80% to 33%, indicating that most learners had adapted to the new environment and shown improvement in their interpersonal communication with classmates. Qualitative data were gathered through classroom observations, a reflective teacher journal, and student interviews. This triangulation allowed for a comprehensive analysis of changes in students’ interpersonal behaviour, engagement, and confidence in peer interaction. Students demonstrated increased willingness to communicate, collaborate, and support peers during group tasks. While cooperative learning has been widely studied in academic achievement contexts, fewer studies have explored its role in supporting social adaptation and well-being during critical school transitions. This action research contributes to the field by examining cooperative learning as a psychosocial support mechanism for newly admitted students in a selective school context. This study aligns with the European and global agenda for inclusive and equitable quality education, emphasizing student well-being, social inclusion, and supportive learning environments as key conditions for sustainable educational development. The findings suggest that cooperative learning strategies can be beneficial for both public and private schools across European contexts, where students commonly transition to secondary education between Grades 5 and 7, a period often associated with increased social and emotional challenge. Overall, the three-month intervention resulted in increased trust among students and the gradual formation of a warm, supportive classroom atmosphere. The findings suggest that systematic use of cooperative learning strategies significantly contributes to the successful adaptation of newly admitted students, the development of interpersonal communication skills, and effective collaborative learning.
