Paper Self-Efficacy and Professional Development in Early Childhood Education 1: West University of Timisoara, Romania; 2: Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu, Romania Presenting Author:Topic This study examines the role of preschool teachers’ self-efficacy in the context of early childhood education and investigates how continuous professional development contributes to strengthening teachers’ perceived capacity to manage classroom situations, engage children, and adapt instructional strategies. The topic is anchored in recent debates on the quality of early childhood education in Romania and responds to the need to understand how professional standards and training experiences shape educators’ confidence in practice. Objective The main objective of the study is to evaluate the impact of a quasi-experimental training intervention on teachers’ self-efficacy, measured before and after participation. Specifically, the aim is to determine whether teachers in the experimental group report higher levels of perceived efficacy in:
Secondary objectives include analysing changes in the distribution of self-efficacy levels (continuous and ordinal scores) and testing whether initial competencies and contextual variables moderate the training effect. Theoretical Framework This study is positioned at the intersection of social-cognitive theory and contemporary perspectives on early childhood professional practice. Bandura’s model conceptualises self-efficacy as a belief system shaped by mastery experiences, social modelling, verbal feedback, and affective states, all of which regulate professional engagement and persistence (Bandura, 1997). In early childhood settings, these mechanisms are shaped by daily pedagogical routines, the emotional climate of the classroom, and educators’ opportunities to experiment with new approaches. The present research draws on this premise by designing a training programme that intentionally integrates guided practice, feedback cycles, and reflective journaling as potential “sources of efficacy information” for participants. Tschannen-Moran & Woolfolk Hoy’s teacher efficacy model further structures the framework along three instructional domains—engagement, classroom management, and instructional adaptation—areas that align closely with Romanian professional standards for early childhood education introduced in 2024. By mapping the subscales of the measurement instrument to these standards, the study assumes that self-efficacy is not merely a psychological construct but a practice-oriented indicator of professional functioning, embedded in policy expectations and organisational culture. This conceptual anchoring supports the argument that efficacy growth can be interpreted as both an individual cognitive shift and a response to systemic professional demands. Finally, the quasi-experimental design operationalises the framework by testing whether increases in self-efficacy can be observed when teachers are exposed to structured learning conditions that approximate real pedagogical work rather than abstract theory. In this sense, the framework assumes a bidirectional relationship: the intervention is expected to enhance efficacy beliefs, and, reciprocally, strengthened efficacy should support the transfer of new practices to classroom contexts. This positioning situates the study within ongoing international debates about how professional development can function not only as skill acquisition, but as a mechanism for reshaping teachers’ interpretive frameworks, decision-making routines, and professional identity. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Methodology / Methods This study employed a quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test design with a control group, implemented in authentic early childhood education settings. The sample consisted of 60 preschool teachers, assigned to an experimental group (n = 30) and a control group (n = 30). Both groups completed the same self-efficacy scale at two measurement points: before the professional development programme and immediately after its completion. Group allocation sought to ensure baseline comparability in demographic and professional characteristics, allowing post-intervention differences to be interpreted primarily as effects of the training rather than of pre-existing variance. The intervention provided to the experimental group integrated three strands aligned with national professional standards: child engagement, classroom management, and instructional adaptation. Training activities combined conceptual input, analysis of authentic classroom scenarios, guided planning tasks, and reflective journaling to support transfer into daily practice. The control group continued routine activity without receiving programme-related support during the intervention period. All participants were informed about confidentiality, voluntary participation, and the use of data at an aggregated level only. Research Instruments / Sources Used Self-efficacy was measured using a 59-item self-report scale, structured into a global score and three subscales corresponding to the domains targeted by the intervention. Items assessed educators’ perceived capacity to stimulate children’s participation, manage disruptive situations, and differentiate instruction according to developmental needs. Responses were recorded on a multi-point Likert scale. Internal consistency was verified through Cronbach’s Alpha (.935–.955), supporting the instrument’s reliability for both continuous and ordinal analyses. To enable interpretability, continuous scores were also recoded into 3- and 5-level ordinal categories. Data analysis proceeded in multiple steps: -descriptive statistics to examine initial comparability and post-intervention profiles; -analyses of variance (ANOVA) to test differences between groups at both measurement points; -regression modelling to estimate the unique contribution of the intervention while controlling for pre-test scores and demographic variables (age, rank, educational level, class size, setting). Results indicated that group membership and pre-test scores were the strongest predictors of post-test self-efficacy, while contextual variables exerted comparatively minimal influence. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The study shows that a structured professional development programme, implemented in authentic early childhood settings, is associated with substantial growth in teachers’ perceived self-efficacy. Although the experimental and control groups began with comparable pre-test levels, post-test results demonstrate a clear divergence: teachers who participated in the intervention reported higher confidence in engaging children, managing classroom dynamics, and adapting instruction, whereas the control group presented only minimal change over the same period. This pattern is reflected consistently across descriptive statistics, ANOVA comparisons, and regression analyses. Group membership emerged as the strongest predictor of post-test outcomes, followed by initial efficacy levels, while demographic and contextual factors—such as class size, residence, or formal education—had limited or statistically insignificant effects. Activities combining modelling, guided practice, scenario-based analysis and reflective journaling provided teachers with concrete mastery experiences—conditions identified by social-cognitive theory as central to strengthening efficacy beliefs. This suggests that effective professional development does not rely solely on the transmission of content but on creating opportunities for educators to test, apply and reinterpret their own practice within a supportive framework. These findings have both practical and conceptual implications. Practically, they indicate that professional development aligned with real classroom demands can function as a mechanism for consolidating professional identity and decision-making autonomy. Conceptually, the results support the assumption that self-efficacy is a malleable construct shaped by contextualised learning experiences rather than a fixed personal trait. The consistency of post-intervention effects suggests that similar programmes could be replicated in other early childhood contexts to inform policy, training design, and mentoring strategies aimed at improving teaching quality. Paper The Effects of Pedagogical Intervention on Early Childhood Professionals’ Emotional Availability and Their Ability to Consider Children's Temperament Characteristics in Interaction 1: University of Helsinki, Finland; 2: Tampere University; 3: University of Eastern Finland Presenting Author:This is a summary of two studies that examines the effects of pedagogical intervention on the emotional availability (EA) of early childhood professionals’ (ECPs’) and their ability to consider the different temperamental characteristics of children in early childhood education and care (ECEC) group interactions. The study takes a professionally developmental approach, and the long-term training and video-based feedback are used to strengthen the emotional availability of professionals in group interactions. The study uses a before-and-after research design, which can be used to identify changes over time in the interaction of professionals in the intervention group compared to the control group. The effects of the intervention on interaction between early childhood professionals and children in ECEC are discussed in this summary based on two previously published studies (Harkoma et al., 2021; Harkoma et al., 2022). This summary provides comprehensive answers to the following two research questions: 1) What effects does pedagogical intervention have on the emotional availability of professionals in group interactions? and 2) What effects does pedagogical intervention have on professionals’ ability to be emotionally available in a group to children with different temperament characteristics? This is Europe's first intervention study to apply the theoretical framework of Emotional Availability (EA) in ECEC. Similar intervention study has been implemented previously in United States with promising results (Biringen et al., 2012). The framework of Emotional Availability approaches interaction between adult and children from the perspective of attachment theory (Bowlby, 1969). Emotional availability refers to the reciprocity of interaction, and adult's ability to perceive children's emotional signals and respond to them appropriately (Biringen et al., 2014; Emde, 2000). The study also examined the connection between the quality of interaction and children’s temperament, an area in which very little previous research exists in ECEC (De Schipper et al., 2008; Rudasill & Rimm-Kaufman, 2009). Temperament is defined using Rothbart's psychobiological approach, in which temperament is “constitutionally based individual differences in reactivity and self-regulation, influenced over time by genes, maturation and experience” (Rothbart, 2012, p. 9; see also Rothbart & Derryberry, 1981). The early childhood professionals in the intervention group received theoretical training that included, for example, knowledge on attachment relationships, sensitive interaction and considering children’s individual characteristics in group interactions. The training lasted three months, and it included five 90-minute sessions with the supervisor familiar with the subject. During the training, professionals also received video-based feedback on their interactions with the group of children. It was important that the feedback given to the professionals focused on their individual and professional strengths in interaction. The aim of the feedback was to reinforce their experiences of success with the group of children. The training was designed to support individual and team reflection, as it gave professionals the opportunity to participate in discussions and express their views on children and their interactions with them. Reflection on interaction continued after the training with a diary that was written regularly and returned to the researchers by the end of the study. The diaries were used to assess intervention fidelity of professionals. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used A total of 74 early childhood professionals and 274 children participated in the study. The final pool of professionals in the first study was 61 (intervention group 41; control group 20) and children in the second study was 136 (intervention group 87; control group 49). Written consent was received from the participating professionals and children's guardians for the study. The voluntary nature of the children's consent was ensured by observing their verbal and nonverbal communication during video observation. According to the preliminary ethical assessment conducted by the Research Ethics Committee in the Humanities and Social and Behavioural Sciences (University of Helsinki), the study was ethically acceptable. The research data was collected by videoing and observing interactions between early childhood professionals and children using the Emotional Availability Scales (Biringen et al., 2014). The method included dimensions adult sensitivity, structuring, non-intrusiveness, non-hostility, and child responsiveness and involvement. The study period was nine months and in the first study, video observations were conducted before the intervention training, six months and nine months after the beginning of the study. In the second study, video observation conducted before the intervention training, and nine months after the beginning of the study were used in the data analyses. EA dimensions were assessed by trained and certified researcher. In addition, inter-rater reliability of EA assessments was achieved by using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) at r > 0.80 with the assistance of an external EA trained researcher who was blind to the background information of study participants. In the second study, temperament survey for children’s guardians was used to assess children’s individual differences in temperament. The survey data was collected by using the Early Childhood Behavior Questionnaire and Children's Behavior Questionnaire forms (Putnam et al., 2006; Rothbart et al., 2001). The questionnaires included a Likert-type scale of 1=never, 4=about half of the time and 7=always. The study included temperament dimensions Positive Anticipation, High Intensity Pleasure, Activity Level, Impulsivity, Discomfort, Fear, Anger/Frustration, Sadness, Soothability, Inhibitory Control, Attentional Focusing, Low Intensity Pleasure, and Perceptual Sensitivity. The reliability of the temperament dimensions was evaluated with a satisfying result of Cronbach’s α 0.641–0.910. The quantitative data were analyzed using statistical methods such as repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) and covariance analysis (ANCOVA). The regularity of the professionals' reflective diary entries was described quantitatively. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The results of the first study showed that the emotional availability, especially sensitivity and non-intrusiveness of early childhood professionals in the intervention group, increased during the intervention compared to the control group. This means that the professionals became more able to express their emotions and receive emotional signals from the children without being overly intrusive towards them. According to the results of second study, the emotional availability of professionals in the intervention group increased in relation to the different temperament characteristics of children compared to the control group. Most differences between the study groups were found in children who had a more active temperament and stronger tendency to seek pleasurable experiences. Differences in terms of professionals’ emotional availability were also evident among children who had challenges to focus their attention and regulate their own behavior and emotions. Based on the results, it appears that the intervention is particularly beneficial for the children who belong to the risk group in terms of temperament, and who needs adult sensitive interaction and emotional support in ECEC. The conclusions of the study expand the theoretical and practical understanding of pedagogical interventions and their effects on the quality of interaction in ECEC. The implementation and effects of the intervention are examined using the Ecosystem Model of Inclusive Early Childhood Education (European Agency for Special Needs and Inclusive Education, 2017). The potential of the intervention to support adult’s professional development and child belongingness, engagement, and learning among all children in ECEC is discussed. In addition, the benefits and limitations of the intervention are discussed from the perspective of community, regional, and national structures in ECEC. Paper Journal Club as a Tool for Continuous Professional Development of Early Childhood Education Teachers: A Case Study AMAA, Armenia Presenting Author:Teacher professional development activities are essential for teacher continious learning but to be targeted and successful they need to be context-embedded (Kyureghyan, 2023). This case study aims to explore a ‘Journal club’ as a professional development approach for novice ECE teachers. Journal clubs are informal and structured gathering to discuss research and practice literature to keep practitioners up to date, providing an opportunity to discuss how research is relevant to their practice and develop critical thinking skils (Linzer, 1987; Sidorov, 1995). Discussions are led by a facilitator who leads the group through thinking and reflection. Initially coming from medical field, the use of journal cubs in education settings has increased in recent years as research engagement has become more widespread in professional development and considered to be central in enhancing teachers’ professional learning and pedagogical practice (Admiraal et al., 2017; Elder and Crain-Dorough, 2021, Kowalczuk-Walędziak and Ion, 2024). This study examines the implementation of a journal club model for ECE teachers in a newly opened pre-school in Armenia to engage them in continious professional learning. The research question of this study was: · How does the journal club function as a form of professional development for novice ECE teachers? An interpretive qualitative case study (Yin, 2018) was employed drawing on social constructivist perspectives (Cochran-Smith, & Lytle, 1999) to examine the implementation and function of a journal club as a professional development approach for novice ECE teachers. Primary data consist of my field notes taken during and after each discussion meeting and semi-structured interviews with participating teachers. Overall, 15 topics were discussed as part of Journal club meetings. These interactions not only prompted critical reflection on pedagogical practice but also surfaced context-specific issues that teachers were encountering in their work. The journal club thus functioned both as CPD and as a form of mentoring, with sustained peer dialogue around practical and theoretical concepts. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study employs an interpretive qualitative case study design (Yin, 2018) to examine the implementation and function of a journal club as a professional development approach for novice early childhood education (ECE) teachers. The journal club was facilitated by the researcher, who selected readings and guided discussions aligned with participants’ professional needs and the researcher's knowledge of the context and professional judgement. Fifteen discussion topics were addressed over the course of the journal club meetings, which provided structured opportunities for teachers to critically engage with professional literature, reflect on practice, and discuss context-specific challenges. Primary data sources include reflective field notes made during and after each meeting, capturing both group interactions and moderator's reflections, as well as semi-structured interviews with participating teachers to explore their perceptions of professional learning and emergent experiences. Data were analyzed thematically, drawing on a social constructivist perspective (Cochran-Smith & Lytle, 1999) to interpret collaborative sense-making, reflection, and community participation, and on teacher mentoring literature (Feiman-Nemser, 1998a; Hobson et al., 2009) to identify the informal mentoring functions that emerged during discussions. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Initial findings indicate that regular journal club meetings created a feeling of need in teachers as they reported to engage with professional reading/topics as well as developed participants’ abilities to read and apply professional literature through questioning and reflecting on their own practice. Meanwhile, the criticality in reading was still lacking and data shows that more emphasis is needed either through designing targeted JC interventions or activities that promote criticality. Teachers reported that the discussions helped them anticipate classroom challenges, articulate professional questions, and even apply their learning in their personal life (e.g. interaction with their children). Furthermore, the informal, discussion-based format appeared to support novice teachers and biweekly meetings served as a kind of a mentoring. The results suggest that JCs hold promise as informal, collaborative CPD formats for teachers. Moreover, these journal club meetings teachers reported experiencing a unique kind of mentoring when getting pedagogical guidance (core mentoring function for novice teachers, Feiman-Nemser (1998a) by linking research-based ideas to immediate instructional practices. Continued exploration of this model for both CPD and mentoring is recommended, particularly for novice teachers contexts where practice embedded and community supported informal learning opportunities are needed and formal professional learning opportunities are limited. Paper Intertextual Children’s Perspectives: Coplanning a Professional Development Module for Teachers with Teachers University of Luxembourg, Luxembourg Presenting Author:Topic and research questions Collaboration is an important component of teacher professional development (Lipscombe et al. 2020), and literature highlights that teachers benefit from collaboration in professional learning communities. Teacher professional learning needs to be close to practice (Wermke 2010), and in the work presented in this proposal we explore the ways in which teachers and researchers collaborated to create a professional learning module (PLM) that is both collaborative and also aligned with teachers’ needs. This proposal represents one study from a project which had the goal of developing PLMs that are responsive to teachers’ needs and that builds from their experiences. This proposal examines the coplanning process undertaken by a team of primary teachers and university researchers as they worked to codesign a PLM within early childhood science education in [European country]. This PLM targets early childhood teachers and uses the narrative of the Three Little Pigs story as a central theme for its scientific activities and investigations. Coplanning with teachers provides a valuable space for sharing ideas, reflecting on past experiences, and developing mutual understandings of practice (Scantlebury et al. 2008). Within our work we sought to create a dialogic space for coplanning through the codesign of a PLM in a team consisting of in-service teachers and researchers. In this process, we noted that teachers often spoke from their perspectives of their students’ engagement with the investigations. From this initial observation, an analytic focus emerged from the coplanning process on the ways in which a diversity of children’s experiences and interests was represented in the teachers’ dialogue, how these mediated the context of the teacher-researcher coplanning sessions, and how these unfolded through the dialogue. The questions that guided our analysis are: 1. How do teachers draw on their perspectives of their students’ engagement within the coplanning sessions? 2. What structures support this sharing process? To address these questions, we consider the diverse ways in which children’s experiences are represented in teachers’ interactions during coplanning sessions for the PLM. Guiding theoretical framework Our work strives towards creating structures that nurture collaboration through a codesign process built on a foundation of coplanning, coteaching, and cogenerative dialogue (Author et al. 2025). Coteaching is guided by the notion of learning “at the elbow” of another, as coteachers learn from and with each other through teaching together (Roth and Tobin 2002). Coteaching brings individuals together and offers a space to coplan an educational activity, and then conduct it together, learning from each other, broadening pedagogical content knowledge, and challenging an idea of a lone teacher being responsible for quality education (Tobin and Roth 2006). Successful coteaching is a result of successful coplanning, as it is a process during which a shared responsibility for teaching and learning emerges. Coplanning and coteaching are grounded in cogenerative dialogue to incorporate multiple voices, experiences and different perspectives for establishing a plan of working towards shared objectives (Tobin 2006, Author 2011) and to support coteachers in reflexively considering their shared practice (Author and colleague 2011). In the context of our work, we coplan and then coteach PLMs, with the objective of bringing together different perspectives and experiences of teachers and researchers. Teachers come together with researchers in designing and implementing new educational activities that are built upon people’s expertise through cogenerative dialogue. Thus, the coplanning sessions are intended as spaces of 1. Open sharing of each others’ perspectives and experiences, 2. Designing a new educational structure, 3. Establishing shared responsibility for the outcomes. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Four teachers and six researchers participated in the codesign of the PLM. The teachers have expertise and experience within early childhood education in various settings, including special needs contexts and outdoor informal education. Six researchers include a professor, two senior researchers, a post-doc and two PhD students, who all work as a science education team at the University of [country]. The data resources analysed include 4.5 hours of video recordings from the two in-person coplanning sessions in Winter 2023 that were key in establishing the PLM’s outline, aims, and coteachers’ responsibilities. All members of the codesign team attended both sessions. During the coplanning sessions, we noticed that the teachers’ dialogue often included their perspectives on their students’ engagement with the investigations being discussed (i.e., statements often including “my kids… my students…”), and thus we engaged in a recursive and iterative analytic process that led to a refined focus on considering how their perception of their students’ experiences were woven into the teachers’ interactions during the coplanning process. We noted analytically that these included both i) their reflections as they look back at their implementation of the investigations with their students, as well as ii) their perspectives on their students’ possible future engagement, and this became central to the emergent interpretive analysis. The video recordings were manually transcribed, and the transcripts used the main data resource. We approach the research data through qualitative content analysis to provide a way to systematically describe the meaning of qualitative data through the generation of categories (Schreier 2012). Qualitative content analysis is defined by a focus on latent meaning and attention to context; it is also data-driven with more inferences to context, author, and recipients (Schreier 2012, p.17). Our role as participants enhanced the contextualized interpretive perspectives on the data. The research focus led to building categories around the ways in which teachers drew upon their perceptions of children’s engagement, and these are through three different categories: 1. Observations, 2. Reenactment, 3. Presentations. If accepted, during the presentation, we will contextualize these categories through narrative elaboration of data excerpts from the coplanning sessions. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings We found that children’s experiences with the investigations being coplanned by the codesign team enter the space of cogenerative dialogue in different ways - through teachers’ observations, reenactments, and presentation of photos, videos and drawings. Children’s perspectives are interpreted and shared by the teachers, who mediate and construct them during the dialogue, thus, children’s experiences and perspectives become recontextualized through a dialogic and intertextual process. Recontextualization implies the “dynamic transfer-and-transformation of something from one discourse/text-in-context” to another (Linell 1998, p. 144-145), and as teachers share their perspectives of children’s engagement, they layer children’s experiences into their dialogue in an intertextual process. As such, the cogenerative space serves as a structure for teachers to reflectively draw on their experiences as they recontextualize these in dialogue with the codesign team as resources for the collective. Science education at the early childhood level is mediated through children’s interactions - with each other, with materials, and with teachers (Matsui 2021), and it is essential to identify meaningful ways of engaging with children’s experiences (Shaw 2019). The structure of dialogic coplanning between teachers and researchers provides a space for teacher agency as they reflexively draw on their experiences with children to work together to create something new - the PLM. Our analysis has revealed how the teachers’ reflections on children’s experiences are central to the collective PLM planning processes. An important implication emerges in considering the complexity of ways in which the teachers drew on student-created resources in interaction. The analysis has highlighted the ways in which the teacher-researcher collaboration provided opportunities to both look back as well as look forward together, through dialogic and intertextual process that drew from different perspectives, opinions, and experiences, with the cogenerative nature affording welcoming, acknowledging, and responding to such differences.
