Paper Misaligned Literacies: A Linguistic Comparison of Romanian Textbooks and PISA Reading Assessments West University of Timisoara, Romania Presenting Author:The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) has become a globally recognized diagnostic tool for evaluating educational excellence, capturing significant media attention and serving as a benchmark for the performance of education systems across participating countries (Grey & Morris, 2018). While its impact is widely acknowledged, research has raised concerns about its alignment with national curricula, particularly in systems emphasizing literary heritage over functional literacy, as PISA tests do not always reflect the skills prioritized in school systems (Takayama, 2020). Additionally, PISA test structures often do not align with ministerial-approved teaching materials, creating disparities in student preparedness (Anagnostopoulou et al., 2013; Castello, 2008). Overemphasis on PISA rankings may also overshadow national educational priorities, potentially limiting students' broader development (Singer & Braun, 2018). Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used A comparative linguistic analysis was conducted using two datasets (i.e., ROLAT8 and PISA-READ) to systematically assess the divergence between Romanian teaching materials and PISA reading literacy tests. The first dataset, the ROLAT8 Corpus, comprises 257018 tokens extracted from three eighth-grade Romanian language and literature textbooks officially approved by the Romanian Ministry of Education. The second dataset, the PISA-READ Corpus, consists of publicly available PISA reading literacy test materials, including items from the PISA 2018 Released Field Trial and Main Survey New Reading Items in English and Romanian. Using #LancsBox X (Brezina & Platt, 2023) and Sketch Engine (Kilgarriff et al., 2014), the study examined lexical diversity, text complexity, and genre representation across both corpora. Additionally, reading comprehension exercises in Romanian textbooks were compared with the question types and assessment criteria used in PISA. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Our findings reveal a fundamental mismatch between Romanian eighth-grade textbooks and PISA reading literacy tests. While PISA prioritizes integrating multiple sources (26%), reflecting on content and form (19%), detecting textual conflicts (15%), and assessing credibility (7%), Romanian textbooks overwhelmingly emphasize literary interpretation and aesthetic appreciation. With 74% of all assigned readings classified as narrative, drama, or lyrical texts, Romanian students engage primarily in abstract literary analysis rather than argumentative reasoning or information processing. Linguistic analysis of ROLAT8 shows that textbook reading tasks focus on literary theory concepts, requiring students to analyze symbolism, metaphors, and poetic structures rather than evaluating arguments or verifying sources. In contrast, PISA-READ texts employ complex syntactic structures, discourse markers, and fact-based argumentation, essential for critical reading. The absence of journalistic, scientific, and digital texts in Romanian materials limits students’ exposure to real-world informational complexity (Spencer et al., 2019). This likely contributes to Romania’s low PISA reading literacy scores, as students trained in abstract literary interpretation struggle with pragmatic reading tasks. The study introduces a replicable, corpus-based comparative method for evaluating curriculum-exam alignment. By combining quantitative text analysis with qualitative genre evaluation, this approach can be applied in other national contexts to guide policy reforms that bridge the gap between national curricula and global literacy standards. Paper Knowing, Feeling, and Acting on Feedback: How Source and Language Shape Student Reactions in Higher Education Mälardalen University, Sweden Presenting Author:Feedback may be experienced as noticeably more emotional in a learner’s first language (L1) than in a second or foreign language (L2). This, according to Barrett’s (2017) Theory of Constructed Emotion, is due to emotions being constructed through prior experiences, bodily sensations, and language. In other words, L1 is typically acquired in emotionally rich contexts, whereas L2 is often learned in more neutral classroom settings, resulting in differences in emotional embodiment and lexicon (Dylman & Bjärtå, 2019; Sianipar et al., 2015; Tang & Ding, 2024). These differences can influence the ability to interpret, regulate, and act on feedback. The increasing presence of AI in European higher education is reshaping long-established pedagogical practices, including how feedback on student writing is generated, delivered and interpreted. While written feedback has long been recognized as central to learning (Krogstad Svanes & Skagen, 2017; Lyster, 2015; Morris et al., 2021), today, feedback is provided not only by human teachers or students but also by AI systems. The role of student agency in navigating this shift raises new questions about their trust, emotions, and willingness to engage with and act on feedback. Research shows that emotions play a crucial role in shaping the cognitive and motivational dimensions of learning (Dewaele & MacIntyre, 2014), and that feedback can either support or undermine learning depending on the emotions it evokes (Hattie & Timperley, 2017; Kralova et al., 2025; Pekrun et al., 2023). Work on written corrective feedback demonstrates that learners’ emotional and motivational engagement mediates whether feedback is taken up and acted upon (Cengiz et al., 2025; Zhang& Hyland, 2018). The present study is guided by the following research questions: 1) How do university students perceive written feedback depending on its source (human teacher vs. AI system) and language (L1 vs. L2)? 2) How do these perceptions shape students’ affective responses, trust, and engagement with feedback? The study adopts a sociocultural theoretical framework, drawing on Vygotsky’s (1978) concept of mediation and the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). From this perspective, feedback functions as a mediational tool that supports learning by guiding students’ attention, emotions, and actions. However, rather than treating feedback as a neutral instructional input, in this study, (1) how the perceived source of feedback, and (2) the language in which it is delivered, are treated as active contributors to students’ meaning-making and emotional engagement. Using experimental methods with fully between-subject’s design, university students with Swedish as L1 and English as L2 read a number of formative feedback samples, produced either by a human teacher or by AI and written in L1 or L2, in a 2x2 fashion. Participants’ affective reactions are measured on 10-point Likert-scales assessing anxiety, confidence, pride, anger, engagement, and trustworthiness. Background information on language use, proficiency, and education is collected to allow meaningful interpretation. A prior validation test with Swedish-speaking university instructors ensured that feedback samples, originally written in English and translated into Swedish, were linguistically natural and pedagogically authentic. The findings will show whether or not feedback is a neutral pedagogical input or an affectively charged interaction, shaped by students’ language backgrounds and assumptions about authorship. Based on the literature showing differences in emotional reactivity between L1 and L2, we hypothesize that L1 feedback will elicit more affective responses. Perceptions of whether feedback was human- or AI- generated are expected to further influence trust, engagement, and willingness to act. These insights contribute to European and international discussions on AI-mediated feedback and multilingualism. It demonstrates how distributed agency, emotions, and language shape students’ knowing and acting on feedback, with implications for theory and design. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This exploratory study employs a fully between-subjects experimental design grounded in sociocultural theory to explore how university students perceive written feedback depending on its source (human vs. AI) and language (L1 vs. L2). The design is grounded in sociocultural theory and Vygotsky’s (1978) notion of the zone of proximal development, viewing feedback as a mediational tool that supports students’ cognitive and emotional engagement with writing tasks. Specifically, we will investigate the effect of language (L1 vs. L2) and feedback source (human vs. AI) on affective measures such as emotionality, engagement, trustworthiness and perceived competence. Participants are university students, with Swedish as L1 and English as L2 learned later in life through schooling, daily use, or both. A two-tiered sampling approach is used: eligibility is verified through instructions, and background variables are collected after exposure to feedback samples to avoid priming effects. Participants who do not meet the criteria are excluded from analysis. The experimental procedure consists of three stages. First, the participants are randomly assigned to one of four experimental groups defined by a 2 × 2 factorial design: feedback source (human vs. AI) and feedback language (L1 Swedish vs. L2 English). Within each group, participants read a number of formative feedback samples that are consistent in both source and language. This approach increases reliability by allowing multiple observations per participant while minimizing carry-over effects related to source or language contrast. Second, participants respond to Likert-scale statements assessing their affective reactions, engagement, and perceptions of trustworthiness related to the feedback. Such statements include: “This feedback made me feel proud of my work”, “This feedback inspired me to reflect on my writing”, and “This feedback feels fair”. Third, participants complete background questions concerning age, gender, language acquisition history, self-reported language proficiency, frequency of language use, and dominant language(s). Prior to the experiment, a validation test was conducted to ensure the Swedish translations of the feedback samples were natural and authentic. Six formative feedback samples were evaluated by Swedish-speaking colleagues. Participants rated each sample’s tone (positive, neutral, negative), and the naturalness and authenticity of the Swedish language. Aggregated results from this validation informed the selection and refinement of the final feedback samples used in this study. The data from the experiment will be analysed using two-way between-subject’s ANOVA with the factor’s language (L1 vs. L2) and feedback source (human vs. AI), and the dependent variables emotionality, engagement, trustworthiness, and perceived competence. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings As AI becomes increasingly embedded in educational practices, feedback is no longer solely a human-to-human interaction but a mediated form of communication whose source and language may not always be transparent or neutral. By focusing on affective and trust-related dimensions, the study highlights that feedback is not only cognitive input but also an emotionally charged experience. Reactions such as anxiety, confidence, pride, or demotivation influence whether students engage with feedback or disengage from it altogether. Based on previous research, we expect feedback written in participants’ second language (L2, English) to elicit higher reported cognitive and emotional load, including greater anxiety and uncertainty, compared to feedback in their first language (L1, Swedish) (Barett, 2017; Dylman & Bjärtå, 2019; Sianipar et al., 2015). Similarly, consistent with findings on trust in AI-mediated educational tools, we hypothesize that feedback perceived as AI-generated will be rated less trustworthy and may lead to lower willingness to act on the suggestions, compared to feedback believed to be written by a human teacher (Hattie & Timperly, 2017; Kralova et al., 2025). Interaction effects between source and language are also expected, such that L2 feedback attributed to AI may produce the highest cognitive and emotional load. Methodologically, this study underscores the importance of linguistically and emotionally validating feedback prior to experimental use, particularly in multilingual and AI-mediated contexts. Conceptually, it moves beyond simplistic “human vs. AI” debates, highlighting how students’ knowing and acting are shaped by distributed agency, emotional resonance, and linguistic realities. Overall, these outcomes aim to provide specific insights into how feedback source and language interact to shape emotional responses, trust, and engagement in higher education. Such findings can inform instructional design, helping educators create feedback that is both cognitively effective and emotionally supportive across multilingual and AI-mediated contexts. Paper Language Skills, School Context, and Critical Thinking in Portuguese Upper Secondary Education: A Sociological Analysis of Public School Data 1: Universidade Lusófona, Portugal; 2: Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal Presenting Author:Critical thinking has been widely recognised as a key competence for the twenty-first century, occupying a central position in contemporary debates on the quality, equity and social relevance of education. International organisations and educational research have consistently emphasised its importance for academic achievement, informed decision-making, social participation and employability. Despite this broad consensus, empirical evidence indicates that students’ levels of critical thinking remain generally limited, including in upper secondary education (Halpern, 2014; OECD, 2018). This paper is developed within the framework of the LINKING project, which adopts an interdisciplinary approach combining education and cognitive neuroscience to investigate the relationship between language competencies and critical thinking. The present contribution focuses specifically on the analysis of questionnaire data collected from students attending public upper secondary schools. Its main objective is to examine how mother tongue competences, school practices and educational contexts are associated with the development of critical thinking, from a sociologically informed perspective. The theoretical framework integrates contributions from the sociology of education with perspectives from cognitive psychology and language sciences. Since Vygotsky’s foundational work, the relationship between language and thought has been conceptualized as a socially mediated process, in which language operates as a central cultural and cognitive tool shaping higher-order thinking (Vygotsky, 1962). More recent research has explored this relationship mainly in second language learning contexts, particularly in higher education, highlighting the role of language proficiency in students’ performance on critical thinking tasks. Importantly, these studies have questioned culturalist explanations opposing “Western” and “Asian” learners, suggesting instead that linguistic constraints may function as structural barriers to the expression and development of critical thinking (Lun et al., 2010; Paton, 2005). In contrast, research addressing mother tongue contexts in secondary education remains comparatively scarce. Existing studies tend to focus on measuring critical thinking levels, identifying correlations with variables such as academic achievement or motivation, or assessing the impact of specific pedagogical interventions. Considerably less attention has been paid to the articulation between writing practices, everyday school experiences and students’ dispositions towards critical thinking, particularly from a sociological perspective that takes institutional arrangements, curricular orientations and educational inequalities into account (Arum & Roksa, 2011). This paper presents preliminary findings from the analysis of questionnaire data collected from a sample of 59 students attending public schools in the Lisbon metropolitan area. The questionnaire gathered information on students’ sociodemographic characteristics, school trajectories, reading and writing practices, perceptions of mother tongue teaching, attitudes towards cognitively demanding tasks, and self-assessed critical thinking competences. The analysis explores patterns of association between these dimensions, aiming to identify both individual and contextual factors that shape the development of critical thinking within school settings. The findings are discussed in relation to Portuguese educational policies and curricular guidelines for upper secondary education, highlighting the role of the mother tongue as a privileged curricular space for the development of higher-order cognitive skills. By combining empirical evidence with an interdisciplinary and sociologically grounded approach, this paper contributes to European debates on key competences and underscores the importance of context-sensitive strategies for fostering critical thinking in secondary education. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The study adopts a quantitative methodological design, embedded within a broader mixed-methods research framework developed as part of the LINKING project. While the overall project integrates educational, cognitive and neuroscientific data, the present paper focuses exclusively on the questionnaire component, enabling a sociologically informed analysis of the relationships between language competences and critical thinking in upper secondary school contexts. The sample consists of 59 students enrolled in public upper secondary schools in the Lisbon metropolitan area. Participant selection followed the criteria of school diversity and representation across grade levels in upper secondary education to capture a range of educational trajectories and school experiences. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire organized into five thematic sections: (i) sociodemographic and educational characteristics; (ii) reading and writing practices in school and out-of-school contexts; (iii) perceptions of mother tongue teaching and associated pedagogical practices; (iv) attitudes towards cognitively demanding tasks; and (v) self-assessed competences related to critical thinking, including analysis, argumentation, problem-solving and decision-making (Halpern, 2014; Reid & Chin, 2021). Data analysis involves descriptive and inferential statistical procedures. In a first stage, the sample was characterised and the distribution of key variables examined. In a second stage, associations between self-reported language competences, writing practices and indicators of critical thinking were explored using correlational analyses and multivariate models. These analytical procedures enable the identification of patterns linking individual characteristics and school-related factors while controlling for sociodemographic variables. The analysis is guided by a conceptual framework grounded in the sociology of education, emphasising the role of institutional conditions, pedagogical practices and social background inequalities in shaping students’ opportunities to develop critical thinking (Arum & Roksa, 2011; Bourdieu & Passeron, 1977). This framework enables an interpretation of the findings that moves beyond an individualistic understanding of competence development, situating cognitive outcomes within broader social and educational structures. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The findings reinforce the central role of mother tongue competences in the development of critical thinking in upper secondary education, highlighting the importance of writing practices and school experiences associated with language learning. The analysis of questionnaire data suggests that critical thinking should not be understood solely as an individual cognitive attribute, but rather as a competence shaped by specific pedagogical, curricular and social contexts. From a sociological perspective, the results point to the relevance of institutional arrangements and everyday school practices in creating differentiated opportunities for the development of higher-order thinking. The paper, therefore, emphasises the need for educational policies and school practices that recognise the mother tongue curriculum as a privileged space for fostering critical thinking, contributing to a more equitable and socially meaningful education. Objective: The primary objective of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and the process writing approach in enhancing the writing skills of High School EFL students. This study aims to determine whether these methods can significantly improve students' writing proficiency, thereby preparing them for higher academic and professional demands. Theoretical Framework: This research is grounded in the theoretical frameworks of constructivism and socio-cognitive theory. Constructivism posits that learners construct knowledge through experiences and reflections, making the learning process active and dynamic (McLeod, 2024). The socio-cognitive theory emphasizes the role of social interactions and cognitive processes in learning (Nickerson, 2024). By integrating AI tools and the process writing approach, this study aims to create an interactive and reflective learning environment that fosters students' writing development. The integration of AI tools in education is also gaining momentum globally. European educational institutions are at the forefront of incorporating AI to enhance teaching and learning experiences. AI tools are being used to provide personalized feedback, support language learning, and develop digital competencies (European School Education Platform, 2024). This aligns with the constructivist and socio-cognitive frameworks by creating interactive and reflective learning environments that cater to individual student needs. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Methodology: This study used a mixed-methods approach to examine the impact of AI tools and the process writing approach on students' writing proficiency. Seventy high school EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students from diverse backgrounds participated over one academic year. The students were divided into an experimental group, which used AI tools and process writing, and a control group, which followed traditional writing instruction. This design allowed for a comparison of the two instructional methods. Data Collection: Quantitative data were gathered through pre-tests and post-tests to measure changes in students' writing proficiency, including grammar, coherence, and overall quality. This provided measurable evidence of the effects of the interventions. In addition, qualitative data were collected through student interviews, focus groups, and classroom observations to gain insights into their experiences with the AI tools and process writing approach. These methods allowed students to express their perceptions of the writing process and tools, while observations captured how they engaged with the interventions in real-time. Throughout the academic year, students completed eight writing assignments. These papers served as additional data points for assessing writing progress and comparing the development of students in the experimental and control groups. The prompts for these assignments were developed based on the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) exam papers to ensure they were aligned with standardized writing assessment criteria. This allowed for a consistent and reliable assessment of writing proficiency across all students, based on internationally recognized standards. Data Analysis: Quantitative data from the pre- and post-tests were analyzed using statistical methods such as t-tests or ANOVA to identify any significant differences between the groups. This helped assess the effectiveness of the AI tools and process writing approach. Qualitative data from interviews, focus groups, and observations were analyzed thematically, identifying patterns in students’ experiences and attitudes towards the interventions. By combining both quantitative and qualitative data, this study provided a comprehensive understanding of how AI tools and the process writing approach impacted writing development in high school students. The results offered valuable insights for educators looking to improve writing instruction through innovative methods. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Expected Outcomes By integrating AI tools and the process writing approach, the study demonstrated that students showed significant improvements in their writing proficiency. The research provided evidence that these methods successfully bridged the gap between students' existing writing skills and the high standards required by European and international benchmarks. Ultimately, the findings confirmed that students’ academic performance was enhanced and that they were better prepared for subsequent academic and professional challenges. Conclusion This research contributed valuable insights into the effectiveness of innovative teaching methods in improving writing skills. By aligning educational practices with European standards and leveraging advanced technologies, NIS delivered a world-class education that equipped students with the skills they needed to succeed in a globalized world.
