Paper Search Strategies Between Trust, Doubt and Heuristics: Young People Dealing with Information (Disorder) in Situated Think-aloud Settings KPH Vienna/Lower Austria, Austria Presenting Author:Conducting online searches requires continuous decision-making. The decision-making process regarding the selection of information sources, the choice of search terms, the refinement of search queries, the pursuit of further information and the termination of search processes, rests with the searcher. Furthermore, decisions must be made at a meta-level, for example with regard to the intensity of the approach, the content verification deemed necessary and the appropriate effort. These decisions are not made in isolation, but are also embedded in external, often uncontrollable, framework conditions. These framework conditions include, for example, the technical conditions of digital systems, time constraints, social expectations and economic resources. For young people these decision-making requirements arise under special conditions. They have limited experience in dealing with complex information situations and operate in digital information spaces that are increasingly characterised by contradictory content, uncertainty and deliberate manipulation. In particular, the emergence of different types of information disorder – such as mis-, dis- and malinformation – which differ in terms of accuracy and intent to deceive (Baines & Elliott, 2020; Wardle & Derakhshan, 2017), as well as new information technology approaches such as artificial intelligence are increasing the demands on search, orientation and decision-making processes in online search. Research on online search strategies shows that young people's search processes are rarely linear, but are characterised by heuristic shortcuts, situational adaptations and recurring patterns of behaviour (Materna & Brüggen, 2024). At the same time, the current systematic literature review by Chakrabarti et al. (2025) indicates that there has been limited empirical research to date on how children and young people deal with mis-, dis- and malinformation, particularly with regard to search and decision-making processes, differentiation by age group and beyond a narrow focus on ‘fake news’. This article addresses this research gap by focusing on search strategies as a central form of information-related behaviour. Search strategies are defined as deliberate, goal-oriented approaches to processing information-related tasks at the cognitive level, which include analytical, evaluative and decision-related processes (Barzilai & Zohar, 2012; Brand-Gruwel et al., 2005; Kurt & Emiroğlu, 2018). These are not conceptualised as completely pre-planned courses of action, but rather as processually realised contexts of action that unfold, change or stabilise in the course of online research under real conditions and are located in the context of media and information literacy. UNESCO symbolically understands media and information literacy (MIL) as an ecological roof under which a very diverse network of competencies in dealing with information and media content interacts, enabling individuals to participate sustainably in society at the individual, institutional and social levels (Grizzle et al., 2021; UNESCO, 2013). Empirically, the research looks into the search strategies of secondary school students (eight-grade) in topic-specific online research on climate change and health in Austria. The focus is on how these search strategies unfold throughout the information process when young people are confronted with information and different types of information disorder and which similarities and differences become apparent in the process. These search strategies are analytically reconstructed based on the decisions that students make in the course of their online research, such as selecting, discarding or pursuing information. Decisions are not considered as an independent focus of analysis, but as an empirical approach through which search strategies become visible and comparable in the process. The article's empirical findings contribute to our understanding of media and information literacy as a processual, action-oriented practice. It explores how young people manage uncertainty and information disorder in socio-technical contexts. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The study employs a qualitative research design to explore young people's search strategies as forms of information-related behaviour in the context of online research. The data is based on 32 think-aloud protocols from eight-grade students in Austria, drawn from middle schools and grammar schools in three federal states. The think-aloud method was used for data collection. This facilitates the mapping of the internal structure of cognitive processes during information search, enabling the understanding of dynamics such as the change of hypotheses, moments of uncertainty and the increasing automation of action sequences. This is achieved by identifying which pieces of information are used to inform decision-making and strategy formation (Ericsson & Simon, 1980). The survey comprised five topic-specific online search tasks based on statements representing information and different types of information disorder (mis-, dis- and malinformation). The task was to evaluate the statements for accuracy and any potential intent to deceive as part of an online search. The students carried out the research on the internet in the presence of the researcher and discussed their thoughts, assessments and decisions throughout the search process of the five research tasks. Prior to each task, the students conducted an initial assessment of accuracy and potential for deception, informed by their existing knowledge. After completing the research, they repeated the assessment of the statements in terms of accuracy and intent to deceive. All think-aloud sessions were audio and video recorded, transcribed and pseudonymised. Data analysis followed qualitative content analysis according to Kuckartz and Rädiker (2022). This method enables the systematic combination of deductive and inductive category formation, making it suitable for the structured analysis of complex, procedural action processes. The main deductive categories were derived from UNESCO's Media and Information Literacy Framework (Grizzle et al., 2021) and Balceris' (2011) action model of information literacy for students, which includes the phases of the information process. Within this framework, inductively subcategories are being developed to capture specific manifestations of search strategies. From an analytical perspective, the focus is on the decisions that students make during their online research, such as selecting, rejecting or pursuing sources of information and digital content, dealing with contradictory information or abandoning search processes. Decisions are not made in isolation. They are understood as empirical elements that can be used to reconstruct search strategies. Coding is carried out iteratively, accompanied by memos and ongoing intercoder review of the category system. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The study examines similarities and differences in young people’s search strategies when dealing with information as well as mis-, dis-, and malinformation, assuming that online search behavior is shaped by situational requirements and the structural conditions of digital information environments. The latest results indicate a high degree of stability in search strategies across different information conditions, understood as the relative consistency of the search strategies used despite varying information conditions. This stability suggests that eight-grade students base their search strategies less on the formal quality or intended deception of individual content and more on the requirements of uncertain, technically and structurally pre-designed information environments and established, experience-based search routines. Decisions made during the search process act as regulatory elements that provide orientation, reduce uncertainty and support coping with situational requirements. This interpretation aligns with conceptualisations of information disorder as a 'socio-material phenomenon' (Ricard et al., 2025) that pre-structures search and decision-making processes at the level of perception. Ricard et al. (2025) demonstrate that manipulative content deliberately mimics the visual, linguistic and structural characteristics of reputable information sources, thereby making it structurally difficult to differentiate between information and information disorder. In such information environments the stability of search strategies can be interpreted less as an expression of a lack of competence and more as a contextually understandable form of action. The article extends existing research by reconstructing search strategies as situational actions within complex socio-technical information spaces. Media and information literacy thus appears less as the ability to correctly classify individual pieces of content and more as the capacity to regulate search strategies under conditions of uncertainty and structural conditioning. This points the need for further research on how search strategies emerge, stabilise or change, and how educational initiatives can support young individuals in critically reflecting on their own search practices. Paper ***WITHDRAWN*** Beyond Bans: Reconciling Youth Communication Cultures, Children’s Rights, and Media Education University of Mainz, Germany Presenting Author:Current calls for smartphone bans in schools and age restrictions on social media signal a broader societal uncertainty about how to deal with digital communication in educational contexts. International policy monitoring shows that restrictions are expanding across education systems, yet their enforcement and effects are inconsistent (UNESCO, 2025; OECD, 2024). While some countries, such as Australia, already have age restrictions for social media and similar developments are emerging in others, such as France, lively political debates are taking place across Europe. These political debates often foreground academic performance, safety, and health, while pedagogical perspectives are rarely taken into account. However, empirical evidence indicates that restricting smartphone use in schools alone does not reduce overall use or reliably improve wellbeing outcomes, pointing to the limitations of approaches based solely on bans (Goodyear et al., 2025). Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Methodologically, the article is based on a systematic triangulation of perspectives and theories (Denzin, 1978; Flick, 1992), in which the phenomenon of smartphone bans in schools is examined from several disciplinary perspectives in educational sciences. For this, we consider the following three perspectives: (1) Youth research perspective: Adolescents’ everyday communication is structured by norms of immediacy, visibility and peer dynamics that do not disappear through bans but relocate to other spaces (boyd, 2014; Ito et al., 2009). How can educational settings engage these logics pedagogically, without normalising permanent availability? (2) Children’s rights perspective: Prohibition debates frequently prioritise risk while overlooking children’s rights to information, protection and participation. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the CRC’s General Comment No. 25 clarify that children’s rights must be respected, protected and fulfilled in digital environments, creating institutional responsibilities beyond “either/or” framings (OHCHR, 1989; UN CRC, 2021). (3) Media-education perspective: Educational institutions should create shared orientations that strengthen participation and digital agency. At the same time, the role of commercial platforms and providers must be questioned more critically, as technologies ultimately shape (educational) communication and everyday life in schools in subtle yet significant ways (Macgilchrist, 2017). Digital communication should therefore be treated as a dimension of quality development and teacher education, aligned with democratic digital citizenship frameworks (Council of Europe, 2020). These perspectives are not treated additively, but are systematically linked through an integrative conceptual synthesis that follows a comparative interpretative logic. This approach makes it possible to identify convergences, tensions, and blind spots between epistemic and normative frameworks, thereby developing a reflexive, relational understanding of the topic. On this basis, the contribution develops an integrative conceptual synthesis that does not aim at theoretical unification or consensus, but at articulating the relational structure of competing and complementary interpretations. This synthesis aims to illustrate how different forms of knowledge, capacity to act, and responsibility are attributed and problematized in different ways in current education- and policy-oriented discourses on the regulation of smartphones. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Based on exemplary empirical references and policy materials primarily from Germany, complemented by selected cases from Eastern European education systems, the analysis identifies recurring patterns in how smartphone bans are framed at the intersection of youth agency, children’s rights and media education. Initial findings point to a structural tension between arguments for protection and participation. Smartphone bans tend to be justified with arguments such as risk, distraction, and protection, while perspectives that emphasize children's rights, youth participation, and media education goals are less institutionalized in formal regulatory frameworks. By situating these findings within a broader European context of digital transformation and educational governance, the contribution offers a reflexive framework for understanding smartphone bans as a multidimensional educational issue located at the intersection of pedagogical practice, institutional regulations, and socio-technical change. On this basis, the contribution addresses the potential for comparative learning across European education systems and explicitly invites discussion with colleagues from other national contexts at ECER 2026 as a space for critically reflecting on shared challenges, responsibility and divergent trajectories of digital regulation in education. Paper Opostum: A Safe and Secure Environment to Discuss Social Media and Picture Sharing in Classrooms Zurich University of Teacher Education (PH Zürich), Switzerland Presenting Author:‘Learning with media’ and ‘learning about media’ as core activities of Media Education is part of many school curricula throughout Europe. This contribution will present a research & development project that enables teachers and pupils to learn about and discuss social media. With a focus on ‘learning about media’, pupils can share visual material in safe environments such as classrooms. Research on young people’s use of social media has shown that sharing visual material is common and popular. This relates to recent theoretical developments on “conceptually linking visual competencies and digital sovereignty” in the course of young people’s socialisation process (c.f. Kramer et al., 2022) and even in processes of self-optimisation (c.f. Flasche & Carnap, 2021). These practices of sharing visual material include e.g. biographical photography-related memory (c.f. Kramer, 2020), politically motivated material (e.g. Klawitter, 2025; Kramer et al., 2025; Bellinger et al., 2025), even very intimate material (c.f. Kramer et al., 2022), etc. In relation to school, it was found that “checking” social media, a highly entangled practice of perceiving and producing representations (i.e., social media posts), primarily on the three platforms #WhatsApp, #SnapChat, and #Insta (i.e., Instagram), is involved in the practice of doing homework (Rummler et al., 2019, 2020). Promoting the competence of ‘digital sovereignty’ in school means ‘learning about media’. Teachers and youth workers therefore play an important role in exploring, and practising the use of social media with young people. Teachers and supervisors face the challenge that commercial platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and similar services cannot be used to design learning scenarios because data protection, the protection of minors, and protection from disinformation, hate speech, or bullying cannot be guaranteed for school use. At the same time, these are the aspects that need to be addressed in lessons in a secure and reflective way. The lack of protection often prevents exploratory engagement with a highly relevant topic in which reflected experiences are substantial (Boyer et al., 2025). For the active exploration of social media topics, the open-source project opostum (www.opostum.ch; https://github.com/opostum/opostum) has been developed at the Zurich University of Teacher Education since January 2024. On this secure and protected platform, pupils can experience social media in a safe environment. Teachers and supervisors have complete control over the data generated by the application. Teachers, administrators or facilitators, via a dedicated dashboard, can decide who is accepted into the network, and even larger networks, such as the entire school. Flexible user management allows for the use in extracurricular youth work. opostum provides teachers with various support tools that allow them to control the options for interaction, as well as identify undesirable behaviour, and respond appropriately, or irrevocably delete posts (right to be forgotten). In addition, opostum can be used to address other relevant topics such as personalised advertising, user tracking, or recommendation algorithms, etc. Young people can design their own advertising campaign and display them to specifically selected users. This allows the topic of advertising to be covered comprehensively. An accompanying wiki (wiki.opostum.ch) currently contains four scenarios on topics that are increasingly prominent in public discourses on social media (fake news, influencer marketing, self-presentation and privacy, personalised advertising). These scenarios have been developed for classroom use. In addition, there is one scenario for extracurricular work (a simulation game in leadership training simulation game) and one during an activity week. A handout for teachers, worksheets and import files for artificial profiles are provided. These artificial profiles allow a hub to be ‘filled’ with content and can be used to lay the foundation for introducing a topic. Pupils can then respond to these posts and create their own. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used In the opostum project, design thinking principles and approaches were applied to support the user-centred design of the prototype from an early stage of software development, with a strong focus on the teacher dashboard (c.f. Parizi et al., 2022). The teacher dashboard was developed in a participatory, user-oriented manner in several iteration cycles. The process was based on semi-structured interviews, focus groups with teachers, and the analysis of transcribed statements using a deductively and inductively developed category system (Schmalfeldt et al., 2025). As part of the computer science days at the Zurich University of Teacher Education, we introduced the platform, presented teaching scenarios, tested these with teachers and students, and engaged in direct dialogue to gather feedback and optimise potential uses (Hess & Boyer, 2025a). In addition, the prototypes were validated through expert tests and workshops with teachers (Hess & Boyer, 2025b). Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings During the design thinking process, and based on interviews and workshops, teachers reported that the alert functionality in opostum’s dashboard drew their attention to students who would usually work quietly and are reluctant to ask for help when they encounter difficulties. It was also found that these students perceived the teacher’s support as helpful, even though they had not explicitly requested assistance. Teachers with access to a dashboard provide feedback more frequently than those without one. It can therefore be assumed that dashboards with an advisory function should be preferred over those with a mirroring or alerting function, as they give teachers a better understanding of students’ difficulties. Teachers reject dashboards that assume full control of the classroom. The European perspective: opostum is currently available in German and English. The accompanying wiki is available in German. While ‘learning about media’ is part of school curricula in many European countries, there is ongoing debate about how to address issues of social media use in the classroom. In addition, different age groups ranging, from primary to secondary school education, or even further education, need to be approached differently. With this presentation the authors aim to engage in discussions on diverse views and perspectives from different European regions. During the presentation and throughout the session, a live, hands-on demonstration of a locally installed opostum hub will serve to stimulate the discussion. Beyond questions of demands for software like opostum and the European perspective, additional issues can be addressed: although opostum was designed with teachers, there is still limited knowledge about pupils’ views. This highlights the need for further research and development of both, software and related teaching materials for schools.
