Paper Design Educators as Change Agents: Sensemaking of Systemic Change Through Transition Design in Higher Education Lapland university, Finland Presenting Author:Design education in higher education institutions (HEI) is evolving in response to social, economic, political, and ecological change. This shift reflects a new educational paradigm that requires an understanding of the complexity and ambiguity of contemporary work life brought about by systemic change (Mavri, Ioannou and Loizides 2020; Redström 2020; Pontis and van der Waarde 2020). Within design education, systemic change requires rethinking both what is taught and how education anticipates and responds to evolving societal, economic, political, ecological, and professional contexts. Traditionally, design education has prioritized technical skills, proficiency in tools and software, and a strong understanding of visual aesthetics and design principles (Conway, Masters and Thorold 2017; Davis and Dubberly 2023; Formosa 2025). However, the emergence of a post-digital world, the integration of advanced artificial intelligence tools, and the growing prevalence of complex, wicked problems have fundamentally reshaped professional design practice and employment (Silver and Ruokamo 2025). Design problems and their potential solutions are increasingly ill-defined, and designers’ roles vary significantly across projects and contexts (Dubberly 2017). As Lee (2024: 170) notes, the object of design has shifted “beyond product,” focusing more on activating and supporting individual and collective action than on production. In the context of systemic change, designers are therefore required to engage with challenges that span multiple industries and societal domains. Design educators are under increasing pressure to integrate multidisciplinary content, address systemic challenges, and equip students with ethical and anticipatory thinking skills (Wang, Wu and Gutierrez 2024; Cesinger and Dittenberger 2025; Lee 2024). According to Pontis and van der Waarde (2020: 241), design education is shifting away from standardized teaching models toward more personalized approaches, in which students become “the authors, drivers, and assessors of their learning experience,” while educators adopt supervisory roles. At the same time, educators are expected to maintain core disciplinary competencies while responding to new demands such as systems thinking, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and inclusivity. This expanded role is also articulated in Irwin’s (2015) concept of transition design, which emphasizes designing with an understanding of the interconnectedness of social, economic, political, and ecological systems. In response to systemic change, several scholars have called for a rethinking of how design is taught in higher education (Pontis and van der Waarde 2020; Formosa 2025; Ornekoğlu-Selçuk et al. 2024; Wang, Wu and Gutierrez 2024). Rather than focusing narrowly on tools or aesthetics, future-oriented design education is increasingly expected to emphasize a deeper understanding of the design process, problem framing, and research integration (Lee 2024; Kunrath et al. 2020; Daae and Cash 2021). While previous research has examined changes in the design field (Noel et al. 2023; Mortati 2022; Zhou et al. 2025; Silver and Ruokamo 2025; Davis and Dubberly 2023), less attention has been paid to how design educators themselves interpret and respond to these transformations. Yet educators play a critical role in shaping the future of the profession, and their lived experiences and meaning-making processes remain underexplored. To address this gap, this study draws on the concept of sensemaking. Originally developed by Weick (1995) in organizational studies, sensemaking refers to the ongoing process through which individuals interpret complex and ambiguous situations and act upon those interpretations. In higher education, this perspective highlights how educators draw on professional values, experiences, and social interactions to navigate uncertainty and reframe their roles in changing contexts. The study addresses the following research questions: Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study adopts a phenomenological-hermeneutic research approach (Gadamer 2004; Laverty 2003; van Manen 2016) to explore how design educators experience and make sense of social, economic, political, and ecological change within their professional roles. The methodological starting point is phenomenological, focusing on educators’ lived experiences of change as they are described and articulated in relation to their everyday teaching practices. The hermeneutic dimension provides an interpretative framework, recognising that understanding is always situated and mediated through interpretation. Together, this approach enables both a descriptive engagement with educators’ experiences and an interpretative analysis of how meaning is constructed within their professional contexts. The research process was guided by the principle of epoché, understood as a conscious bracketing of the researcher’s prior assumptions and theoretical expectations in order to foreground participants’ own interpretations of change (Husserl 1970). Rather than applying pre-established analytical categories at the outset, the analysis attends closely to how systemic change is experienced, felt, and rendered meaningful within educators’ professional life worlds. The suitability of phenomenological approaches for educational research has been demonstrated in previous studies examining learning experiences, pedagogical agency, and individual encounters with change (Padilla-Díaz 2015; Creely 2016; Kumasaka 2025). Central to this perspective is the concept of intentionality, referring to the idea that experience is always directed toward something. In this study, attention is given to how educators orient their awareness toward shifting values, expectations, and systemic tensions in design education. Empirical data were generated through semi-structured interviews with design educators working in higher education institutions. The participants represent diverse disciplinary backgrounds within design education and are engaged in teaching in contexts shaped by ongoing transformation. The interviews focused on educators’ perceptions of change in the design field, their pedagogical responses to increasing complexity and uncertainty, and their evolving professional roles. Semi-structured interviews allowed participants to articulate their experiences in their own terms while providing sufficient structure to address the research questions. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Based on an initial analysis of ten semi-structured interviews with design educators from HEIs, this study is expected to generate several interrelated insights into how educators make sense of change in design education. First, the findings suggest that design educators demonstrate a high level of awareness of ongoing and anticipated changes, including technological development, shifts in student needs, and structural transformations within higher education. However, this awareness is not uniform. Instead, educators’ interpretations of “the future” are fragmented and situated, shaped primarily by their everyday teaching experiences, professional identities, and institutional contexts rather than by abstract future narratives or policy discourses. Second, preliminary analysis indicates that educators’ acceptance of change depends on context and perceived agency, rather than reflecting a simple stance of resistance or openness. Educators tend to embrace change when they experience pedagogical agency and the ability to integrate new demands into their own professional values and practices. In contrast, changes perceived as externally imposed—such as funding-driven curriculum reforms or massification—are met with critical distance or ambivalence. Acceptance thus appears closely linked to perceived agency rather than openness to innovation per se. Third, the data suggest that educators’ sensemaking processes are relational and identity-driven. Changes are interpreted through responsibilities toward students, conceptions of good teaching, and concerns about professional integrity. Student vulnerability and uncertainty emerge as particularly powerful triggers for educators’ reflection and adaptation. Finally, while themes such as sustainability and artificial intelligence are present, they do not function as dominant sensemaking frameworks. Instead, the study points to resilience, adaptability, and professional meaning-making as central underlying dimensions shaping educators’ responses to change. Together, these expected outcomes contribute to research on sensemaking, teacher agency, and future-oriented change in higher education, offering a nuanced understanding of how design educators navigate complexity and uncertainty in their professional roles. Paper Fostering Exploratory Talk in University Teaching: An Analysis of Teacher-Student Interactional Dialogue University of Helsinki, Finland Presenting Author:My doctoral thesis will research from the perspective of the university teacher, the nature and occurrence of interactional, dialogic discourse in face-to-face teaching, and the factors that support its emergence. Specifically, it examines how university teachers’ verbal practices and interactional strategies foster exploratory talk, conceptualized as a shared, dialogic mode of thinking that models disciplinary reasoning and processes of knowledge construction for students. Research material data comprises teaching and interview material collected from four Finnish university teachers (two men and two women) representing two faculties, who provided lecture-based instruction during the academic years 2023-2024. All courses were meant for bachelor-level students. Basically I videorecorded at the very beginning of the course, around at the mid-point, and then at the end of the course – this was the minimum – in order to be able to see the development in relations between the teacher and the students, but also among students themselves. A total of 19 lecture sessions were video-recorded and subsequently transcribed for analysis. The data of lectures includes 24 hours, 59 minutes, and 49 seconds of videorecorded material, amounting to 1,142,310 characters, 156,444 words, and the equivalent of 279 A4 pages. In addition, each instructor participated in two semi-structured interviews, conducted before and after the lecture course. The audio-recorded interview corpus consists of 8 interview sessions, totaling 5 hours, 16 minutes, and 11 seconds of audio material, corresponding to 258,144 characters, 39,731 words, and 66 A4 pages of transcribed text. Altogether, the full data contains 30 hours and 16 minutes of recorded material, comprising 1,400,454 characters, 196,175 words, and 345 A4 pages. The starting point for my study has been what is frequently referred to as sociocultural theory, according to which language is a way of thinking that is both individual and collective. The analysis is based on Vygotsky’s sociocultural (or, cultural-historical; Vygotsky, 1978) thinking, in particular on the essential role of the language but also the concepts of the zone of proximal development (ZPD) and scaffolding. The analysis is also guided by Bakhtin’s (1981) notions of dialogism and multivoicedness. The background material for the study consists of previous studies of the impact of interactional dialogical speech used by teachers to foster learning, the development of common knowledge, and student motivation for learning. From the previous studies, Mercer’s (2000) differentiation of cumulative and exploratory talk is used as the theoretical framework as well, complementing aspects from Alexander’s (2008; 2020) dialogic teaching and Wells’s (1999) view of inquiry as collaborative knowledge-building. Mercer (2000) distinguishes three kinds of talk between a teacher and learners, and between learners: disputational talk (heavy disagreement, even disputes), cumulative talk (building solidarity by uncritically adding ideas) and exploratory talk, in which participants critically but constructively engage with ideas, give reasons, and invite justification. Exploratory talk is collaborative and accountable: it advances reasoning through shared warrants and explicit evaluation of claims. Exploratory talk is marked by visible reason-giving, joint evaluation, and co-ownership of conclusions; in the episode, whose analysis I offer as paper, the teacher’s strategies move the interaction along precisely this trajectory in the direction of exploratory talk. This focal episode is a brief university classroom exchange in which a student tentatively articulates distinctions among certain key terms of the lecture and the discipline, and the teacher responds by validating, elaborating, and recontextualizing these distinctions with reference to the debates of the discipline she teaches. The study will bring some new information about the university teacher’s operations in dialogic discourse. There are only few researches on this topic specifically from the perspective of university pedagogy. See, however, Atwood et al. (2010). Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The research method for the analysis is theory-based content analysis, and the phenomenon researched will be studied qualitatively at the level of microanalysis. My methodology could be called abductive, as the research material guides and helps to form the analytical framework. I also lean to some extent on socio-cultural discourse analysis (Mercer), which can be done both qualitatively and quantitatively. There are three important elements in this analysis: language as a mediational tool for shared and collective cognition, grounded in a sociocultural theoretical framework (Vygotsky); a qualitative methodological approach – when needed, with complementary quantitative components – enabling the systematic analysis of interactional and discourse level phenomena. And thirdly, classroom-based spoken interaction occurring in face-to-face instruction, including teacher–student exchanges – when needed, including as well as peer-to-peer student discourse. The units of analysis are chosen in the framework of teacher-student dialogue, which engage the teacher and a student or several students, and is indicated by linguistic signs, e.g. “I think that”, “This was new to me…”, “I had never thought that…”, as part of a longer chain of speakers, or e.g. questions. In case of exploratory talk, on the surface structure of the language there is visible reason-giving, joint evaluation, and co-ownership of conclusions. In addition to Vygotsky, Mercer, Bakhtin, Alexander and Wells, whose thinking is behind the research, there is an article by Sherrie Atwood, William Turnbull, and Jeremy I. M. Carpendale titled “The Construction of Knowledge in Classroom Talk” published in "The Journal of the Learning Sciences" in 2010. In their article those scholars do research on the learning of college students of the first and fourth year. In this connection the article by Antti Rajala, Jaakko Hilppö, Lasse Lipponen, “The emergence of inclusive exploratory talk in primary students’ peer interaction” can be mentioned. It was published in "International Journal of Educational Research" in 2012, their research material is from school context, but they modify Mercer’s three categories of talk in the way that I did in my own Master thesis in 2018. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings There are a few actions in Teacher A’s teaching in the episode to be presented that support the dialogue developing towards exploratory talk. First, she takes up the student’s framing and revoices conceptual distinctions in disciplinary terms. She validates the student’s contribution as an inquiry rather than a right/wrong answer (Alexander, 2008; Mercer, 2000). Second, when she emphasizes multiplicity and contestation, typical for academic critical thinking, Teacher A resists premature closure of the dialogue and keeps the epistemic space open – to the student in question but certainly also to any other who would like to join the dialogue. This is an essential condition for exploratory talk (Bakhtin, 1981; Mercer, 2000). Third, she gives reasons making explicit why and how various terms used in the discipline are justified and/or contested by various scholars (Mercer, 2000; Alexander, 2020). Fourth, in doing this, she introduces the student, with his fellow students, to “scholars” and their thinking, and through that, to community-of-practice norms (Wells, 1999). In the episode, Teacher A’s final comment invites ongoing inquiry beyond the episode, after and outside the classroom event. Thus, the talk (spoken language) becomes a disciplinary apprenticeship, modeling and exposing how scholars decide and give meanings in context (Wells, 1999). From the whole of research material, of which I will present one example, I hypothesise that the activities of university teachers and teaching methods promoting dialogical interaction and activating students’ shared thinking can produce exploratory talk. In exploratory talk, the teacher and students think together via the dialogical features of spoken language. In teaching situations, exploratory talk can generate questioning and reasoning and, as a result, also new insights and knowledge. References Alexander, R. (2008). Paper Traversing Anxiety Through Cross-Cultural Co-Planning: Indigenous-Han Teachers in Urban Taiwan National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan Presenting Author:Indigenous education research has been profoundly shaped by Western imperialism, with dominant research paradigms historically embedded in colonial power relations and Western epistemologies (Smith, 2012). Much of the existing international scholarship has emerged from settler-colonial contexts such as Canada, Australia, the United States, and New Zealand, where distinct settler populations displaced Indigenous peoples in the pursuit of territorial sovereignty. Within these contexts, extensive theoretical and empirical work has examined Indigenous education and cross-cultural teacher collaboration. However, the applicability of these frameworks to societies operating through different colonial mechanisms remains underexamined. Contexts characterized by multiple and layered colonial histories—without a single, coherent settler population—raise distinct questions regarding power, knowledge, and educational authority that cannot be fully addressed through dominant settler-colonial literature alone. Taiwan represents such an undertheorized context. Taiwan is home to sixteen officially recognized Indigenous nations, comprising approximately 2.3% of the national population, alongside Plains Indigenous groups whose official recognition remains contested. These communities have experienced successive colonial regimes, including Dutch, Spanish, Qing, Japanese, and Chinese Nationalist rule. Rather than a single regime replacing another, these historical layers have produced a complex colonial formation in which Indigenous knowledge, identity, and sovereignty have been continually reshaped within processes of nation-building, cultural governance, and education. In Taiwan's urban schools, Indigenous students often constitute less than two percent of the student population. Indigenous knowledge remains institutionally marginalized and is frequently positioned as supplementary cultural content rather than as a foundational epistemological framework (Nesterova, 2019). Recent Indigenous education policies mandate the inclusion of Indigenous languages, histories, and cultures across school curricula; however, these mandates have been implemented without corresponding professional development infrastructure (Nesterova, 2019). Prior research has shown that non-Indigenous teachers in Taiwan often lack sufficient understanding of Indigenous peoples and cultures, leading to stereotypical interpretations and deficit-oriented expectations toward Indigenous students (Yen, 2009). These conditions exemplify broader theoretical challenges in multiply colonized contexts where settler-colonial frameworks, premised on binary Indigenous-settler relations, inadequately capture the complexity of teacher positionality and epistemic authority. In urban contexts where Indigenous students represent an extreme numerical minority, non-Indigenous teachers encounter fundamental epistemic asymmetries when curriculum content requires engagement with Indigenous epistemological frameworks outside their professional training. This study argues that professional anxiety emerging under such conditions should not be understood simply as implementation failure, but signals teachers' growing awareness of the limits of their professional authority and epistemic positioning. Rather than treating professional anxiety as a deficit, this research conceptualizes it as a potentially generative condition for professional learning. Drawing on a two-year collaborative action research project (2023–2024) involving two Han Taiwanese teachers and two Indigenous educators (Kavalan and Paiwan) in an urban elementary school in northern Taiwan, the study examines how sustained cross-cultural teacher co-planning enables teachers to traverse professional anxiety. Building on Donald's (2012) concept of ethical relationality, the collaborative process challenged teachers' conventional positioning as curriculum experts. Through sustained relational engagement, Indigenous knowledge came to be positioned as authoritative in curriculum decisions. This repositioning emerged through teachers' ongoing confrontation with the limits of their Han-centric pedagogical expertise. The study addresses three research questions: (1) How do Han Taiwanese and Indigenous teachers experience and navigate professional anxiety during collaborative Indigenous curriculum development? (2) What pedagogical and relational practices emerge when teachers work across epistemic differences? (3) How does sustained collaboration reshape teachers' understanding of their professional knowledge and its limitations? This study contributes empirical insights to international Indigenous education scholarship by examining teacher collaboration in multiply colonized urban contexts. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study adopts a participatory action research design to examine teachers' professional learning within cross-cultural co-planning practices. Teachers were positioned as co-learners engaged in iterative inquiry under uncertainty and asymmetrical epistemic authority. The research was conducted across two academic years (2023-2024) during early implementation of Taiwan's 2019 Indigenous education policy mandate. Four teachers participated: two Han Taiwanese teachers (including the researcher) and two Indigenous educators (one Kavalan, one Paiwan), all teaching in an urban public school where Indigenous students comprised less than 2% of the population. Eight intensive co-planning workshops (3-5 hours each) were conducted quarterly, generating approximately 32 hours of audio-recorded dialogue. This pacing allowed teachers to pilot curriculum modules and return with implementation reflections. Data sources included: audio-recorded co-planning sessions capturing collective negotiation; semi-structured interviews with each teacher; researcher field notes and reflexive journal systematically documenting experiences of anxiety, epistemic uncertainty, and shifting positionality; and curriculum artifacts. This triangulation enabled examination of professional learning from collective, individual, and auto-ethnographic perspectives. Data analysis followed a reflexive thematic approach, attending to how all four teachers—including the researcher—articulated anxiety, negotiated epistemic boundaries, and repositioned themselves across the two-year trajectory. Workshop recordings, interviews, and field notes were analyzed iteratively, with emerging themes triangulated across sources. Analysis prioritized moments of hesitation, disagreement, and uncertainty as sites where professional learning became visible. Consistent with Indigenous research ethics and OCAP principles (Schnarch, 2004), Indigenous educators retained authority over cultural knowledge and veto authority over interpretation and dissemination. All analytical themes were reviewed collaboratively. The researcher's positionality as Han teacher-participant-researcher was further complicated by Pingpu Plains Indigenous ancestry without corresponding cultural identity or community belonging. This ambiguous positioning—neither fully 'Han' genealogically nor Indigenous in lived experience—embodied the complexities of positionality in multiply colonized contexts that this study theorizes, requiring continuous reflexivity regarding power dynamics and epistemic authority. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Findings reveal that professional anxiety in cross-cultural Indigenous curriculum collaboration operates asymmetrically. Han teachers' anxiety manifested as silence and withdrawal—a privileged retreat from epistemic responsibility. Conversely, Indigenous educators experienced dual agency anxiety: pressure to simultaneously fulfill professional teaching roles while bearing cultural representation labor, intensified by Han colleagues' silence. Cross-cultural collaboration progressed through four transformative stages. Anxiety: Han teachers' silence stemmed from fear of harm, yet paradoxically imposed greater labor on Indigenous colleagues. Conflict: Indigenous educators challenged Han-centric assumptions—confronting deficit framings that positioned urban Indigenous students as "lacking cultural nourishment" or Indigenous practices as "traditional" while Han knowledge remained unmarked. These challenges made visible how seemingly benevolent concern structured epistemic violence. Negotiation: Transformative shift occurred when Han teachers reframed uncertainty from professional failure to relational accountability, articulating "I don't have authority to determine this—how should we approach it?" as epistemic humility that redistributed interpretive authority. Co-construction: Sustained dialogue repositioned Han teachers from seeking cultural mastery to creating conditions where Indigenous knowledge systems held authority. Specific practices emerged: Han teachers developed accountable questioning that explicitly named epistemic limitations; Indigenous educators modeled relational knowledge approaches; collaboratively, teachers created epistemic holding spaces where multiple knowledge systems coexist without Han synthesis, positioning Indigenous educators as knowledge authorities and Han teachers as dialogue facilitators. Sustained collaboration enabled teachers to articulate shifts in understanding professional knowledge. Han teachers identified specific limitations of their pedagogical approaches. Both groups reframed professional competence from mastery toward sustaining dialogue across epistemic difference. Teachers' ongoing engagement beyond mandated sessions indicated emerging sustainability through relational commitment. These findings contribute empirical evidence of Donald's (2012) ethical relationality in multiply colonized urban contexts, revealing how extreme numerical minoritization produces asymmetrical anxiety requiring attention to dual agency burdens and relational sustainability mechanisms. Paper Schools as Learning Organizations: Stakeholders’ perceptions and practices in underserved rural schools of India University of Jyväskylä, Finland Presenting Author:Education is fundamental for individual empowerment, community development, and societal progress. It equips individuals with essential skills and knowledge, while fostering social cohesion and economic resilience. In rural areas, ensuring access to quality education is crucial, as it has the potential to break cycles of poverty and marginalization. Schools play a central role in these communities, not just as places of learning, but as hubs for social interaction and opportunity. From a societal perspective, keeping children in school and supporting their educational success builds a more equitable and sustainable future for all. India provides a relevant and critical context for studying sociological connections in education given the country’s vast diversity and deeply entrenched inequalities (Nambissan & Rao, 2012). Rural schools in India share similarities with those globally, such as remote location, minimal infrastructure and resources, sparse population, and multi-grade teaching (Lamb & Glover, 2014; Wang & Shen, 2022; Kalaoja & Pietarinen, 2009). However, the unique interplay of caste, class and religious stratification, experienced more acutely in rural areas, shapes India’s educational landscape, adding complexity to the difficult teaching and learning circumstances of rural schools (Ganguly & Kadam, 2016; Madan, 2019). Research Questions
Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This qualitative study adopts a participatory approach to explore the mental models, everyday practices, and needs of teachers, students, parents and administrators within rural school communities. Data was collected during Sept-October 2025 for four weeks through participatory observations accompanied by 22 interviews (individual and group interviews) with teachers, students and parents across eight rural schools and the Director of the State Institute of Educational Management and Training. Participatory observation allowed me to build the relationship and trust necessary for minimizing the influence of my presence, as well as dive deep into people’s values, beliefs, and behaviors to understand ongoing organizational practices. Taking a relational constructivist orientation, I kept the interviews largely unstructured (McNamee & Hoskin, 2012), leaving space for participants to tell their story in response to a broad question. Observations and interview data together are being analysed using hybrid thematic analysis that combines a data-driven inductive as well as a deductive a-priori approach. The analysis began with the creation of a code manual derived from relevant literature. The reliability of the manual was tested through analyzing the first two interviews and adjusting the manual as needed. Even though the manual served as the starting point for the analysis, many more data-driven codes emerged during the analysis. The codes are now being organized to find connection and relations between them, and identify relevant themes. The codes themes will eventually be categorized into overarching themes that will serve as the core findings. In a follow-up study, a systematic narrative review will also synthesize literature on rural schools, integrating the findings with empirical data to create an adapted Schools as Learning Organizations (SLO) framework tailored to the unique strengths and needs of rural schools serving low-SES (socio-economic status) student populations. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Preliminary results, through initial emerging themes, highlight a strong and significant role of teacher-driven community initiatives in the development of otherwise unsupported rural schools, and hence call for an appreciative inquiry approach in research and policy planning for rural schools that build on the existing strength, resilience, and active voice of these communities in addition to focusing on their needs and challenges References Bowen, G.
