Paper Improving Human Research Ethics Capacity (IREC policy) at One University in Kazakhstan Astana International University, Kazakhstan Presenting Author:Institutional Research Ethics Committees (IRECs)—known as Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) in the U.S. context—are key governance bodies “responsible for safeguarding the rights, safety, and well-being of the research subjects” (CIOMS, 2002, p. 25). While IRECs or IRBs are well-established structures in many high-income countries, they remain emergent in much of the Global South, including many post-Soviet states. In these contexts, human research ethics policies are either newly introduced or underdeveloped, leaving researchers to rely on personal ethical judgment rather than formalized institutional procedures (Dranseika, 2011; Famenka, 2011; Famenka, 2016; Silverman et al., 2015; Chenneville et al., 2016; Abdulrahman & Nair, 2017; Phoomirat et al., 2022; Fakhradiyev et al., 2024). In many post-socialist contexts, including Central Asia, social science research is often perceived with suspicion—sometimes even as inspection or espionage (Central Eurasian Studies Society, 2016; Berezniova, 2017; Bogachenko, 2017). This perception reflects a broader reality: research culture remains underdeveloped, and conducting studies can be seen as inherently risky for both participants and researchers (Merril & Whitsel, 2017). What is clear is that these contexts urgently need systematic inquiry into ethical dilemmas and the development of research cultures that protect not only participants’ rights but also researchers’ safety and integrity. The roots of this situation lie partly in the Soviet legacy, where social science research was often discouraged for ideological reasons (Connelly, 2014; Kuzhabekova, 2015). This suppression contributed to decades of stagnation in the social sciences and weakened traditions of inquiry in these fields. As a result, social science research ethics has remained peripheral—rarely considered in a structured or systematic way. One of the most visible indicators of this is the absence or underdeveloped institutionalization of human research ethics structures in many higher education institutions across post-socialist countries, including Kazakhstan (Jonbekova, 2020; Ahn & Shegebayev, 2017). This lack of formal mechanisms undermines both the quality and the ethical grounding of research, leaving institutions ill-prepared to protect human subjects and to support responsible research practices. Today, as research increasingly takes place in the context of rapid technological and artificial intelligence development (Oliveira et al., 2024; Zou & Huang, 2023) and the rising requirement to conduct research and publish it, the need to strengthen academic and research ethics—particularly human research ethics—is becoming especially pressing in the context (Ispambetova et al., under review). Universities in the context are expected to uphold international ethical standards, yet many lack the institutional capacity, policies, and expertise to do so (Sagitova et al., 2024). This underscores the urgent need to establish and strengthen institutional mechanisms that can ensure ethical oversight, protect research participants, and support researchers in meeting international ethical standards. The purpose of this action research study is to understand how IREC policy is being implemented at one university in Kazakhstan and to produce practical knowledge and strategies that will improve the IREC’s implementation and operation at the university. The study will be guided by the following research questions:
By addressing these questions, this study aims to contribute to building ethical research capacity that is not only critical for protecting participants but also essential for fostering a robust, innovative, and globally engaged research culture in Kazakhstan.
Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used A Participatory Action Research (PAR) design will be applied for this study. Because the study aims to understand how IREC policy is implemented and to identify ways to strengthen the protection of human subjects in research, PAR offers a systematic means of linking inquiry with action. It supports knowledge generation within a specific institutional context while engaging participants in iterative cycles of reflection, planning, action, and observation (Koshy, 2005). The data gathering process is informed by Zina O’Leary’s action research cycles (as cited in Koshy, 2005). These cycles comprise four interrelated stages: observation (data collection), reflection (critical engagement with findings), planning (development of action strategies), and action (implementation of interventions). In this study, data gathering constitutes the entry point to the cycle and forms the basis for subsequent phases of reflection, planning, and action. The first phase of this action research will examine how the IREC policy is currently implemented at the university using two data sources. Semi-structured interviews with university leadership, IREC members, faculty, and graduate students will explore stakeholders’ experiences with the policy in practice. In parallel, relevant institutional documents (e.g., regulations, bylaws, meeting records, and training materials) will be analyzed to understand how the policy is formally framed and embedded. Together, these data will establish a baseline of current practices, identify gaps between policy and practice, and inform the design of subsequent action cycles. Insights from this phase will guide the planning of targeted actions informed by relevant literature and the researcher’s PhD study on the development of the IREC at Nazarbayev University. This experience offers contextualized insight into the challenges and opportunities of institutionalizing ethics review processes. Building on insights from the initial interviews and document analysis, the next phase will focus on planning and implementing targeted action cycles co-designed with key stakeholders to ensure relevance and feasibility. Potential actions include research ethics and IREC training sessions aligned with international standards, including a dedicated session presenting Nazarbayev University’s decade-long experience with IREC policy. Drawing on the researcher’s PhD study, this session will address implementation challenges, strategies used to address them, and perceived benefits. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This participatory action research study is expected to generate both practical and scholarly outcomes that contribute to strengthening the implementation and sustainability of IREC policy at the case university. First, the study will produce a contextualized understanding of how IREC policy is currently interpreted, enacted, and experienced by key stakeholders, highlighting misalignments between formal policy and everyday practice. This evidence-based baseline will clarify institutional strengths, gaps, and capacity needs related to human research ethics oversight. Second, through co-designed action cycles, the study is expected to enhance stakeholders’ knowledge and awareness of research ethics principles, international IREC standards, and procedural expectations. Training activities and reflective engagement are anticipated to build practical competencies among faculty, students, and IREC members, supporting more consistent and timely ethics review processes. Third, the study is likely to generate concrete institutional resources, such as revised or supplementary guidelines, clearer procedural documentation, and improved communication mechanisms among stakeholders. These outputs will provide practical tools to support routine IREC operations and reduce reliance on informal or ad hoc practices. Finally, at a broader level, the study will contribute a context-sensitive model of IREC strengthening in a post-socialist higher education setting. By documenting challenges, adaptations, and effective strategies, the study will offer transferable insights for other universities in Kazakhstan and similar contexts seeking to institutionalize human research ethics. Paper Shaping academic mobility: A structuration perspective on Pakistani PhD Students at Chinese universities Beijing Normal University, China, People's Republic of Presenting Author:Shaping academic mobility: A structuration perspective on Pakistani PhD Students at Chinese universities" Abstract: The globalization of higher education has positioned student mobility as central to 21st-century academia, enabling transnational career trajectories. This study examines Pakistani PhD students in Chinese universities an under-researched phenomenon through Giddens' Structuration Theory, analyzing how structural and agency factors shape mobility decisions. Employing a qualitative methodology, the research utilizes semi-structured interviews subjected to thematic analysis. Structural factors include Political Structures encompassing constraining and enabling dynamics between Pakistan’s instability and China’s stability, alongside regional marginalization that reinforces spatial inequities. These are complemented by Professional Factors such as research infrastructure and skills transferability, and Institutional Factors including financial and administrative enablers like scholarships and visa access, as well as flexible doctoral admissions policies. Socio-cultural factors further shape the structural landscape. In terms of agency, Personal Factors such as career pragmatism, Credentialism, transnational degree valuation, and international exposure through peer networks interact with Educational Factors including research interests and institutional reputation. The study demonstrates that Pakistan's structural constraints limit opportunities, while China's enabling environment facilitates academic mobility. The PhD sojourn transforms students academically, professionally, and personally, fostering cosmopolitan identities. Mobility outcomes depend on the intersection of national capacity and individual agency. Chinese universities serve as platforms for career advancement, contrasting with Pakistan's systemic limitations on doctoral pursuits. The findings propose the concept of "contingent mobility" to capture Pakistani students' complex trajectories neither wholly voluntary nor forced, but emerging from structural precarity in Pakistan's higher education system, China's strategic internationalization policies, and students' tactical agency through credential accumulation and network building. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Employing a qualitative, interpretivist design, and this study used Giddens' Structuration Theory to investigate the interplay of structure and agency in academic mobility, framed as a multiple-case study of individual student trajectories (Bryman, 2016). Data were collected from February to December 2023. Two Beijing public universities were selected as research sites through maximum variation sampling to capture contexts with high Pakistani doctoral enrollment (Creswell, 2012). From these, six Pakistani PhD students (three men, three women, and aged 27-37) were purposefully sampled to ensure gender and disciplinary balance (sciences/social sciences) in English-taught programs as shown in Table 1. This sample size was deemed sufficient to achieve thematic saturation for the core research questions, prioritizing depth over generalizability (Baker & Edwards, 2012; Braun & Clarke, 2021). All were Chinese scholarship recipients from diverse Pakistani regions (Punjab, Federal area, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit). Pseudonyms ensure anonymity. Semi-structured interviews, guided by a protocol based on the research questions and structuration theory, explored core themes: perceptions of educational structures, decision-making, and mobility impacts (Dejonkheere et al., 2019). Conducted in Urdu at participants' chosen times and locations to ensure comfort and precise expression, interviews lasted 45-75 minutes and were recorded as "flowing conversations" (Gill et al., 2008; Rubin, 2005). Recordings were transcribed verbatim, translated into English, and verified for accuracy by a bilingual assistant. Data analysis followed Braun and Clarke’s (2006, 2019) six-phase reflexive thematic analysis, managed with NVivo software. The process involved: familiarization with transcripts; generating initial descriptive codes (limited access with advanced labs); collating codes into themes within and across cases; reviewing themes against the dataset; defining and naming themes; and report writing. Throughout, interpretations were checked for coherence with structuration theory's core concepts. Ethical approval was granted by the Institutional Review Board of University A. Participants received information sheets and provided written informed consent covering the study's purpose, procedures, confidentiality, and right to withdraw. Data were stored securely on a password-protected computer, with all identifiers removed. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The This study examines Pakistani students’ academic mobility to Chinese universities for PhD studies, using structuration theory to extend previous research by offering a new theoretical framework (Horta, 2009; Healey, 2006; Ding, 2016; Cenci, 2015; Schevel, 2015). It challenges conventional understandings by proposing the concept of "contingent mobility" to describe these complex realities. Rather than being wholly voluntary or forced, their transnational trajectories emerge from the dynamic interplay of structural precarity in Pakistan's deteriorating higher education system, China's strategically designed internationalization policies that create asymmetric opportunities, and students' own tactical agency manifested through credential accumulation and network building. This framework moves beyond simplistic push-pull models and deterministic concepts like "impo-mobility" by capturing three critical dimensions: the paradoxical nature of mobility as simultaneously a survival strategy and aspirational pursuit, the evolving motivations throughout different doctoral phases from initial pragmatic concerns to later epistemic transformation, and the intricate power dynamics where China's soft power initiatives interact with students' efforts to overcome marginalization. By advancing this Southern structuration perspective, the study conceptualizes academic mobility as a contested domain where macro-level structural forces and micro-level individual agency interact to produce unpredictable educational pathways. This offers new insights for promoting more equitable higher education collaborations within the Global South and provides a foundation for comprehending the mobility of other highly educated groups. The findings underscore mobility’s role as a strategic investment, with students navigating structural and agency dynamics to maximize academic, professional, and personal returns. Paper Research skills: Development and acquisition among undergraduates in Educational Sciences - a European perspective University of Bucharest, Romania Presenting Author:Research skills refer to a set of interrelated abilities that enable individuals to conduct research in an effective and rigorous manner. These include the capacity to formulate meaningful research questions, systematically collect and analyse data, select and apply appropriate methodological approaches, critically interpret findings, communicate results clearly, and make informed decisions grounded in empirical evidence (Jeréz et al., 2022). Accordingly, students must develop an understanding of their disciplinary field and engage in scientific inquiry as a means of knowledge construction and innovation (Visser-Wijnveen et al., 2015; Gess et al., 2018; Salmento et al., 2021). Research skills should therefore represent a core pillar of university education, particularly in the preparation of future education professionals. The development of critical, reflective, and self-regulated thinking is essential for meaningful engagement with educational practice and research, and presupposes a solid understanding of how knowledge is produced, validated, and communicated (Murtonen, 2015; Wilson et al., 2016). In Educational Sciences, research competence is especially crucial for addressing the complex and evolving challenges of professional practice and for empowering future generations to value research as a driver of modern societies (Darling-Hammond & Bransford, 2005). Munthe and Rogne (2015) emphasised that research competence must be developed during initial university training, as it forms the foundation for evidence-based professional practice. The mastery of research skills contributes not only to individual academic and professional development, but also to broader societal progress. In this context, universities play a central role in preparing students to respond to the rapid transformations generated by scientific, technological, and innovation-driven change, equipping them to address complex professional challenges within increasingly dynamic social environments (Casanova et al., 2024). Previous research indicates that research-oriented undergraduate courses and experiences are strongly associated with higher research self-efficacy, the formation of scientific identity, and increased interest in pursuing graduate and doctoral research paths, particularly when such experiences are sustained, well-mentored, and meaningfully integrated (Fernandez et al., 2024). Within this framework, this study aims to examine how research competences are acquired among undergraduate students in the field of Education Sciences within European higher education. The question of whether undergraduates in Education Sciences possess weaker research skills than students in other disciplines remains contested. While research competence is essential for academic success and evidence-based professional practice, studies indicate mixed results. Education Sciences students often demonstrate strengths in reflective thinking and communication, but comparatively weaker scientific content knowledge, methodological rigor, and data analysis skills. These differences, however, are not uniform and are strongly influenced by curricular design, institutional context, and individual motivation (Salmento et al., 2021, Matjašič & Vogrinc, 2025). This study draws on the RMRC-K model of research competences developed by Böttcher and Thiel, which conceptualises research competence as a multidimensional construct encompassing skills in Reviewing the state of research, Methodological skills, Reflection on research findings, Communication skills, and content Knowledge (Böttcher & Thiel, 2018). This framework is used to analyse curricula and course syllabi in Educational Sciences bachelor programmes. This study focuses on two institutional contexts: universities belonging to the CIVIS European University Alliance and the top five European universities ranked by Times Higher Education according to indicators of Research Environment and Research Quality. This model is employed as a multidimensional framework for curriculum analysis, while a Delphi expert panel will be used to explore guidelines oriented to foster the research competence among education science undergraduates. The study seeks to answer how curricula structure the progressive acquisition of these competences and what patterns and trends emerge when courses are mapped, and how experts involved in undergraduate research teaching and supervision evaluate current approaches and propose guidelines for a more coherent cross-European research-methods education. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study will adopt a two-phase design to address two key objectives: (1) to identify and map the research competences embedded in the syllabi of bachelor’s degree programmes in the field of Educational Sciences by analysing intended learning outcomes, course content, duration, teaching and learning methods, and assessment practices, using the RMRC-K model proposed by Thiel and Böttcher (2018); (2) to explore and achieve expert consensus on how research competences in Education Sciences should be fostered and strengthened at undergraduate level, by identifying key gaps and priorities emerging from the curriculum analysis and translating them into evidence-informed recommendations for curriculum design and pedagogical practice. The first phase focuses on curriculum and syllabus analysis through the mapping of research competences using the RMRC-K framework. The sample includes bachelor’s degree programmes in Educational Sciences from two institutional contexts: universities belonging to the CIVIS European University Alliance and the top five European universities ranked by Times Higher Education according to indicators of Research Environment and Research Quality. For each programme, all research-oriented courses are analysed. The data corpus comprises course syllabi, intended learning outcomes, course content, contact hours and ECTS allocation, teaching and learning methods, and assessment tasks. A coding scheme grounded in the RMRC-K model will be developed, drawing on established category definitions and example indicators from previous research on research competence. After, a systematic content analysis will be conducted. Descriptive statistics and visual curriculum maps will be employed to identify gaps, redundancies, and progression patterns in the development of research competences across study years and institutional contexts. The second phase employs a Delphi expert panel to develop consensus-based guidelines for strengthening research competences. The panel will consist of 10 experts from universities belonging to the CIVIS Alliance, all of whom are involved in teaching and supervising undergraduate research in Educational Sciences. In the first round, experts will complete an online questionnaire combining open- and closed-ended questions, grounded in the findings of Phase 1, to identify key gaps, priorities, and strategies for fostering research competences within undergraduate curricula. In the second round, experts will be invited to rate and re-rate synthesised statements using Likert-type scales regarding the importance and feasibility of proposed curricular and pedagogical recommendations. Together, these two phases provide an integrated framework linking curriculum design and expert judgment within a European higher education perspective. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Overall, this study is expected to (a) diagnose how research competences are currently built into European Educational Sciences curricula, (b) identify systematic gaps and inconsistencies, and (c) generate consensual, evidence‑informed guidelines to scaffold coherent, research‑oriented undergraduate training that is comparable and recognisable across European higher education systems. The curriculum mapping is expected to offer a comparative overview of how research-related intended learning outcomes are distributed and sequenced across Educational Sciences bachelor programmes, revealing convergences and divergences in curricular approaches. It is anticipated that some research competence dimensions—such as skills in reviewing the state of research and research communication—may be under-represented or introduced late, with progression across study years appearing fragmented or inconsistent. In addition, the study is expected to generate empirical evidence on students’ initial encounters with research during undergraduate studies. By identifying the pedagogical formats through which students first engage with research-related activities, the analysis can highlight curricular entry points that foster or hinder interest in research trajectories, contributing to discussions on research preparedness, early academic socialisation, and pathways towards graduate and doctoral studies. Finally, the Delphi expert panel is expected to translate these empirical findings into a set of evidence-informed, consensus-based guidelines for strengthening research-methods education in Educational Sciences undergraduate programmes. These guidelines are anticipated to articulate priority research competences within the RMRC-K framework, recommend coherent sequencing of courses, and propose exemplary teaching and assessment strategies, such as data-driven tasks, action-research projects, and the systematic use of scientific literature. Paper Exploring the Value of a Phenomenological Pilot Study for Doctoral Research: A Methodological Reflection Charles University, Czech Republic (Czechia) Presenting Author:Many doctoral students conducting qualitative research encounter difficulties selecting appropriate research methods and instruments. These demands are complicated by time constraints and inconsistent supervisory support. Although pilot studies are commonly recommended as a practical strategy for refining study designs, their role and value in phenomenological inquiry have received limited attention in the literature (Moustakas, 1994; Finlay, 2002). This proposal investigates the value of phenomenological pilot studies by reflecting on the researcher’s experiences in a mixed-methods doctoral project focused on teacher professional development. "Pilot studies have useful functions in conducting qualitative research, but they have attracted scant attention in literature" (Kim, 2010, p. 191). For novice researchers, pilot studies can be a great way to work through uncertainties before committing to a full trial. They offer hands-on experience, close gaps in supervision or training, and shape a research identity (O'Cathain et al., 2015; Malmqvist et al., 2019). These small studies are useful for refining research designs and testing participant recruitment strategies (Lancaster et al., 2004; Kraemer et al., 2006).
Notwithstanding these benefits, reports documenting practical challenges and lessons from pilot studies remain scarce (van Teijlingen et al., 2001). Many researchers are unsure about how to measure the success of a pilot study. This leads to missed opportunities for improvement. This paper addresses this gap by proposing an evidence-based framework for assessing pilot study effectiveness in qualitative doctoral research.
The study examines the use of pilot studies in two distinct European educational contexts. Finland, which has a systematic approach to teacher professional development, has established a global reputation as a model educational system. Its research community has evolved from adopting international best practices to becoming "more a giving partner than a receiving one" (Sahlberg, 2021, p. 242). The Czech Republic has been strengthening its recent educational policies. This pairing enables the examination of how pilot study challenges manifest differently in a mature professional development system compared to a developing one. The cross-national aspect required considering linguistic and cultural factors during the pilot phase. This was especially relevant for communication norms related to recruiting teachers. This work informs European discussions about doctoral education and teacher professional development by addressing methodological preparation gaps in diverse doctoral training environments and aligning with EU policy priorities for strengthening teacher professional learning across member states (European Commission, 2020).
This study contributes to cross-national phenomenological pilot studies in European educational research, investigating how cultural, linguistic, and educational system differences impact the design and outcomes of pilot studies. This approach closes a gap in the current literature. The analysis reveals three key cross-cultural challenges: culturally specific recruitment trust patterns, linguistic bracketing requirements, and the influence of national professional development systems on teachers' professional identity. In addition to cross-cultural insights, this study redefines pilot studies as environments in which researchers cultivate their research identity.
The analysis demonstrates how pilot studies serve a compensatory pedagogical function in European doctoral programmes with limited formal methods training, a role overlooked in pilot study literature. Supervisors can enhance doctoral students' pilot study experiences by providing structured support through regular check-ins, targeted feedback, and peer collaboration, thereby strengthening both methodological rigour and researcher identity.
The following research question guided the analysis: How do phenomenological pilot studies function as sites of both methodological refinement and researcher identity development in doctoral mixed-methods research on teacher professional development?
Pilot study objectives are: 1. Develop and pilot core qualitative research procedures. 2. Test and refine participant recruitment strategies. 3. Design and refine the interview protocol through piloting. 4. Evaluate the feasibility of the transcription process and phenomenological analysis approach. 5. Reflect on the pilot study and document the lessons learnt.
Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This paper presents a phenomenological pilot study carried out from March to June 2024. As a qualitative component of a mixed-methods design, it focused on foreign language teachers' professional development in the Czech Republic and Finland, employing a phenomenological approach to explore participants' lived experiences (Moustakas, 1994; Creswell & Poth, 2023). The process involved developing the study framework, recruiting participants, designing and piloting an interview protocol, conducting two online interviews, and analysing the data. The researcher contacted participants using publicly available school email addresses. Through purposive sampling, one foreign language teacher from a lower-secondary school in each country was recruited (n = 2). This sample size is consistent with the pilot study purpose, which is to test procedures rather than achieve data saturation (van Teijlingen et al., 2001). Participants were the first respondents meeting inclusion criteria: lower-secondary foreign language teachers completed professional development in the preceding 12 months. They participated in 30–60-minute online interviews on MS Teams. The interview questions were revised using Hatch's (2023) guidelines. The data analysis used Creswell and Poth's (2023) Data Analysis Spiral, along with Moustakas's (1994) Stevick–Colaizzi–Keen method. The methodological reflection was based on several sources, such as a reflective journal, methodological memos, procedural documentation, transcription and analysis notes, supervisor feedback, and comparisons of initial and refined instruments (van Teijlingen & Hundley, 2001; Tracy, 2020; Creswell & Poth, 2023). The researcher reviewed documentation and grouped the entries based on procedural efficacy, skill enhancement, methodological modifications, resource considerations, and the researcher’s stance. Critical incidents, such as recruitment failures or problematic interview questions, were identified and analysed to determine their implications for the main study. Building on Tracy's (2010) quality criteria for qualitative research, this study proposes five dimensions for evaluating pilot study success: procedural viability, instrument quality, researcher competency development, problem identification, and resource efficiency. Together, these dimensions determine readiness for the main study. Rather than documenting 'lessons learnt', this framework gives doctoral researchers concrete criteria to determine whether their pilot has prepared them for the main study. While developed through a Finland-Czech comparison, this framework addresses common challenges across European doctoral programmes. The framework's adaptability in different contexts makes it a valuable tool. The evaluation focuses on (1) procedural effectiveness, (2) researcher skill development, (3) methodological adjustments and rationale, (4) time and resource implications, and (5) researcher positioning and bracketing challenges in phenomenological research (Tracy, 2020; Moustakas, 1994; Finlay, 2002, 2014). Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This pilot study reconceptualises phenomenological pilot studies as a stage for developing a methodological identity, where doctoral researchers transition from learning research methods to applying them. Procedurally, the pilot mitigated recruitment risks: generic email invitations produced one response over two weeks. This trial revealed teachers’ reluctance to respond to standardised requests. However, shifting to personalised messages increased response rates by 40%, saving eight weeks and preventing recruitment issues in the main study. The pilot exposed critical protocol weaknesses. Academically framed questions prompted participants to give “correct” answers, rather than explore their lived experiences. This echoes van Manen’s (1990) concept of the "colonisation of lived experience by abstract concepts". Rewording questions in teachers’ everyday language improved response depth. The cross-country comparison highlighted an important point: the Finnish participant used academic language, while the Czech participant struggled with theoretical terms, showing that linguistic bracketing must account for national differences in research literacy and necessitating country-specific interview guides. The pilot confirmed that phenomenological interviewing requires linguistic bracketing: researchers must bracket assumptions and academic language. Most significantly, the pilot enabled the researcher to develop “reflexive insider phenomenology". It became clear that bracketing personal teaching experience was neither possible nor desirable. Engagement with participants corresponded with Finlay's (2002; 2005) "reflexive embodied empathy", wherein professional knowledge enriches rather than distorts comprehension. The pilot created a space to examine this tension, develop skills in active listening, familiarity with MAXQDA, and balance insider knowledge with phenomenological openness. These insights extend discussions of pilot studies as procedural tools (Kim, 2010), showing how difficulties such as recruitment failures and protocol limitations serve as formative learning experiences rather than setbacks. This reframing reveals pilot studies' compensatory pedagogical function; in doctoral programs with limited formal methods training, they substitute for structured coursework, developing both methodological rigour and research identity.
