Paper Critical Reading - A Systematic Conceptual Review University of Jyväskylä, Finland Presenting Author:Efficiently navigating the flood of various information in the digital era requires critical reading abilities and research on how to support these skills. Today’s global society has been characterised as “post-truth”, referring to, for example, misleading news, propaganda machines, dishonest use of artificial intelligence and disinformation campaigns (Horne, 2021), which calls for critically reading and evaluating the multitude of information of varying quality (e.g. Paakkari et al., 2024; Strømsø & Kammerer, 2016). Despite their importance, however, critical reading skills are not mastered as well as they might be. For example, in the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) in 2022, it was found that less than 10% of the students were able to differentiate between a fact and an opinion or assess bias in complex texts (OECD, 2023). Also, assessing reliability or recognising bias causes difficulties for students in a commercial context (Kiili et al., 2018) as well as regarding health-related information (Paakkari et al., 2025). Moreover, not only children and adolescents, but adults, too, seem to struggle with evaluating information and sources (e.g. Andreassen & Bråten, 2013; Howe & Teufen, 2014; Kendrick & Fullerton, 2019). It is clear that systematic research on critical reading skills is thus needed in order to create effective evidence-based support that is targeted appropriately. Critical reading has been researched since the 1940’s. Still, to this day, the concept of critical reading has been defined in varying ways, which is complicating both the research field and the development of concrete pedagogical applications (e.g. Sutherland & Incera, 2021; Williams, 1959). The ways of understanding a concept are reflected in people’s thoughts and actions as individuals, researchers, practitioners and policymakers (Holt, 2016), and thus, to support the field, this paper reports a systematic conceptual review on how critical reading has been defined in the research literature. This paper can support future research as well as teaching and assessing critical reading skills by systematically collecting and analysing the existing definitions of critical reading for the first time. The present analysis of the definitions can serve as a foundation for understanding the components included in the concept, and it can be utilised by researchers as well as practitioners, for example, when planning studies or targeted pedagogical support.
Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used In this review, the existing research literature was examined to identify how critical reading is conceptualised, to clarify said conceptualisations and to identify gaps and set ideas for future research (Jaakkola, 2020). The review process was conducted in a systematic manner to make sure that the reviewed literature is as comprehensive as possible (Hulland, 2020). The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines (Page et al., 2021) were applied when appropriate. Based on scoping preliminary searches, the search terms were determined as “critical reading”, “critical reading comprehension”, “critical online reading”, “critical internet reading” and “critical visual reading”. The databases used were PubMed (476 hits), Web of Science (2442 hits), ScienceDirect (252 hits), and ERIC (543 hits) and APA PsycInfo (404 hits) via EBSCO. After deleting the duplicates, 3257 articles were left to screen. Articles were included in the review, if they were peer-reviewed academic papers in English that mentioned at least one of the five search terms in the title, abstract, or keywords. They also had to portray critical reading in a context that refers to a skill, ability, or action that can be taught or acquired. In total, 555 papers met the inclusion criteria, and out of them, 205 contained explicit definitions of critical reading. The 1285 explicit definitions from the 205 papers were then categorised using an inductive and descriptive approach drawing on the general principles of qualitative analysis. The definitions were analysed in their original form and context to ensure that the results accurately represent the reviewed papers. Generic categories and sub-categories were formed. Due to the large number and diversity of the definitions, also frequency information was included descriptively to illustrate how commonly different ways of conceptualising critical reading appeared in the reviewed literature. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Critical reading has appeared as a concept in research literature since the 1940’s, but the nature of critical reading and the elements involved remain unclear (e.g. Sutherland & Incera, 2021; Williams, 1959). In this paper, the definitions of critical reading in the existing research literature have been systematically collected and analysed. The extracted definitions were grouped into five individual viewpoints that represent the different ways of conceptualising critical reading. The preliminary viewpoints are: 1) purposes of critical reading, 2) characterisations of critical reading, 3) focus areas of critical reading, 4) subskills of critical reading, and 5) relations to other skills or concepts. The frequency of expressions within each group highlights the most common ways of defining critical reading. According to the reviewed literature, critical reading was done in order to gain deep and comprehensive understanding, to make informed judgements and to gain personal and intellectual benefits. It was both a process and an ability characterised by active, analytic and personal engagement with texts. In critical reading the focus was on the elements of the multimodal texts, the author’s traits, source information, and the reader’s personal background. Critical reading incorporated over 200 subskills; evaluating, analysing, judging and interpreting being the most mentioned ones. Finally, critical reading was often defined in relation to other similar concepts or abilities, but the relation types varied between definitions in different papers and were sometimes contradictory. This paper fosters the common understanding of critical reading to benefit both the research community and professionals working with reading. By providing conceptual clarity and information about the central aspects in critical reading, this study helps design research contributions as well as create targeted practices to support critical reading skills. Paper From Play to Power: Mapping Family Participation and Scaffolding in Geography-Rich Science Museum Exhibits Before AI The Pennsylvania State University, United States of America Presenting Author:This qualitative pilot study informs my dissertation on how artificial intelligence (AI), including conversational agent (CA)-like features, can be integrated into geography-related science museum exhibits in thoughtful and just ways (Okonkwo & Ade-Ibijola, 2021; Okita & Clarke, 2021). Rather than starting from “AI solutions,” I begin with what families already do: how children and caregivers use bodies, talk, gesture, and exhibit resources to make sense of geography-rich phenomena in non-AI exhibits (e.g., gravity-themed jumping, planetary projections, and map-like spatial puzzles). The study is grounded in sociocultural and situated perspectives on learning and treats exhibits as socio-material learning spaces where participation is organized through the entanglement of bodies, layouts, representations, and interaction rules. It draws on three strands of scholarship. First, research on family and informal science learning shows that sensemaking and identity-relevant participation emerge through intergenerational talk, gesture, and joint manipulation of museum resources (Dominke et al., 2025; Hohenstein & Tenenbaum, 2023; Nygren et al., 2024). Second, distributed scaffolding frames support as spread across tools, people, and activities—not delivered by a single “expert” (Puntambekar, 2022). Third, justice-oriented perspectives in informal STEM education argue that equity cannot be reduced to access or inclusion alone; researchers must examine how authority, recognition, and opportunities to contribute are distributed in learning spaces (Greenberg et al., 2025). In parallel, the proposal is informed by my justice-oriented conceptual reanalysis of CA-supported collaborative science learning. From 882 initial records, PRISMA screening yielded 27 empirical studies included in the synthesis (Moher et al., 2009). I developed a three-dimensional justice lens (Fricker, 2007; Learning Towards Justice Team, 2025) focused on: (1) distribution of scaffolds (e.g., who gets explanations/translation/prompts; timing/frequency; whether support follows child vs caregiver), (2) participation structures (e.g., interface control; turn-taking; who initiates/finishes; whose ideas get ratified), and (3) epistemic agency (e.g., whether children’s hypotheses are solicited, extended, or overridden; whether uncertainty is treated as productive). I adapt this lens to museums to treat “AI readiness” as an empirical question about existing participation infrastructures, rather than a technological claim. Specifically, I treat geography-rich exhibits as participation infrastructures: their layouts, interaction rules, and representational forms quietly organize who gets to act, speak, be recognized, and taken up during family sensemaking. Here, AI is not an “add-on,” but a potential reconfiguration of these existing infrastructures. European and international relevance is central because science museums are public educational spaces serving multilingual and mobile families, where language access, disability access, and public accountability shape what “help” can legitimately look like. In European contexts, AI-mediated visitor experiences are increasingly evaluated against expectations of data protection and transparency (e.g., GDPR principles such as transparency and data minimization) and emerging governance for AI systems in public life (e.g., the EU AI Act’s phased implementation). These conditions make museums a useful site for a European dialogue on how AI reorganizes voice, recognition, and opportunity-to-learn in public learning spaces. Research Questions: 1. How do children and caregivers interact with and make sense of selected geography-related exhibits in a science museum that rely on physical or rule-based interaction rather than AI/CA mediation? 2. Where do visitors and educators perceive challenges and possibilities, and how do they imagine AI or CA-like prompts/adaptive feedback might be helpful or problematic for equity, voice, and participation structures? 3. How do children, caregivers, and museum educators imagine connections between AI-enhanced exhibits and classroom science/geography learning for linguistically and culturally diverse learners, and what follow-up resources do they envision? Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study will be conducted in one large science museum with exhibits related to space, Earth systems, and geography. I will purposively select 2–3 focal exhibits that (a) foreground spatial/geographic sensemaking, (b) invite sustained embodied interaction (e.g., jumping, aligning, manipulating), and (c) rely on rule-based or pre-programmed interaction rather than AI mediation. To improve comparability, observations will be distributed across different days/times (e.g., weekend and weekday sessions). Participants and sampling. I will use naturalistic observation of approximately 20–30 family groups at the focal exhibits. Following the interaction, I will invite a subset of families (approximately 10–15 groups) to participate in brief semi-structured interviews (5–10 minutes). I will also interview museum educators (approximately 4–6) and, if feasible, 1–2 teachers who organize museum visits. Sampling will be purposive to include variation in child age, caregiver roles, and linguistic/cultural backgrounds when self-reported. Data sources. (1) Field notes capturing interaction “episodes” (from approach to exit), including sequences of action, gesture, talk, role shifts, interface/control patterns, and references to signage or facilitation. When feasible, I will add quick spatial sketches to document layout, positioning, and movement pathways. (2) Post-interaction interviews eliciting participants’ interpretations, moments of interest/confusion, and experiences of inclusion/exclusion, followed by 1–2 short AI design scenarios to surface perceived benefits, risks, and fairness concerns. Interviews will be audio recorded with consent; otherwise, expanded notes will be written immediately after. (3) Educator/teacher interviews focused on exhibit goals, typical visitor patterns, and anticipated shifts in learning and inclusion under AI-enhanced designs. Analysis. Analysis will be iterative. I will begin with open coding across notes and transcripts, then develop focused codes aligned with the three justice dimensions (distribution of scaffolds, participation structures, epistemic agency). I will build cross-case matrices (exhibits × family groups) to compare patterns and generate grounded design conjectures. Trustworthiness will be supported through reflexive memoing, triangulation across data sources, and examination of discrepant cases. Feasibility and timeline: Data collection is planned to begin in April 2026, pending IRB approval and museum access confirmation. Initial coding and cross-case matrices are anticipated in May–June 2026, enabling preliminary patterns and design conjectures to be shared at ERC in August 2026. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings As a pilot-in-progress, the study will not claim definitive findings about AI impacts. Instead, it will produce three outcomes that strengthen a dissertation trajectory and contribute to international discussions of educational space, justice, and AI in informal learning. First, it will produce a grounded description of how families currently engage geography-rich embodied exhibits—documenting recurring participation patterns (who leads, who watches, how roles rotate), key moments of sensemaking, and where exhibit layouts and interaction rules appear to open or constrain opportunities for different family members. Second, it will surface visitor- and educator-articulated opportunities and tensions for AI integration. Anticipated themes include desired supports (e.g., translation, prompts that amplify quieter voices, explanations responsive to children’s embodied actions) and perceived risks (e.g., surveillance concerns, language-based exclusion, narrowing what counts as a “good” response). These insights will be organized using the justice lens of scaffold distribution, participation structures, and epistemic agency, so that future AI designs can be assessed not only for perceived benefits, but for how they redistribute opportunity-to-learn. Third, it will map how participants imagine connections between museum experiences and classroom science/geography learning—especially for linguistically and culturally diverse learners—and what follow-up resources (take-home prompts, classroom extensions, family conversation supports) they value. Together, these outcomes will inform design requirements for AI-enhanced geography exhibits that remain responsive to real intergenerational practices and justice-centered aims. Deliverables will include (a) a cross-case participation map (exhibits × family groups) capturing control, talk, gesture, and recognition patterns; (b) a brief justice-oriented coding memo specifying observable indicators for each lens dimension; and (c) a set of grounded design conjectures for what “just AI help” would mean in embodied, intergenerational museum settings. Paper Subjectivation and Sustainability. A Situational Analysis of Subjectivating Practices in the German Maker Movement. Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg, Germany Presenting Author:Modern societies are shaped more than ever by crises and the discourses surrounding them. Under the term ‘polycrisis’, “multiple and partly overlapping crises” (Horsbøl, 2022, p. 293) associated with a high level of complexity and conflict are discursively negotiated, foremost among them the already occurring and anticipated consequences of climate change. Within these complex, overlapping and oftentimes conflicting discursive fields, institutions and individual actors increasingly face the challenge of implementing practices promoting sustainability on various levels. Simultaneously, the "necessities and goals of transformation" (Jaeger-Erben & Hielscher 2022, p. 140, translation by the author) to change production and consumption patterns and thereby counter ecological crises are currently being debated. A phenomenon entangled in the discursive field of sustainability which has been garnering attention internationally — especially in educational research — is the so-called maker movement. Makerspaces, the central hubs of the movement, can be described as open workshops where people from diverse demographic backgrounds have the opportunity to realize project ideas involving a wide range of analog and digital tools and materials (Martin, 2015). Individuals and communities within and around makerspaces often adhere to certain values and mindsets, such as openness, inclusivity, and especially sustainability (see contributions in Baier et al., 2016). Furthermore, public discourses frequently attribute utopian potential to the maker scene, as shown by the discourse analysis of Hepp, Benz, and Simon (2021), which focused on the public discourse around the movement during the COVID pandemic. On the other hand, individual spaces at imes fall short of these ideals and potentials, particularly concerning their efforts toward sustainable practices (Kohtala, 2017). In sum, a high degree of ambivalence can be observed within the maker movement regarding the aforementioned values and principles, which is particularly evident in questions of sustainability. In the dissertation project presented, the maker scene is approached as a social movement (Walter-Herrmann, 2013) in the context of which sustainability is continually negotiated. Following Gunzelmann (2019), these negotiations can be thought of as a multidirectional process: for one, the movement as a social world participates in negotiations concerning the discourses around sustainability as they are constituted in multiple societal arenas (e.g. academe, politics, education) while on the other hand, negotiations take place among actors within the movement itself. Within this construct, subjectivation processes occur as actors engage with the discursive in their daily practices. Building on an understanding of subjectivation as the relational production or epigenesis of subjects (Ricken, 2019), primary aim of the dissertation project is to investigate to what extent and which subject positions related to aspects of sustainability are discursively negotiated within the maker movement, and how these are in turn met by subjects (e.g., accepted, reinterpreted, rejected, etc.). The foundational approach of this work, which seeks to explore and reconstruct discursive elements through practices (Macgilchrist, 2020 p. 33), places the practices of makers at the center of the analysis. The following research question and subquestions guide the project.
After briefly outlining the theoretical and methodological considerations mentioned above, focusing on the specific adaptations of the heuristic tools of situational analysis, preliminary findings will be presented and discussed. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The research project follows the qualitative-exploratory paradigm and seeks to connect with praxeologically oriented discourse research. In the understanding adopted here, following Wrana & Langer (2007) discourse is not analysed as an isolated unit, but rather, „discursive practices are examined taking into account their situatedness and entanglements“ (paragraph 14, translation by the author). Following a poststructuralist-praxeological approach, discursive elements are therefore reconstructed through different data types, i.e. observed practices and captured in the context of the maker movement following a (discourse-)ethnographic approach (Macgilchrist 2020). Combining ethnographic research with the cartographic analytic toolkit of situational analysis as a discourse-sensitive extension of grounded theory (Clarke, 2005) data collection and analysis are alternated in an iterative, reflexive process. Situated practices that both generate the discourse on sustainability and reproduce and consolidate discursive formations around sustainability within the maker movement thereby form the analytical focus. As a primary method of data-collection, multi-sited focused ethnography (Knoblauch, 2001), specifically participant observation, is applied. Thereby, (micro-)practices in the daily operations in multiple makerspaces are observed in iterative phases of field research on-site. As is specific to focused ethnography, data collection takes place in certain concentrated phases, such as opening hours in the makerspaces or organizational meetings and includes ethnographic interviews with makers during those field visits. Field notes and observation protocols are compiled for each such phase. These on-site phases are supplemented by online-ethnographical observations in chat rooms. The sample consists of makerspaces in Germany without affiliation to an (educational) institution, such as a school or university. So as to ensure the possibility of observing situated (micro-)practices, these makerspaces were selected based on whether or not they offer opening hours during which makers can freely engage in making activities, as opposed to the activities being limited to workshops and classes offered. There have been multiple iterations of data collection and analysis phases already. In line with theoretical sampling, additional makerspaces are selected in an iterative and cyclical process of analysis and theorisation (Glaser & Strauss, 2017/1967). Data analysis is conducted using the analytical maps and coding techniques of situational analysis (Clarke, 2005) and adapting them to fit the specific requirements of the project. This approach, based on the theoretical and methodological underpinnings of symbolic interactionism and grounded theory, is particularly sensitive towards the discursive and supports multi-sited, heterogenous and complex fields of research, such as the maker movement. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The presentation will report on preliminary findings that can be gleaned from the iterations of data collection and analysis, which began in January 2025. After outlining the theoretical and methodological underpinnings as well as research questions and methods, first mappings of the research situation will be presented and discussed, giving an idea of the elements, relations, social worlds and arenas and positionalities (Clarke, 2005) involved. From these, a first outline of reconstructions of subjectivation processes can tentatively be drawn. To provide an outlook, the selected methods and research process will be reflected, along with possible implications for further sample-building.
