Paper Teacher Preparedness and Assistive Technology Use in Supporting Social-Emotional Development in Children with Autism 1: University of Warsaw, Poland; 2: Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, Turkey Presenting Author:Inclusive education and the meaningful use of assistive technologies (AT) for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are key priorities within European education systems. AT—such as augmentative and alternative communication tools, visual supports, and digital applications—can enhance communication, predictability, and social-emotional development, particularly in early childhood education. Despite evidence of their effectiveness, AT remains inconsistently implemented in inclusive classrooms. This inconsistency is closely linked to digital inequalities, limited teacher preparedness, uneven institutional support, and insufficient integration of inclusive digital pedagogies into teacher education. These issues have strong European relevance because they affect equity, accessibility, and participation across diverse education systems. Teachers are central to translating inclusive policies into classroom practice. Their professional knowledge, attitudes, and confidence determine whether AT is used as a meaningful pedagogical resource or remains underutilized. Although European policy frameworks promote equity and inclusive participation, teachers across countries continue to face challenges related to training, infrastructure, and guidance on developmentally appropriate and evidence-based AT use. This study responds to the need for cross-national research that examines teacher preparedness and professional support needs in relation to inclusive education and AT, with a particular focus on the social-emotional development of children with ASD. The overarching objective of the study is to explore how pre-service and in-service teachers from Poland, Spain, and Türkiye perceive their preparedness, challenges, and support needs when working with children with ASD in inclusive educational settings. Particular attention is given to the role of assistive technologies in supporting social-emotional learning and inclusion. Research aims include:
Research questions:
The study is grounded in inclusive pedagogy and socio-cultural perspectives, which conceptualise inclusion as a dynamic process shaped by interactions between learners, teachers, institutional structures, and policy environments. Inclusive pedagogy emphasises responsibility for all learners and flexible, non-deficit-based teaching approaches. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles further inform the study by framing AT as a means of reducing barriers through multiple forms of representation, engagement, and expression. Additionally, the study draws on the CASEL framework for social and emotional learning, which identifies five core competencies—self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. AT is conceptualised as a mediating tool that can scaffold thesecompetencies when embedded within developmentally appropriate and inclusive pedagogical practices. This study adopts a cross-national comparative design involving pre-service and in-service teachers from Poland, Spain, and Türkiye, reflecting the European dimension of the Erasmus+ project EARLY-ASD (project no. 2024-1-PL01-KA220-HED-000246304). The research aims to capture both shared and context-specific patterns in teacher preparedness, professional support needs, and the integration of AT for children with ASD in inclusive classrooms. A mixed-methods approach is employed to provide both breadth and depth in understanding teachers’ experiences. Quantitative data are collected through a structured online survey designed to measure teachers’ self-perceived preparedness, attitudes toward inclusion, use of AT, and access to professional support. The survey includes standardized items and scales adapted from established instruments in inclusive education and educational technology research, ensuring comparability across national contexts. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study adopted a quantitative, cross-national survey research design (Creswell & Plano Clark, 2018) to examine early childhood in-service and pre-service teachers’ experiences, challenges, and training needs related to the use of assistive technology (AT) in supporting the social–emotional development of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The research was conducted across three national contexts—Poland, Spain, and Türkiye—to enable systematic comparisons between countries and between in-service and pre-service teacher groups. A quantitative approach was selected to facilitate statistical analysis of patterns, differences, and relationships among key variables related to AT preparedness and use. Two parallel survey instruments were developed: one targeting in-service early childhood teachers and the other pre-service teachers. The instruments were comparable in structure and content, allowing for meaningful cross-group analysis. Each survey was translated and culturally adapted for use in Poland, Spain, and Türkiye using established translation and adaptation procedures to ensure linguistic accuracy and contextual relevance. The quantitative components of the surveys consisted primarily of 5-point Likert-type items measuring participants’ training experiences, perceived preparedness, confidence in using AT, frequency of AT use, and perceived barriers to implementation. In this study, perceived preparedness refers to participants’ self-assessed capacity to effectively support children with ASD in inclusive early childhood settings, encompassing both theoretical knowledge and practical competence in applying inclusive and AT-supported strategies to foster social–emotional development (Kimhi & Bar-Nir, 2025; Kaczorowski & Kline, 2021).Each instrument comprised two main sections: (1) Demographic information (e.g., professional status, training background, and teaching context); (2) Likert-type items assessing training, preparedness, familiarity and use of AT, and perceived challenges or barriers. Data collection took place between February and March 2025. Surveys were administered online using Google Forms, with distribution strategies tailored to local contexts to maximise accessibility and response rates. Preparatory meetings were held in each participating country to train local coordinators and ensure standardised administration procedures. Pre-notification emails and information sheets detailing the study’s purpose, ethical considerations, and voluntary participation were distributed, followed by reminder messages. Participants completed the survey independently, with local coordinators available to address questions. All datasets were screened for completeness and cleaned prior to analysis. Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including ANOVA, Kruskal–Wallis tests, post-hoc comparisons, and effect size calculations, to examine differences across countries and participant groups. The study was approved by the Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Ethics Committee ( 2025) in line with the Declaration of Helsinki. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This study offers cross-national insights into the preparedness, challenges, and professional support needs of pre-service and in-service teachers working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in inclusive educational settings across diverse European contexts. By comparing experiences from multiple countries, the study highlights both shared challenges and context-specific responses within European education systems. While teachers broadly endorse the principles of inclusion promoted at the European level, their confidence and capacity to implement inclusive practices vary considerably. Practical classroom experience and structured professional training emerge as key factors supporting teachers’ readiness to work inclusively with learners with ASD. However, pre-service teachers across countries consistently report limited opportunities for hands-on learning and insufficient exposure to inclusive classrooms. This points to a persistent gap between European policy aspirations and everyday educational practice. Assistive technologies (AT) are widely recognised as important tools for supporting participation, communication, and learning, yet their effective integration remains uneven due to disparities in access to resources, targeted training, and institutional support across national contexts. The expected outcomes of the study include the identification of common priorities for strengthening teacher education in inclusive education across Europe. The findings suggest that inclusive pedagogy and assistive technologies should be embedded as core components of both pre-service and in-service teacher education programmes, in line with European policy frameworks promoting equity, accessibility, and lifelong learning. The study also highlights the need for flexible, multi-level professional development models that combine experiential learning, formal instruction, and digital opportunities to support cross-national knowledge exchange. Overall, this research contributes to the European discourse on inclusive education by providing empirically grounded evidence to inform policy, teacher education, and school leadership, supporting progress towards inclusive and equitable education for all learners. Paper Inclusive Exhaustion: Autism and the Conditions of Sustainable Participation University of Gothenburg, Sweden Presenting Author:Across European education systems, inclusion is increasingly framed in terms of access, participation, and recognition of diversity. Policy frameworks and institutional practices emphasise widening access and supporting engagement, particularly in higher education and professional pathways. Yet many autistic adults—especially those who have formally entered and remained within these systems—describe persistent exhaustion, withdrawal, and burnout that arise not from exclusion, but from the sustained effort of remaining included. This recurring pattern raises a central question: under what conditions does participation become sustainable, and what does it require to remain recognisable as such within contemporary inclusion regimes? This paper develops the concept of inclusive exhaustion to analyse exhaustion as a relational and institutional phenomenon rather than an individual coping failure. It builds on qualitative research on autistic burnout, masking, and participation (Raymaker et al., 2020; Botha & Frost, 2020; Hull et al., 2017), which consistently describes cycles of high effort, delayed collapse, and withdrawal. While this research is often interpreted in terms of stress or vulnerability, the present analysis instead examines the conditions under which participation becomes possible, and how these conditions are distributed. The argument proceeds through a distinction between epistemic and performative dimensions of participation. Epistemic difficulty concerns the work of understanding and learning. Performative difficulty concerns the conditions under which this understanding must become visible as competence—through timing, responsiveness, and adherence to implicit norms. This distinction helps explain why exhaustion persists even where epistemic access is supported: while learning may be accessible, the conditions under which learning must be displayed remain continuous and evaluatively charged. Within this framework, participation depends not only on knowledge or competence, but on the capacity to render that competence intelligible under prevailing expectations. This often involves what can be described as translation labour: the ongoing work of interpreting expectations, calibrating responses, and aligning expression with dominant norms of communication. Participants describe not only having to understand tasks, but having to determine how much to say, how quickly to respond, and how to appear appropriately engaged. These dynamics are situated within a critical–phenomenological account of institutional time and organisation. Drawing on work on rhythm and resonance (Fuchs, 2018; Rosa, 2019) and on audit and performativity in education (Ball, 2003; Power, 1997), the paper argues that educational environments are organised around expectations of continuous performance, visibility, and responsiveness. Where institutional systems lack slack or flexibility, the burden of adjustment shifts onto individuals, who must sustain alignment across contexts in order to remain recognisable as competent. From this perspective, inclusive exhaustion can be understood as the cumulative cost of sustaining participation under conditions of misalignment between uneven cognitive rhythms and environments calibrated for continuous performance. Exhaustion emerges not simply from high demand, but from the requirement to remain intelligible within systems that do not make their expectations explicit. What appears as individual fatigue can thus be reinterpreted as an index of institutional miscalibration. The paper contributes to inclusive education research by shifting the focus from access to the sustainability of participation over time. In relation to the conference theme Knowing and Acting, it highlights how inclusion regimes privilege particular forms of acting—being visibly engaged and responsive—while marginalising forms of knowing that unfold unevenly or require temporal margin. While developed through autistic experience, inclusive exhaustion is proposed as a travelling concept for understanding participation under audit-driven inclusion regimes more broadly. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This paper is conceptual and synthetic rather than empirical. It does not generate new primary data, but develops a conceptual argument through a re-reading of existing qualitative research on autistic participation, masking, and burnout, alongside relevant theoretical work in phenomenology, disability studies, and critical analyses of educational institutions. The aim is not to re-code empirical material, but to clarify the conditions under which participation becomes possible and sustainable within contemporary inclusion regimes. The analysis is guided by the following research question: under what conditions does participation become recognisable as competent and appropriate within educational environments, and how are these conditions distributed? This question shifts the focus from individual capacity or access to the relational and institutional organisation of participation. Methodologically, the paper proceeds through three interrelated analytical moves. First, it adopts a critical–phenomenological orientation to participation, drawing on accounts of embodied temporality, rhythm, and resonance (Fuchs, 2018; Rosa, 2019). Exhaustion is approached not simply as fatigue, but as a disturbance of participation over time: a point at which alignment between individual pacing and institutional expectations can no longer be sustained. This allows attention to how participation is lived, rather than only how it is formally structured. Second, it engages in a synthetic reading of qualitative research as experiential evidence. Studies of autistic burnout, masking, and participation (Raymaker et al., 2020; Botha & Frost, 2020; Hull et al., 2017) are treated as accounts of recurring patterns, including sustained effort, delayed collapse, and cycles of adaptation and withdrawal. Rather than extracting themes, the analysis attends to how participants describe the conditions under which their actions are recognised as competent, appropriate, or intelligible. Third, these experiential patterns are situated within a critical analysis of institutional organisation, particularly in relation to audit culture, performativity, and responsibilised self-management (Ball, 2003; Power, 1997). This step makes visible how expectations of continuous performance, visibility, and responsiveness are embedded in educational systems, and how variability is displaced onto individuals when institutional flexibility is limited. Across these analytical moves, the distinction between epistemic and performative difficulty functions as a conceptual tool for tracing how participation may be supported at the level of learning while remaining unsustainable at the level of recognition and display. The concept of inclusive exhaustion is developed through this synthesis as a way of naming the cumulative effects of these conditions. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This paper argues that exhaustion among autistic adults should be understood not primarily as individual vulnerability, but as a relational and institutional phenomenon arising from persistent misalignment between uneven cognitive rhythms and environments calibrated for continuous performance, responsiveness, and auditability. By conceptualising this dynamic as inclusive exhaustion, the analysis shifts attention from coping and resilience toward the organisation of participation itself. The central outcome is a reframing of exhaustion as an index of institutional miscalibration. Where educational systems prioritise continuity, visibility, and standardised pacing, variability must be absorbed somewhere. Under current conditions, this variability is disproportionately absorbed by individuals, through sustained efforts to interpret expectations and render their responses intelligible. Participation thus becomes conditional not only on access, but on the capacity to maintain recognisability over time. This reframing contributes to ongoing discussions in inclusive education research (e.g. Slee, 2018; Nilholm, 2020) by extending the focus from access and presence to the sustainability of participation. It suggests that inclusion cannot be evaluated solely in terms of entry or engagement, but must also consider whether participation can be maintained without disproportionate cost, and how responsibility for adjustment is distributed across individuals and institutions. For educational practice, the analysis points toward the importance of attending to institutional tempo, expectations of visibility, and the availability of temporal margin. This includes recognising forms of participation that do not align with continuous responsiveness, and creating conditions that allow for variation in pacing, recovery, and modes of engagement. Finally, while developed through autistic experience, inclusive exhaustion is proposed as a travelling concept for analysing participation under audit-driven inclusion regimes more broadly. Future research could examine how temporal demands are negotiated across educational contexts, and how institutional rhythms might be recalibrated to support more sustainable and equitable forms of participation. Paper Reading Comprehension as an Invisible Gatekeeper: Inclusive Literacy Pathways, Neurodiversity, and NEET Risk in Superdiverse Contexts Sinop University, Turkey (Türkiye) Presenting Author:Across superdiverse education systems, NEET (Not in Employment, Education, or Training) trajectories are often explained through visible socio-economic constraints—poverty, migration, family structure—while "quiet barriers" inside schooling remain under-measured. This paper argues that reading comprehension functions as an invisible gatekeeper to participation in secondary education, vocational pathways, and labor-market entry, particularly for neurodivergent learners (including autism spectrum disorder, dyslexia, and other learning differences) who are frequently underserved in inclusive education implementation. We develop an inclusion-to-transition pathway model in which literacy access is not only a pedagogical issue but also a mechanism shaping opportunity structures. In superdiverse contexts, literacy barriers interact with disability status, language background, gendered expectations, and institutional capacity, producing non-linear risk accumulation. The result is that students can be formally "included" (i.e., enrolled in mainstream classrooms) yet practically excluded from curricular access, credential attainment, and transition supports—conditions that elevate NEET risk. Reading comprehension is foundational to nearly all secondary-level learning: understanding textbooks, following instructions, accessing digital resources, and participating in assessments. For neurodivergent students, difficulties with decoding, vocabulary, inference-making, or executive function can create cascading disadvantages. When these difficulties are not identified early or addressed with evidence-based interventions, students fall progressively behind, experience repeated academic failure, and disengage from schooling. This disengagement is often misattributed to "lack of motivation" or "family problems" rather than recognized as a consequence of inadequate literacy support. The problem is compounded in superdiverse settings where teachers face high classroom heterogeneity (students with varying language proficiencies, prior schooling experiences, and support needs) but receive limited training in differentiated instruction or evidence-based literacy interventions. Research from Turkey, Jordan, and similar middle-income contexts shows that inclusive education policies are often implemented without corresponding investments in teacher capacity, instructional materials, or progress monitoring systems (Kuyini & Desai, 2007; Savolainen et al., 2012). As a result, neurodivergent students—who could succeed with appropriate supports—are left to "sink or swim," and many sink. This paper synthesizes evidence across three domains: (i) reading comprehension interventions suitable for inclusive classrooms (e.g., explicit instruction, graphic organizers, peer-assisted learning), (ii) progress monitoring and individualized supports (e.g., curriculum-based measurement, single-case design), and (iii) transition-focused instruction linking academic access to employability skills (e.g., functional literacy, self-advocacy, career exploration). We argue that addressing literacy barriers is not merely a matter of academic equity but a structural transformation lever: improving reading comprehension for neurodivergent students increases human capital, reduces dropout and NEET risk, and enhances labor-market participation. Our conceptual contribution is twofold. First, we reframe literacy access as a system-level mechanism rather than an individual deficit. Poor reading outcomes reflect not only student characteristics but also teacher capacity, curriculum design, assessment practices, and institutional responsiveness. Second, we propose a feasible evaluation design for subsequent empirical work: using single-case experimental design (a strength of special education research) to trace mechanisms at the individual level, while integrating system-level indicators (e.g., school policies, transition provisions, NEET rates) to ensure relevance beyond individual cases. This design is particularly suited to middle-income and low-income contexts where large-scale randomized trials are often infeasible. We conclude with implications for teacher education, inclusive curriculum design, and policy: if reading comprehension remains unaddressed as a foundational access mechanism, inclusion agendas risk becoming symbolic rather than transformative. By making literacy barriers visible and actionable, we can strengthen the link between inclusive education and economic participation.
Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This paper is positioned as a research-to-practice conceptual paper informed by evidence synthesis, with a clear roadmap for empirical follow-up. The methodology consists of three components: Component 1: Evidence Synthesis on Reading Comprehension Interventions We conducted a targeted review of meta-analyses and systematic reviews (2010–2025) on reading comprehension interventions for students with disabilities and neurodivergence in inclusive settings. Databases searched: ERIC, PsycINFO, and What Works Clearinghouse. We prioritized interventions with evidence of effectiveness in heterogeneous classrooms (not just pull-out or specialized settings) and feasibility in resource-constrained contexts. Key sources included: Berkeley et al. (2010) on comprehension strategy instruction, Wanzek et al. (2013) on intensive interventions, and Gersten et al. (2001) on teaching reading to students with learning disabilities. We extracted intervention components (e.g., explicit instruction, scaffolding, peer support), implementation requirements (e.g., training, materials), and reported effect sizes. Component 2: Single-Case Design as Mechanism-Tracing Tool We reviewed methodological literature on single-case experimental design (SCED) (Kratochwill et al., 2013; Horner et al., 2005) to establish its suitability for studying literacy interventions in superdiverse, resource-constrained settings. SCED offers high internal validity (clear causal inference at the individual level), flexibility (adaptable to diverse student needs), and feasibility (does not require large samples or extensive infrastructure). We outline a proposed SCED protocol for future empirical work: (i) baseline assessment of reading comprehension using curriculum-based measures, (ii) implementation of evidence-based intervention (e.g., graphic organizers, reciprocal teaching), (iii) repeated measurement to document progress, and (iv) qualitative data (teacher interviews, student self-reports) to contextualize findings. This protocol is designed to be replicable across different contexts (Turkey, Jordan, other middle-income countries). Component 3: System-Level Contextualization To ensure that individual-level findings inform system-level policy, we propose integrating SCED results with secondary data analysis: national education statistics (e.g., dropout rates, special education enrollment, literacy assessment results) and labor force surveys (e.g., NEET rates by disability status, educational attainment). We also propose policy document analysis to assess the alignment (or misalignment) between inclusive education policies and actual provision of literacy supports. This mixed-methods approach allows us to trace mechanisms from classroom practice to system outcomes without fabricating data or making unsupported claims. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This paper makes three contributions to inclusive education research and practice. First, we identify reading comprehension as a critical but under-recognized mechanism linking inclusive education to NEET risk. While much research focuses on access (enrollment, placement) or attitudes (teacher beliefs, peer acceptance), we argue that curricular access—the ability to engage with grade-level content—is the missing link. For neurodivergent students, inadequate literacy support creates a cascade of disadvantages: academic failure, disengagement, dropout, and labor-market exclusion. Second, we propose a methodologically rigorous yet feasible approach for studying this mechanism in middle-income and low-income contexts. Single-case experimental design offers a practical alternative to large-scale trials, providing clear causal evidence at the individual level while remaining adaptable to diverse settings. By integrating SCED with system-level data, we can trace how classroom-level interventions scale (or fail to scale) to population-level outcomes. Third, we reframe literacy access as a structural transformation lever. Improving reading comprehension for neurodivergent students is not merely a matter of individual remediation but a system-level investment in human capital. When students can access the curriculum, they are more likely to complete secondary education, pursue vocational training or higher education, and enter the labor market with competitive skills. Conversely, when literacy barriers remain unaddressed, inclusion becomes symbolic: students are physically present in classrooms but functionally excluded from learning opportunities. For policy, our findings suggest that inclusive education strategies must invest in: (i) teacher training in evidence-based literacy instruction, (ii) progress monitoring systems to identify struggling readers early, and (iii) transition supports that link academic skills to employability. For practice, we offer a concrete roadmap: evidence-based interventions that are feasible in heterogeneous classrooms, a measurement approach (SCED) that provides actionable feedback, and a system-level perspective that connects classroom practice to economic participation. Therefore, it has been a stated political goal for decades to get more students with disabilities to complete higher education (Bø, 2018). The legislation provides the basis for students with disabilities to have individual right to accommodation (Equality and Anti-Discrimination Act, 2017; Universities and Colleges Act, 2024). Students who have both a disability and a high learning potential are a topic which in lesser degree have been investigated through research. Being “doubly exceptional” can be challenging both for the student themselves, and for those around them. It may be assumed that students with high learning potential can manage on their own. High learning potential can manifest itself in acquiring learning content at a faster pace than others, and having great potential within academic subjects such as mathematics, reading/writing/language, arts, science, and technology (Idsøe, 2025, p. 649). A great learning potential can occur simultaneously with learning disorders such as ASD, which may point to a need for accommodation even with good cognitive abilities (Idsøe, 2025, p. 651-652). Purpose The purpose of this ongoing study is to investigate how HE students with both high learning potential and a disability in the form of ASD (autism spectrum disorder), can manage academic learning activities, and further, to what extent they are provided with help and support in the form of accommodations. ASD was selected as disability because several studies indicate that students with this diagnosis are a growing student group (Gelbar et al., 2014, p. 2593; Knarlag, 2016). The article examines the part of student life that deals with participation in and completion of academic learning activities such as lectures, work requirements and reading the syllabus and other academic material on their own. The research question following this study is: How do students with both high learning potential and ASD experience the completion of academic learning activities, and what offers of accommodation are they becoming in HE? Several studies indicate that academic learning activities have been less investigated through research, and this also applies to students with disabilities. As an example, Anderson et al., (2019, p. 1554) point out that “the significance of their [ASD students] academic difficulties and need for academic support may have been undervalued”. Failure to succeed in academic tasks can lead to students with ASD dropping out of higher education (Byrne, 2022). Challenges For children and young people with great learning potential, teaching and tasks can be experienced as unrewarding and unmotivating both in primary and secondary education, and they can thus appear as underachievers (Lie, 2014, p. 87). It is therefore not obvious that students with great learning potential will get as far as higher education in their qualification for adult life. It is also not obvious that academic learning activities in HE will “go by themselves”. Academic learning activities require concentration, staying focused and being able to work purposefully with abstract texts and content over time. For students with ASD, this can be demanding, since a characteristic of the diagnosis is a failure of executive functions, which can be expressed in difficulties in planning, getting started with academic tasks, regulating time and energy, and making choices (Gleinsvik et al., 2018, p. 22; Knarlag, 2016, p. 19). Against this background, it is relevant to investigate the extent to which “doubly exceptional” can also lead to "double challenges" in completion of academic learning activities.
Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The study's research question How do students with both high learning potential and ASD experience the implementation of academic learning activities, and what offers of accommodation are they given? is investigated through a systematic review of research articles on higher education. The research articles are based on empirical studies conducted in one or more of the Nordic countries Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland. The systematic literature review is organized in five steps. The first step is to develop a research question, the second step is to create inclusion and exclusion criteria, and the third step is to assess relevant research articles. In the fourth step, key findings are generated and summarized, while in the fifth step, the findings are interpreted (Brandt et al., 2014 p. 395). Sample The sample was defined by predetermined exclusion and inclusion criteria, such as Publication types: Peer-reviewed articles and doctoral dissertations are included while books, master's theses, reports and evaluations (grey literature) are excluded. Focus is on empirical research on higher education in Nordic countries, while non-empirical studies are excluded. Time frame is 2015- 2024. Languages included are Norwegian, English, Swedish and Danish. Databases included are among Oria, ERIC and similar bases Data collection and analysis Data collection starts with systematic search processes in the relevant databases, which may lead to hits based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria in Table 1. A review of each article will show whether several publications are duplicate, and they will therefore be excluded. The same will apply to articles that are not peer-reviewed, for example book chapters. According to Hart (2018), it is necessary to read and evaluate research findings analytically and critically. Although the search process will be carried out in a thorough manner, there may be articles that will not be successfully obtained due to inclusion and exclusion criteria and choice of databases. In the analysis work, the relevant articles will be coded and categorized (Miles et al, 2014), scrutinized for information about how students with both high learning potential and ASD experience the implementation of academic learning activities, and also, what offers of accommodation they are given from their university or university college. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Universities and colleges in Norway have a major responsibility to provide appropriate individual accommodation to students with disabilities (Equality and Anti-Discrimination Act, 2017; Universities and Colleges Act, 2024). This is the ideal, but there are challenges associated with making this happen in practice. A comprehensive study of the content on the 32 most relevant universities and college websites, which deal with accommodation for students with disabilities, shows that there are little specified measures specifically aimed at ASD students (Rygg & Håberg, 2025). As an example, only four of the 32 institutions specifically mention ASD when making accommodation for exams (Rygg et al., 2024). Another example is the concept of disability as a premise for having the right to accommodation can be misunderstood. In a qualitative interview study with 14 students with either ASD, dyslexia, or ADHD, all of them said that they do not see themselves as a person with a disability. They think this is "too harsh" a term (Håberg, 2026, in press). They have therefore been students for several years before seeking help with accommodation. The consequences for most of them have been several interrupted studies and mental health problems requiring psychological help (Håberg, 2026, in press). Another aspect is that it can be challenging not only for students with high learning potential and ASD, but also for staff to find out what accommodation these students need. Svendby (2020) emphasizes that there in Norwegian HE is a need for increased competence and knowledge among employees about student diversity, adaptation competence and pedagogical tools.
