Paper Re-making HE Partnership Research amid GenAI and Polycrisis: Disrupting Extractive Methodological Assumptions to Co-construct Postdigital Positionalities 1: Bath Spa University, United Kingdom; 2: University of Brighton, United Kingdom; 3: University of Wolverhampton, United Kingdom; 4: Zagreb University of Applied Sciences, Croatia Presenting Author:The recent surge of academic opinion on how Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) should be engaged with ethically in educational research, deployed strategically, or dismissed as toxic to the environment and distracting, has arrived amid critical responses to existing polycrisis (Tooze 2021). Muldoon and Wu (2023) argue that global economic and political power imbalances in GAI production cannot be separated from continuities of historical colonialism, which now constitute the supply chain of GAI (Png 2022, Traxler & Jandrić 2025). This extracts value from labour in the Global South to benefit Western technology companies, perpetuates hegemonic knowledge production and structures research approaches that marginalise non-Western alternatives. This is reflected in local research partnerships too, where topics like ‘forced adoption of GAI’ (Seybold 2026) are still examined via traditional research methods which may unwittingly also reproduce an ethos of ‘extraction’, over more equitable ‘co-production’. We explore, firstly, how postdigital polycrisis, including Covid-19, global economic and political instability, GAI, climate and environmental challenges and threats to Higher Education (HE) have highlighted pressing overlapping concerns of equity in both global and local educational research partnerships (Traxler, Scott, Smith & Hayes 2020). A replication of the ‘extractive’ models of labour and data collection that underpin GAI seems also to be repeated even in HE-led research projects that claim to address such inequalities. This is partly due to a biased Europatriarchal approach to the polycrisis that ‘is unsuitable for tackling the polycrisis because it is the polycrisis’ (Salami, 2024:52). Educational research projects in the Global North may seek to address global or local inequities, but without a more structural overhaul of traditional, university-centric methodologies, there is a risk that little changes. In order to explore and disrupt this dilemma, we examine secondly, projects that advocate for a clear move away from university-dominated structuring of research methods and data collection. Whilst ethics and rigour are key to equitable research, partners can be more extensively involved throughout research cycles to co-create more equitable, diverse and inclusive methodological approaches ‘from the ground up’ (Hayes et. al., 2025). We discuss too work-in-progress that draws on novel ways to include creative activity with GAI, performance and popular culture, to co-research and co-construct shared postdigital and dialogic positionalities with different communities (Carvajal-Leoni, Raffaghelli & Zanchin 2025). Finally, we look at how universities are perceived by community researchers (Hayes, et al., 2021, Jopling et. al., 2025, Hayes et. al., 2025a; 2025b) amid postdigital polycrisis, as intersecting inequalities are socially, politically and technologically reproduced. Universities in much of Europe are themselves in economic crisis, due to falling birth rates and corresponding drops in student numbers. They risk a ‘great resignation’ alongside the inevitable redundancies, as ‘academic anomie’ leads to experts reviewing their own positionalities in this context (Watermeyer et al., 2024). We therefore discuss an urgent need to transparently revisit how the university sector engages with existing local and global cross-sector community research ecosystems (Community Knowledge Matters 2025, Hayes et al., 2022; 2023). Here we draw parallels with a traditionally extractive global fashion industry, which is now exploring new approaches and designs for sustainability. We consider the notion of ‘re-making’ and question if universities can learn from community textile projects that re-work pre-worn materials as opportunities (English 2025). This requires universities in crisis to revisit what has been discarded from perspectives of their local and global partners, and to engage in postdigital dialogues where injustices can be surfaced. A shared re-making of our methodologies as ‘refabrication’ in civic partnership is needed to address postdigital polycrisis, now that GenAI has revealed just what is at stake, if we fail to do so. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Our methodology, evolving over several research projects, is based on facilitating a series of ‘postdigital dialogues’ between us as researchers, with participants who are also researchers, but based across sectors. Postdigital dialogue attempts to represent a diversity of viewpoints as postdigital positionalities, with minimal interpretative organisation. This emphasises shared ownership in research and the ubiquity of data-driven systems in our lives (Jopling et al., 2025). The dialogues include a collective article, which drew together local and global cross-sector perspectives written by 25 researchers on citizen research to present ‘a theoretical kaleidoscope’ (Jopling, et. al., 2025); a collaborative workshop held with 10 citizen researchers in local communities in Croatia, who described the inequities of HE research partnerships (Hayes et al, 2025b); and practical, qualitative explorations of GAI in dialogue with 51 university-based researchers in South Africa (Hayes, et. al 2025a). These multiple lenses draw attention to those who are traditionally excluded from the academic ivory tower approach toward research, recognising that such attitudes and traditions are also hard to break. This included citizen researchers being labelled as ‘non-academic’ actors, excluded from early consultation on funding bids and from most of the methodological stages of a project, and all too often left feeling that data they had collected was then ‘extracted’ from them. They described challenges in the use of exclusive research language by HE researchers and an unrealistic lag in time before crucial research findings from their data were published (Hayes et. al., 2025b). A tendency to omit diverse philosophical frameworks such as Ubuntu, as a relational, ethical perspective, missed opportunities to strengthen multicultural research practices (Hayes, et. al 2025a: 1405). Clear recommendations were made that, rather than universities presenting topics to wider community researchers and requesting data alone, there is a pressing need to acknowledge that postdigital polycrisis requires co-creative, cross-cultural approaches and agile partnerships with universities from the ground up to re-make methods that can address contextual community challenges. These findings prompted us to ask: In what ways can educational research, amid GenAI and the polycrises, disrupt extractive methodological assumptions to refabricate more equitable approaches in civic partnership research? In our presentation, we outline findings from these research dialogues and work-in-progress which explores re-making research methods via dialogic models of inclusive entrepreneurship and civic innovation, co-produced with young people with disabilities in the UK, and a co-created community workshop in the US sharing imaginative representations of citizens’ postdigital positionalities. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings We are conscious that we are researching an emerging field with rapid challenges and opportunities that arise from working at geographical, institutional and disciplinary margins. A good number of collectively authored theoretical articles now underpin this citizen-centered research, revealing rich contextual perspectives that evidence the need for re-making sustainable collaborations. Our focus looking ahead is to gather new material on practical activities in communities that will inform disruptions to the taken-for-granted fabric of Western methodological processes that are held as sacrosanct in HE. In a climate where our universities are in economic and existential crisis, we are revisiting what may have been previously discarded as remnants or waste around the edges of mainstream research publications. We are drawing inspiration from sustainability initiatives where pre-worn clothing and materials are re-worked with a diversity of input and textile remake practices that yield new opportunities. The methods used include over-dying, over-printing, embellishment, altering, splicing, piecing, patchwork and refabrication (English 2025). This is akin to our workshops that are seeking insights from local and global partners from their own postdigital positionalities to help ‘remake’ the civic role universities now need to play in a shared re-design of our methodologies for sustainable research. This ‘refabrication’ is necessary to collectively address postdigital polycrises that GenAI has revealed across all aspects of education. We can no longer pretend that European or Western universities alone are the authorities on the methods and partnerships needed. Educational research projects in the Global North may seek to address global or local inequities, but without a more structural overhaul of traditional, university-centric methodologies, there is a risk that little changes, before GAI perhaps irreversibly changes us. Therefore, our findings have important implications for inclusivity, integrity, creativity and ethics in research contexts of all kinds across Europe and beyond. Paper Learning Networks as Interschool Partnerships for Equity-Oriented Professional Learning in Secondary Education. Universiteit Hasselt, Belgium Presenting Author:Achieving equal educational opportunities (EEO) remains a persistent challenge in secondary education. While policy frameworks increasingly emphasise equity, schools often struggle to translate these ambitions into coherent and context-sensitive practices. One reason for this difficulty lies in the conceptually ambiguous and normatively charged nature of EEO, which requires ongoing interpretation, negotiation and alignment within and across schools (Bronfenbrenner, 1980; Levinson et al., 2022). Another reason concerns the limitations of traditional professional development, which frequently focuses on individual competence rather than collective and partnership-based learning (Battey & Franke, 2015; Carter Andrews & Richmond, 2019; Opfer & Pedder, 2011). This paper explores how a learning network (LN) can function as an interschool partnership that supports equity-oriented professional learning. Learning networks bring together professionals from different schools to engage in sustained dialogue, shared reflection and the exchange of practices around a common concern. As such, they can be understood as partnership structures that connect individual professional learning with organisational reflection and action. However, empirical research on how these partnerships support learning around complex concepts such as EEO remains limited. The study therefore addresses the following research questions: (1) How does participation in a learning network contribute to the professional development of educational professionals with regard to equal educational opportunities and the implementation of equity-oriented practices in their schools? (2) Which characteristics of the learning network, understood as a partnership-based professional learning arrangement, facilitate this professional learning process? The study is grounded in an ecological perspective on equal educational opportunities, which conceptualises educational inequality as emerging from interactions between individual, organisational and systemic factors (Bronfenbrenner, 1980; El Zaatari & Maalouf, 2022; Struyf et al., 2022). From this perspective, promoting EEO requires professional learning that goes beyond individual teachers and engages with shared beliefs, school culture and policy interpretation. Research on professional development for equity highlights the importance of collaboration, reflection and agency (Bancroft & Nyirenda, 2020; Carter Andrews & Richmond, 2019). In contrast to traditional, top-down formats, learning networks can be understood as partnership-based spaces for collective sense-making, in which professionals from different schools jointly explore challenges, compare practices and construct contextually relevant responses (Katz et al., 2009; Poortman et al., 2022). The findings suggest that the learning network functioned as a meaningful interschool partnership for equity-oriented professional learning. The network created available time and space for joint engagement with EEO, encouraged renewed reflection on school vision and practices, and supported collective sense-making around the concept of EEO. Interschool exchange fostered contextualised learning, reassurance and a sense of collective efficacy. Several partnership characteristics, including sustained interaction, practice-oriented exchange, school-based locations and facilitation by a moderator, were experienced as particularly supportive of professional learning. Although this study took place in Flemish secondary education, the findings offer insights into how interschool partnerships can support professional learning focused on EEO. This is relevant to various European and international educational systems facing similar challenges, such as translating policies into practice, professional fragmentation and conceptual ambiguity around equity and EEO. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The study applies an exploratory mixed-methods case-study design. The learning network involved 13 participants from eight secondary schools in Flanders, representing different educational networks and school contexts. Participants included teachers, EEO coordinators, members of pedagogical teams, pupil counsellors and school leaders. Participation was voluntary and supported by school leadership, positioning the learning network as a partnership initiative rather than a mandated programme. The learning network consisted of four consecutive sessions spread over nine months. Sessions were structured using the OASE-model (Orientation, Appreciation, Suggestions, Evaluation), which guided collective inquiry and reflection (Baeijaert, 2015). Each session combined brief theoretical input with dialogue, collaborative activities and the exchange of school-based practices. Partnership-building was further supported by rotating locations, with sessions taking place at different participating schools. Reflective visual methods such as photovoice were used to stimulate dialogue around participants’ lived experiences of EEO (Wang & Burris, 1997). Data collection included an online survey completed after the final session and semi-structured interviews with representatives from six of the eight participating schools. The survey focused on perceived professional learning and the perceived value of different network characteristics. Interview data provided deeper insight into learning processes, partnership dynamics and the translation of insights into school practices. Quantitative data were analysed descriptively due to the small sample size. Qualitative data were analysed using thematic analysis, following an iterative and inductive approach (Braun & Clarcke, 2022). Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The findings suggest that participation in the learning network supported professional learning around equal educational opportunities in several interconnected ways. The learning network provided participants with the necessary time and opportunity for collective engagement with EEO, encouraged renewed reflection on school vision and practice, and supported ongoing sense-making around a concept that participants experienced as ambiguous and challenging to operationalise. Interschool exchange enabled participants to contextualise their own practices, gain concrete ideas from other schools, and recognise shared challenges, which fostered reassurance and a sense of collective efficacy. In addition, several characteristics of the learning network were experienced as particularly supportive of professional learning, including sustained interaction over time, practice-oriented exchange, school-based locations, and facilitation by a moderator who created a safe and non-judgemental learning environment. This study contributes to research on partnerships in education by offering empirical insight into how learning networks can function as interschool partnerships that support equity-oriented professional learning. The findings highlight learning networks as relational infrastructures that connect professionals across schools and support collective interpretation and implementation of complex and contested policy goals such as equal educational opportunities. This study therefore critically examines how to establish and maintain successful partnerships to support professionals in addressing educational inequalities. In doing so, this study also acknowledges both the advantages as well as the challenges inherent to partnerships and working together. By focusing on learning processes rather than outcomes alone, the study advances understanding of how partnership-based professional learning can bridge individual professional development and school-level reflection and action. The findings suggest that learning networks are particularly valuable for addressing conceptually ambiguous and normatively loaded issues, as they create space for dialogue, negotiation and contextualisation. Paper Forging Futures Together: Partnership Dynamics and Student Identity Work in a Climate Education Collaboration 1: University of Graz, Austria; 2: MS St.Leonhard, Graz, Austria Presenting Author:Research Context and Question This paper examines partnership dynamics within the project "Stories from the Future", a Sparkling Science-funded climate education research project. The project brings together three classes from an Austrian urban middle school, university researchers, and the to co-create futures-oriented climate narratives with students aged 10-16. In this presentation we ask: How does students' science identity construction and epistemic participation in climate education develop? And what patterns of solidarity and exclusion emerge when students strategically navigate science discourse? Theoretical Framework We draw on Olitsky's (2007a, 2007b) application of Collins' (2004) interaction ritual theory to urban science education, examining partnership configurations to see if they create or constrain interaction ritual chains, the recurring patterns of emotionally charged encounters that build solidarity or produce exclusion. Olitsky demonstrates how students in urban classrooms strategically deploy science language to gain group membership, yet face barriers when institutional structures privilege particular forms of scientific discourse. Her framework illuminates three critical dimensions for our analysis: First, emotional energy and collective effervescence: How partnership interactions generate shared enthusiasm and commitment around climate futures, creating what Collins terms "interaction ritual chains" that sustain engagement across contexts. Second, solidarity and group membership: How students navigate multiple communities of practice (classroom, home/family, community) with different norms for legitimate participation. Third, strategic use of science language: How students code-switch between technical climate science terminology, narrative storytelling registers, and affective expressions of climate anxiety depending on partnership context. We extend Olitsky's urban science education focus to an Austrian example, showcasing how European school contexts have to address the diversity of their school communities. We also examine how partnership structures either amplify or marginalize diverse student voices. The "Stories from the Future" methodology, underpinned by a feminist participatory action research methodology (Prasad, 2020) asks students to imagine and narrate climate futures which in turn provides a unique lens for analysing identity work, as students claim epistemic authority through speculative knowledge. Urban Science Education and Justice Dimensions Following Olitsky's focus on urban contexts where students face intersecting marginalization, we examine how partnership structures address or reproduce educational inequalities. We focus on middle schools since they serve socioeconomically diverse urban populations where students experience climate change through housing quality, heat vulnerability, and environmental racism (Anguelovski et al., 2024; European Environment Agency, 2022; European Network Against Racism, 2022; Santamouris & Kolokotsa, 2015). Students from these contexts bring embodied knowledge of climate injustice that challenges abstract climate science framings. The partnership must negotiate whose futures matter: techno-optimistic narratives versus stories centered on loss, displacement, and structural inequality. Research Objectives Our analysis aims to: (1) Document how partnership structures shape student participation in climate science discourse; (2) Identify interaction ritual patterns that build solidarity versus exclusion across partnership spaces; (3) Examine students' strategic language use as they navigate researcher, teacher, peer, and community members; (4) Critically assess how partnerships address equity issues and whose climate futures gain legitimacy. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Research Design This study employs video-based ethnography, examining interaction patterns from three classrooms. Data collection occurred during 2024-2026 across the three classes, following students through diverse partnership interactions. Data Sources Primary data includes: (1) Video recordings of classroom sessions where students develop future stories, capturing micro-level interactions, language use, and emotional displays; (2) Video documentation of student presentations to different audiences, showing how students reframe climate knowledge for non-school contexts; (3) Informal interviews with students reflecting on their experiences navigating different partnership spaces; (4) Researcher field notes documenting partnership meetings and observations; (5) Student-generated artifacts including the students’ future stories, notes in their research diaries and multimodal presentations. Analytical Framework Our analysis proceeds in three phases: Phase 1: Micro-interaction analysis - Following Olitsky's approach, we code video segments for markers of interaction ritual success/failure: mutual focus of attention, shared mood, emotional energy shifts, use of collective symbols, and boundary-marking behaviours. We attend to moments when students deploy science language strategically, shifting register based on audience, claiming or disclaiming expertise, invoking authoritative sources. Phase 2: Identity performance analysis - We examine how students position themselves within science discourse across contexts: as learners, experts, activists, storytellers, or critics. Analysis identifies repertoires of self-presentation and moments of identity negotiation or conflict. Phase 3: Partnership structure analysis - We map how different partnership configurations (researcher-led workshops, teacher-facilitated classrooms, peer-to-peer exchanges) create distinct participation frameworks with different rules for legitimate engagement. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Our analysis reveals three significant patterns: First, partnership structures that position students as knowledge producers (rather than recipients) generate high-intensity interaction rituals characterized by sustained mutual focus, collective effervescence, and positive emotional energy. Community presentation events particularly exemplify this, as students experience themselves as legitimate climate science educators. However, these moments depend on careful scaffolding, when partnerships thrust students into expert roles. Without adequate preparation, interaction rituals fail, producing anxiety and suspicion rather than solidarity and trust. Second, students demonstrate strategic use of science language across contexts. They deploy technical terminology and causal explanations, performing scientifically literate identities. They also foreground narrative and emotional registers, using personal stories to build connection. Additional complexity emerges as students navigate not just science discourse but linguistic and cultural differences. Some students strategically "translate" climate science into locally meaningful terms; others struggle when there is a demand for climate code-switching without explicit support. Third, and most critically, partnership configurations reveal persistent patterns of inclusion and exclusion around whose futures matter. Students whose communities face immediate climate injustice (heat vulnerability, environmental racism, displacement risk) struggle to voice futures centred on loss, critique, or structural transformation. We expect that partnership spaces that successfully disrupt these patterns create explicit forums for examining whose knowledge counts and which futures are deemed plausible within climate science discourse. Our findings extend Olitsky's interaction ritual framework beyond urban classrooms to foreground European partnership contexts, demonstrating how partnership structures operate as meso-level mechanisms shaping micro-interactions. The research contributes to understanding how research practice partnerships can be designed to support more equitable epistemic participation while remaining vigilant about power dynamics.
