Paper Beyond Topics: A Multi-Layered Classification Framework for Mapping Educational Research 1: Gebze Technical University, Turkey (Türkiye); 2: Istanbul Technical University Presenting Author:Educational research is a systematic field of inquiry that examines educational and learning processes as well as the actors, interactions, and institutions that shape them (American Educational Research Association [AERA], n.d.). It spans impact-oriented evaluations for planning/policy and qualitative inquiry into sociocultural norms and contexts (Postlethwaite, 2005). Yet UNESCO highlights a persistent gap between the capacity of educational research to generate evidence and the uptake of that evidence in policy and practice across many contexts (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization [UNESCO], n.d.). As the volume of educational research grows, classification and labelling systems constitute a key infrastructure for making the literature findable and comparable; reflected in missions to strengthen research–policy linkages (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development [OECD], n.d.). Knowledge organization systems (e.g., taxonomies, thesauri/controlled vocabularies, and classification schemes) provide a shared representational language that supports discovery and reduces terminological fragmentation, enabling related work to be brought together rather than dispersed across divergent naming practices (National Information Standards Organization [NISO], 2010). In education, controlled vocabularies such as the ERIC Thesaurus provide established examples of standardising the subject representation of education-related publications, thereby facilitating access to and review of the literature (Pollard, Hellrich-Dawson, & Beck, 2015). Classification can therefore be understood as a structural instrument that supports not only the quantitative expansion of educational research but also its development as a cumulatively readable knowledge domain. In educational research, this “structural instrument” is evident not only at the level of database indexing but also in infrastructures for systematic reviews and evidence mapping formats (e.g., keywording-based registers/maps and evidence gap maps), as well as in clearinghouse-type evidence products (EPPI-Centre, 2001; Institute of Education Sciences, n.d.; International Initiative for Impact Evaluation [3ie], n.d.). Yet while these approaches largely operate at the level of topics and evidence, they often leave opaque how knowing travels into acting—in other words, how educational claims connect to assumptions about reality and to the aims and values that shape practice and policy. Making education’s epistemological, ontological, and praxiological/axiological layers visible in an integrated and traceable way both addresses this opacity and enables a more holistic reading of the scope of educational research: any educational question simultaneously touches on knowledge (epistemology), a view of reality and the person–world relationship (ontology), and an aims/values/action horizon (praxiological/axiological orientation). Paradigm debates make this entanglement explicit by emphasising that ontological and epistemological assumptions must be considered together with a value-related dimension and that inquiry is not value-free (Guba & Lincoln, 1994; Guba & Lincoln, 2005). Yet within established classification and mapping approaches, these philosophical layers often remain at the level of paradigm discussion; in particular, the axiological/praxiological dimension is less consistently translated into systematic representation (Laitsch, n.d.). As a result, large-scale classifications of the educational research literature rarely allow the integrated tracing of these three layers. The aim of this study is to interrogate the “scope” of educational studies by proposing a multi-layered classification approach that brings epistemological, ontological, and praxiological/axiological dimensions together, making scope visible not only through topic headings but also through conceptions of knowledge, views of educational reality, and aims/values/action horizons. The study discusses the extent to which these dimensions can be traced for classification when they are stated explicitly, implied, or left unarticulated in research texts. Research Questions
Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study develops a classification framework intended to make the “scope” of educational research traceable through epistemological–ontological assumptions and praxiological/axiological orientations. Positioned within a qualitative paradigm, it employs document analysis to systematically examine research texts (Bowen, 2009) and draws on content analysis principles that operationalize textual evidence through rule-governed unitization, coding, and inference (Krippendorff, 2018). The dataset comprises master’s and doctoral theses in architectural education in Türkiye published up to 31 December 2025. Theses were identified through keyword-based searches in the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) National Thesis Center database (YÖK, n.d.), using the search terms “architectural education” and “architecture and education.” Retrieved records were consolidated into a candidate pool of 560 theses. Inclusion criteria were: (i) a direct and substantive focus on architectural education/pedagogy, (ii) postgraduate thesis type, and (iii) accessibility of at least basic textual components (minimum: title and abstract) required for coding. Exclusion criteria were: proficiency in art theses, an interior architecture focus, studies shifting away from an educational focus toward analyses of specific periods/figures/buildings, and works with only tangential relevance to architectural education. Applying these criteria yielded a final dataset of 234 theses. The unit of analysis is the thesis. Each thesis is mapped through a multi-layered system consisting of ten categories, and indicators in each category are coded as explicit, implicit, or absent. The framework integrates three complementary labeling logics: (i) predefined/fixed labels standardize dimensions such as strategic objectives and education type/organizational level, derived from national and international policy and professional reference documents; (ii) dynamic/inductive labels capture the thesis’s thematic approach, object of analysis, research context, and data sources as concept clusters emerging from the corpus; and (iii) semi-structured labels enable comparative recording of research type, research output type, data analysis method, and the analytic basis underpinning interpretation. Coding proceeds in two stages. First-round labeling is conducted on titles and abstracts. In the second stage, a pilot coding–revision cycle is used to refine category definitions and the label lexicon. Ambiguous cases are documented through decision memos and an example bank; coding decisions are linked to textual evidence to preserve an audit trail. Consistency is monitored through periodic re-coding checks. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The study is expected to produce a multi-layered map of postgraduate research in architectural education in Türkiye (n = 234 theses, up to 31 December 2025) by applying a ten-category classification framework with explicit/implicit/absent coding. The resulting dataset will generate (i) descriptive distributions across categories (e.g., research types, data sources, analytic bases, and output types), and (ii) cross-category patterning that makes visible how theses articulate (or leave unarticulated) epistemological, ontological, and praxiological/axiological dimensions beyond topic labels. Analytically, the mapping is expected to reveal recurring configurations—for instance, which kinds of studies most frequently make their epistemological stance explicit, which rely on implicit assumptions, and where praxiological/axiological orientations (e.g., guiding policy/practice, improvement/transformative aims, recommendation-making) remain systematically under-specified. These patterns will be used to identify concentrated agendas as well as “silent zones” in the research landscape, supporting a more relational reading of the field’s conceptual and methodological diversity. Methodologically, the application is expected to refine the label lexicon and category definitions through documented decision rules, memos, and an example bank, producing a more robust and reusable classification instrument. At the same time, the study will explicitly discuss limitations of transferability: the framework is piloted within a disciplinary/professional education domain, and some predefined label sets foreground strategic expectations derived from institutional and professional reference documents. While this may constrain direct generalization, the underlying layered logic—grounded in educational philosophy—will be discussed as adaptable to other education-research corpora by recalibrating the predefined components to field-specific strategic frameworks. Paper Open Citation Data for Educational Research 1: DIPF | Leibniz Institute for Research and Information in Education, Germany; 2: GESIS – Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences, Germany Presenting Author:Despite increasing commitments to open science, citation data in educational research remain largely fragmented, incomplete, and frequently locked behind proprietary systems. Commercial citation databases such as Web of Science and Scopus not only restrict access through subscription-based models but also provide limited coverage of educational research output (Moed, 2005). This lack of coverage is particularly pronounced for national publication contexts, such as German-language educational research, which remains underrepresented in major commercial indices (Heinze et al., 2019). In response, open database providers such as OpenAlex (Priem et al., 2022) have emerged as alternatives to commercial systems, aiming to expand disciplinary breadth and geographical inclusivity in research output coverage. Nevertheless, educational research poses specific challenges for open citation infrastructures. The field is characterized by a high degree of heterogeneity in publication types, languages, national research traditions, and dissemination channels. Alongside journal articles, monographs, edited volumes, research reports, and practice-oriented publications play a central role in scholarly communication. However, citation data for these formats are particularly sparse or inconsistently represented in existing open infrastructures. As a consequence, citation-based discovery, bibliometric analysis, and systematic knowledge mapping in educational research remain severely constrained, limiting both analytical insight and the transparency of research evaluation processes. To address these limitations, federated research infrastructures increasingly aim to contribute publication and reference data to an open, distributed research information ecosystem. Within this broader transformation of scholarly infrastructures, open citation data have emerged as a key component. This development is closely linked to current debates on the reform of research assessment practices, as reflected in initiatives such as the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA) (coara.org) and the Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information (barcelona-declaration.org). Complementary initiatives, including the Initiative for Open Citations (i4oc.org), specifically promote the availability of citation relationships as open, machine-readable, and interoperable data, thereby reducing structural dependencies on commercial providers. The project Open Citation Data for Educational Research (Weimer et al., 2025) builds directly on these initiatives and aims to integrate open reference and citation data into FIS Bildung, the core reference system for educational literature in German-speaking countries. FIS Bildung cooperates with 30 partner institutions that collect, index, and curate relevant educational research publications. It is embedded within the Fachportal Pädagogik, a subject-specific search portal that provides unified access to publications from a wide range of national and international databases, including ERIC. The following contribution introduces the OFFZIB project, outlines its conceptual and infrastructural foundations, and discusses the connectivity and effectiveness of its objectives in contributing to a sustainable European and international solution for open citation data in educational research. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used In a first phase of the ongoing project, the aim is to apply open-source reference extraction tools (like Grobid, Cermine, and AnyStyle) for generating reference data from educational research publications in peDOCS, an open access repository and part of FIS Bildung. Different approaches were systematically tested on three empirically grounded document samples drawn from the peDOCS, representing different publication types and subdisciplines. The evaluation focused on reference detection accuracy, errors and the quality of extracted reference elements such as authors, titles, and source information. In a next step, the extracted data will be matched against references metadata from relevant databases, such as ERIC and OpenAlex. Based on these results, decisions are made regarding a common representation of references and their metadata, with the aim of ensuring interoperability and facilitating data sharing with other infrastructure providers. To support this process, researchers and infrastructure stakeholders in educational research are consulted in order to discuss the resulting citation data corpus and to assess its validity and usefulness for educational research evaluation and bibliometric analyses. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The OFFZIB project aims at contributing to the development of a sustainable open citation infrastructure for educational research by reducing structural dependencies on commercial platforms and expanding the coverage of reference and citation data beyond journal-centric publication models. By systematically evaluating open-source reference extraction workflows and integrating the resulting citation data into established research information systems, the project addresses core limitations in the visibility and accessibility of educational research output. The first findings demonstrate both the current potential and the remaining challenges of generating open citation data for a heterogeneous and multilingual field. Addressing these gaps is essential for enabling fairer and more transparent citation data in education. By embedding open citation data into existing infrastructures and aligning with international open science and research assessment initiatives, the project supports the long-term goal of improving the transparency, comparability, and societal relevance of educational research evaluation. Paper Mapping European Educational Research: Thematic Clusters and Trends of Horizon Projects DIPF | Leibniz Institute for Research and Information in Education Presenting Author:Research fields such as the field of European educational research encompass many different constituting factors. Those factors include its personnel (i.e. authors), research associations (i.e. EERA, EARLI, WERA and the multitude of national/regional associations), institutions, conferences (such as ECER) and many more. The increasing projectification of research and the funding programme logics that accompany it further increase the complexity of the field. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used As a basis for the analyses, we downloaded all relevant information of the “Framework Programmes for Research and Technological Development” FP 5 to 9 (FP8: Horizon 2020, FP9: Horizon Europe) via data.europa.eu. FP1 to FP4 were not downloaded, as they started and finished before the first data included in EduTopics. All data on all projects was transferred into a single database with the variables “Project ID”, “Project Description” (i.e. abstract), “Country” (multiple entries for most projects) and “Category”. We aimed to identify the authors of the FP/Horizon projects by scraping publications linked to each project as well as the file listing the contributors of each FP/Horizon proposal. In the “Category”-variable, the research area of each project is saved hierarchically, for example for an educational FP project on didactics, the variable value is “social sciences >> educational sciences >> didactics”. This resulted in a total of n = 86,256 database entries with n = 21,194 designated as “social sciences” (ca. 24.6%). Of all projects on social sciences, only 2.7% (n = 564) were categorised as “educational sciences”. Subsequently, for those n = 564 projects, the descriptions, authors and countries were extracted and cleaned for further analyses. Three major analyses were conducted: 1) The distribution of FP/Horizon projects across countries was determined including analyses of cross-country collaborations at FP/Horizon. 2) The authors of FP/Horizon projects were matched to the authors contributing to the various conferences included in EduTopics. 3) The thematic clusters and trends of FP/Horizon projects were identified by using the corpus mapping function of EduTopics which applies the topic models of EduTopics to previously unmapped texts. This enabled comparisons between the thematic distributions of the conference data in EduTopics to the thematic distribution of FP/Horizon projects. Additionally, for the main resulting topics of FP/Horizon, trend analyses were conducted to identify whether the thematic trends of the conferences mirror the trends of FP/Horizon projects or whether differences can be identified. We also attempted to identify contributions potentially related to FP/Horizon projects by matching authors across datasets and then determining which conference contributions were thematically closest to the corresponding project descriptions. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings As EduTopics will be updated soon in 2026 and the project is currently a work-in-progress, exact distributions or figures cannot be reported yet. First results indicate though, that the focus of topics between FP/Horizon and the conference data differs substantially, with Horizon 2020 projects ranking high in topics such as digital technology, sustainability, and social justice and inequality. In comparison, for ECER in general, digital technology only achieves rank 26, sustainability rank 43, and social justice and inequality rank 37. In total, this project enables a first comparison between European research funding and European conferences on educational research. The findings improve our understanding of the ways in which funding patterns and overarching research trends may be connected, be it through a shared Zeitgeist, through increases in funding as research interest grows, or, conversely, through shifts in research interest following changes in funding levels. Paper Bridging Academic Knowledge and Educational Practice: The Evolving Role of Turkish Education Journals in the Contemporary Knowledge Ecosystem Pamukkale University, Turkey (Türkiye) Presenting Author:This study investigates how education journals in Türkiye contribute to the circulation, accessibility, and practical uptake of academic knowledge in a rapidly changing global knowledge ecosystem. The research is motivated by the observation that education research increasingly operates within an environment shaped by open science mandates, international indexation pressures, digitalisation, artificial intelligence assisted publishing processes, and shifting expectations concerning the societal relevance of scholarly work. Although education journals serve as key mediators between knowledge production and its potential users, little empirical evidence exists regarding how they conceptualise and enact this role particularly in contexts where academic performance regimes and research evaluation systems strongly influence editorial practice. The overarching research question guiding this study is: How do Turkish education journals facilitate, hinder, or unintentionally reshape the transfer of academic knowledge to educational practitioners? The conceptual framework integrates a micro–mezo–macro analytical model, which allows for a multilayered understanding of the knowledge ecosystem:
This framework positions journals not merely as neutral dissemination channels but as actors embedded within power-laden, policy-driven, and technologically mediated knowledge infrastructures. The study engages directly with European debates on open research, the role of scholarly communication in addressing societal challenges, and concerns about the fragmentation of scientific knowledge due to increasing performativity pressures. In line with ECER’s 2026 theme on “Knowing and Acting,” the study critically interrogates how evolving knowledge conditions marked by digitalisation, big data, generative AI, and poly-crises shape the production and utilisation of educational knowledge. The findings aim to contribute to international conversations about how scholarly publishing can better support evidence-informed educational practice and democratic access to knowledge. Through an empirical examination of the Turkish context, the research offers insights relevant beyond national borders. Many European education systems face similar tensions between academic prestige-oriented publishing and demands for practitioner-oriented, accessible, and actionable research. By situating Türkiye within this broader landscape, the study provides a comparative perspective on how national publication ecosystems interact with global knowledge infrastructures and shape the flow of educational knowledge. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study employs a multiple case study design, focusing on five Turkish education journals selected through purposive sampling based on the following criteria: peer-reviewed and regularly published, open-access, indexed in TR Dizin and/or Scopus/Web of Science, and representing diverse missions. Data were collected from three complementary sources: Semi-structured Interviews (N = 20): 5 Editors-in-chief or associate editors from the selected journals, 5 Experienced reviewers representing different subfields, 10 Teachers from diverse school types and regions, selected to capture variation in research engagement Interview protocols explored perceptions of the purpose of educational research, strategies to enhance practitioner relevance, barriers to knowledge uptake, and the perceived impact of open science and publishing policies. Document Analysis: Journal policy documents including Aims & Scope, author guidelines, editorial policies, ethical statements, and open science declarations were analysed to identify stated commitments related to accessibility, societal relevance, and practitioner engagement. Content Analysis of Recent Issues: All articles published by the five journals within the last 12 months were analysed using a structured coding scheme capturing; article type, methodological approach, thematic focus, presence and quality of practitioner-oriented recommendations, clarity and accessibility of language, existence of plain-language or practice-oriented summaries. Analytic Strategy The study utilised the Braun & Clarke (2006) thematic analysis approach for interview and document data. Content analysis results were integrated into the thematic map to assess the alignment or misalignment between journal discourse and publishing practice. Findings were synthesised across the micro–mezo–macro levels to develop a systemic understanding of academic–practitioner knowledge flows. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The findings indicate a persistent and multilayered disconnect between academic knowledge production and its practical uptake by teachers. At the micro level, most teachers reported limited awareness of academic journals, difficulties accessing research, and challenges interpreting theory-heavy articles. Teachers tended to rely on informal digital sources social media, peer communities, personal networks rather than scholarly publications. At the mezo level, journal policies generally emphasised broad readership and societal contribution; however, actual publication practices revealed minimal practitioner engagement. Content analysis demonstrated that only a small proportion of articles included actionable recommendations or used accessible language. Editors attributed this gap to pressures from international indexation systems, expectations for methodological sophistication, and the perceived low prestige of practice-oriented submissions. At the macro level, national research evaluation frameworks and international publishing norms reinforced an incentive system that privileges theoretical, quantitatively oriented, and internationally appealing work over practitioner-focused research. This structural environment significantly shapes editorial decision-making and limits journals’ capacity to act as bridges between academia and practice. Collectively, these findings illustrate that the academic–practitioner divide is systemic rather than individual, shaped by interlocking institutional, political, and epistemic forces. The study calls for more explicit policy support for practitioner-oriented publishing, the adoption of plain-language summaries, the inclusion of dedicated practice sections in journals, and stronger collaboration between researchers and educators. By analysing Türkiye as a case embedded within global knowledge infrastructures, the study contributes to international debates on how scholarly publishing can better support evidence-informed educational improvement.
