Paper Vision, Coherence, and Connections to Practice in Teacher Education: Perspectives from Student Teachers and Teacher Educators in Iceland 1: University of Iceland; 2: University of Akureyri Presenting Author:Research on teacher education shows that programme quality depends not only on curriculum content, but also on the clarity of programme vision, the coherence of learning experiences, and the extent to which programmes are grounded in practice. A clear and shared vision of good teaching within a programme provides direction for teacher learning, coherence supports alignment across coursework and field experiences, and connections to practice enable student teachers to enact theoretical ideas in classroom contexts (Darling-Hammond et al., 2005; Hammerness, 2014). Without such integration, student teachers often struggle to connect theory and practice and may revert to traditional models of teaching from their own schooling. Over the past decades, research from the United States and Europe has highlighted that high-quality teacher preparation requires sustained opportunities for practice-based learning that are closely connected to the work of teaching (Ball & Cohen, 1999, Grossman et al., 2009; Jenset et al., 2018). When teacher education is deliberately grounded in practice, student teachers are more likely to enact ambitious instructional practices and support student learning (Darling-Hammond et al., 2017; Feiman-Nemser, 2001). Conversely, when programmes prioritise reading and discussion about teaching over opportunities to practise and enact teaching, this may limit the extent to which programme visions are realised in classroom practic. Teacher education in Iceland has undergone substantial reform, including the introduction of a five-year master’s degree, course-based master’s routes, and a paid internship, all intended to strengthen connections between theory and practice. Yet little empirical research has examined how these ambitions are experienced across institutional roles.
The objective of this study is to examine how programme vision and coherence are a enacted in Icelandic teacher education, and how these features shape opportunities to connect theory and practice, from the perspectives of both student teachers and teacher educators. The following questions guided the study:
Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Drawing on data from the Monitoring and Improving Teacher Education (MITE) project, a mixed-methods design was used to investigate programme vision, coherence, and connections to practice from multiple institutional perspectives. Survey data captured student teachers’ perceptions, while interviews with teacher educators and programme leaders provided more detailed insight into how these features are conceptualised and enacted. Survey data were collected from 276 master’s-level student teachers at the University of Iceland and the University of Akureyri using an instrument adapted from the international Coherence and Assignments in Teacher Education (CATE) study. Survey items examined perceived clarity of programme vision, coherence across courses and field placements, and opportunities to connect theory and practice. In addition, semi-structured interviews with programme leaders and teacher educators explored how vision, coherence, and practice-based learning are conceptualised, supported, and enacted within programmes. Quantitative and qualitative data were analysed separately and integrated during interpretation Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Student teachers generally reported a clear sense of programme vision. Survey findings indicate that around two-thirds of student teachers perceived their programmes as having a coherent pedagogical direction that supported learning over time. Many described encountering consistent perspectives on teaching and learning across courses. These responses , suggest that the programme vision was visible from the student perspective. However, this perceived clarity was not consistently supported by structural connections within the curriculum. More than 70% of student teachers disagreed that instructors explicitly referred to or built on ideas from other courses, and a similar proportion reported that recurring topics were not explored in increasing depth. These findings suggest that while programme vision may be broadly understood, coherence across coursework and practice is uneven and often implicit rather than intentionally designed. Interviews with teacher educators and programme leaders both reinforced and complicated this picture. Teacher educators described strong personal commitments to linking theory and practice, yet many reported limited oversight of the programme as a whole and few opportunities for collective planning across courses within the programme. In contrast to student teachers’ perceptions of a shared and coherent vision, teacher educators were less certain that such a vision was explicitly articulated or collectively enacted at the institutional level. Overall, the findings point to a partially shared programme vision and highlight the need for stronger programme level oversight and increased collaboration among faculty to strengthen coherence and better connect coursework and practice. Paper Preparing for Interdisciplinary Education in Initial Teacher Education: A Systematic Review of Formative Mechanisms 1: Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Chile; 2: Universidad Alberto Hurtado, Chile Presenting Author:Despite the growing prominence of interdisciplinary education in international debates related to twenty-first-century skills (Scott, 2015; UNESCO, 2022), curriculum structures (Dussel, 2020), and teacher professionalism (McGrath, 2023), research on initial teacher education (ITE) remains fragmented in explaining how future teachers are prepared for interdisciplinary work. While existing studies and reviews have documented benefits, challenges, competences, and curricular approaches associated with interdisciplinarity (Bourke et al., 2022; Tonnetti & Lentillon-Kaestner, 2023; Wang & Sang, 2024), less attention has been paid to the formative mechanisms through which these orientations are produced, mediated, and sustained within teacher education programs. This gap is particularly salient in secondary education, where ITE faces the challenge of preparing future teachers for interdisciplinary work within training contexts shaped by a strongly disciplinary organization of knowledge (Flores, 2016; Bourke et al., 2022). By synthesizing empirical research through a systematic literature review, this study reframes the field by shifting the analytical focus from outcomes and models to the mechanisms that structure interdisciplinary preparation in ITE. The literature has documented persistent tensions between interdisciplinary goals and existing formative structures. Recent systematic reviews depict that interdisciplinary initiatives frequently encounter obstacles such as teachers’ insecurity when working beyond disciplinary boundaries, difficulties in establishing shared goals, and assessing integrated learning outcomes, and limited opportunities for sustained collaboration across subject areas (Tonnetti & Lentillon-Kaestner, 2023). These challenges are not confined to school contexts, but also emerge within initial teacher education (ITE), where programs often reproduce discipline-centered logics, offering limited integrative experiences and weak orientations toward collaborative work (Imbernón, 2019). Beyond documenting these challenges, recent reviews have contributed to systematizing different approaches to interdisciplinary education and curriculum integration, albeit with a partial focus on ITE. Tonnetti and Lentillon-Kaestner (2023) primarily examine school-level practices; Bourke et al. (2022) identify integrated curricular approaches within ITE programs; Wang and Sang (2024) synthesize research on teachers’ interdisciplinary competences; and Agudelo Rodríguez et al. (2024) characterize models of integration in STEM teacher education. Taken together, these reviews tend to emphasize outcomes, competences, or models, rather than systematically examining the formative mechanisms through which ITE programs configure opportunities for interdisciplinary preparation. As a result, the field lacks an integrated understanding of how such preparation is produced and mediated within teacher education, limiting both theoretical accumulation and the development of more coherent policy and programmatic responses. To contribute to this discussion, the question framing this literature review is: What mechanisms have been adopted by initial teacher education programs to prepare future secondary school teachers for interdisciplinary teaching? The concept of mechanism is used here as an analytical category to identify the factors, processes, and conditions that mediate professional teacher learning (Sims et al., 2021). This notion allows ITE to move beyond the description of isolated practices and analyze how these opportunities are configured in specific institutional contexts. From a theoretical perspective, this review brings together two complementary approaches. On the one hand, it draws on contributions from the field of educational interdisciplinarity, which conceptualize the integration of knowledge as a process that goes beyond thematic juxtaposition and requires the reorganization of disciplinary knowledge for pedagogical and curricular purposes (Klein, 2017). On the other hand, it draws on Bernstein’s theory of pedagogical recontextualization (2000), which conceives ITE as a space where academic knowledge is selected, transformed, and hierarchized in accordance with institutional purposes. This articulation is particularly relevant in contexts where teacher education is shaped by global reform dynamics that reconfigure curricular structures and professional expectations. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study adopts a systematic literature review design aimed at identifying and analyzing formative mechanisms through which initial teacher education (ITE) programs prepare for interdisciplinary education at the secondary level. The review followed the PRISMA framework (Moher et al., 2015) to ensure transparency and methodological rigor throughout the process. The literature search was conducted in April 2025 using two bibliographic databases: Web of Science (Core Collection) and Scopus, selected for their coverage of peer-reviewed educational research. The search strategy, developed in English, combined keywords related to two main dimensions: (a) interdisciplinary education and integrated curriculum, and (b) initial teacher education. Search strings included terms such as “interdisciplinary teaching”, “interdisciplinary education”, and “integrated curriculum”, combined with “initial teacher education”, “teacher education”, and “pre-service teachers”. No restrictions were applied regarding publication year or language. The selection process was guided by predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Studies were included if they: (1) were empirical and published in peer-reviewed journals; (2) addressed the preparation of teachers for interdisciplinary education; (3) focused on initial teacher education; and (4) referred explicitly to secondary education. Studies were excluded if they: (1) did not address interdisciplinary education as an object of analysis; (2) focused on in-service teacher development or other stages of professional learning; (3) addressed primary, early childhood, or non-university teacher education; or (4) were theoretical papers, conceptual essays, or literature reviews. The initial search yielded 1,819 records (1,027 from Scopus and 792 from Web of Science). After removing duplicates, 1,485 records were screened by title and abstract. Full texts were retrieved for 183 studies, of which 61 met all inclusion criteria and constituted the final corpus. The selection process was documented using a PRISMA flow diagram. Data extraction included national context, disciplinary fields, research design, participants, and formative settings. Findings were synthesized through inductive thematic analysis (Nowell et al., 2017), enabling the identification of recurring patterns and divergences in the formative mechanisms documented across studies. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The results show that preparation for interdisciplinary education in ITE is characterized by fragmentation, uneven development, and weak articulation rather than by coherent or consolidated models. Furthermore, interdisciplinary preparation is commonly addressed through isolated initiatives, without being articulated as a sustained or program-wide dimension of teacher education. Within this fragmented landscape, the analysis distinguishes four types of formative mechanisms through which interdisciplinary preparation is addressed: curricular experiences, re-signification of the professional role, development of specific competences, and institutional conditions. These mechanisms capture recurring ways interdisciplinary education is approached across heterogeneous contexts and research designs. Most importantly, their identification does not imply that they systematically coexist within teacher education programs, nor that they form coherent or integrated formative arrangements. Empirical studies frequently document curricular mechanisms, typically materialized in specific courses or integrative assignments. While these initiatives often generate meaningful learning experiences. Mechanisms related to the re-signification of the professional role appear mainly in studies emphasizing collaboration, reflection, or identity work that challenges discipline-bound conceptions of teaching, yet they are seldom supported by stable curricular or institutional structures. Competence-oriented mechanisms focus on epistemic, pedagogical, or collaborative capacities required for interdisciplinary education. Finally, institutional mechanisms shape the conditions under which interdisciplinary preparation becomes possible or constrained, with organizational arrangements, disciplinary structures, and forms of curricular recognition often operating as limiting rather than enabling factors. Taken together, these findings suggest that interdisciplinary preparation in ITE is better understood as a field of partial and unevenly connected formative practices than as a coherent system. The relationships among mechanisms remain largely potential and contingent on local configurations, underscoring the need for future research that examines how such mechanisms may interact over time and across institutional contexts to support more sustained approaches to interdisciplinary education in teacher preparation. Paper The Mediating Effect of Culturally Responsive Teaching Readiness on the Relationships Between Self-Efficacy and Outcome Expectancy 1: Bernardino B. The diversity of student populations requires teachers to adopt methods that reflect students’ cultural backgrounds and lived experiences. In this context, self-efficacy is key: teachers’ belief in their ability to influence student outcomes. Outcome expectancy, teachers’ expectations about their teaching, predicts educational success (Bandura, 1997). The link between these two factors may not be direct. Teachers’ readiness to engage in CRT may mediate the relationship between CRT and teacher efficacy. Self-efficacy can influence readiness, which in turn affects outcome expectancy. Self-efficacy, the belief in one’s ability to perform a specific task, is essential in shaping teaching practices. Teachers’ culturally responsive teaching self-efficacy (CRTSE) influences their confidence in classroom management and their ability to apply diverse teaching strategies. Culturally responsive teaching outcome expectancy (CRTOE) is closely linked to teachers' beliefs about the outcomes of their efforts. Mediation means CRTSE may first shape a teacher’s readiness (CRTR) to apply CRT. This increased readiness then leads to stronger beliefs in positive student outcomes. Thus, the relationship between CRTSE and CRTOE may be transmitted through CRTR. CRTR reflects a teacher's preparedness to implement CRT practices effectively in diverse classrooms (Gay, 2010). In the Philippines, the Department of Education (DepEd) Order No. 32, series of 2017, established a Gender-Responsive Basic Education Policy. The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) also stresses gender and cultural awareness in teacher training (CMO #01, s. of 2015). These policies prepare teachers for diverse classrooms. This study aimed to determine the following: (a) preservice teachers’ CRTSE beliefs, (b) their CRTOE beliefs, (c) their CRTR levels, (d) if significant links exist among CRTR, CRTSE, and CRTOE, and (e) how CRTR mediates the CRTSE-CRTOE relationship. This research views the self-efficacy theory (Bandura, 1997) and CRT pedagogy (Gay, 2000). Bandura’s self-efficacy, rooted in social learning theory, is crucial for understanding teacher beliefs (Malo-Juvera et al., 2018). Teacher self-efficacy is the confidence teachers have in their ability to promote student achievement, to overcome teaching challenges, and to build resilience (Gibson & Dembo, 1984). Effective teaching requires knowledge, skills, and belief in one’s ability to apply them. Teacher self-efficacy predicts how preservice teachers implement culturally responsive practices after coursework (Bandura, 1997). Research shows that higher teacher self-efficacy leads to better decisions for engaging challenging students (Malo-Juvera et al., 2018). Fostering self-efficacy in specific domains, such as CRT, enables preservice teachers (PSTs) to enhance their competencies (Cruz et al., 2020). They need to understand what builds self-efficacy. Bandura (1997) identified four main sources of self-efficacy: physiological and emotional states, vicarious experiences, mastery experiences, and verbal or social persuasion. Actual teaching experiences in small- and whole-group settings matter (Clark, 2020). These allow preservice teachers to evaluate their effectiveness. Observing student progress further boosts teachers' confidence in their teaching success. Likewise, Bandura (1997) highlights the collaborative nature of verbal and social persuasion. PSTs build community and self-efficacy through feedback from mentors, cooperating teachers, supervisors, and peers during field experiences (Clark, 2020). Understanding these sources will guide the analysis of interviews. This will help identify what participants see as integral to their sense of community and to their growth in self-efficacy. Despite a strong theory, a gap persists in research on CRT readiness as a mediating variable. This gap is evident in the Philippine context. Existing literature mainly examines Western or urbanized Asian settings. Questions remain about how CRT readiness influences teaching effectiveness in other environments. This study addressed that gap by exploring the mediating role of CRT readiness among preservice teachers in Philippine sectarian schools. In these settings, cultural values are integral to the educational mission. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study employed path analysis to investigate the mediating role of CRTR in the relationship between self-efficacy and outcome expectancy among preservice teachers. Path analysis is appropriate in this context because it examines both direct and indirect relationships among variables, thereby clarifying the mediating effect of CRTR between CRTSE and CTROE (Baron & Kenny, 1986). Path analysis is a statistical technique used to examine both direct and indirect relationships among observed variables. A direct relationship exists when CRTSE directly influences CTROE, whereas an indirect relationship occurs when the effect is transmitted through a third variable, such as CRTR. The present study evaluates whether CRTR mediates the association between CRTSE and CTROE. Path analysis examines multiple direct and indirect relationships at once, offering deeper insights than standard regression. While regression may show no direct correlation, path analysis shows that a predictor can have an indirect effect on an outcome. This method uses multiple regression models within a theoretical framework to assess all hypothesized links between predictors and outcomes, making it especially suitable for complex communication phenomena. Respondents were preservice teachers enrolled in sectarian higher education institutions. Inclusion criteria were third- or fourth-year PSTs pursuing a Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English and currently in a teaching internship. Participation was voluntary and required informed consent. Only completed surveys were analyzed to ensure data reliability and validity. The final sample of 100 respondents provided a basis for meaningful and generalizable findings. The instruments employed comprised (a) CRTR, adapted from Karatas and Oral (2017); (b) CRTSE; and (c) CRTOE, the latter two created by Siwatu (2006). CRTSE and CRTOE measure preservice teachers’ self-efficacy and beliefs regarding the outcomes of culturally responsive pedagogy. These instruments are grounded in prior research that identifies key competencies in culturally responsive teaching, such as cultural awareness, adaptive instruction, minimizing cultural mismatches, fostering identity, and cautious interpretation of test results (Siwatu, 2005). The self-efficacy and outcome expectancy measures encompass curriculum and instruction, classroom management, student assessment, and cultural enrichment (Siwatu, 2005, 2007). Descriptive statistics, including mean and standard deviation, were calculated for self-efficacy, outcome expectancy, and readiness for culturally responsive teaching. Pearson correlation coefficients were computed to analyze the relationships among these variables. Path analysis was conducted to determine whether readiness for culturally responsive teaching mediated the relationship between self-efficacy and outcome expectancy. The significance of the mediation effect was evaluated using the Sobel test. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings PSTs demonstrated high levels of self-efficacy in applying culturally responsive practices. The findings indicate that respondents expressed confidence in their ability to employ a range of teaching strategies and integrate students’ cultural backgrounds into the educational process. Their self-efficacy appears to be influenced by their perceived competence in contextualizing lessons based on student diversity. However, results also suggest that competencies in developing personal relationships with students require further enhancement. PSTs strongly believed that their actions as educators would result in favorable outcomes. They believed that culturally responsive strategies, such as building trust and valuing students’ cultural heritage, facilitate improvements in student learning. Furthermore, they believe that instructional practices connecting to prior knowledge are effective. Their outcome expectancy is shaped by the belief that affirming cultural identity and fostering trust promote greater student engagement and academic achievement. A statistically significant relationship was found between PSTs’ CRTSE and CRTOE. This association suggests that as self-efficacy in CRT increases, so does the belief in the positive outcomes associated with these practices. This finding underscores the connection between confidence and expectancy, illustrating that self-efficacy is a key driver of teachers’ beliefs in the effectiveness of culturally responsive pedagogy. CRTR did not have a significant mediating effect on the relationship between CRTSE and CRTOE. This indicates that, despite preservice teachers’ perceived readiness to implement CRT, this readiness does not account for the linkage between self-efficacy and outcome expectancy. Consequently, self-efficacy in culturally responsive practices remains the principal factor influencing teachers’ outcome beliefs, independently of their readiness. Given that the present study found no significant mediating effect of CRTR on the relationship between self-efficacy and outcome expectancy, it is recommended that teacher education institutions review and redesign their readiness programs. Paper Examining ChatGPT as an Assistant for Pre-service Teachers’ Reflective Writing Iakob Gogebashvili Telavi State University, Georgia Presenting Author:Reflective writing is an essential component of the pre-service teacher preparation process as they transition into the teaching profession. Reflection enables pre-service teachers to identify their strengths, recognize areas for improvement, and develop professionally (Cohen-Sayag & Fischl, 2012; Boud, 2001; Dumlao & Pinatacan, 2019). Reflective writing in teacher education is most beneficial when it reaches deeper levels of thinking and engages the highest forms of critical reflection, using reflection-based interpretations to planfuture actions (Mezirow, 1990). Research has shown that reflective writing often becomes merely a descriptive account of events, lacking depth and critical judgment (Chen et al., 2016). Students may struggle to clearly articulate what they have learned, fail to think critically, and neglect to evaluate their experiences(Spaulding and Wilson, 2002). Deep reflection can be achieved through dialogues based on questions. Ghaye (2010, p. 42) calls this type of dialogues “reflective conversations,” which may lead to teachers to learn from their own educational experience and question existing educational values. In reflective conversations, the one who asks questions plays a crucial part. According to Pendlebury (1995) this person is ‘dialogical other’, and his or her role is to elicit the practical arguments and ‘theories’ that underpin the teacher’s work (Cited in Ghaye, 2010).The ‘dialogical other’ is supportive and adds structure to the reflective conversation; he/she does not necessarily focus on weakness but ensure balance in judgement and strengthen the positive things. In Bain et al. (1999) study with dialogue reflections 66% of the subjects improved their reflections from reporting to reasoning. Since the emergence of ChatGPT, AI has revolutionized education; it has been used to produce learning materials, assess, give feedback, and act as a virtual conversation assistant in higher education (Dempereet al., 2023; Essel et al. 2022; Wang et al., 2017). Most research on ChatGPT focuses on lesson planning, personalized learning, feedback, and content creation, but little is known about its role in reflective writing. It is unclear how interacting with ChatGPT affects pre-service teachers’ reflective writing. This study will explore this gap. This study is grounded in reflective practice theory. ChatGPT is viewed as a dialogical other (Pendlebury, 1995 cited in Ghaye, 2010) that supports reflection through asking questions, providing feedback, and dialogue. ChatGPT serves as a scaffold that helps pre-service teachers express their thoughts, deepen metacognitive awareness, which aligns with guided reflective dialogue models. Combining the potential of ChatGPT to brainstorm ideas into reflective writing, can address the challenges in reflective thinking. This study explores ChatGPT’s potential to support pre-service teachers in developing their reflective writing by generating ideas, offering personalized assistance, and providing feedback. Our study aims to contribute to the growing understanding of how AI can enhance reflective practices in teacher education. Specifically, the study investigates how ChatGPT influences pre-service teachers’ reflective writing and their vocabulary use. The research questions are as follows: RQ1: How do pre-service teachers communicate with ChatGPT for reflective writing? RQ2: How does this interaction with ChatGPT as a writing assistant influence the content and structure of their reflective writing? These research findings provide insight into the use of ChatGPT in the reflective writing process, as well as its potential for future development and practical application. For researchers, the findings can serve as a foundation for further studies and experimentation. The results may benefit teacher education programs; program coordinators and educators may consider integrating ChatGPT into pre-service teachers’ reflective practice to enhance their level of reflection and focus. Additionally, the results could be interesting for AI developers to create special AI tools for reflective writing. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used To answer the research questions, a mixed-method study was conducted. 15 pre-service teachers, who were enrolled in the BA–MA integrated Primary Teacher Education Program at Iakob Gogebashvili Telavi State University (Georgia), were involved in the study. Pre-service teachers' reflective essays—first written independently (Reflective essay 1, RE1), then written with the help of ChatGPT's guiding questions on the same topic (Reflective essay 2, RE2) — were analysed. Both sets of reflective essays, along with the participants' conversation logs with ChatGPT, were collected and examined. The quantitative study design focused on analyzing the following: • Word Count analysis of RE1 & RE2: This comparison aimed to determine how many words the participants wrote independently versus with the help of AI, assessing whether the word count increased when ChatGPT was involved. SPSS 24 was used to calculate descriptive statistics (mean, median, standard deviation) and conduct inferential statistics (t-test and p-value). • Prompts Count: Quantitative analysis of the prompts evaluated how frequently participants interacted with ChatGPT. • Count of the same lexical units in RE2 & logs; Overlap of lexical units between RE2 and ChatGPT conversation logs: To measure the influence of AI on vocabulary and ideas, repeated lexical units were examined (Voyant Tools https://voyant-tools.org) in RE2 that appeared in the ChatGPT logs, indicating the extent to which participants incorporated AI-generated language and concepts (Poldner et al, 2014). A qualitative study design was used to analyze the following: • Content analysis of RE2 and logs; Reflection topics suggested by ChatGPT and their occurrence in RE2: For content analysis, it was necessary to identify the questions and topics in the ChatGPT logs and then trace these topics in the participants’ Reflective Essay 2 (RE2) (Chen et al., 2016; Zhang et al., 2023). • Prompts Analysis: Understanding how participants communicated with AI and how this interaction related to their writing was essential. This included examining whether participants addressed ChatGPT with requests or questions and whether they responded to AI’s questions within the conversation logs. To analyze reflection topics in the ChatGPT conversations, all logs were coded and examined using thematic analysis by two researchers, one of whom was an external researcher. To reduce potential bias in coding and qualitative judgment, both researchers independently reviewed and coded the reflective essays and ChatGPT logs. The types of prompts (questions, requests, responses/dialogic exchanges), as well as participants’ introductions to AI, were also thematically analyzed. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The aim of the study was to explore ChatGPT’s impact on pre-service teachers’ reflective writing to understand how AI can be used to improve pre-service teachers' reflective writing. The word count comparison of independently written essays and ChatGPT-assisted showed that the effect might be not only significant but also meaningful in practice, as it suggests that AI support leads to relatively longer reflections. The standardized AI output of a set of questions heavily relies on its training data, as also noted by Buchholtz and Huget (2024). ChatGPT acts as a “dialogic other”, asks questions, provides feedback and adds structure to the writing. ChatGPT’s questions might inspire students to reflect by introducing new ideas that influence their writing and thinking. Students may adopt concepts, structures, and vocabulary from the AI. ChatGPT may provide a set of questions personalized to pre-service teachers’ needs. However, reviewing all questions generated by ChatGPT may be difficult, as it is time-consuming and cognitively demanding. Additionally, AI could offer instant feedback and supply with model sentences to support reflective thinking. Students should receive proper guidance before writing a reflective essay with AI. They need to understand that the scope of the AI’s responses can be controlled through carefully structured prompts. A clear introduction to the task is crucial for ensuring effective guidance from ChatGPT. Using ChatGPT as a guiding partner for pre-service teachers’ reflective writing requires careful consideration. On one hand, ChatGPT might enhance reflection with different topics related to teaching profession, on the other hand it could impact pre-service teachers’ writing in many ways. Students may lose their voice, copy the sentences from the logs, or follow suggested structure and opt out answering deep questions.
