Paper Beyond Datafication: Oral Assessment as a Device of Pedagogical Resilience University of Salerno, Italy Presenting Author:The current landscape of educational research is situated within what Morin (2020) defines as a “poly-crisis.” This term refers to a systemic and simultaneous entanglement of multiple emergencies affecting our society on a global scale: from post-pandemic fragilities to geopolitical instabilities, up to the climate crisis, which calls for a rethinking of collective life. This complexity does not operate in isolation; rather, it reverberates across the different levels of the educational ecosystem described by Bronfenbrenner (2023). Such pressure drives institutions toward a progressive datafication of knowledge, in which learning is often reduced to measurable units (Williamson, 2017; Williamson et al., 2020). Within this context, the education of future teachers enrolled in the Degree Programme in Primary Education Sciences now stands at a crucial crossroads. On the one hand, there is a push toward performative standardisation, oriented toward the management of large cohorts through numerical indicators and automated testing. On the other hand, there emerges the need to preserve academic sincerity. This crisis of sincerity reflects the tension between the automation of assessment, represented by Computer-Based Assessment (CBA), and the need for knowledge that remains situated, authentic, and deeply critical. If, as Biesta (2021) argues, the essence of education lies in “subjectification” and in the recognition of students’ humanity, then summative assessment cannot - and must not -be reduced to a mere act of algorithmic or statistical measurement. In the era of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the proliferation of fake news (Al-Rawahi & Al-Shammari, 2024; Drouiche, 2025), the central challenge of teaching professionalism lies in the ability to distinguish between the mere mechanical reproduction of data and the genuine acquisition of reflective competence (Fishman & Gardner, 2022). Within this framework, the present contribution proposes to analyse the oral examination not as an obsolete legacy of the past, nor as a condemnation of structured testing. On the contrary, objective tests are acknowledged as fundamental tools for ensuring standards of accountability, equity, and uniformity in the assessment of broad domains of knowledge. However, the oral examination is here investigated as a device of pedagogical resilience, necessary to complete and enrich the overall assessment profile. While structured tests ensure bureaucratic efficiency and psychometric validity across extensive content areas, the oral examination functions as a glocal response (Sepúlveda Alzate, 1999). It represents a practice rooted in a solid local tradition that offers a macro-level solution to the fragmentation of the educational relationship. Indeed, evaluative dialogue allows for the emergence of that “professional knowledge” which inevitably eludes the binary cataloguing of Big Data: namely, critical argumentation skills, ethical stance, and the communicative competence of the future teacher. The oral examination therefore does not seek to replace objective tools but rather to integrate their epistemological limits, fostering a human encounter that takes shape as an act of institutional trust. From this perspective, the social responsibility of the researcher transcends the mere academic perimeter to take on the character of a conscious political action (Biesta, 2021). Documenting and defending the validity of dialogic assessment models through the analysis of Syllabi means resisting the drift toward a purely technocratic and faceless form of evaluation. In this view, the Syllabus ceases to be a cold bureaucratic requirement and becomes a manifesto of transparency. It turns into a genuine social contract that safeguards research autonomy and ensures depth of learning even in times of extreme uncertainty (Fullan et al., 2023). In conclusion, this study aims to demonstrate that safeguarding the oral assessment represents a forward-looking strategy. Such an approach is capable of ensuring the holistic quality of teacher education by integrating the effectiveness of large-scale. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The research design adopts a mixed-methods approach. The central aim of the study is to investigate whether the oral examination, in its glocal dimension, can represent an effective micro-pedagogical response to the macro-European challenge of datafication. The study addresses two research questions: (1) to what extent does the oral examination function as a resilience device capable of ensuring the holistic integrity of teacher education; and (2) how does the Syllabus manage the tension between bureaucratic transparency requirements and the need to preserve pedagogical dialogue? The sampling strategy is systemic and includes the entire population of the 41 single-cycle master’s degree programmes in Primary Education Sciences offered in Italy during the academic year 2024–2025. Syllabi are adopted as the primary data source and are interpreted as indicators of the pedagogical intentions expressed by academic staff. The research is structured into three sequential phases. First, a systematic census of the declared assessment modalities is conducted, mapping the distribution of oral examinations, structured written tests, and Computer-Based Assessment (CBA). These modalities are analysed in relation to Messick’s (1995) validity criteria, with particular attention to the coherence between assessment methods and intended learning outcomes. Second, a comparative analysis of the assessment paradigms underlying the Syllabus descriptions is carried out. This phase draws on Broadfoot’s (2021) critical perspective on the risks of exclusively quantitative assessment, as well as on the framework of Sustainable Assessment, which emphasises the role of assessment in fostering students’ long-term capacity for autonomous judgement (Beck et al., 2013; Bearman et al., 2023). Third, Qualitative Content Analysis (QCA) is employed to examine the academic language used in the description of assessment practices (Schreirer, 2012). Within this phase, the Syllabus is conceptualised as a “boundary work” device (Gieryn, 1983), aimed at defining and protecting the boundaries of academic sincerity, particularly in relation to the misuse of generative artificial intelligence. Research rigour is ensured through a multi-level triangulation strategy. Methodological triangulation (Denzin, 2012) integrates quantitative data from the national census with qualitative semantic analysis of the Syllabi, while theoretical triangulation combines insights from docimology and the relevant scholarly literature (Iannotta & Tammaro, 2025). Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The analysis of the 41-degree programs in Primary Education Sciences within the Italian academic system yields conclusions that extend beyond a national perspective. The findings indicate that the persistence of the oral examination—adopted by more than half of Italian universities—should not be interpreted as a methodological anomaly or as passive adherence to tradition. Rather, in the context of the contemporary poly-crisis, it emerges as a form of conscious pedagogical resilience aligned with advanced European assessment perspectives. Although the Finnish model is often cited as a benchmark for high-trust cultures and assessment autonomy, this study suggests that the Italian system offers a procedurally robust articulation of these principles. In an era of increasing automation and a crisis of sincerity in written academic work, the oral examination fulfils an irreplaceable epistemological function by assessing dimensions that Big Data and Computer-Based Assessment (CBA) cannot capture, particularly pedagogical judgement in complex and uncertain contexts (Shermis & Burstein, 2013). The evidence highlights evaluative dialogue as a privileged means of exploring students’ reflective maturity, understood as the integration of theoretical knowledge, situated sensitivity, and ethical positioning. In line with Biesta (2021), assessment thus becomes an act of “subjectification,” recognising the emergence of professional identity. Finally, the study supports hybrid and sustainable assessment models that balance technological efficiency with educational relationships (Bearman et al., 2023), reframing assessment as an act of care for teaching professionalism (Sepúlveda Alzate, 1999). Paper When Teachers Need Practice: Using Practical AI agent to Train Pre-service Teachers Shanghai jiao tong university, China, People's Republic of Presenting Author:The role of the contemporary educator has expanded significantly beyond subject instruction to encompass the holistic well-being of students (Wijaya et al., 2023). In recent years, the prevalence of student mental health issues, ranging from anxiety and depression to behavioral defiance, has risen globally (Auerbach et al., 2018), placing increasing demands on teachers to act as first responders in the educational ecosystem (Fitrianto, 2025; Gunawardena et al., 2024). While teachers are not expected to function as clinical therapists, they are increasingly required to possess the ability to distinguish students’ mental health problems, engage in empathetic dialogue, and be familiar with the procedural steps to manage these crises effectively (Dimitropoulos et al., 2021). Consequently, teacher education programs have begun to integrate school and counseling intervention skills, such as Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), which equips teachers with actionable, future-oriented strategies to support at-risk students (Ohrt et al., 2020). However, a critical pedagogical gap persists between possessing theoretical knowledge of these procedures and the ability to apply them in real-time (Ohrt et al., 2020). The acquisition of interpersonal skills requires repeated, deliberate practice. Yet, in teacher education, the lack of students for training purposes presents a profound ethical and logistical challenge (Arnaiz-Sánchez et al., 2023). It is unethical and potentially dangerous to use real teenager students experiencing genuine mental health crises as practice subjects for pre-service teachers. As a result, the standard method for practical training has traditionally been peer-to-peer role-play, where pre-service teachers take turns acting as the teacher and the student (Thompson et al., 2022). While peer role-play is accessible, it often fails to provide lively or realistic practice. Peers, typically graduate classmates, struggle to authentically embody the developmental and emotional complexity of a K-12 student. Furthermore, peer interactions are frequently compromised by social desirability bias. For example, peers may be overly cooperative, hesitant to simulate genuine resistance, or prone to breaking character due to social awkwardness (Seery et al., 2021). This creates a training environment that is safe but lacks rigor. Pre-service teachers may execute the procedures correctly in a low-stakes peer setting and develop a sense of self-efficacy , but this confidence often proves fragile when faced with the unpredictability of a real classroom. The field is in need of a training modality that provides the safety of a simulation but the unpredictability and resistance of a real student. Recent advancements in Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Large Language Models (LLMs) offer a transformative solution to practice partners (Green et al., 2025). By moving beyond generic chatbots, educators can now utilize strictly engineered AI agents designed to act as specific student personas. Unlike a peer, the AI agent does not tire, does not judge, and does not break character. Crucially, it can be engineered to offer conditional cooperation, meaning it will only respond positively if the pre-service teacher correctly applies the designated intervention procedures (e.g., specific SFBT techniques). This study explores the integration of such a Practical AI Agent into a postgraduate teacher education program in China. The course aims to prepare pre-service teachers, specifically those majoring in subject teaching, to identify and manage student mental health behaviors. Researcher posit that a strictly engineered AI agent acts as a high school student, creating an immersive environment that bridges the gap between theory and practice. The primary objective of this research is to evaluate whether training with a Practical AI Agent leads to superior knowledge acquisition and skill competence compared to traditional peer role-play, and to examine how this technology affects the alignment between the teachers' confidence and their actual competence. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used We used a quasi-experimental design in this study. The participants consisted of 33 full-time postgraduate students majoring in subject teaching at a university in China with informed consent. All procedures were approved by the institutional review board of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (H20250564I). All participants were pre-service teachers enrolled in a mandatory course about school mental health. The participants were the students in two parallel classes and volunterred to participate in this study. They were naturally divided to two conditions: an Experimental Group (n=18) which engaged with the strictly engineered Practical AI Agent, and a Control Group (n=15) which engaged in traditional peer role-play instruction. The intervention procedure was structured to isolate the impact of the practice modality. Both groups received identical theoretical instruction on SFBT. The divergence occurred solely during the practical application phase. The Control Group utilized peer role-play exercises, where one student acted as the teacher while the other role-played a specific student scenario. These group relied entirely on the peer’s improvisational acting ability to simulate the problematic behavior. In contrast, the Experimental Group utilized the Practical AI Agent. This agent was built on Coze platform, based on a Large Language Model. The agent takes two roles: a) to act as a high school student with mild to medium psychological concerns seeking help from the partcipant and react to the participants’ SFBT interventions, and b) to act as a TA to give the participant feedback and further suggestions as requested or every five rounds. To comprehensively assess the outcomes, a mixed-methods data collection strategy was employed. Knowledge acquisition was measured via pre- and post-tests assessing the participants’ theoretical understanding of SFBT and procedural steps for mental health interventions. Additionally, the measure of self-efficacy in handling student mental health was adapted from General Self-Efficacy Scale (Schwarzer & Jerusalem, 1995). Finally, for the Experimental group, open-ended questionnaire was used to understand perceptions of the AI’s usefulness. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Quantitative results are organized to address our primary research questions regarding the effectiveness of AI-assisted practice in developing SFBT knowledge and self-efficacy. We firstly conducted independent samples t-tests for baseline equivalence and post-intervention group comparisons, paired samples t-tests for within-group pre-post changes, and calculated effect sizes (Cohen's d) to evaluate practical significance given the modest sample size. We used Spearman's rank-order correlations to examine all bivariate relationships. Regarding the primary objective of SFBT knowledge acquisition, result revealed a statistically significant difference between conditions at the post-test stage. After controlling for pre-test scores, the AI-Assisted group outperformed the Control group, demonstrating significantly higher retention of theoretical knowledge and intervention procedures. To understand the psychological impact of the training, we examined self-efficacy. Paired sample t-tests indicated that both the AI-Assisted group and the Peer Control group experienced statistically significant improvements in self-efficacy from pre-test to post-test. Independent sample comparisons showed no significant difference in the magnitude of self-efficacy gains between the two groups. Effectively, both groups felt equally more confident after the training. However, a critical difference emerged when comparing these self-efficacy scores against evaluations of practical skill. While the AI group’s self-efficacy gains were accompanied by a statistically significant increase in practical skill scores, the Control group’s practical skill scores did not show a corresponding significant increase. This finding revealed that while peer role-play generates confidence, it may foster an illusion of competence. In contrast, the AI intervention successfully aligned the students’subjective confidence with their objective competence. Ultimately, This study shows that practicing with an AI agent helps pre-service teachers build real skills that match their confidence, providing a more effective way to prepare for student mental health issues than simply role-playing with peers. Paper Teacher Education for Inclusive Digital Teaching: A Scoping Review of Pre-Service Training Approaches 1: University of Oldenburg, Germany; 2: University of Vechta, Germany; 3: University of Wuppertal, Germany; 4: Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany Presenting Author:The increasing digitalisation of education systems and the legally anchored requirement for inclusive education place high demands on teachers. Studies such as those by Fichtner et al. (2023) indicate that digitalisation constitutes one of the central challenges for the further development of schools and teaching. At the same time, the second periodic review of Germany under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD, 2023) highlights substantial deficits in the implementation of inclusive education. Inclusion and digitalisation therefore need to be addressed jointly in classroom practice, as digital media can enable individualised learning pathways and may support the consideration of diverse learning prerequisites. Moreover, digital tools are discussed in the literature as offering significant potential to reduce barriers and promote participation for all students (e.g. Fichtner et al., 2023). The successful implementation of inclusive digital teaching largely depends on teachers, who play a central role in creating learning environments that are both inclusive and digitally supported. In this context, pre-service teachers are of particular importance. As future educators, they play a key role in shaping future educational practice and institutional development with regard to accessibility and participation for all learners (Martin, 2020; Schröder & Schulz, 2024). To enable the effective realisation of inclusive digital teaching, pre-service teachers must be comprehensively prepared through appropriate training opportunities at universities and teacher education institutions (Böttinger & Schulz, 2023). Conceptually, the study is situated within competence-oriented approaches to teacher professionalisation and research on inclusive pedagogy and digital competence development in teacher education. While numerous studies address either digital transformation or inclusive education in isolation, there is still a lack of systematic analyses examining how these two demands can be integrated within teacher education programmes (e.g. Beier & Czaja, 2023). In addition, there is limited research on how training programmes need to be designed in order to prepare students effectively, as implementation practices are often shaped individually by the respective institutions. To address existing research gaps in the field of inclusive digital teacher professionalisation, a scoping review based on a systematic search strategy is conducted (Arksey & O’Malley, 2005; Newman & Gough, 2020). The aim of the review is to identify existing approaches to inclusive digital teacher education and to examine how these approaches are designed in practice. By jointly considering normative principles and empirical evidence, the review seeks to generate both theoretical and practical insights into the design of teacher education programmes. Particular attention is given to empirical studies that evaluate existing training offers and report effects, while conceptual contributions are analysed separately to map the field of programme designs. The review addresses the following research questions:
Overall, this review provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of research on inclusive digital teacher education in German-speaking contexts and offers valuable insights for the further development of pre-service teacher education programmes in an international and comparative perspective. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The scoping review followed a systematic and transparent search strategy across several databases hosted by EBSCOhost (e.g. ERIC) as well as additional international databases. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were defined a priori and documented before the search process. For collaborative work on the review, the software Covidence was used, which structures the review process in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines (Page et al., 2021). The PRISMA framework ensures transparent and reproducible reporting, while the use of Covidence increases the efficiency of the literature selection process and enhances the reproducibility of the findings. The database search yielded a total of 11,290 publications (APA PsycArticles: 6,795; APA PsycInfo: 2,249; ERIC: 229; FIS Bildung: 1,390; PSYNDEX: 28; Google Scholar [English and German]: 599), of which 93 duplicates were removed. Google Scholar results were screened using predefined search strings and predefined screening limits. The present contribution focuses exclusively on studies from the German-speaking countries (DACH region) and on the first phase of teacher education. The following inclusion criteria were applied: • intervention (e.g. seminars) within teacher education programmes, • target group: pre-service teachers, • digital content, • inclusive content, • type of publication: all empirical study designs (quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods) as well as theoretically and conceptually oriented articles, which were coded and analysed in separate analytic strands, • location of studies: Germany, Austria, or Switzerland (DACH). Out of the 11,290 identified studies, 35 studies met the inclusion criteria and were therefore included in and analysed as part of this review, following a multi-stage screening process (title/abstract and full-text screening). Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings All 35 analysed studies originated from Germany; no studies conducted in Switzerland or Austria that met the predefined inclusion criteria were identified. This geographical concentration suggests that research activity in this field is currently primarily embedded in the German teacher education context, while comparable systematic investigations in other German-speaking countries appear limited or not yet sufficiently documented in indexed literature. It is also noteworthy that the majority of the studies were published from around 2020 onwards. This points to a recent and increasing scholarly engagement with inclusive digital teacher education, possibly related to policy reforms, curricular developments, and broader digital transformation processes in education. A further central finding is that most identified concepts have not been empirically evaluated and are based primarily on theoretical or conceptual programme descriptions. Where training formats were examined empirically, many studies relied on relatively small samples, which limits robustness and generalisability of the reported effects. Follow-up measurements were only rarely conducted. As a result, the long-term effects of the examined interventions cannot be reliably determined, which restricts conclusions regarding sustainability and transferability. Instead, short-term outcome measures predominated, typically focusing on immediate self-reported competence gains or attitudinal changes. With regard to format and implementation, most interventions consisted of seminar-based or workshop-based approaches, frequently embedded within time-limited projects. These offers were often not permanently integrated into the formal structures of teacher education programmes. While project-based implementations can foster innovation and experimentation, they are only partly suitable for long-term institutional anchoring and curricular continuity. From a teacher education perspective, more systematic and structurally embedded integration of inclusive digital content appears necessary to support sustainable competence development. Overall, the findings indicate a growing but still fragmented evidence base and highlight the need for larger-scale, longitudinal, and structurally embedded research designs, both within German-speaking contexts and in broader international comparison.
