Paper The Characteristics of Social Support and Perfectionist Climate in the Light of Sports Persistence University of Debrecen, Hungary Presenting Author:Sport persistence, social support, and perfectionist climate are central psychological and environmental factors shaping athletes’ performance, mental health, and long-term engagement in sport. Research consistently shows that persistence in sport is not merely a function of individual motivation or talent but rather emerges from the dynamic interaction between athletes and their social environments. Understanding how supportive relationships and performance-related expectations operate together is therefore essential for developing effective sport psychology interventions. Sport persistence refers to an athlete’s ability to cope with difficulties, maintain motivation, and continue participation despite setbacks. It is strongly influenced by psychological resources such as resilience, self-regulation, and perceived support. Among these, social support plays a particularly protective role by reducing burnout and psychological exhaustion while enhancing self-esteem and well-being. Social support is broadly defined as the perception that one is cared for, valued, and able to rely on others for emotional, informational, or instrumental assistance. Social support is a multidimensional construct derived from several sources within an athlete’s immediate environment. Empirical findings demonstrate that positive reinforcement from teammates, coaches, family members, and friends is especially critical during periods of underperformance or injury, when athletes are more vulnerable psychologically. In contrast, negative feedback and excessive criticism can undermine confidence and further impair performance. Alongside social support, the perfectionist climate represents a powerful environmental influence in sport. A perfectionist climate is characterized by high expectations, strong emphasis on mistake avoidance, conditional approval, and limited psychological safety. This climate has a dual nature: while it may be perceived as motivating and performance-enhancing under certain conditions, its maladaptive forms are associated with heightened anxiety, stress, burnout, and depressive symptoms. Such environments are particularly prevalent in competitive sport settings, where unrealistic standards and fear of failure are often normalized. Female athletes, especially in aesthetic sports and dance, are more frequently exposed to body-image-related expectations, increasing psychological risk. At the recreational level, perfectionist climates tend to reduce enjoyment and motivation, whereas at the elite level they are linked to burnout and emotional exhaustion. Differences also emerge across sport types, with team sports often characterized by coach-driven expectations and sanctions, and individual sports by heightened personal responsibility and anxiety. From a socio-ecological and motivational perspective, sport persistence results from the interaction between social support, perceived expectations, and athletes’ psychological interpretations of their environments. Supportive relationships are more likely to foster adaptive striving and realistic goal-setting, whereas controlling or critical environments promote maladaptive perfectionism and anxiety. Gender differences in sport persistence are likewise embedded in socialisation processes and differential expectations placed on male and female athletes. Prior research suggests that boys and girls experience and interpret social support and performance-related expectations differently, which may indirectly influence persistence through the perceived perfectionist climate. Accordingly, it is theoretically plausible that social support and perfectionist climate function not only as direct predictors of sport persistence but also as mediating mechanisms through which gender-related differences and social contexts exert their effects. Based on this, we have formulated the following hypotheses in our research:
Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Data collection was conducted between 8 January 2024 to 20 June 2024 following approval from the United Ethical Review Committee for Research in Psychology. Data were collected using an online self-administered questionnaire, where participants completed a battery of self-report questionnaires assessing sport persistence, perceived social support, and perceived perfectionist climate, along with basic sociodemographic questions. Participation was voluntary and anonymous. During the quantitative study, we collected data nationwide in Hungary, targeting young people aged 14–25 who exercise regularly at least 3 times a week and are pursuing secondary or higher education. A total of 1209 responses were received during data collection, having N=1105 participants after data cleaning. The sample was limited to secondary and higher education students to examine sport persistence within a dual academic–sport context, where educational demands, institutional expectations, and social support from parents and teachers are particularly relevant. During the planning phase, efforts were made to achieve a sample balanced in terms of gender, settlement type, and school type. We used the following questionnaires: • Sociodemographic Questionnaire • Sports and Health-Specific Questions • Sport Persistence Questionnaire (K. E. Kovács & Csukonyi, 2025) • Short Scale of Youth’s Social Support (K. E. Kovács & Mercz-Madarassy, 2022; Pluta et al., 2020) • Perfectionistic Climate Questionnaire (Grugan et al., 2021) Data analyses were conducted using Jamovi 2.3.28 statistical software. First, descriptive statistics (means, standard deviations, frequencies) were calculated to characterise the sample and the main study variables. Group differences across educational level and sport participation characteristics were examined using chi-square tests for categorical variables and analysis of variance (ANOVA) appropriate. To test the study hypotheses, a series of regression-based mediation analyses were conducted using bootstrapped confidence intervals to analyse the psychological and sociodemographic variables underlying sports persistence. The research aimed to explore the extent to which athletes’ persistence in sports can be explained by different dimensions of perceived success and prospects, as well as their interactions, regarding gender, age, place of residence, changes in family structure and school status. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings From a broader theoretical perspective, the findings align with socio-ecological and motivational models of sport participation, which emphasise that athletes’ engagement and persistence are shaped by their interpersonal environments. Social support and the perceived perfectionist climate function as interconnected contextual factors rather than isolated influences, jointly shaping motivational experiences and long-term sport involvement. This supports previous research indicating that sport persistence is embedded in social expectations and evaluative processes rather than driven solely by individual characteristics. The results show a clear association between gender and sport persistence, with men displaying lower persistence than women in the present sample. Although perceived social support was positively related to persistence, its role in explaining gender differences was modest. Different sources of support showed contrasting patterns: parental support was stronger among boys and positively related to persistence, whereas teacher support was perceived as stronger among girls and was also positively associated with persistence. These opposing effects largely offset each other, while peer support showed no meaningful association with persistence. Dimensions of the perfectionist climate were also relevant. Higher perceived expectations were positively associated with persistence, suggesting that expectations can act as motivating and structuring forces when embedded in a supportive context. In contrast, a more critical climate was linked to lower persistence, particularly among female athletes, highlighting the detrimental impact of excessive or poorly delivered feedback. Overall, the findings indicate that sport persistence is shaped by a complex interaction of social support and motivational climate, with adult support playing a more prominent role than peer influence. Paper Goal-Driven and Socially Embedded Pathways of Sport Persistence Among Adolescents and Young Adults 1: University of Debrecen, Hungary; 2: Budapest University of Technology and Economics Presenting Author:Sustained engagement in sport during adolescence and early adulthood is a key determinant of physical health, psychological well-being, and long-term lifestyle patterns. While sport motivation and commitment have been extensively examined, the construct of sport persistence, defined as the ability to maintain effective, goal-directed engagement in sport over time, remains underexplored in international research (Berki et al., 2020; Kovács & Szakál, 2024). Existing studies tend to isolate motivational or social factors, rather than examining their combined and interacting influence. The present research addresses this gap by investigating how sport orientation and relational embeddedness jointly shape sport persistence among secondary and tertiary students. The theoretical framework integrates motivational psychology with socio-ecological perspectives. From a motivational standpoint, sport orientation is conceptualised as a multidimensional construct encompassing goal orientation, competitiveness, and win orientation (Albert et al., 2021). These dimensions represent qualitatively different motivational drivers: long-term self-referenced development, engagement with competitive challenges, and outcome-focused victory striving. Drawing on achievement goal theory, the study assumes that not all motivational orientations contribute equally to sustained persistence (Dunn & Elliott, 2008; Tóth et al., 2024). We must emphasise that sport persistence is a complex phenomenon that, according to the ecological model, is influenced by several interacting interpersonal and environmental factors (Bauman et al., 2012). From the perspective of the micro-system in Bronfenbrenner’s and Bauman et al’s socio-ecological framework, the family, peer group and coaches are especially influential. The family is typically the earliest context of socialisation. Although its direct influence may diminish during adolescence and early adulthood, it continues to provide important emotional and practical support throughout life. In childhood and during competitive sport participation, this support can be crucial. Family members also convey norms and attitudes about sport; through their behaviour and expectations, they help shape the athlete’s commitment and work ethic. Research has shown, for example, that young people are more likely to take part in sport if at least one parent has been involved in sport themselves (Kovács, 2022). Relational embeddedness is operationalised through perceived personal and knowledge-based support from peers and teachers, capturing both emotional and instrumental dimensions of social capital (Rees et al., 2015). This approach aligns with social support theory and research highlighting the buffering and motivational functions of interpersonal relationships in sport (Shang & Yang, 2021). The primary objective is to examine how motivational orientations and social support mechanisms explain individual differences in sport persistence, and whether they mediate the effects of sociodemographic and sport-specific factors. Specifically, the study addresses the following research questions:
Based on prior empirical and theoretical work, the study hypothesises that goal orientation and competitiveness are central predictors of persistence, whereas win orientation alone plays a limited role. Furthermore, it is expected that peer-based personal support constitutes a critical social pathway sustaining long-term engagement in sport. Sociodemographic influences are assumed to operate largely indirectly, through motivational and relational mechanisms rather than direct effects. By integrating psychological and social dimensions within a mediation framework, the research advances a more nuanced understanding of sport persistence. It positions persistence not merely as behavioural continuity, but as a higher-order indicator of adaptive athletic functioning shaped by internal goal structures and supportive social environments. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used During the quantitative study, we collected data nationwide, focusing on young people aged 14-25 who exercise regularly (at least 3 times a week) and are pursuing secondary or higher education. Out of 1209 participants, 1105 respondents were included after cleaning. Data collection was conducted between 8 January and 20 June 2024. The sampling strategy was explicitly targeted at secondary school and university students, so the results reflect the proportions of these two populations. Among secondary school students, the proportions of first-, second, and third-year students are almost equal, while fourth- and fifth-year students are significantly underrepresented. Within the total sample, 43.3% are secondary school students and 56.7% are university students. Participants completed an online questionnaire comprising four main sections: sociodemographic background, sport participation characteristics, and validated psychological instruments. Sociodemographic variables included gender, age, educational level, parental education and employment, place of residence, and indicators of family socioeconomic status. Sport-related variables assessed frequency and level of participation, club membership, sport type (individual vs. team), and competitive level. Regarding gender distribution, 52.3% of respondents are female, 46.9% are male, and 0.8% did not answer this question. This distribution roughly corresponds to the Hungarian population ratios. However, there are differences in the sub-samples: among secondary school students, the proportion of boys is higher than expected, while among university students, the proportion of girls is higher than expected. Looking at the distribution of respondents by place of residence, most live in county seats (37.3%), followed by small towns (23.7%), villages (15.6%), Budapest (12.2%), and large cities (10.2%). The proportion of those living on farms is negligible (0.9%). Sport orientation was measured using the short version of the Sport Orientation Questionnaire (Chang et al., 2020), assessing win orientation, goal orientation, and competitiveness on five-point Likert scales. Sport persistence was assessed with a validated unidimensional Sport Persistence Questionnaire (Kovács & Csukonyi, 2025), capturing long-term perseverance and commitment. Relational embeddedness was measured through items assessing perceived personal and knowledge-based support from teachers and peers (Kovács et al., 2019). Data analysis was conducted using SPSS and Jamovi statistical software. Descriptive statistics were calculated to characterise the sample. Inferential analyses included analysis of variance and multiple mediation models, testing both direct and indirect pathways from sociodemographic and sport-specific variables to sport persistence through sport orientation and relational embeddedness. Bootstrapped confidence intervals were used to assess the significance of indirect effects. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Descriptive analyses revealed systematic differences in sport persistence across sociodemographic and sport-related characteristics. Higher levels of sport persistence and stronger sport orientation were observed among male athletes, secondary school students, competitive athletes, team sport participants, and individuals engaged in organised club sport. In contrast, lower persistence was characteristic of female athletes, university students, recreational athletes, individual athletes, and those without club membership. Mediation analyses demonstrated that sport orientation played a central role in explaining sport persistence. Goal orientation and competitiveness emerged as strong, consistent predictors of persistence, while win orientation did not contribute significantly. Sociodemographic variables influenced persistence primarily through these motivational dimensions. Gender showed no significant direct effect; however, male athletes reported higher goal orientation and competitiveness, which indirectly increased persistence. Father’s employment status exerted both direct and indirect positive effects, mediated by stronger goal and competition orientation. In contrast, higher educational level was associated with lower persistence, partly due to reduced goal orientation and competitiveness. Sport-specific variables showed robust effects. A higher level of sport participation directly predicted sport persistence and also exerted indirect effects through enhanced goal orientation and competitiveness. Similarly, sports club membership increased persistence both directly and indirectly, primarily via goal orientation. Win orientation did not function as a mediator in any of the examined models. Personal support from peers was the most influential social factor. Peer personal support showed a significant positive association with sport persistence and partially mediated the relationship between gender and persistence. Teacher-related support did not demonstrate a mediating role. Paper Psychological Dynamics of Staying in Sport: Grit, Rumination, and Persistence University of Debrecen, Hungary Presenting Author:Long-term engagement in sport is a complex phenomenon influenced by physical, social, and psychological factors. While training conditions and physical abilities are essential, a growing body of research highlights the central role of psychological characteristics in sustaining athletes’ motivation, commitment, and well-being over time (Kovács & Szakál, 2024a; Zhang et al., 2022). Among these characteristics, sport persistence, grit, and rumination have emerged as particularly relevant constructs; however, their joint functioning remains insufficiently understood. Sport persistence refers to the ability to remain engaged in sport activities over an extended period, even in the presence of setbacks, failures, or competing life demands (Kovács & Szakál, 2025). Previous studies demonstrate that persistence is shaped by individual-level variables (e.g., motivation, coping skills), social context (e.g., team climate, family background), and structural conditions such as club membership or competitive level (Schröder & Knisel, 2024; Stefansen et al., 2018). Despite this, persistence cannot be reduced to behavioural frequency or effort alone; instead, it reflects a dynamic psychological process embedded in motivation regulation and cognitive-emotional processing. Within this framework, grit has been proposed as a key motivational resource supporting long-term goal pursuit. Grit is defined as perseverance and passion for long-term goals and consists of two distinct dimensions: perseverance of effort and consistency of interest (Duckworth et al., 2007; Von Culin et al., 2014). Research in sport contexts suggests that while perseverance of effort supports sustained performance and coping with physical demands, consistency of interest may be more strongly associated with career longevity and continued participation (Tedesqui & Young, 2017). Recent findings further indicate that these two dimensions do not operate uniformly and may have different psychological consequences depending on contextual and cognitive factors (Mosewich et al., 2021). One such cognitive factor is rumination, defined as repetitive thinking about one’s emotions, problems, or experiences (Nolen-Hoeksema et al., 2008). Importantly, rumination is a multidimensional construct. Brooding rumination is characterised by passive self-focus and negative comparison, and is generally associated with maladaptive outcomes such as stress, burnout, and reduced well-being. In contrast, reflective rumination involves deliberate self-examination aimed at understanding experiences and may facilitate learning and adaptive coping (Treynor et al., 2003; Eikey et al., 2021). In sport psychology, rumination has traditionally been treated as a risk factor (Rice et al., 2016), yet recent studies suggest that reflective forms may play a constructive role in athlete development, particularly when supported by structured environments and effective coping strategies (Karafil & Pehlivan, 2025). The present study is theoretically grounded in an integrative model combining motivational theories of persistence, the dual-component model of grit, and cognitive models of rumination. From this perspective, long-term sport persistence is not merely the result of effortful striving but emerges from the interaction between sustained interest and adaptive cognitive processing of challenges. Grit provides motivational stability, while rumination shapes how athletes interpret setbacks, regulate emotions, and integrate experiences into their self-concept (Duckworth et al., 2016). The primary objective of the study was to explore the interrelationships among sport persistence, grit, and rumination in adolescent and young adult athletes. Specifically, the study aimed (1) to examine the associations between sport persistence, the two dimensions of grit, and the two forms of rumination; (2) to test the mediating role of brooding and reflective rumination in the relationship between grit and sport persistence; and (3) to identify distinct psychological athlete profiles based on these variables using a person-centred approach. By addressing these aims, the study seeks to contribute to a more nuanced understanding of psychological mechanisms underlying sustained sport participation and to inform targeted coaching and sport psychology interventions. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The study employed a cross-sectional quantitative research design based on nationwide data collection. Participants were adolescent and young adult athletes aged 14–25 years who engaged in regular sport activity at least three times per week and were enrolled in secondary or higher education. After data cleaning, the final sample consisted of 1105 athletes, representing a wide range of sport types, participation levels, and competitive backgrounds. Data were collected between January and June 2024. Participants completed an online questionnaire comprising four main sections: sociodemographic variables, sport- and health-related questions, academic background, and psychological measurement instruments. Sociodemographic variables included gender, age, educational level, type of residence, and parental educational attainment and labour market status. Sport-related variables covered frequency of sport participation, club membership, type of sport (individual vs. team), and level of competition. Sport persistence was measured using the Sport Persistence Questionnaire, a 13-item unidimensional scale assessing long-term commitment to sport. Grit was assessed using the 12-item Grit Scale, capturing perseverance of effort and consistency of interest as separate subscales. Rumination was measured with the Ruminative Response Scale, focusing on brooding and reflective rumination. All instruments demonstrated satisfactory to excellent internal consistency in the present sample. Data analysis proceeded in several steps. Descriptive statistics and non-parametric group comparisons (Mann–Whitney U and Kruskal–Wallis tests) were conducted to examine differences across sociodemographic and sport-related variables. Mediation analyses were performed to test whether brooding and reflective rumination mediated the relationship between grit dimensions and sport persistence. Besides, cluster analysis was applied to identify athlete profiles based on standardised scores of persistence, grit, and rumination. Internal validation methods, including silhouette analysis and the elbow method, were used to determine the optimal number of clusters. Finally, clusters were compared across sociodemographic and sport-related characteristics using cross-tabulation and chi-square tests. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The findings demonstrate that the two dimensions of grit play different roles in sustaining sport persistence. Consistency of interest emerged as the strongest and most robust predictor of sport persistence, showing a direct and significant positive effect. In contrast, perseverance of effort did not exert a significant direct influence on persistence, indicating that effort alone is insufficient to explain long-term engagement in sport. Brooding rumination was not significantly associated with sport persistence, suggesting that maladaptive, passive repetitive thinking does not meaningfully contribute to athletes’ continued participation. In contrast, reflective rumination showed a significant positive relationship with sport persistence, indicating that athletes who are able to consciously reflect on their experiences and draw constructive conclusions are more likely to remain engaged in sport over time. Reflective rumination partially mediated the relationship between grit and persistence, highlighting its adaptive function within the motivational process. Perseverance of effort was negatively associated with both brooding and reflective rumination, suggesting that athletes who invest high levels of effort tend to engage less in repetitive cognitive processing. The cluster analysis identified three distinct athlete profiles: ruminative passive athletes, ruminative persistent athletes, and non-ruminative persistent athletes. These profiles differed significantly in sport type, level of participation, club membership, and family background characteristics. Non-ruminative persistent athletes displayed the highest levels of sport persistence and consistency of interest, coupled with low rumination. Ruminative persistent athletes showed moderate persistence and high reflective rumination, while ruminative passive athletes were characterised by low persistence and weaker motivational resources. Overall, the results indicate that sustained sport participation is primarily supported by long-term interest regulation and adaptive reflective processing, rather than by effort alone. Structured sport environments and supportive social contexts appear to function as protective factors that reduce maladaptive rumination and foster enduring engagement in sport.
