Paper “Spaces to Code to Dialogue”: Reflections from an Educational Innovation Project on Dialogic Spaces in Higher Education in Polarized Times University of Utrecht, Netherlands, The Presenting Author:Abstract
This article presents insights from a two-year educational innovation project (August 2023–July 2025) conducted in the Education and Pedagogy programmes at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. The project focused on creating dialogic spaces for engaging with sensitive and controversial topics and was developed in response to a growing demand for opportunities that enable meaningful dialogue between students and lecturers on contentious social and political issues in higher education.
Drawing on project-based data, our analysis pursues three interconnected aims. First, we offer a reflective analysis of the dialogue project to contribute to practical knowledge about the design and implementation of such interventions in universities internationally. Second, we situate both the project and our reflections within the historical, current, and anticipated socio-institutional context of European higher education, particularly its ongoing struggle to engage productively with diversity and controversy. In doing so, we reflect on the broader need for dialogical initiatives in universities across different contexts. Third, informed by a cultural-historical activity theory perspective on learning, we use these analyses to critically examine underlying assumptions about the purposes of learning and education in universities, with particular attention to how diversity and controversy are currently managed. In this discussion, we engage with competing expectations and assumptions concerning academic freedom, divergent political values, ideological positions, and the responsibilities of higher education institutions in responding to these dynamics.
Dialogue initiatives at universities In recent years, we are observing that universities are confronting wider social polarization, in which complex and often painful issues, such as the wars in Gaza and Ukraine, climate change, or “woke” culture, make their way into academic life. We see lecturers and students expressing their views on specific conflicts in different ways. These can range from staying silent to sharing one’s own opinion and emotions during a lecture, to demonstrating, or even occupying university buildings. Parallel to these developments, at many universities, both in the Netherlands and internationally, there has been increased attention to the question of how lecturers and students can engage in a meaningful conversation about sensitive issues (Shaffer and Longo, 2023). Although dialogue trainings in which students learn how to conduct dialogue on sensitive topics with people who hold a different position or come from a different background are not a new phenomenon in higher education, the recent politicized context asks for a rethinking of such interventions. Politicization of Higher Education Recent political tensions have heightened the relevance of such interventions for universities in Europe and beyond. Despite the fact that many universities have developed support provisions for lecturers, and in some cases for students, to facilitate conversations on so-called “hot topics,” there remains limited scholarly attention to the analysis of these initiatives, particularly with regard to the nature of the increased demand for them and the characteristics of the interventions themselves. This lack of analysis may, on the one hand, be related to the ways in which topics concerning social justice, diversity, and inclusion are subject to censorship or de-prioritization (Garces et al. 2025; Darian-Smith 2025), while, on the other hand, equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) policies, including those related to dialogic pedagogies, may be adopted by university management as a result of external policy pressures and accountability regimes without substantial ownership or involvement from university staff and students (Cho et al. 2024; Walker 2025). Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Methods Background and project description In the academic year 2022–2023, both our master’s and bachelor’s programs in Pedagogical Sciences encountered several instances in which students critically evaluated teaching content. These often concerned examples used in lectures on inclusion and the representation of diverse perspectives and student populations. We addressed these situations through individual teacher–student conversations and group sessions involving students and teachers. Nevertheless, both the teaching team and a group of master’s students expressed a need for clearer guidelines for handling such confrontational situations in teaching. Following an initial student-led initiative to explore dialogue between teachers and students and to articulate shared guiding values, the idea for an educational innovation project emerged. The project aimed to develop a “living code of conduct” consisting of principles, core values, attitudes, and speech rules to support teachers and students in addressing sensitive issues in our programs. The term “living” highlights the dynamic and situational nature of these rules, allowing them to evolve over time. After each event, written participant feedback was collected and discussed in project team meetings to refine the code. Research questions and analytical approach In this paper, we address the following research questions: • What does this dialogue project reveal about the learning processes involved in the design and implementation of dialogic initiatives in higher education? • How can the project’s design—and comparable initiatives globally—be understood within historical, institutional, national, and global contexts, particularly in relation to the political dimensions of diversity and inclusion, societal conflict, and academic freedom? • Building on these analyses, how do universities learn collectively as organizations when responding to such challenges, and how are these collective learning processes envisioned, enabled, or constrained? Methodologically, our analytical approach integrates a case-study approach (Stake 1995) with critical incident analysis (Halquist and Musanti 2010). Our data consist of meeting reports, project minutes, teachers’ and students’ written evaluative reflections on the living code after dialogue sessions, as well as descriptions of incidents gathered over a two-year period. To analyze our collective experiences, we apply a cultural-historical activity theory (CHAT) perspective alongside work on societal polarization and its impact on academia. While CHAT provides a lens for understanding these experiences as collective, transformative learning processes in times of rapid sociopolitical change (Adams-Wiggins, 2024), Morin and colleagues (1999) notion of “poly-crisis” informs our analysis of how such crises affect academic communities. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Findings and conclusion The findings illustrate how dialogical spaces, such as the ones constructed by our educational innovation project, enable the reflection on and reconsideration of teaching practices, student engagement and critical thinking, next to the limitations and boundaries of such spaces in terms of power relationships, emotional labor, and institutional expectations. For instance, we found that “hot” cases, tied to ongoing conflicts, are emotionally charged yet highly instructive, whereas “cold” cases provide reflective practice. Persistent dilemmas involve power asymmetries, minority–majority relations, and the tension between spontaneity and institutionalization. Nevertheless, the project illustrates that openness, flexibility, and bottom-up rule-setting foster ownership and engagement, which allow us to pose that this kind of open, bottom-up initiatives contribute to re-imagining universities as communities where friction and disagreement are not suppressed, but cultivated as productive elements of academic life (Parra et al., 2021). In our analytical reflections, we problematize the managerial approach to controversial topics in university settings and underscore the intertwined nature of academic freedom, discomfort and disagreement, particularly so in the social sciences. The paper finally presents a reflection on the boundary between teaching in the social sciences and the assumed political neutrality of higher education, while also offering perspectives that can address such tensions from CHAT scholarship, such as polyphony, multivoicedness, collective agency (Adams-Wiggins, 2024), or redistribution of authorship (Gutierrez et al. 2019). In conclusion, the implications of these are offered for educational developers and policymakers in higher education seeking to support teachers in addressing controversial topics in their teaching. Paper Telling Visual Stories with AI: An Educational Experience in Pre-Service Primary Teacher Education Univerisity of Turin, Italy Presenting Author:The contemporary era is marked by a strong acceleration in knowledge production processes and an unprecedented proliferation of information. In this context, the diffusion of generative artificial intelligence (AI) highlights the need for pedagogical and critical work that does not focus exclusively on the technology itself, but rather on its educational and cultural implications. In particular, teachers and future teachers are increasingly required to address these transformations within competence-based educational design. A crucial aspect concerns the growing role of content—both textual and visual—often produced or mediated by AI. While such content is highly persuasive, it frequently conveys partial, fragmented, or simplified representations of complex phenomena. As a result, knowledge construction increasingly relies on visual and audiovisual languages. Research by Chang, Yang, and Wong (2024) shows that AI has become an integral part of everyday life and that, already in primary school, children develop preconceptions and representations related to AI. In this scenario (Manovich, 2016; Panciroli & Rivoltella, 2023) the role of algorithms in shaping information flows. Social media environments, where images and short videos dominate both the production and circulation of knowledge, represent a paradigmatic example of this process. Although the human brain is intrinsically visual (Robertson, 2011), formal schooling has historically privileged verbal language, marginalizing systematic education in visual creativity and visual language. This imbalance becomes particularly problematic in contexts where knowledge is increasingly mediated through images and videos. As Lakoff and Johnson (1980) and Black (1983) argue, a fundamental characteristic of human thinking is its metaphorical and creative nature: meaning is constructed through processes of projection, analogy, and imagination. Images, therefore, are not merely illustrative supports, but cognitive devices that actively participate in shaping plural, situated, and culturally embedded representations of the world. Within this framework, AI emerges as a central actor in meaning-making processes. The systematic review by Heigl (2025) highlights how professional artists recognize AI as a powerful tool for creativity, while simultaneously stressing the importance of human agency in the construction of meaning. Similarly, Yaşar et al. (2025) show that university students tend to conceptualize creativity not only as an individual capacity to generate novelty, but as a competence situated within hybrid cultural ecosystems in which AI acts as a mediator. These authors frame prompt literacy not as a purely technical skill, but as an educational, cultural, and ethical issue. From a more instrumental perspective, Mujica-Sequera (2025) defines prompting as a lever of cognitive efficiency aimed at formulating effective queries, optimizing data processing, and identifying patterns. AI currently functions as a synthesizer of information: the images it generates tend to be generic, idealized, and stereotyped, privileging iconic and recognizable elements while excluding the ordinary, the marginal, and the everyday (Manovich, 2025). Converging evidence is provided by Freixa et al. (2025), whose analysis of 600 images shows that AI-generated visuals respond more precisely and coherently to textual prompts. However, this very alignment reinforces dominant visual schemas, making stereotypes more efficient, reproducible, and standardized, while reducing the semantic and narrative complexity of representations. In this scenario the DigComp 3.0 (Cosgrove & Cachia, 2025) highlights a strong emphasis on critical digital literacy, where the production and interpretation of texts and images require reflective and critical thinking in order to counter processes of semantic homogenization. In light of this theoretical framework, the present paper analyses video stories created by pre-service primary teachers enrolled in the Primary Teacher Education programme at the University of Turin, within the course Educational Technologies. The study is situated in an innovative learning environment that integrates artificial intelligence both as a tool for digital artefact production and as an object of critical reflection. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The study adopts a qualitative research design, supported by descriptive quantitative analysis, and is grounded in a deliberately designed innovative learning environment. The research sample consists of 170 educational video stories produced by second-year students enrolled in the Educational Technologies course during the 2024/2025 academic year. The activity was embedded in regular course assessment, ensuring the inclusion of the entire cohort and avoiding self-selection bias. The learning activity was structured through a shared pedagogical design framework. Students were provided with a design grid guiding the development of each video story, requiring them to define the title, narrative incipit, educational objectives, target audience, didactic function, visual and narrative coherence, and the AI prompts used for image generation. To ensure both creative freedom and analytical comparability, students selected one narrative incipit from a curated set of ten prompts designed to encourage imaginative and metaphorical storytelling. The choice of storytelling as the central pedagogical approach was intentional. Storytelling was adopted as it fosters reflective and critical engagement with the content to be communicated, requiring students to make explicit decisions about meaning, perspective, and relevance.t (Bruner, 1996). A key pedagogical requirement was the explicit request to create images that went beyond simple referential representation. Students were encouraged to generate metaphorical and evocative images capable of conveying abstract concepts, emotions, and educational meanings through visual symbolism. The analytical process was articulated across two main dimensions: visual analysis and narrative-textual analysis. The visual analysis followed a semiotic approach and was conducted using an ad hoc image analysis grid specifically developed for this study. This grid enabled the systematic classification of AI-generated images according to: (a) type of representation (metaphorical, referential, decorative); (b) type of meaning conveyed (symbolic, evocative, illustrative); (c) recurrence of visual representations, identifying dominant iconographic elements The narrative and textual analysis was conducted using qualitative content analysis. Video narratives were examined through the lens of narrative grammar, focusing on narrative sequence, character roles, plot development, and thematic organisation. Particular attention was paid to the type of incipit selected and its influence on narrative progression. Emerging themes were identified through inductive coding, allowing for the identification of recurring narrative structures and educational motifs. By combining a semiotic image analysis grid with qualitative content analysis of narratives, the methodology enabled a systematic exploration of how generative AI mediates visual meaning-making and narrative construction within an innovative learning environment. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The analysis is currently ongoing; however, findings from a first cycle of qualitative content analysis focusing on textual prompts and narrative structures already reveal significant patterns in AI-supported storytelling. Based on the preliminary analysis of 170 video artefacts, students’ textual prompts show a strong tendency towards structural regularity. In particular, the majority of prompts follow a recurrent syntactic sequence (e.g. subject–action–setting–style), with limited variation in linguistic formulation and descriptive depth. This suggests an early convergence towards perceived “effective” or “safe” prompting strategies when interacting with generative AI systems. From a narrative perspective, initial content analysis indicates that over two thirds of the video stories adopt linear and familiar narrative trajectories, characterised by emotionally stable characters, predictable developments, and limited narrative tension. The choice of incipit plays a relevant role in this convergence: a small subset of incipit types was selected by a majority of students, and these incipits often oriented the narratives towards reassuring, emotionally positive, and educationally conventional storylines. Emerging themes frequently revolve around exploration, discovery, care, and personal growth, with relatively limited narrative divergence. These preliminary findings provide a partial but substantial response to the first research questions. They shed light on how students use generative AI through textual prompts and narrative construction within an innovative learning environment, and they highlight recurring narrative and linguistic patterns that point towards processes of standardisation. The analysis of AI-generated images is currently ongoing and will complement these findings by offering a systematic semiotic examination of visual representations and imaginaries. Paper Risks, Knowledge, and Skills for Students of Helping Professions to Become Vicariously Resilient: What Researchers are Telling Us? 1: Vytautas Magnus university, Lithuania; 2: Tampere University, Finland; 3: Kaunas Third Age University, Lithuania; 4: Lithuanian Educational Research Association, LERA, Lithuania Presenting Author:Contemporary labour markets and welfare systems are increasingly shaped by rapid economic, technological, and social change, also overlapping crises that continuously transform professional practice. The resilience of helping professionals has become a critical issue, particularly in terms of their ability to adapt to changing demands while maintaining professional competence and well-being. Resilience is often framed as an individual capacity to cope with uncertainty; however, such an approach risks overlooking the role of education, organisational support, and institutional frameworks. There is relatively little research on the promotion of students of helping professions’ vicarious resiliency as a relatively innovative concept in the curriculum of higher education which appears to hold varying meanings. This contribution adopts a reflexive perspective on the preparation of helping professionals, focusing on how training and professional development can strengthen their capacity to respond to contemporary challenges in a sustainable and structurally supported manner. Many helping professions’ professional practice in the field (social work, nursing, doctors, educators etc.) is fundamentally relational, with the creation of value-based, supportive, growth-oriented, and healing relationships constituting its central task. They routinely deal with service users who are in vulnerable life situations and disclose traumatic experiences. A key complexity of professions grounded in relational work lies in the fact that harmful experiences are not always immediately visible or explicitly articulated. In many cases, helping professionals are exposed to the same or similar circumstances as the individuals they support, which blurs the boundary between professional and personal experience. This shared exposure makes it particularly challenging to recognise, reflect on, and address the cumulative impact of such experiences, while simultaneously sustaining professional functioning and well-being. Because of the nature of their work, students who study to become professionals working with people in vulnerable life situations need assistance in the development of effective coping strategies. Because challenges such as isolation, exposure to adversity, and burnout often arise through close and sustained engagement with those receiving support, it is essential for future helping professionals to develop resilience and sustainable self-care strategies. The risk for compassion fatigue can be argued to be relatively high when one is still learning a new profession as a student, and during the first years of practice, when the tools and techniques are still relatively new and possibly just developing. For this reason it is important to enlarge the curriculum of higher education with innovative concepts such as vicarious resiliency. This paper presents a joint research initiative integrating two complementary research trajectories. The first trajectory builds on our previous continuing research conducted at Vytautas Magnus University and the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, which substantiates the importance of interprofessional collaboration between social workers and other helping professionals in creating and sustaining a person’s supportive social environment (Bruneviciute et al., 2007; Veckiene & Eidukeviciute, 2009; Bruneviciute, Veckiene et al., 2011). These studies highlight that complex social problems require coordinated professional responses that extend beyond individual disciplinary boundaries. The second research trajectory focuses on strengthening professional resilience within the contemporary labour market, particularly when working with highly complex and vulnerable client groups (Pirskanen, Eidukeviciute, Daugeliene, 2025). This line of inquiry explores how professionals can maintain emotional sustainability, professional effectiveness, and ethical sensitivity while simultaneously mobilising external resources available in the broader social, organisational, and community environment. By integrating these two perspectives, the joint research aims to analyse how interprofessional collaboration and external resource utilisation contribute to resilience-building among helping professionals. The study emphasises the dynamic interaction between individual professional capacities, organisational contexts, and intersectoral cooperation, proposing a holistic framework for supporting professionals facing increasing demands and structural pressures in modern social service systems Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Our aim is to investigate existing international research literature on social workers’ vicarious resiliency by using theory-driven, integrative meta-analysis, and outline the guidelines to implement the innovative concept of vicarious resiliency in the curriculum of higher education. We use theory-driven meta-analysis in our study. Although our focus of the meta-analysis is on social workers and social work students, the study has applicability in many fields in which future professionals work with service users. Our research questions for meta-analysis are: 1) What skills and knowledge are needed to become vicariously resilient professionals? 2) What risks can be recognized dealing with emphatic engagement with traumatic experiences and materials of clients? This study is based on a scoping review aimed at mapping existing research on vicarious resilience across different professional fields. Metadata were collected from four databases: ProQuest, Scopus, EBSCOhost, and Google Scholar. The review included research-based quantitative and qualitative articles published in international peer-reviewed journals and written in English. The search was conducted using the terms “vicarious resilience” and “vicarious resiliency.” The selected studies were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The presentation introduces and discusses the preliminary findings of the review. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings We argue that promoting the well-being of helping professionals and future professionals requires systematic value-based knowledge of best practices for strengthening resilience and self-care. While resilience is often conceptualised as an individual capacity, this contribution emphasises that inner resilience alone is insufficient. Organisational structures, professional environments, and external forms of support play a crucial role in enabling sustainable resilience among helping professionals. Particular attention is given to the concept of vicarious resilience and to the question of how professionals’ personal experiences of trauma may influence their capacity to develop resilience through relational work with others. Based on the preliminary findings of a scoping review, the presentation outlines practice-oriented recommendations aimed at fostering vicarious resilience in education, organisational settings, and professional practice. In particular, fostering vicarious resilience among students and future professionals poses significant challenges, as it requires the capacity to reflect on others’ experiences of adversity and to recognise relational sources of resilience—processes that are not easily supported within existing training structures. By shifting the analytical focus away from individualised responsibility and towards organisational, educational, and structural conditions, this contribution highlights the need for innovative approaches within social and educational systems that enable sustainable resilience rather than reinforcing narratives of individual failure. Qualitative research highlights vicarious resilience as encompassing changes in professional goals and priorities, increased hope and self-care, strengthened personal resilience and perspective, heightened awareness of power and privilege, and an enhanced capacity to engage with trauma narratives, while emphasising that professional and personal boundary-setting, collaborative relationships, and a strengths-based approach constitute essential elements of professional and innovative training focused not only on knowledge acquisition but also on the development of personal competencies. Paper When Learning Becomes a Shared Challenge: Designing Transnational Learning Environments for Teacher Educators Pädagogische Hochschule Ludwigsburg, Germany Presenting Author:As learning environments become increasingly diverse, teacher educators are challenged to design pedagogical approaches that are inclusive, innovative, and responsive to digital transformation, as well as processes of internationalisation (Oesterle, 2025; Rindenow et al., 2025; Symeonidis & Impedovo, 2025). Digital competence encompasses not only subject-specific and didactic knowledge, but also the capacity to critically reflect on and actively reshape teaching practices in response to digital change (Engeness, 2021; Nagel, 2025). During the pandemic, many educators transferred their traditional practices one-to-one into an online format, without adapting the content or the pedagogy (Popov et al., 2025). However, particularly considering advances in AI, teacher educators are now expected to make informed pedagogical decisions, to select and adapt digital tools purposefully, and to engage in reflective practice that transforms learning environments rather than merely digitising existing routines. This paper examines the implementation of an innovative, transnational continuing professional development (CPD) programme designed for teacher educators at university-level. The programme was developed as part of an Erasmus+ Project, digiTED, with ran from 2022 to 2025 and was tested three times. Combining pedagogical creativity, emerging technologies, and interdisciplinary, transnational collaboration the programme ensures that the participants do not merely receive digital training but actively engage in experiential learning, co-creation, and reflection. Thereby, it moves beyond passive training models by incorporating Challenge-Based Learning (Costa et al., 2018), Gamification (Pujolà & Nonell, 2025) and Learning Experience Design (Kircher et al., 2021), ensuring that participants engage deeply with digital tools through real-world problem-solving. Unlike conventional workshops that focus on tool demonstrations, this programme challenges educators to design and develop their own educational escape games, fostering creativity, innovation, and hands-on experimentation both during a short-term mobility, as well as within a virtual makerspace. This paper presents findings from an empirical, longitudinal study conducted within the Erasmus+ project, drawing on data from three cohorts of teacher educators who participated in the programme. The study is based on data from 55 teacher educators from Germany, Ireland, Spain, Sweden, and Estonia. Participants represented diverse disciplinary backgrounds, professional roles, and levels of digital competence. The study adopts an experiential and interpretive perspective. Rather than focusing on effectiveness or predefined learning outcomes, it seeks to understand how teacher educators experienced, perceived, and evaluated this form of transnational collaboration as a professional learning environment. Particular attention is paid to how transcultural group work, multimodal game design, and virtual elements shaped participants’ engagement, collaboration, and sense-making processes. Data were collected through surveys, interviews, reflective artefacts, and observations and analysed thematically. Findings indicate that dialogue and challenge-based design were central to professional learning. The shared task of collaboratively developing a multimodal escape game fostered sustained exchange, collective problem-solving, and peer learning, which participants valued more highly than tool-focused training. Transnational and interdisciplinary group work was experienced as inspiring and inclusive, supported by multimodality and linguistically mixed groups, while also limiting subject-specific depth. Time and space for dialogue, including informal and social activities, were consistently highlighted as crucial for meaningful collaboration. In this paper presentation, the authors will illustrate the design of a novel transnational CPD programme for teacher educators, outlining the pedagogical framework and the innovative methodologies and activities employed, including challenge-based learning, collaborative escape game design, and virtual formats. It then reports empirical findings from a longitudinal study based on a rich, multimodal data corpus comprising surveys, interviews, reflective artefacts, observations, and design outputs. Finally, the paper discusses implications for the design of transnational, collaborative learning environments, highlighting how physical and virtual learning spaces can be intentionally combined to support dialogue, collaboration, and inclusive professional learning. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study employed an empirical mixed-methods design to explore how participants experienced, perceived, and evaluated their participation and learning during the CPD programme, as well as how they reflected on the integration of these experiences into their teaching practice. Data were collected across three iterations of the CPD programme conducted within the Erasmus+ project. A pre-, post-, and follow-up survey design was used to capture participants’ backgrounds, expectations, experiences, and reflections over time. Surveys included scale-based and open-ended items addressing participants’ motivation, perceived development in digital teaching, collaboration experiences, and reflections on transfer into practice. In total, all 55 participants completed the survey sequence. Qualitative data were generated through semi-structured video interviews conducted at the end of each Innovation Week (n = 55), multimodal interactions documented on online collaborative boards (including written, visual, audio, and video contributions), reflective podcasts produced after the programme, and collaboratively developed CPD outputs, most notably multimodal educational escape games. Quantitative survey data were analysed descriptively and through paired comparisons to explore changes in participants’ self-reported perceptions over time and to contextualise qualitative findings (Creswell, 2013). Qualitative data were analysed using a qualitative content analysis approach. Analysis proceeded through iterative coding cycles. First, all qualitative materials were familiarised and open-coded to identify recurring themes related to collaboration, dialogue, multimodality, learning-space affordances, and professional reflection. Based on this initial coding, analytical categories were developed inductively and refined through constant comparison across data sources. In a second step, categories were applied systematically to the full dataset, allowing for differentiation between shared patterns and divergent experiences across cohorts. To enhance analytical rigour, findings were triangulated across multiple data sources (Suter, 2012), including interviews, survey responses, online board interactions, podcasts, and design artefacts. Quantitative and qualitative findings were integrated during interpretation to develop a comprehensive understanding of participants’ experiences over time. All data were fully anonymised prior to analysis, and ethical principles of informed consent, voluntary participation, confidentiality, and secure data handling were applied throughout the study. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This study contributes to research on innovative methodologies in diverse learning environments by examining how a transnational CPD programme enable digital professional learning through dialogue, challenge-based design, and multimodal engagement. The findings demonstrate that professional learning emerged less from the transmission of predefined content and more from participatory, dialogic processes embedded in intentionally designed physical, and virtual learning spaces. Central to the programme was a challenge-based, game-design methodology, which required participants to collaboratively develop multimodal educational escape games. This shared design challenge created a learner-centred environment that fostered autonomy, collaboration, and collective sense-making. The need to jointly solve a pedagogical problem transformed diversity within the groups into a productive resource, as participants negotiated meanings, approaches, and design decisions across cultural, linguistic, and disciplinary differences. The findings further underscore the importance of learning-space design. Flexible physical spaces, combined with digital infrastructures such as a virtual makerspace and inspirational design guides, enabled multimodal engagement and supported sustained collaboration beyond the face-to-face phase. Here, the programme also connects to research on virtual exchange, which highlights the role of digitally mediated, dialogic collaboration in supporting intercultural learning and professional reflection beyond physical mobility (O’Dowd, 2021; Schwab & Drixler, 2020). The findings suggest, however, that such exchanges become particularly meaningful when embedded in shared, challenge-based tasks and combined with physical co-presence within virtual learning environments. At the same time, the interdisciplinary and transnational composition of the groups revealed productive tensions. While participants valued the variety of perspectives and intercultural dialogue, the collaborative focus on shared challenges limited opportunities for deep disciplinary engagement. In line with previous studies, participants identified time and space for dialogue, including informal and social interactions, as among the most valuable aspects of the programme (Oesterle, 2025; Popov et al, 2025).
