Paper Experiential Intercultural Learning through Online Intercultural Exchange to Foster Intercultural Awareness Vilnius University, Lithuania Presenting Author:The aim of this study is to explore how embedding Online Intercultural Exchange (OIE) in an Intercultural Communication course enables students to experience, interpret, and apply intercultural awareness in practice, focusing on the reflective, interpretive, and meaning-making processes that form a foundational stage preceding full intercultural competence. The study seeks to understand how students engage with diverse cultural perspectives, critically examine their own assumptions, and develop a deeper understanding of intercultural interaction within an international, digitally mediated learning environment. The study investigates OIE as an experiential digital learning environment in which students actively co-construct knowledge of culture through interaction and reflection. In line with the European Commission’s Virtual Exchanges in Higher Education and Youth initiative, which recognizes that virtual exchange complements but cannot replace physical mobility, the study foregrounds intercultural awareness rather than intercultural competence. Intercultural awareness emphasizes recognition, understanding, and critical reflection on one’s own and others’ cultural assumptions, communication styles, and behaviors, coupled with the ability to adapt perception and interaction accordingly (Byram, 1997; Deardorff, 2006; Fantini, 2009). Key dimensions include self-awareness, other-awareness, perspective-taking, behavioral adaptation, and critical reflection. Awareness forms a foundational component of competence, focusing on reflective understanding rather than demonstrated performance. This study is guided by the key question: how does embedding OIE within an Intercultural Communication course enable students to experience, interpret, and apply intercultural awareness in practice? To explore this main question in depth, the study examines three interrelated dimensions. First, it investigates which aspects of intercultural awareness students experience, both explicitly and implicitly, as they engage with peers from diverse cultural backgrounds. Second, it examines how students apply this awareness in their interactions, adapting communication strategies and collaborating effectively across cultural contexts. Finally, the study considers the practical and pedagogical challenges associated with integrating OIE into higher education, identifying potential drawbacks and limitations that may inform future curriculum design and teaching practices. Together, these research questions enable the study to capture both the experiential and reflective dimensions of intercultural learning while situating the findings within broader discussions of inclusive, digitally-mediated internationalisation in higher education. The study integrates intercultural communication theory, experiential and transformative learning theory, and critical intercultural pedagogy. Edward T. Hall’s phenomenological concepts of high- and low-context communication, time, and space (Hall, 1959, 1976) illuminate the tacit dimensions of culture revealed in misunderstanding, pacing, and negotiation. Kolb’s experiential learning cycle (1984) frames OIE as a process moving from concrete experience to reflective observation and conceptual reinterpretation. Transformative learning theory (Mezirow, 1991) and reflective learning theory (Moon, 2004) account for dissonant experiences that challenge assumptions and foster perspective shifts. Cultural dimensions theory (Hofstede, 2001) is used critically to highlight tensions between abstract models and the complexity of lived intercultural interaction (Kramsch, 2009; Baker, 2015). Contemporary OIE scholarship emphasizes learner agency, reflective dialogue, and negotiation in international contexts (O’Dowd & Lewis, 2016; Dooly & Helm, 2018; Baker, 2021; Helm, 2023; Guth & Helm, 2022). Data derived from a 6-week OIE project involving 105 students from Vilnius University, University of Latvia, Universidad Austral de Chile, and National Louis University (USA). Teams included students from Europe and non-European universities, reflecting inclusive internationalisation practices. The study aligns with EU policy goals promoting digital mobility, intercultural competence, and inclusion (Erasmus+ Programme Guide 2021–2027; Digital Education Action Plan 2021–2027; Virtual Exchanges in Higher Education and Youth initiative, European Commission, 2021; 2024; 2025). This study contributes to European and international educational research by investigating the reflective, interpretive, meaning-making dimension of intercultural awareness, highlighting how structured virtual exchanges support critical reflection, learner agency, and preparation for intercultural competence. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The study employs a qualitative interpretive research design, focusing on students’ reflective meaning-making and epistemological engagement in intercultural interaction (Denzin & Lincoln, 2018; Creswell & Poth, 2018). This approach is often used to investigate intercultural awareness as a reflective and interpretive process that precedes competence. The empirical context is a 6-week OIE project embedded in an elective Intercultural Communication course at Vilnius University during Autumn 2025. The project involved 105 students from four universities: Vilnius University (Lithuania), University of Latvia (Latvia), Universidad Austral de Chile (Chile), and National Louis University (USA). The present study focuses on 32 Lithuanian students, whose reflective journals provide rich qualitative data. Participants from Vilnius University included local and 11 international exchange students. Baltic students were enrolled in the course, while Chilean and U.S. participants joined voluntarily. Students were organized into 33 international teams of three to four members, ensuring collaboration between Baltic students and partners from Chile or the USA. English was the lingua franca. Teams followed a syllabus of 16 thematic topics grouped under Education, National Culture, Language, Media and Communication, and The Future of Human Communication. Two tasks were compulsory: a self-introduction and a comparative chart of national education systems, universities, and the courses offered in them, while the remaining four topics were freely selected by each team, emphasizing learner agency (Benson, 2011). Tasks included multimodal outputs such as videos, podcasts, infographics, posters, and digital stories. Data collection relied primarily on semi-structured Intercultural Journals, completed after each team meeting, prompting reflection on communication challenges, cultural assumptions, emotional responses, and perspective shifts. Journals were complemented by students’ digital artefacts uploaded to MS Teams and weekly progress reports on Padlet, providing contextual and process-oriented data. Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006, 2021). Coding was iterative and theory-informed, identifying patterns relevant to the three sub-questions: aspects of intercultural awareness experienced, application in practice, and practical/pedagogical drawbacks of OIE. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings These conclusions are tentative, as the data are still being labeled, grouped, and interpreted, but emerging trends already provide valuable insights into students’ intercultural learning. Overall, the findings based on 32 Intercultural Journals suggest that embedding OIE in an Intercultural Communication course fosters intercultural awareness across reflective, interpretive, and applied dimensions. Students demonstrated increased self-awareness, recognizing their own cultural assumptions and biases, which often led to a deeper understanding of their native culture. At the same time, they developed other-awareness by noticing differences in partners’ communication norms, pacing, and implicit expectations. Through structured reflection, students engaged in perspective-taking and critically examined stereotypes and preconceptions, showing that even initial encounters can trigger meaningful reconsideration of prior assumptions. In their interactions, students applied intercultural awareness by adapting communication strategies, negotiating meaning collaboratively, and adjusting multimodal outputs to suit diverse partners. Reflection appeared to be iterative, with insights from one interaction informing subsequent tasks, demonstrating how awareness can translate into practical, collaborative problem-solving. The project also revealed practical and pedagogical challenges. Unequal participation, time zone differences, and varying levels of commitment sometimes hindered collaboration, while technical limitations affected certain interactions. Some theoretical concepts proved difficult to translate into lived experience, and reflection-intensive tasks required careful scaffolding. Reduced informal interaction, limited embodied cultural learning compared to face-to-face mobility, and students reported that the project demanded the development of broader organizational and communication skills. Taken together, these tentative findings highlight the importance of learner agency, structured reflection, and team-based collaboration in creating conditions for students to experience, interpret, and apply intercultural awareness. From a European and international perspective, the study supports OIE as an inclusive, digitally mediated form of mobility, contributing to EU goals for intercultural competence, internationalisation, and digital learning. Paper Developing Students’ Intercultural Communicative Competence in Higher Education Institutions in Five European Countries Turiba University, Latvia Presenting Author:The growing internationalization of higher education (HE), the expansion of remote work opportunities, and multicultural and multilingual teamwork underscore the need for continued research on intercultural communicative competence development in HE. The term ‘communicative competence’ was introduced in the 1960s, and its main premise was not only grammatically and linguistically correct language acquisition, but appropriate language use in definite situations (Hymes, 1972). From the 1960s to the 1990s, the approach had been developing, and many classifications were designed. The most prominent ones are those by Canale & Swain (1980), Canale (1983), Bachman & Palmer (1982). In 1995, the first pedagogically motivated model of communicative competence was developed by Celce-Murcia, Dörnyei, & Thurrell (1995, 9-12). In the 21st century, the theory of communicative competence continues to develop. Culture and language are interconnected, and they influence one another. As Byram (1989) notes, learning a language involves developing cultural awareness, and using that language further enables learners to engage with members of the culture it represents. Thus, the term ‘intercultural competence’ was introduced. According to Wang and Dai (2024), intercultural competence is associated with intercultural interaction, cross-cultural understanding, multiculturalism, cultural awareness, and intercultural communicative competence. Mootoosamy and Aryadoust’s (2024) systematic review of 85 empirical studies shows that communicative competence has been linked to diverse concepts, but two prevailing ones are intercultural communicative competence and multimodal communicative competence. The focus of the current research is the development of students’ intercultural communicative competence, which consists of knowledge, skills, and attitudes that enable effective intercultural communication. Illie (2019) explains that knowledge involves understanding the beliefs, values, norms, and communicative practices characteristic of other cultures. Key skills include observing, listening, analyzing, evaluating, and interpreting, and attitudes comprise ‘respect, openness, and curiosity/discovery’ (Ilie, 2019, 265). Due to internationalization in HE, students bring diverse cultural backgrounds to the classroom. This underscores the importance of designing language‑learning materials that are adapted to learners’ cultural experiences and language proficiency levels, thereby strengthening their capacity to operate effectively in multicultural academic and professional environments where intercultural competence is essential. Furthermore, the student-centred study approach must be applied. Lots of intercultural training approaches exist, each with its own advantages and limitations, including simulations, role‑plays, case studies, various group activities, and online tools, as well as a recently developed innovative method called the “Story Circles”, wherein students exchange their personal experiences demonstrating respect, empathy, and interest in their peers (Deardorff, 2020). The research was conducted within the framework of the Erasmus+ project “Cultural knowledge and language competences as means to develop 21st century skills” involving six Central and Eastern European countries: Croatia, Latvia, Slovenia, Romania, Poland, and the Czech Republic. Its aim was to develop adult learners’ 21st century skills, language and intercultural competences, foster learners’ knowledge of the rich European cultural heritage and its values. A blended‑learning CLIL‑based course for adults was developed and implemented (Coyle, Hood, & Marsh, 2010). It explores Europe’s intangible cultural heritage, including cultural spaces, language and oral traditions, social practices, knowledge and skills, etc. (UNESCO, 2024). The use of CLIL supports two goals: 1) it introduces the cultural context of the target countries and students increase their knowledge of other cultures, which fosters their cultural awareness, and 2) at the same time, they develop their target language skills. The aim of the current research is to evaluate the development of students’ intercultural communicative competence during the course implementation at HEIs in five EU countries. In previous ECERs, the project results from each stage were presented in general. In ECER 2026, the focus will be on students' intercultural communicative competence development in higher education institutions. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The course content is presented as a story that is supported by innovative pedagogical approaches and digital tools – webquests (Perifanou, 2025; Alqahtani, Alfadda, 2025; Wang, Jansrisukot, Narjaikaew, 2025), case studies (Stone, Ineson, 2015), vialogues, design thinking tools (Liedtka, Ogilvie, Brozenske, 2019), interactive games, etc. (cf. E-Learning, n.d.). During the first stage, 18 modules (3 per partner country) were created in English, and during the second stage, these 18 modules were recreated into 9 languages: Croatian, Czech, French, German, Hungarian, Latvian, Polish, Romanian, and Slovenian. This contribution analyses the results obtained during the second stage of course implementation at HEIs in Czechia, Latvia, Slovenia, Romania, and Poland at college, Bachelor's, and Master's level curricula. Research question: Has the created course enhanced the development of students’ intercultural communicative competence, and what improvements are required therein? A comparative research design (Creswell, 2014) has been applied. Data were collected through a cross‑sectional survey of 229 students and interviews of nine course teachers to capture the current state of the research field (Boeren, 2019). The questionnaire comprised three sections; this paper reports results from the first two: (1) respondents’ socio‑demographic characteristics and (2) evaluation of students’ intercultural communicative competence – 21 Likert-scale questions on the course content and the competence development. The interview protocol comprised questions on the course evaluation, students’ success and challenges, during the course acquisition, and assessment of their competence increase. A purposeful research sample was created comprising 32 students from Czechia, 45 from Latvia, 34 from Slovenia, 67 from Romania, and 51 from Poland. The majority were aged 18-24 (87.3%), 52% were female, and 48% male. 12.7% studied education sciences, 20% tourism, 10.9% business and finances, 12.2% economy, 13.5% IT, 18.8% philology, 13.1% management, and 8.7% studied in another field. 108 students (47.2%) studied modules in English, others in Croatian, Latvian, Polish, Romanian, Slovenian, Hungarian, and German. Teachers’ profile: 5 had a PhD degree, 4 Master's degree. Teaching experience: 7-32 years. Data analysis methods: for quantitative data (students’ questionnaire) - descriptive statistics, central tendency measures, inferential statistics tests (Kruskal-Wallis Test, Mann-Whitney Test, Spearman Correlation Test), for qualitative data (teachers’ interviews) thematic analysis were applied. Research limitations: The project was implemented with adult learners in formal, non-formal, and informal learning. This proposal analyses the results obtained only in formal education, from the HE sector. Since the Croatian partner represented secondary vocational education sector, their data are not analysed in this proposal. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Students positively evaluated the course with the means ranging from 3.5109 to 4.0480, mode=4.00. They liked the module they had studied (mean=3.9432, mode=4) and considered it useful (mean=3.8166, mode=4.00). They found the story interesting (mean=4.0393, mode=4.00) and the majority agreed (37.6%) and strongly agreed (49.3%) that they had learnt new cultural information about the topic. Respondents acknowledged that they had developed their language skills (mean=3.5633, mode=4.00, 36.7% agreed, 21.8% agreed strongly, 25.3% were neutral) and intercultural competence (mean=3.7817, mode=4.00, 45% agreed, 22.7% agreed strongly, 23.1% were neutral). Findings showed moderate correlations (Schober, Boer, & Schwarte, 2018, 1765) for most cases. Respondents acknowledging that they had learnt new cultural information liked the module (rs=0.429, p-value=0.000), found the story interesting (rs=0.532, p-value=0.000), and useful (rs=0.482, p-value=0.000). They had developed their language skills (rs=0.263, p-value=0.000) and intercultural competence (rs=0.396, p-value=0.000). There was a positive moderate correlation between the development of language skills and intercultural competence development (rs=0.496, p-value=0.000), which means their development is a mutual process. The results showed that intercultural competence had greater relations with other skills and the course content than the development of the language skills (10 cases of positive moderate correlations vs.6 and 5 cases of positive weak correlations vs. 9). From the teachers’ interviews, such themes were derived: course evaluation, module evaluation, and the development of students’ intercultural communicative competence. Teachers found the course interesting, interactive, and well-structured, and it was easy for them to monitor students’ learning process. They admitted an increase in students’ intercultural communicative competence and pointed to the challenges students faced: too high language level for tasks, not clear enough instructions for interactive tasks, and unwillingness by some students to participate in group discussions. Paper Digitalization of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) Lectures in Higher Education: Theoretical and Practical Perspectives 1: Turiba University, Latvia; 2: Alecu Russo State University of Bălți, Moldova Presenting Author:Digitalization or digital transition is one of the major objectives and challenges in higher education (European Education Area). The use of digital technologies for education and language learning has been extensively researched, including in the field of higher education (Beatty, 2010; Carrier et al., 2017; Cavanaugh et al., 2022; Dumitru, 2023; Gamage et al., 2022). Technology-enhanced language learning (TELL) and Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL), which started in the 1960s (Hampel & Stickler, 2024), have had a significant impact on the methodology of teaching and learning languages, including English for Special Purposes (ESP) (Dou et al., 2023). According to Hampel and Stickler (2024), digitalization has not simply added tools; it has fundamentally transformed the nature of language learning itself. From this perspective, ESP learning has become a complex, multilayered, and dynamic process, comparable to a mosaic of diverse inputs, exposure moments, and learning contexts (Hampel, as cited in Hampel & Stickler, 2024). Today, education takes place both online and in a distance format, with the use of mobile learning (Kukulska-Hulme, as cited in Hampel & Stickler, 2024) and other digital devices, while various platforms, software, and digital tools are also used in the university lecture room. The latest technologies that have emerged are more interactive and collaborative (Kessler, 2018; Godwin-Jones, 2021) and are more focused on student-centeredness and autonomous language learning (Wujec-Kaczmarek, 2021). In this context, the use of different forms of digital devices (a computer, a telephone, a laptop, and a tablet, etc.), as well as the application of different digital tools (tools for language acquisition, production, comprehension, and interaction; Hubbard, as cited in Hampel & Stickler, 2024), makes an ESP lecture a multimodal place and requires students to be multiliterate (Hubbard, as cited in Hampel & Stickler, 2024; Tzirides et al., as cited in Hampel & Stickler, 2024). From a theoretical perspective, a modern ESP lecture can be viewed through the lens of Complex Dynamic Systems Theory (CDST) (Larsen-Freeman, 1997, 2017; Hampel, as cited in Hampel & Stickler, 2024), where language is approached from a broader, more holistic perspective, emphasizing its variability and dynamic interaction and placing at the center interacting elements such as learners, teachers, tools, and the environment. Complex Dynamic Systems Theory helps us understand why multimodality matters in ESP. Since CDST conceptualizes language learning as a complex, non-linear, and socially situated process shaped by multiple interacting factors, multimodal digital environments provide the semiotic, social, and cognitive resources through which learning can emerge and develop over time (Hampel, as cited in Hampel & Stickler, 2024; Larsen-Freeman, 2017). As with all innovations, the application of digital tools raises numerous issues for academia, researchers, and students, such as the benefits and drawbacks of different forms of digital tool use in teaching and learning, the level of digital competence among students who are often considered digital natives (Rathert & Cabaroglu, 2024) and among academic staff, as well as the relevance of specific skills for effective educational practice. The objective of the research is to explore the use and perception of digital technologies in university ESP teaching from the perspective of Complex Dynamic Systems Theory, with particular attention to multimodality, learner interaction, and the interrelation between learners and academic personnel, tools, and learning environments, both within and beyond the university lecture room. Consequently, the main research question is: How do university students use and perceive digital devices, tools, and software for language learning and communication in higher education, both in terms of their own practices and their perceptions of academic staff use? Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The research was conducted as a quantitative descriptive survey (Paltridge & Phakiti, 2015) using a structured, self-administered online questionnaire to collect data on students’ digital device use, software practices, and attitudes toward digital tools in language learning. The descriptive survey was chosen because it is suitable for university-level applied linguistics research, as it enables a current-situation analysis of students’ digital practices in language learning. In an ESP context, it provides empirical insight into actual tool use within specific study programmes. The research is framed as a case study focusing on ESP digital practices in higher education, examined across two institutional sites, with the aim of identifying general tendencies rather than institutional or national differences. A total of 176 participants took part in the study. The respondents were first-, second- and third- year students from Turiba University and Alecu Russo Bălți State University. As the aim of the study was to explore general patterns of digital tool use in language learning rather than to compare institutional or national contexts, the results were analysed as a single dataset. No cross-country or cross-institutional comparisons were conducted. The questionnaire consisted of three parts. The first part collected background information, including demographic data about the respondents. The second part included questions on digital device use in various learning contexts, both in the lecture room and outside the classroom, and covered device use by both students and lecturers. The next section focused on the choice and frequency of use of digital tools and software by students themselves and by language instructors (e.g., Quizlet, Kahoot, Duolingo, PowerPoint, YouTube, AI-based programs) for language learning. The final part gathered participants’ levels of agreement with statements concerning the usefulness of digital tools for language learning (e.g., vocabulary development, pronunciation, reading skills). A Likert-type frequency scale was used for data collection. The primary tool for data collection was an online questionnaire created and administered via Google Forms. Participants accessed the survey link and completed the questionnaire online on a voluntary basis. All responses were automatically recorded in Google’s system and stored in spreadsheet format, which eliminated manual data entry errors and facilitated subsequent data processing. Data were collected between December 1 and December 29, 2025. The inclusion criterion was that all respondents had to be current university students attending English language courses at their institutions. Ethical procedures were observed throughout the study, including informed consent and assurances of confidentiality and anonymity. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The study examined how students use and perceive digital devices and tools for language learning and communication in higher education. The results indicate that mobile phones (always/often, 80%) and laptops (65%) are the most commonly used devices in the lecture room, while desktop computers ( 25%) are used rarely. Tablets, smart TVs, and e-readers are rarely employed (15%). Outside the lecture room, the use of laptops (90%) and mobile phones (85%) becomes even more dominant, confirming their central role in students’ independent language learning. With regard to digital tools and software, students most frequently use YouTube (68.5%), PowerPoint (63.7%), and Canva (57%) for language learning outside the lecture room. In contrast, institutional and interactive platforms such as Padlet, Edmodo, Mentimeter, Moodle, Socrative, and Miro are used by a relatively small number of students. Students’ perceptions of academic staff practices indicate that lecturers regularly employ digital tools for core teaching and organisational purposes, including presenting digitised materials (93.4%), informing students about assignments (87.4%), and communicating outside the lecture room (83.5%). However, the use of interactive tools (42.7%), AI-based tools (34.7%), and podcasts (27%) remains comparatively limited. From a multimodal perspective, the findings suggest that ESP learning in the selected universities already takes place within a complex multimodal environment. However, the pedagogical potential of digitalisation—particularly interactive and AI-supported tools—is not yet fully exploited by academic staff. At the same time, students demonstrate high digital readiness and strong interest in technology-enhanced learning, indicating favourable conditions for further development of multimodal ESP teaching practices. Nevertheless, interactive tools are not always explicitly recognised by students or transferred into autonomous learning, pointing to a need for greater pedagogical transparency and guidance. However, there remains limited empirical and conceptual clarity on how these two forms of assessment can be effectively balanced within ESL speaking tests and how this balance influences learners’ reflective autonomy and collaborative learning. This study explores the integration of peer-to-peer assessment and self-assessment in ESL speaking tests, focusing on their combined role in fostering reflective autonomy and collaborative learning among learners. The central research question guiding the study is: How does balancing peer-to-peer assessment and self-assessment in ESL speaking tests influence learners’ reflective autonomy and collaborative learning? To address this question, the study examines learners’ engagement with and perceptions of both assessment practices, as well as the learning processes that emerge when they are implemented together. The study is theoretically grounded in three complementary perspectives. Learner autonomy theory (Holec, 1981; Little, 1991) frames self-assessment as a reflective practice that enables learners to take responsibility for monitoring and regulating their speaking performance. Social constructivist theory (Vygotsky, 1978) conceptualizes peer-to-peer assessment as a socially mediated activity through which learners co-construct understanding, negotiate meaning, and support each other’s development. In addition, formative assessment theory (Black & Wiliam, 1998) positions both peer and self-assessment as assessment-for-learning strategies that actively involve learners in evaluating and improving their performance rather than merely measuring achievement. Drawing on these theoretical foundations, the study conceptualizes ESL speaking tests as learning-oriented assessment spaces in which reflection and collaboration are integral. By balancing self-assessment and peer-to-peer assessment, learners are encouraged to engage in individual reflection while also participating in dialogic feedback processes with peers. This dual focus is expected to enhance reflective autonomy and promote collaborative learning practices. The study aims to contribute to research on language assessment by clarifying the pedagogical value of combining peer and self-assessment in ESL speaking tests. It also offers practical implications for educators seeking to design speaking assessments that support learner autonomy, reflection, and collaboration within formative assessment frameworks. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study adopts a qualitative-dominant mixed-methods design to explore how balancing peer-to-peer assessment and self-assessment in ESL speaking tests influences learners’ reflective autonomy and collaborative learning. This approach allows for an in-depth examination of learners’ experiences and perceptions while also capturing patterns of engagement across assessment practices. The study is conducted in an upper secondary ESL educational context, involving learners who participate in structured speaking tests integrated with peer-to-peer and self-assessment components. Speaking tasks are designed to reflect authentic communicative activities, such as short presentations and dialogic interactions, and are accompanied by clear assessment criteria shared with learners in advance. Data collection involves multiple research instruments to ensure methodological triangulation. First, self-assessment checklists and reflective journals are used to capture learners’ reflections on their speaking performance, perceived strengths and weaknesses, and learning progress. These instruments are aligned with speaking assessment criteria and encourage metacognitive reflection. Second, peer-to-peer assessment forms are employed during speaking tests, allowing learners to provide structured feedback to their peers. The peer feedback focuses on communicative effectiveness, fluency, and interaction, supporting collaborative learning processes. In addition, semi-structured interviews or focus group discussions are conducted with selected participants to explore learners’ perceptions of peer and self-assessment practices, including perceived benefits, challenges, and their impact on autonomy and collaboration. To complement self-reported data, classroom observations are carried out during speaking assessments to examine interaction patterns, feedback exchanges, and learner engagement. Quantitative data from self- and peer-assessment ratings are analyzed descriptively to identify trends and consistency between assessment types. Qualitative data from reflections, interviews, and observations are analyzed thematically, guided by constructs from learner autonomy theory, social constructivism, and formative assessment theory. Ethical considerations include informed consent, anonymity, and voluntary participation. By combining multiple data sources and methods, the study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how peer-to-peer and self-assessment function together within ESL speaking tests as formative assessment practices. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This study is expected to demonstrate that a balanced integration of peer-to-peer assessment and self-assessment in ESL speaking tests can meaningfully support both reflective learner autonomy and collaborative learning. By actively involving learners in assessment processes, speaking tests are anticipated to shift from purely evaluative events to learning-oriented experiences. One expected outcome is that self-assessment practices will enhance learners’ reflective autonomy by encouraging them to critically evaluate their speaking performance, recognize strengths and weaknesses, and set personal learning goals. Learners are likely to develop greater awareness of assessment criteria and increased responsibility for their own learning, contributing to improved self-regulation in speaking tasks. In addition, peer-to-peer assessment is expected to foster collaborative learning by promoting interaction, dialogue, and shared reflection among learners. Through providing and receiving feedback, learners may become more engaged in co-constructing understanding of effective speaking performance, supporting mutual learning and the development of communicative competence. Peer feedback is also anticipated to reduce anxiety associated with speaking tests by creating a more supportive and participatory assessment environment. When combined, peer and self-assessment are expected to complement each other by balancing individual reflection with social interaction. This balance may lead to more consistent and meaningful feedback, as learners triangulate their own judgments with those of their peers. The study also anticipates identifying challenges related to reliability, learner confidence, and assessment literacy, highlighting the importance of clear criteria, scaffolding, and teacher guidance. Overall, the findings are expected to contribute to research on formative assessment and language education by offering insights into how assessment practices can be designed to support autonomy and collaboration in ESL speaking contexts.
