Paper Teachers Navigating the Existential and the Instrumental in ESE ESERGO, Örebro University, Sweden Presenting Author:In this empirical paper, we examine how teachers navigate the tension between the existential dimension of ESE and the instrumentalisation of education. We do so by analysing qualitative interviews with upper-secondary school teachers in Sweden, their written instructions to students, and students’ responses to those instructions. Drawing on this material, we explore the teachers’ didactic reflections on the existential dimension of environmental and sustainability problems and how they navigate this dimension in relation to the instrumentalism of the school system. The teaching content in ESE, such as climate change and biodiversity loss, addresses threats to human and non-human existence. For teachers, this means that teaching about climate change or biodiversity loss can raise profound questions for students about their own existence and that of the society they live in (Affifi & Christie, 2019; Vandenplas et al., 2023; Verlie, 2019). Thus, the content in ESE can have profound implications, which require teachers’ didactic reflection. Recently, Vandenplas (2025) pointed out that there is a need for more didactic research on how teachers create space for the existential in ESE, yet there are few empirical studies of teachers’ didactic practices, apart from her and her colleagues' work (see Vandenplas et al., 2023; Vandenplas, 2025). Our empirical study aims to contribute to the ongoing discussion initiated by Vandenplas and colleagues on how teachers can make room for the existential dimension in ESE. At the same time, environmental and sustainability issues are taught within an educational system characterised by instrumentalism. Many European education systems have shifted towards greater teacher accountability and a stronger emphasis on test results and measurable outcomes (Grek, 2020; Lingard, 2022). Thus, on the one hand, teachers must address content that can raise profound questions about the existence of life and societies as we know them. On the other hand, they teach within an education system that emphasises the efficient process between input and output, where grading standards, accountability, and transparency are central (Tryggvason et al., forthcoming). Given this, we deem it important to explore how teachers didactically reflect on the relationship between the existential and the instrumental in ESE and how they navigate the tension. In that sense, our paper aligns with Paul Vare’s (2020) argument that identifying contradictions within ESE enables us to address them, thereby making them “prerequisites of – rather than barriers to – learning” (Vare, 2020, p. 78). The paper addresses the following research question: What didactic approaches for navigating between the existential and the instrumental in ESE do teachers express when reflecting on their teaching? Our theoretical framework is twofold. First, to deepen our understanding of the existential dimension in ESE, we draw on the existential philosophy of Karl Jaspers (1971). Grounded in Jaspers’ work, we understand the existential dimension of the teaching content as a process in which the content becomes the students’ own existential question. Our understanding of the existential is also inspired by the work of Vandenplas et al. (2023), who have developed a typology of the existential tendency in climate change education. By drawing on previous theoretical work on the ethical tendency (Öhman & Östman, 2008) and the political tendency (Håkansson et al., 2018), Vandenplas et al. (2023) identify the existential as “an expression of a particular human tendency, which is observable in communication” (p. 1734). Second, to deepen our understanding of teachers’ didactic approaches, we draw on the Nordic/German Didaktik tradition, which highlights the concept of Bildung and teachers’ autonomy and judgment (Klafki, 2000; Uljens, 2023). The Didaktik tradition offers rich and attentive conceptualisations of teachers’ actions and reflections, enabling us to theorise how teachers navigate this tension through didactic approaches. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This empirical study builds on an analysis of qualitative interviews with eleven upper secondary school teachers in Sweden. The analysis of the interviews is the first part of our method. In the second part, we complemented our analysis of the interviews with an analysis of five of the teachers’ written instructions and students’ responses to these instructions. We recruited teachers who (i) teach about environmental and sustainability issues, (ii) are interested in sustainable development teaching. The interviews lasted 40-80 minutes and were transcribed verbatim. The project and data collection have been approved by the Swedish Research Ethics Authority. The analysis of the interviews followed the five phases of reflexive thematic analysis described by Braun and Clarke (2021). We first read the transcripts and made substantial notes (224 annotations). Thereafter, we coded the material in two rounds, increasing the initial 56 codes to 62. Following the conceptualisation of Braun and Clarke, the analysis is latent rather than semantic, meaning that the codes reflect condensed, interpreted meanings in the interviews, which are informed by our research question and theoretical framework (cf. Terry & Hayfield, 2021). In the third and fourth phases, we developed themes from the codes, reducing seven candidate themes to three final themes. In the fifth and final phase, we labelled the themes as didactic approaches for how teachers navigate between the existential and instrumental in ESE. To deepen understanding of the themes, we added a second part to our method by analysing teachers’ written instructions and students’ written responses to these instructions. In this way, we gained a richer understanding of how these teachers navigate between the existential and the instrumental, as they also refer to the instructions in the interviews. We considered analysing both the interviews and the texts together, but found it difficult to interpret the written material without the full context provided by the themes. The instructions varied widely, from a natural science task asking students to reflect on their relationship with nature, to a philosophy task asking them to consider climate change as an existential threat. The 78 student texts ranged in length from brief answers of half a page to ten-page reports. We examined the written material through the lens of the three themes, guided by the question: Does this text relate to any of the themes, and if so, how does it connect? Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Our result points to three didactic approaches for navigating between the existential dimension of ESE teaching content and the instrumentalism of schooling: (i) counteracting instrumentalism with Bildung, (ii) drawing on personal existential experiences, and (iii) encouraging authentic existential reflections. Counteracting instrumentalism with Bildung is an approach in which teachers repeatedly return to the content when confronted with instrumentalism. Surprisingly, a common thread among them is that they do not experience syllabi or curricula as instrumentalising their teaching. Instead, they encounter instrumentalism from the students themselves, who expect clear tasks that outline what they need to achieve to earn a grade. Teachers treat the teaching content as inherently important and valuable, framing education as a Bildung process rather than a means to achieve a grade. Drawing on personal existential experiences is an approach in which teachers use their own existential experiences to help students establish a new relationship with the content. Teachers' personal existential experiences of climate change also shape how they talk to their students about the climate crisis, even when it can be challenging to be the one to bring “the bad news” to younger generations. Encouraging authentic existential reflections is an approach in which teachers shape their teaching so that the tension between the existential and the instrumental dissolves. For example, by encouraging students to express their authentic existential reflections in essays and exams, their work serves a dual purpose: it satisfies grading requirements while also opening up the existential dimension. Our conclusion is that teachers can make room for the existential dimension within an instrumentalised education. However, doing so depends on their strong relationship with the teaching content. Thus, tensions between ESE and education systems (e.g. Stevenson, 2007) are not necessarily barriers to a vital ESE but, as Vare (2020) reminds us, can be prerequisites for learning. Paper Teachers' Didactic Approaches to Students’ Resistance in Environmental and Sustainability education ESERGO, Örebro University, Sweden Presenting Author:Young people are often assumed to have a particular responsibility to advocate for and mobilise towards a sustainable future (Molder et al., 2021). However, this assumption is contested. Research points not only to resistance to sustainability issues (e.g. Ojala, 2015; Urberg, 2025; Urberg & Öhman, 2025) but, more commonly, to limited interest and engagement (Anciaux et al., 2023). Teaching about the environment and sustainability can be challenging, especially when resistance, denial, polarisation, and lack of engagement in sustainability issues and climate change are not only found among young people and in isolated contexts, but also globally and among world leaders (Bolsen & Shapiro, 2018; Hejny, 2018). Previous research has long emphasised that sustainability issues are inherently conflict-ridden, rooted in social, political, and moral controversies that cannot be overlooked in educational settings. Such conflicts are not merely obstacles but constitutive elements of sustainability education, as they confront students with perspectives that may challenge their everyday practices and established ways of living (cf. Carlsson & Lysgaard, 2025; Lundegård et al., 2022; Mogensen & Schnack, 2010). Against this background, a didactic response in education is required to address and understand resistance and denial. In educational practice, teachers are often confronted with student responses ranging from scepticism and disengagement to explicit resistance. This study examines teachers’ experiences of students’ resistance in environmental and sustainability education (ESE) and how they have handled it in their teaching practice. The overarching research question guiding the study is: What are teachers’ didactic approaches to students’ resistance in ESE? We address this question by analysing qualitative interviews with nine secondary-school teachers about their experiences of students’ resistance to ESE and their didactic reflections on how they have handled it. By focusing on teachers’ perspectives, the study seeks to contribute to knowledge about how resistance is understood, interpreted, and pedagogically addressed in classroom practice. The study draws on the Nordic/German didactic tradition, which emphasises understanding teachers’ actions in relation to both learners and the specific curricular content (Hopmann, 2007; Klafki, 2000; Öhman, 2014). Within this tradition, teaching is understood as a reflective and situated practice in which teachers continuously exercise professional judgement in response to concrete educational situations. This perspective enables an analysis of teaching that takes both the subject matter and students’ experiences, values, and preconditions. In addition, the study is informed by John Dewey’s notion of experience. Following Dewey (1916/1985), experiences are understood as situations that concern individuals and carry suspense, meaning they involve uncertainty, tension, or disruption. The experiences that teachers raise and reflect on during the interviews are therefore regarded as meaningful encounters that shape their professional understanding. By reflecting on their actions, teachers articulate their professional judgement, which lays the groundwork for their future experiences and actions (cf. Dewey, 1938a). In this study, didactic approaches are understood as overarching dispositions for action. An approach is not a single pedagogical act but rather the direction of a collection of actions that guides how teachers respond to resistance over time and across situations. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The empirical material for this study consists of interviews with nine practising teachers in secondary education in Sweden. The interviews focused on teachers’ experiences of resistance in environmental and sustainability education and on how they reflected on their own actions in response to such situations. By reflecting on their actions, teachers articulate their professional judgement, (cf. Dewey, 1938). The interview situation thus becomes a space where teachers articulate and examine their professional judgement. Through this reflective process, teachers make visible how their previous experiences inform their current and future pedagogical actions (cf. Dewey, 1938a). The analysis followed a structured yet iterative coding process that combined deductively informed categories from didactic theory with inductively generated codes grounded in the data, recognising that themes in reliability-oriented qualitative analysis often emerge early in the analytical process (cf. Byrne, 2022; Braun & Clarke, 2013). This approach enabled a systematic examination of the interview material while remaining sensitive to nuances in teachers’ descriptions. The analysis combined deductively informed categories derived from didactic theory with inductively generated codes grounded in the empirical data. In this way, the analysis was guided by the theoretical framework while remaining open to unexpected patterns and meanings emerging from the teachers’ accounts. The concept of didactic approaches played a central role in the analysis. Drawing on the Nordic/German Didaktik tradition and Dewey’s notion of experience the analysis focused on identifying recurring orientations in teachers’ ways of understanding and responding to student resistance. Rather than categorising isolated teaching strategies, the analysis aimed to capture broader dispositions for action that shape how teachers navigate controversial and conflict-laden sustainability issues in the classroom. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The results highlight that teachers’ approaches to handling resistance are not merely the implementation of policy or guidelines but instead reflect sensitivity to the unique students and the context in which they are embedded. The analysis identified three didactic approaches that characterise teachers’ responses to student resistance in environmental and sustainability education. What characterises the first approach, the relationally oriented approach, is the presence of relational negotiation in situations of resistance. Teachers address resistance in a non-judgmental manner through dialogue rather than positioning themselves as epistemically or morally “above” the student. Within this approach, resistance is understood as both desirable and potentially constructive, as it may signal engagement and create opportunities for meaningful dialogue. The second is a value-oriented approach that emphasises the importance of didactic sensitivity in pluralistic discussions of sustainability issues. These discussions often stem from a politicised and polarised public debate and may touch on students’ private lives and material conditions. Teachers adopting this approach carefully consider when and how to challenge students, considering situational factors and students’ preconditions. The third is a knowledge-oriented approach in which teachers avoid presenting scientific knowledge as an authoritative truth to be transmitted. Instead, knowledge is emphasised as something shared and collectively owned, enabling students to engage through critical examination. The findings suggest that controversy, conflict, and resistance should not be viewed solely as obstacles to be overcome but as essential components of vital ESE. Without resistance and disruption, the value dimension of sustainable development risks being overlooked, reducing ESE to mere information transmission (cf. Stevenson, 2007; Tryggvason et al., 2022). The study demonstrates that teachers’ didactic approaches to student resistance involve a careful balancing of relational sensitivity, value pluralism, and collective knowledge-building, enabling educational engagement with sustainability issues that is both critical and respectful of students’ perspectives. Paper The Role of Growth Mindset in Education for Sustainability: Exploring Mindsets of Transformative Teachers Tampere University, Finland Presenting Author:In addressing the eco-crisis, climate change, and mounting social inequalities, transforming cultural structures supporting unsustainable lifestyles is crucial (Kashima 2020; Värri 2019). Researchers and policy-makers alike perceive teachers as key agents of cultural transformation for sustainability (Amsler & Facer 2017; Evans et al. 2017; UNESCO 2018, 2022); yet the purposes teachers see in work and the possibilities they perceive within the teaching profession are sometimes in stark contrast to the ideal of teachers as transformative agents (Kuusisto & Rissanen 2023). While aware of the relevance of global change for education, teachers may be hesitant to assume the role of change maker (Cochran-Smith et al. 2009; Timm et al. 2023). A better understanding of teachers’ learning processes through which the agency for change may occur, including the key factors helping or hindering these processes, is needed. Furthermore, the magnitude of current ecological and social problems may cause feeling of helplessness, leading to demotivation and demoralization among those becoming aware of them (Salomon et al. 2017). However, core beliefs and perceptions that help to overcome apathy and motivate for collective action have been identified in psychological and social psychological research. In particular, belief in the malleability of human qualities and qualities of groups, i.e. growth mindsets, have been shown to significantly influence willingness to act for change (Goldenberg et al. 2017; Halperin 2011). The core of growth mindset theory lies in incremental beliefs, which form broader meaning systems encompassing goal orientations, attribution styles, beliefs about effort and challenge seeking (Dweck & Yeager 2019). Earlier research demonstrates a link between teachers growth mindsets and orientation to social justice, but more research is needed to understand how mindsets shape teachers’ transformative agency for sustainability. In this study, we explore Finnish transformative teachers’ mindsets with the following research question: What elements of growth and fixed mindset meaning systems emerge in transformative teachers’ narratives of professional development? Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This paper introduces an on-going mixed methods research project that explores core features of teachers’ mindsets for transformation, and how these can be influenced in pre- and in-service teacher education. We present results based on an initial narrative phase of the project, in which Finnish teachers (n=14), identified to hold a particularly strong change agency and engage in transformative practices, were interviewed. The narrative in-depth interviews focused on the development of teachers’ professional purposes and agency to foster social, cultural and ecological sustainability through their work. The interviews are analysed with abductive qualitative content analysis, in which the aspect of mindset meaning systems (incremental vs. entity beliefs, learning/performance/avoidance goals, process vs. trait focus, effort beliefs and challenges seeking) serve as deductive main categories and sub-categories are formed inductively. The preliminary analysis finds several elements of growth mindset meaning systems to emerge strong among the teachers. The teachers hold incremental beliefs concerning the ability of individuals to change their values, beliefs and ways of thinking; their incremental way of thinking also covers beliefs in cultural and societal change as well as change in schools and education systems. Furthermore, these change agent teachers have a strong tendency towards process focused instead of trait focused thinking: they rarely attribute failures and setbacks to their personal qualities or those of their colleagues or students, but are interested in analysing psychological, physiological, social, contextual and situational processes that influence processes of change. However, an interesting observation is that in teachers with a more tendency to trait-focused thinking also struggled most with symptoms of stress and burnout. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings We will discuss the implications of our findings for developing transformative (teacher) education for sustainability. Mindsets can be influenced: even brief interventions focused on core beliefs that constitute growth mindset meaningsystems, if carefully adapted to their target populations, may achieve a powerful and long-lasting impact on willingness to work towards both personal change and change in the world (Halperin 2011; Goldenberg et al. 2017; Mortensen et al. 2017; Rattan & Georgeac 2017; Yeager & Walton 2011). On the other hand, without change in mindsets, attempts at systemic education change might be doomed to failure. Mindset is a “lay theory”, which shapes people’s ways of making sense of socio-cultural reality and influences their thinking about and acting towards change (Dweck & Yeager 2019). People have a strong psychological desire not to be left “theoryless”: the human brain is geared to resist information and experiences incompatible with current core beliefs unless a valid new theory can be formed (Plaks et al. 2005; 2009). Thus, we suggest that in developing transformative teacher education for sustainability, it is vital to learn from successful mindset interventions and influence implicit beliefs concerning the ability of humans, groups and cultures to change.
