Research Workshop Knowing and Acting in Times of Poly-Crisis: Transdisciplinary Qualitative Research Methods for ESE 1: Hochschule Zittau Görlitz, Germany; 2: Pädagogische Hochschule Ludwigsburg, Germany Presenting Author:This contribution addresses the role and function of Environmental and Sustainability Education (ESE) research in times of poly-crisis. Characterised by the entanglement of ecological, social, economic and political crises, producing high levels of uncertainty, contestation and complexity (Lawrence et al., 2024), such conditions challenge conventional assumptions about the aims, knowledge forms, methodologies and practices of ESE research. In response, we argue for transdisciplinary qualitative research approaches that explicitly connect knowing and acting, and that position educators and other non-academic actors as co-researchers in processes of knowledge production and social transformation. Transdisciplinary research deliberately crosses disciplinary boundaries to address complex, real-world problems and has become well established in sustainability science (Lang et al., 2012). A defining feature of transdisciplinary research is the involvement of actors beyond academia, integrating multiple forms of expertise and fostering shared ownership of processes and outcomes. Mobjörk (2010) distinguishes between consulting transdisciplinary research, where non-academic actors respond to academically defined research agendas, and participatory transdisciplinary research, where engagement includes framing problems, generating knowledge and interpreting results. Here we focus on participatory approaches, as a form of “transformation in action” (Palavicino et al., 2023). The contested aims of transdisciplinary research reflect epistemological tensions. For instance, Renn (2019) sees researchers as “honest brokers” who synthesise and communicate knowledge from multiple sources to support decision-making, while for others, singular, coherent understandings reproduce dominant paradigms that have contributed to unsustainability, and research should instead open up spaces for plural ways of knowing, being and doing (West et al., 2024). The iterative relationship between knowing and acting, and recognition of distinct context-based knowledges, is an established feature of professionalisation in education. Educational professionals draw on knowledge in theory and in policy, as well as contextual understandings and relational knowledge to act in complex and uncertain situations (Schön, 1983). Research traditions such as action research have long built on this insight through researcher–practitioner partnerships. For ESE in particular, critical participatory approaches are highly relevant, as they examine how local meanings, identities and practices are shaped by, and reproduce/transform, systemic socio-ecological power relations (Carr & Kemmis, 1986). Drawing on socio-cultural and activity-theoretical perspectives (Engeström, 1987), such approaches can empower educators by rendering “knowledge in practice” available for transformation. Despite this potential, ESE research has often prioritised the development and evaluation of normative competence frameworks intended to “operationalise” global policy visions such as the SDGs (e.g., UNESCO, 2017). This linear knowing–acting logic positions academics as knowledge producers and educators as implementers, reproducing “business as usual” (Wals & Benavot, 2017) and neglecting research-based understandings of professional autonomy (Hamborg, 2023). In contrast, we argue that participatory, transdisciplinary qualitative research offers more adequate responses to poly-crisis by embracing complexity, reflexivity and relationality. In this research workshop, we present and critically discuss three transdisciplinary qualitative methods, which we have used to research social phenomena in societal transformation processes: situational analysis, social network analysis, and generative target group development. For each approach, we present the methodological framework, and establish its transdisciplinary suitability and its relevance to ESE. Together with participants, we explore the roles of academic and non-academic actors, tensions between knowledge-oriented and process-oriented research aims (Bulten et al., 2021), and the implications of centring relationships, contexts and more-than-human collectives (Gould et al., 2023). Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Situational Analysis is a qualitative research approach developed by Adele Clarke as an extension of Grounded Theory, aiming to move it more fully into the interpretive turn and to address limitations such as generic abstraction, insufficient reflexivity, and lingering positivist assumptions (Clarke 2019). The approach conceptualizes the situation of inquiry as the central unit of analysis, encompassing human and non-human actors, discourses, material arrangements, institutions, and power relations that mutually condition possibilities for interpretation and action (Clarke 2019: 210). Drawing on pragmatist- and interactionist traditions, Situational Analysis integrates perspectives from the sociology of knowledge, discourse analysis, and feminist science and technology studies and, is an especially relational and ecological approach, including insights from actor-network theory. Rooted in feminist, anti-racist, and anti-colonial commitments (Clarke 2019), the approach is particularly suited to producing situated knowledge (Haraway 1988) in politically contested and socially transformative contexts. Social Network Analysis (SNA), adopts a relational perspective to examine social structures through relationships between actors. While SNA has been criticised for being overly deterministic and insufficiently attentive to individual agency and meaning-making (Bernhard & Herz, 2025), qualitative Social Network Analysis (QSNA) combines relational analysis with a meaning-centred perspective, incorporating participants’ subjective experiences and interpretations of relationships alongside classic SNA concepts such as gaps, bridges, brokers and cliques (Bernhard & Herz, 2025). Networks may be explored from an ego-centred perspective, focusing on the relations of a single actor, or as whole networks incorporating multiple perspectives. While ego-centred approaches dominate the literature (Bernhard & Herz, 2025), whole-network approaches are particularly valuable for participatory ESE research, as they support the development of shared understanding and make implicit relational knowledge visible (Schiffer & Hauk, 2010). Generative target group development recognises that the relationship between the ‘provider’ of the educational service and the users of the educational service is central to adult education, which can only succeed if both sides work together. This relational approach is often neglected, and functional forms of didactic organisation dominate, predominantly based on overarching descriptions of learning objectives. The dominance of functional approaches to ESD exhausts itself in descriptions of what should ideally be in the educational process, without taking sufficient account of pedagogical organisation as a complex, multi-layered social relationship structure (Förster 2012). The presentation will introduce five transformation models (Schäffter, 1998) and provide concrete guidance for reflecting on generative target group development. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Times of poly-crisis demand a critical rethinking of the role and function of ESE research. Education is a situated social practice embedded in specific socio-ecological contexts that are interwoven with broader systemic structures in complex and often contradictory ways. Under such conditions, ESE research cannot be limited to producing abstract knowledge or prescriptive frameworks. Instead, it can contribute by supporting educators’ reflexive capacities to navigate uncertainty through iterative processes of knowing and acting. Participatory, transdisciplinary qualitative research offers promising pathways for such engagement. By foregrounding relationships, meanings and situated practices, these approaches enable educators and other actors to articulate implicit knowledge, question dominant assumptions, and explore alternative ways of acting towards sustainability. Importantly, this shifts ESE research away from linear models in which knowledge is produced by academics and subsequently implemented by practitioners or policy actors. In line with calls for more plural, relational and action-oriented sustainability research (West et al., 2019), we argue that knowledge in ESE should be understood not as something applied to practice, but as something “drawn upon, produced and used from within the situation at hand”. Such an understanding aligns more closely with professional practice in education and with the demands of poly-crisis, where predefined solutions are rarely adequate. By engaging participants in methodological reflection and practical activities, this workshop aims to contribute to ongoing debates within NW30 about the kinds of research, knowledge and practices that are needed for ESE in the present moment—and about what contributions education can realistically make to societal transformation within and beyond institutional boundaries.
