Paper A Systematic Review of Instructional Designs Supporting Argumentation and Social-emotional Skills in K–12 Classrooms University of Auckland, New Zealand Presenting Author:This proposal reports a PRISMA systematic review examining how instructional designs in K–12 classrooms support students’ argumentation alongside social-emotional (SE) skills. Across educational psychology and learning sciences, argumentation is widely recognised as a powerful context for developing higher-order reasoning and academic language. At the same time, productive classroom argumentation relies on social-emotional capacities such as perspective-taking, empathy, sociability, and self-regulation, especially when learners engage with disagreement, uncertainty, and competing viewpoints. However, research has often treated argumentation and SE development as separate strands, leaving limited synthesis on how classroom designs integrate these dual aims and what evidence exists for SE outcomes. Research Questions and Objectives This review addresses two research questions: The objectives are threefold: Conceptual and Theoretical Framework The review is framed by two complementary theoretical lenses. First, a dialogic and socio-cultural view of learning treats argumentation as collaborative reasoning in which knowledge is constructed through interaction and responsiveness to others’ ideas. From this perspective, dialogic exchanges are not only vehicles for reasoning but also sites for developing dispositions and practices such as listening, respectfully challenging claims, and coordinating perspectives. Second, we conceptualise SE skills as both prerequisites for and potential outcomes of participation in argumentation-rich activities. We distinguish interindividual skills (empathy, perspective-taking, sociability) that support engagement with others’ positions, and intraindividual skills (self-regulation) that support sustained attention, emotional control, and reflective reasoning during complex tasks. Building on these lenses and inductive coding of included studies, we propose a synthesis framework capturing three recurring instructional design features: European / International Dimension An international perspective is central to this review because argumentation and SE development are strongly shaped by cultural norms, language practices, and classroom participation expectations. The reviewed studies span multiple national contexts and include varied student populations (e.g., linguistically diverse learners, culturally plural classrooms), offering insights into how instructional designs travel across settings and how they are adapted. The synthesis highlights the role of digital tools and platforms—now increasingly common across European and global classrooms—in structuring participation, supporting asynchronous dialogue, and broadening student voice. By mapping evidence across countries and design traditions, the review aims to inform internationally relevant principles for designing argumentation-rich classrooms that also promote SE competencies, while identifying where stronger cross-cultural and longitudinal evidence is needed. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study is a systematic review synthesising empirical research on instructional designs that support K–12 students’ argumentation alongside social-emotional (SE) skills. The review followed a preregistered protocol informed by the PRISMA 2020 guidelines to ensure transparency and methodological rigour. Information sources and search strategy A comprehensive literature search was conducted in three major databases—Scopus, Web of Science, and ERIC—to identify relevant peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2013 and 2025. Searches were limited to publications in English or Chinese. Boolean search strings combined three groups of terms: (a) argumentation-related constructs (e.g., argumentation, argument, collaborative reasoning), (b) SE constructs (e.g., empathy, perspective-taking, sociability, self-regulation), and (c) student population terms (e.g., child, children, K–12, primary, secondary). Terms were searched in titles, abstracts, and keywords. Records were exported to reference management software for de-duplication and screening. Eligibility criteria and selection process Studies were included if they (1) reported empirical primary data (experimental, quasi-experimental interventions, or classroom programmes), (2) involved K–12 students in school-based instructional contexts, and (3) examined argumentation and at least one SE-related construct. Studies without primary data (e.g., conceptual papers, reviews) or conducted outside instructional settings were excluded. The initial search yielded 520 records; after removing duplicates, 400 unique records were screened at title–abstract level. Full texts of 65 potentially relevant articles were assessed, resulting in 20 studies retained for synthesis. Data extraction and coding framework Key data items were extracted into a structured spreadsheet, including study characteristics (year, country, age group), SE skills addressed, instructional design features, use of digital tools, and reported outcomes. Analysis used an integrated coding framework adapted from established argumentation and dialogic learning literature. Coding focused on three dimensions aligned with the research questions: (a) SE skills (empathy, perspective-taking, sociability, self-regulation), (b) argumentation quality (five overarching constructs: argumentation profile; reasoning depth and integration; justification and evidence use; linguistic and writing quality; SE integration), and (c) instructional design components (Community of Practice, explicit instruction, structured dialogic processes). To strengthen reliability, a second coder independently coded a subset of studies; discrepancies were discussed and resolved, and inter-coder agreement for major categories was substantial. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The review synthesised 20 empirical studies (2013–2025) across diverse national contexts, with most research concentrated in upper primary and lower secondary settings. Overall, findings suggest that social-emotional (SE) processes are frequently embedded within argumentation-oriented instruction, yet are far less often assessed as explicit learning outcomes. Perspective-taking was the most commonly foregrounded SE skill, followed by sociability and empathy, whereas self-regulation was rarely targeted or measured. This imbalance indicates that argumentation research has primarily prioritised interpersonal engagement and responsiveness, while under-examining intraindividual regulation demands that are theoretically central to complex reasoning and sustained dialogue. Across studies, improvements in argumentation quality were most consistently reported for justification and evidence use, reflecting strong alignment between instructional scaffolds and measurable argumentative components. More mixed evidence was found for higher-level reasoning outcomes (e.g., integration, depth) and for dialogic gains that require students to engage critically with alternative positions. Only a small number of studies explicitly measured both argumentation outcomes and SE-related outcomes, meaning evidence for the relationship between SE skills and argumentation remains tentative and largely correlational. Three instructional design families emerged—dialogic/argumentation-centred instruction, project-based/inquiry learning, and socially/culturally responsive instruction—each sharing core features of community building, explicit support for skills, and structured dialogic processes. Digital tools were common and appeared to support participation and structuring of reasoning, particularly through collaborative platforms and specialised argumentation software. Expected contributions include (a) a design-oriented synthesis framework linking instructional features with SE and argumentation outcomes, and (b) implications for future European/international research, highlighting the need for more explicit SE measurement, culturally responsive design adaptations, and rigorous studies examining bidirectional effects between argumentation practices and SE development. Paper Thinking Critically about Critical Thinking: A Differentiation Proposal 1: Centre for Research and Intervention in Education (CIIE) / FPCEUP, Portugal; 2: Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto (FLUP), Portugal Presenting Author:The concept of critical thinking, widely presented and discussed by the scientific community, tends to be polysemic; as a result, its definition may vary. In the context of a broader study, which sought to assess how certain curricular and didactic provisions and dynamics promote or condition academic success in two subjects from different areas and originating from different knowledge structures - biology and history - it was found that, although teachers of both subjects placed the promotion of critical thinking as a central element of their work, the conception and implementation of this critical thinking varied according to the subject. With this in mind, and considering that teachers placed the promotion of critical thinking at the centre of their teaching and pedagogical work, we sought to understand: 1. What are the perspectives and respective dynamics of teachers from different subjects in relation to critical thinking? 2. What are the students' perspectives on the contribution of the specific subject to the development of their critical thinking? 3. How can these different perspectives (and respective approaches) contribute to a reinterpretation of the concept of critical thinking? The polysemic nature of the concept of critical thinking, on the one hand, opens the way to a wide range of theoretical and conceptual approaches to the subject, but, on the other hand, it also risks emptying these approaches of meaning. Furthermore, while some authors, such as Burbles and Berk, place greater value on epistemic adequacy, others, such as Lim, also consider the social and relational dimensions of thinking to be central. What these authors have in common is their focus on knowledge, the object of this thinking. In other words, critical thinking is not a skill that is learned in a vacuum, but something that is intrinsically related to knowledge. In this context, the insights of Duarte, Fernandes, and Correia emerge. The authors, in their proposal on the dialectic of powerful thinking, distinguish between restricted and elaborated critical thinking. Their model focuses on the individual dimension of the act of thinking as well as the social (and sociocultural) dimension that constrains that same thinking (from the thinkable to the unthinkable). The authors' analysis of thinking, although based on assumptions related to psychology and neuroscience, has at its core an eminently social and relational perspective on how thinking structures are established and developed. In this sense, the concept of powerful thinking reflects the dialogical and intersubjective dynamics that influence our relationships with ourselves, others, and the world. Duarte, Fernandes, and Correia's proposal consists of a dialectical model comprising different levels of reasoning structures, encompassing intellectual predispositions and integrated symbolic representations, which function according to an unbreakable logic of dialogue between reason and affections. They establish a preconventional level of thinking, which has an intrapersonal centring and can be directly related to what they define as restricted critical thinking; then, this critical thinking can become more elaborated when more abstract and decentralised thinking structures come into play - the conventional, with an interpersonal centring, and the postconventional, with an impersonal centring. The ultimate goal of this proposal is, therefore, to present and discuss a model of differentiation of critical thinking that contains restricted and elaborated forms, and to frame the different perspectives previously presented in this model. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This proposal arose within the scope of a broader research project that consisted of a case study, or rather, a multiple-case study, conducted in Portugal. One of its primary objectives was to assess representations of academic success among students and teachers in the contexts studied, and to discern how curricular provisions and teaching practices can influence this success. The study was conducted in different environments: on the one hand, in three schools with different geographical locations and socio-economic/socio-cultural contexts; on the other hand, in two school subjects, from upper secondary education, originating from different knowledge structures - history from a horizontal knowledge structure and biology from a hierarchical knowledge structure. Thus, another aim was to assess how these structural differences among subjects could influence the dynamics and processes underlying academic success. A mainly qualitative and interpretative approach was used to collect and analyse the empirical material. Within the framework of the broader project, data was collected through: focus group interviews (with teachers and with students from each school), individual interviews with teachers, collection of individual written narratives from a group of students supplemented by individual follow-up interviews, observation of lessons relating to a block of curriculum content, and collection of curricula documents and teaching and assessment materials used in classes for a period of two academic years. From an initial, exploratory, inductive content analysis, it was possible to infer that, for teachers of both subjects, the promotion of critical thinking was one of the primary objectives of their teaching work and one of the main purposes of their subject. However, it was also possible to conclude that what they understood by critical thinking and how the subject promoted it varied considerably. It was from this conclusion that this specific proposal arose. This specific part of the study was primarily based on the analysis of focus group interviews. From there, a deductive content analysis of the data on critical thinking was conducted, based on the categories defined by Duarte, Fernandes, and Correia: restricted critical thinking and elaborated critical thinking. Then, at the end of this process, to refine the analysis, we returned to an inductive approach to identify potential differentiated categories within each established dimension. Finally, to add meaning to the results, the data from the focus group discussions were triangulated with field notes from the class observations. These data were consistent, and this triangulation solidified the initial perceptions. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The main findings of this study can be summarised as follows, in line with the guiding questions: 1. Although the development of critical thinking is, according to the groups of teachers interviewed, one of the main purposes (if not the main purpose) of both subjects, the representations and modes of implementation of the concept vary. In history, teachers perceive critical thinking more in a sociocultural (and civic) dimension and work it through horizontal dialogues and informal debates on historical themes that affect the present; in biology, teachers perceive critical thinking more in a disciplinary (and scientific) dimension and work it through problem solving and laboratory tasks, with critical reading of data as a key factor, in an environment that prioritises epistemic adequacy. 2. History students are more aware of the subject’s contribution to critical thinking, largely because of the general culture it offers them, which allows them to take a more sceptical view of the reality they encounter; biology students do not associate the subject with the development of critical thinking, except for those who hope to pursue a career more related to the field of study (tensions between everyday knowledge and school knowledge?). 3. What links the different perspectives of critical thinking is their connection with a certain scepticism towards what is presented. However, it is possible to differentiate between the different perspectives and approaches within the framework of powerful thinking. To refine the proposed differentiation and to design potential subcategories within the framework of the two main categories, two preliminary proposals were outlined: critical thinking, restricted or elaborated, where boundaries are maintained; and critical thinking, restricted or elaborated, where boundaries are crossed.
