Paper Students’ Voiced Experiences of Pedagogical Models And/or Models-based Practice: A Systematic Mix-study Review 1: Inland Norway University, Norway; 2: Loughborough University, UK Presenting Author:A prominent argument in physical education research advocates moving away from teacher-led instruction that emphasizes only the physical domain (Casey & Kirk, 2021; Kirk, 2013). Models-based Practice (MbP) represents a student-centred alternative to teaching physical education, challenging the traditional teacher-led, multi-activity approach that has long dominated the field (Kirk, 2013). MbP has gained increasing popularity and support, and several scholars have discussed it as a potential future for PE pedagogies. That said, there are also concerns and critical voices regarding MbP, suggesting that we do not yet know enough about pedagogical models and MbP to position them as the definitive future of PE (Landi, Fitzpatrick, & McGlashan, 2016). A substantial body of research has been published exploring students’ experiences of learning through various pedagogical models and/or MbP over the last decades. Individually, these studies offer insight into the educational possibilities as well as challenges students experience through these approaches as reported by themselves. Despite the depth of research, no study has previously synthesised the individual studies that constitute this body of work. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to scrutinise the existing literature examining students’ experiences of pedagogical models and/or MbP. In doing so, we aim at providing a more holistic yet nuanced understanding of both the possibilities and the challenges of MbP, as heard through the voices of students themselves. In this systematic mixed studies review, we address the following research question: How do students voice their experiences of being taught through pedagogical models and/or MbP in physical education? Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used We conducted a systematic mixed studies review to identify, assess, and synthesise qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research investigating students’ experiences of learning through pedagogicical models and/or MbP. A rigorous search protocol was collectively developed before the searches were conducted. A librarian at First Author’s library, with particular expertise in data base searches, was consulted during the development of the search protocol. Before the searches were conducted on February 11th 2025, the librarian conducted a peer review of the search protocol. She was also assisting First Author as he was conducting the actual searches. Initially, 3,229 studies were identified through ERIC, SPORTDiscus, Web of Science, and Scopus. Following abstract and full-text screening using the Covidence software, 243 studies were assessed for eligibility, of which 131 were included in the final analysis. In conducting a quality assessment, we usede the mixed-methods appraisal tool (MMAT) (Hong et al., 2018). The MMAT includes two screening questions for all papers, and five tailored questions depending on whether the papers are qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings A descriptive analysis of the papers revealed that the most extensively researched pedagogical models were sport education (54), cooperative learning (18) and games-based approaches (16). We found 16 papers reporting on students’ experiences from multiple models, 12 of which used hybridisations. The research spanned primary (40), secondary (86), and both primary and secondary (5) education levels in 22 different countries, with the US (31), the UK (23), and Spain (20) being the most frequent contexts. The combined research involved 7710 students, 209 teachers and 104 others (52 teachers-as-researchers/boundary-spanners/facilitators and 52 parents). While this knowledge provides valuable contextual insights, further analysis is required to deepen our understanding of students’ experiences. Therefore, prior to the conference, the included papers will be analysed using an inductive convergent synthesis strategy. This process will enable us to develop themes that capture students’ subjective experiences of learning through pedagogical models and/or Models-Based Practice (MbP). References Casey, A., & D. Accordingly, the secondary school years are widely regarded as the investment phase of an athletic career (Stambulova et al., 2009). However, sporting excellence is shaped by numerous uncertain internal and external factors, rendering a career path based exclusively on athletic success inherently risky. Despite this uncertainty, many secondary school athletes construct their future primarily around their athletic identity, even though only a small proportion ultimately reach the adult elite level (Gulbin et al., 2010). In handball, this disparity is particularly pronounced, as only a few percent of secondary school athletes obtain professional or semi-professional contracts. To address these challenges, the concept of the dual career was introduced to describe the need to balance elite sport participation with educational development (Stambulova & Wylleman, 2014). The student-athlete dual career framework emphasizes the integration of sporting and academic pathways, enabling athletes to achieve high performance in sport while preparing for life beyond competition. A critical stage in this process is the transition from secondary education to higher education, highlighting the strategic importance of dual career support during secondary school years (Ryba et al., 2016; Rens et al., 2018; Graczyk et al., 2018). Research indicates that young athletes often prioritize sport over other life domains, placing increased responsibility on sport clubs, schools, and support providers to facilitate all-around development (Knapp, 2012). When effectively implemented, dual career pathways promote identity development, intellectual growth, life balance, and long-term career preparedness beyond sport (Stambulova & Wylleman, 2019). Despite this, empirical research has predominantly focused on university-aged athletes, leaving the secondary school context underexplored. Therefore, the present study examined the perceptions of secondary school handball players and their coaches regarding sport-extrinsic development, with particular emphasis on lived experiences and perceived responsibility within the dual career framework. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The population consisted of secondary school student-athletes and their coaches in Hungary. The sample comprised 507 registered secondary school handball players (mean age: M = 16.36 ± 2.19 years) and 279 coaches (mean age: M = 44.60 ± 12.74 years). Among the student-athletes, 42.8% were male and 57.2% were female; 57.7% were under the age of 16, while 42.3% were 16 years or older. Among the coaches, 57.35% were male and 42.65% were female; 46.2% were under the age of 44, whereas 53.8% were aged 44 years or older. Data were collected using an online questionnaire based on the Erasmus+ DC4AC framework. The instrument assessed general background variables, personal experiences, and perceived responsibility related to sport-extrinsic development. It consisted of 18 items rated on a four-point Likert scale (1 = strongly disagree, 4 = strongly agree), covering the following domains: personal, physical, psychological/emotional, social/interpersonal, academic/cognitive, sport professional, moral, and communication skills development. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, independent-samples t-tests to examine differences between student-athletes and coaches, and multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) to assess the overall effects of background variables. The study was conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki (2003). Written informed consent was obtained from all participants; for student-athletes, consent was also obtained from their parents or legal guardians before participation. Ethical approval was granted by the Institutional Review Board of Eszterházy Károly Catholic University (Approval ID: RK/1585/2025). Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Across the total sample, clubs primarily support motor (3.47 ± 0.68) and sport-specific professional development (3.27 ± 0.77), whereas psychological development received the least emphasis (2.67 ± 0.94). Perceived club responsibility was highest in motor (3.64 ± 0.57) and sport professional development (3.41 ± 0.76). Student-athletes reported significantly stronger experiences of personal development and expressed lower concern about their future compared to coaches’ perceptions (p < 0.05). The combined effects of sample characteristics, age, and gender were weak overall (p > 0.05). Athletes were more likely to believe that they were prepared for life after sport and capable of managing their lives effectively, whereas coaches assessed athletes’ future preparedness more critically (p < 0.05). In contrast, coaches placed greater emphasis on psychological, academic, and moral development (p < 0.05) and consistently attributed significantly greater responsibility to clubs across multiple developmental domains (p < 0.05). Female coaches and female athletes emphasized broader club responsibility, particularly in psychological, social, academic, and communication-related development (p < 0.05). Younger athletes (<16 years) reported stronger developmental experiences overall, while older athletes perceived greater club responsibility in psychological domains (p < 0.05). The findings indicate that the development of 14-18-year-old handball players remains predominantly sport performance-oriented, with motor and sport-specific domains receiving the greatest emphasis, while psychological and academic development are comparatively neglected. Differences between student-athletes’ and coaches’ perceptions suggest a mismatch in developmental awareness, as athletes tend to feel prepared for life after sport, whereas coaches adopt a more critical, long-term perspective. Gender- and age-related patterns further highlight the need for differentiated support, particularly in psychosocial domains. Overall, the results underscore the importance of integrated, age- and gender-sensitive dual career strategies that extend beyond athletic performance and systematically support athletes’ holistic development within secondary school sport. Paper From Teacher Education to School Practice: Stakeholder Perspectives on Lower Primary Physical Education in Hungary 1: Eszterházy Károly Catholic University, University of Pannonia, Hungary; 2: University of Pannonia Presenting Author:Physical education in lower primary education occupies a strategically important yet often underestimated position in children’s development. In Hungary, although both generalist primary teachers and specialist physical education teachers are formally entitled to teach physical education in the lower grades, the subject is most commonly delivered by generalist primary teachers in everyday practice. This places primary teacher education in a pivotal role, as it directly shapes how future teachers conceptualize, value, and implement physical education in schools. While Hungarian primary teacher education provides a relatively strong curricular presence for physical education compared to several international systems (Repond et al., 2023), the mere availability of coursework does not guarantee pedagogically effective or developmentally balanced implementation in school practice. Teachers’ beliefs and instructional practices related to physical education are not formed in isolation but emerge through a long and complex socialization process. This process begins with early childhood movement experiences, is further shaped by teachers’ own school trajectories, and continues throughout teacher education and professional practice (Ferry & Romar, 2020). As a result, physical education in lower primary grades is influenced not only by formal curricula but also by deeply rooted personal experiences, institutional norms, and implicit expectations. Teacher education occupies a unique position in this process, as it is simultaneously embedded in the systems of public education and higher education. Consequently, it is shaped by the often divergent expectations, priorities, and constraints of both spheres (Chrappán, 2020). The aims and content of school physical education are regulated by the National Core Curriculum, while primary teacher education is governed by nationally defined Training and Output Requirements. However, these regulatory frameworks do not operate mechanically. Their practical realization is mediated through teachers’ interpretations, institutional cultures, and available resources, which may lead to considerable variation in how physical education is understood and enacted in schools. This gap between formal regulation and lived practice highlights the importance of examining not only curricular documents but also the perspectives of those directly involved in teacher education and school implementation. Lower primary physical education plays a crucial role in supporting children’s fitness level, physical and emotional well-being, social development, and cognitive functioning, while also transmitting lifestyle patterns that influence long-term health behaviors (Dollaway et al., 2024). Its effects are embedded in a broader ecological context in which family environments, parental attitudes, and school practices interact (Daly-Smith et al., 2020). However, recent research indicates that different stakeholder groups, such as teachers, parents, and educational institutions, often hold divergent views regarding the aims, value, and developmental priorities of physical education (Jess et al., 2024). These differences can shape both the status of the subject within schools and the directions of its pedagogical development. Despite the recognized importance of physical education in early schooling, empirical evidence integrating the perspectives of teacher education actors, practicing teachers, and parents remains limited, particularly in the Hungarian context. Without a clearer understanding of how these stakeholder groups conceptualize the aims, implementation, and future development of lower primary physical education, efforts to improve teacher preparation and school practice risk remaining fragmented and ineffective. Addressing this gap is essential for aligning teacher education, school expectations, and parental perceptions in a coherent and developmentally grounded manner. Therefore, the primary aim of the present study is to explore and compare the views and experiences related to physical education among key actors in primary teacher education and school practice, specifically teacher educators, primary teachers, and parents, with a focus on the aims, implementation, and potential developmental directions of physical education in the lower primary grades. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The study employed a qualitative research design to explore the aims, practical implementation, and perceived development opportunities of lower primary physical education, as well as the preparatory role of primary teacher education in this process. A qualitative approach was considered particularly appropriate given the exploratory nature of the research and its focus on understanding participants’ experiences, meanings, and interpretations. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews, which provided a flexible yet systematic framework for capturing participants’ perspectives. This method enabled the researcher to address core thematic areas while allowing participants to elaborate on issues they perceived as most relevant, thereby facilitating the emergence of nuanced and context-sensitive insights. The sample consisted of 39 participants recruited from three Hungarian higher education institutions offering primary teacher education programs, as well as from associated school practice contexts in which primary teachers are prepared to teach all lower primary subjects, including physical education. Participants were selected using purposive sampling to ensure the inclusion of key stakeholder groups involved in the planning, delivery, and evaluation of lower primary physical education. The sample comprised student teachers enrolled in primary teacher education programs (n = 12; full-time and part-time), teacher educators (n = 6), program leaders responsible for curriculum design (n = 3), school-based mentors supervising teaching practice (n = 3), in-service primary school teachers (n = 9), parents of lower primary pupils (n = 6). The sample included 24 women (61.5%) and 15 men (38.5%), reflecting the gender distribution typical of primary education. Interview questions were organized around predefined thematic areas focusing on interpretations of the aims and educational value of lower primary physical education, experiences related to its everyday implementation, perceptions of the role and effectiveness of primary teacher education in preparing teachers for physical education. All interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using thematic content analysis. The analytic process involved repeated readings of the transcripts, followed by iterative and systematic coding. Codes were gradually refined and grouped into higher-order themes, allowing for the identification of recurring patterns, dominant narratives, and contrasting interpretations across stakeholder groups. Ethical standards were upheld throughout the research process. Participation was voluntary, and all participants were informed about the purpose of the study and their right to withdraw at any time. Anonymity and confidentiality were ensured by removing identifiable information from transcripts and reports, and data were handled in accordance with applicable ethical guidelines. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Lower primary physical education was primarily conceptualized as a means of fostering enjoyment of movement and creating positive movement experiences. Participants emphasized that developing a lasting predisposition toward regular physical activity should precede performance-oriented or sport-specific goals. This understanding was articulated by student teachers, parents, and practicing teachers alike, highlighting enjoyment, intrinsic motivation and active participation as foundational aims of early physical education. Participants frequently noted a gap between intended aims and everyday practice. This discrepancy was often attributed to methodological limitations, varying teacher attitudes, and differences in pedagogical confidence. Positive movement experiences were associated with playful, success-oriented, and emotionally safe learning environments. Stakeholders emphasized that movement becomes meaningful when pupils experience competence, autonomy, and the absence of fear or failure. Parents, in particular, highlighted the central role of the teacher, suggesting that children’s attitudes toward movement are highly sensitive to teachers’ instructional style and interpersonal approach. With regard to development opportunities, participants consistently stressed the importance of teacher creativity, methodological preparedness, and reflective practice, rather than material resources or equipment availability. High-quality physical education was widely perceived as achievable, provided that teachers possess appropriate pedagogical tools and motivation. However, interviews with student teachers revealed that some entered teacher education with negative prior experiences of physical education and perceived the subject as having a relatively low status, which was seen as potentially influencing later teaching practices. Overall, the findings suggest that the aims and implementation of lower primary physical education are shaped by a dynamic interaction between early movement experiences, teacher education processes, and school-based practice. Based on these results, a key implication for future research is the need to develop measurable pedagogical dimensions of movement experience in lower primary education, enabling systematic identification of teaching approaches that most effectively support positive, inclusive, and motivating movement experiences.
