14. Communities, Families and Schooling in Educational Research
Paper Student-Led Projects as a Key to De-Encapsulation of the School 1: Tampere University, Finland; 2: University of Helsinki Presenting Author:In traditional classrooms, learning materials often become the main focus rather than tools for understanding the world (Engeström, 2015). Engeström (1991) identified the problem of school encapsulation, where education fails to equip students with the skills needed for real-world challenges, leading to alienation from their schoolwork. To address this, he proposed an expansive learning process, suggesting that “the object of school learning should be radically widened to include the context of criticism, discovery, and application of the given contents.” This approach seeks to go beyond institutional boundaries by creating networks of learning from below. It involves educators, students, parents, and stakeholders in transforming practices through conflict analysis rather than top-down reforms. The focus is on confronting contradictions and harnessing collective insights. Yet, a key question remains: can schools be motivated to undertake such transformation? As Artiles (2011) notes, changing the traditional education system is challenging. There has been increasing interest in opening schools, encouraging student influence on societal issues, and expanding learning environments. However, few studies focus on students’ learning processes starting genuinely from their ideas. Often, students are seen merely as information providers, with adults shaping the learning activities and limiting student agency. This adult control risks overlooking something crucial (Kokko, 2025). A recent study by Erstad et al. (2025) highlighted that formal education systems face major challenges in engaging students with urgent issues affecting their future amid rapid change and social problems. Currently, education worldwide struggles with issues like rising absenteeism and a growing sense of irrelevance, indicating that traditional solutions are insufficient (see i.g. McGorry et al., McPherson et al, Salmela-Aro, 2022) Three decades later, it may be time to explore the expansive learning approach and its potential to break down school encapsulation through Change Laboratory (CL) interventions (Virkkunen & Newhamn, 2013) grounded in cultural-historical activity theory (CHAT) and conducted in school settings. The CL intervention method is a participatory analysis and design approach grounded in CHAT and aiming at fostering expansive learning and transformative agency (Sannino & Engeström, 2017). First formulated and implemented in 1995, the CL method was created to tackle complex challenges within activity contexts that demand innovative solutions. Since then, it has been applied in over 30 countries across diverse settings, including education, workplaces, and communities. The key concept in this study is expansive de-encapsulation of the school. Expansive de-encapsulation “seeks to expand the object and motive of school learning and school instruction, not only in terms of geographic and social space but also in terms of substantive contents and ethical-political commitments” (Engeström et al., 2023, p. 128). In prior research, an analysis method for investigating the expansive de-encapsulation of school was developed (Engeström et al., 2023, p. 128). In line with this method, expansive de-encapsulation can be identified with the help of the following criteria: 1) It is based on the students’ own initiatives, concerns and interests, formulated and pursued in dialogue and collaboration with instructors and other stakeholders. 2) It takes shape in longitudinal collective efforts that go beyond short-term individual self-interests and are connected to the advancement of the common good. 3) It seeks critical dialogue with and anchoring in the contents and forms of regular instruction in school subjects. 4) It initiates and maintains durable partnerships between the school and the surrounding communities, including various activity systems that are oriented toward the promotion of human flourishing and the common good. This study investigates the following research question: What types of expansive de-encapsulation actions were taken in students’ projects produced in two CL interventions, and how were these actions generated? Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used We invited 8th-grade students, school staff, key stakeholders, and external experts to participate in CL interventions at two urban Finnish schools over one school year. The aim was to create a process in which students’ interests could emerge naturally and be developed into meaningful projects. The process began from students’ own ideas, concerns, and interests, without restricting initiatives through predefined topics, curriculum demands, or grading pressures. Students were free to choose topics of personal interest for long-term projects. This study focuses on two of the eleven projects produced during the interventions: the Documentary project and the Recess project. The Documentary project addressed bullying and acceptance through a documentary film, while the Recess project focused on developing recess activities, such as homework recess and afternoon snacks. The data consist of recordings from CL sessions (n=27) related to these two projects. All recordings were professionally transcribed, resulting in a corpus of 193,658 words. The analysis began with an examination of expansive de-encapsulation actions, using the three dimensions of the Engeström et al. (2023a) framework. The first dimension addresses the directionality and scope, which can occur at four levels: expanding from the classroom to the wider school, extending beyond the school, bringing the wider school into the classroom, and introducing the outside world into the school. The second dimension concerns the individuals or groups executing these actions, categorised as individuals, groups, or organisations—such as principals or NGO representatives. The third dimension involves the vehicles of action: movement of people, text/discourse, or imaginaries. The second step of the analysis adopts an abductive approach to identifying the steps in the process of object-formation. Through iterative reading of the transcripts, I identified different phases and turning points (Rantavuori et al., 2016) in the process of object formation. Additionally, I explored the expansion of the object on three dimensions: socio-spatial, temporal and ethical-political (Engeström et al., 2003). In the context of CHAT, the object-formation process is not predetermined and follows a unique set of steps each time. In this analysis process, the following six steps were identified: 1) General level; 2) More precise; 3) Expansion; 4) Attempt at stabilisation; 5) Reaching more than one level; and 6) Enactment into a material product. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Findings show a rich number of expansive de-encapsulation actions across both projects. Despite differences, one centred on the school, the other on outside settings, the range of actions was substantial. This suggests that when learning begins from students’ initiatives, schools tend to become de-encapsulated. The Documentary project involved more actions (n=44) than the Recess project (n=33). Both projects were outward- and inward-oriented, with the Documentary project showing a stronger outward focus. Actions were fairly evenly distributed between groups and individuals. Organisational actions were more prevalent in the Recess project. Text and talk were the most frequently used vehicles, especially in the Documentary project, while people were more actively engaged in the Recess project. Imagination was utilised in both. A five-step object formation process occurred in both projects, showing that expansive de-encapsulation actions stemmed from the specific project objects and were connected to their material enactment. Expansive de-encapsulation actions extended beyond opening classrooms and schools, driven by a powerful object motivating the process. For these students, the project was about more than opening the school; it involved resolving a key conflict related to a significant object. Both groups sought to improve conditions for themselves and others on a larger scale. Through this process, students learned to influence important issues. Positive feedback revealed adolescents' hidden potential. The process highlighted the importance of student autonomy and ownership, demonstrating how student-led initiatives can influence the school environment and societal change. This links student-led projects to broader educational and social transformations, emphasising the role of expansive de-encapsulation in driving these changes. The expansive learning process can break the school encapsulation. Networks of learning emerge, starting with the students and transcending traditional school boundaries. Paper Building Strengths and Well-being: Implementing Positive Pedagogy in Primary School The Maria Grzegorzewska Universty, Poland Presenting Author:Positive pedagogy can be situated within a humanistic and pragmatic-activist perspective. It draws on the achievements of New Education and Critical Pedagogy, as well as insights from other social sciences. At its core lies the assumption that education should foster students’ potential while simultaneously supporting their well-being (Cabanas & Gonzalez-Lamas, 2022). Positive pedagogy links learning and school experiences with positive emotions and the cultivation of students’ strengths. In this approach, school is envisioned as a space for engaging, meaningful activities, alongside the deliberate development of positive interpersonal relationships and social-emotional competencies (Seligman & Csikszentmihalyi, 2000). In international academic discourse, positive pedagogy is increasingly recognized as a framework for building resilience and promoting social engagement. Its interdisciplinary character offers substantial opportunities for research and for designing practical interventions in schools and other educational settings aimed at enhancing adolescent participation and well-being, while also addressing disadvantage and social exclusion. This perspective is particularly important for the growing prevalence of mental health problems among young people. In 2021, mental health difficulties affected 19% of boys and 16% of girls aged 15–19 across Europe, while in Poland mental disorders were reported in 10.8% of children and adolescents aged 10–19 (UNICEF, 2021). These data underscore the urgent need to prioritize mental health support within educational systems. Despite this, positive pedagogy remains marginally represented in Polish educational practice and research. This study aims to provide a preliminary identification and analysis of how the principles of positive pedagogy are implemented in schools among students aged 12–15, with particular emphasis on their impact on student well-being, the development of individual potential, and the enhancement of aspirations and social participation. In addition, the study seeks to contribute to the body of knowledge on positive pedagogy by examining possibilities for its institutional implementation in order to increase the effectiveness of educational practices. Another objective is the development of research tools suitable for investigating positive pedagogy in school settings. The study addresses two research questions:
Data are collected using four questionnaires. The theoretical framework guiding the construction of the research instruments is Martin Seligman’s PERMA model. Although originally developed to examine individual well-being across various life domains, the PERMA model has been widely adapted and applied in educational research. The research was carried out within the framework of the project funded by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education entitled “School on Plus! Elements of Positive Pedagogy in Polish Schools from the Perspectives of Students and Teachers” (MNiSW/2025/DPI/35). The study received positive approval from the University Ethics Committee (39-2024/2025). Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The study utilizes a quantitative approach designed as a pilot study to identify the presence of positive pedagogy elements in the Polish primary schools. The data collection process is currently ongoing, with a target sample of 120 students and 30 teachers, providing a dyadic perspective. The participants in the study are students and teachers from a public primary school in Warsaw, Poland. Data collection follows ethical guidelines: written parental consent is obtained for all minor participants, and students are informed of their right to give or withhold consent verbally. The study employed four questionnaires for students and teachers assessing school well-being and the presence and perception of positive pedagogy elements, based on established international and Polish research instruments: 1. Well-being at school. Questionnaire for students; 2. Well-being at school. Questionnaire for teachers; 3. Positive pedagogy at school. Questionnaire for students; 4. Positive pedagogy at school. Questionnaire for teachers. The instruments developed for students and teachers are fully compatible, allowing for direct comparison of responses between the two groups. The questionnaires were based on tools related to the issues addressed in the study. Their nature made it impossible to achieve the research objectives. With reference to the assumptions of PERMA model authors identified areas that were considered key to diagnosing the implementation of positive pedagogy in the school settings: relationships, cooperation, involvement and satisfaction with the acquisition and transfer of knowledge, positive feedback, support for proposals for change and own initiatives, consideration of needs, opportunities and interests. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The study is ongoing, with data collection largely completed and statistical analyses forthcoming to examine links between positive pedagogy and students’ well-being, educational potential, academic aspirations, and social participation. In Poland, research on positive pedagogy remains limited, with few standardized instruments and scarce empirical evidence. This project represents an exploratory application of the PERMA model in primary schools, integrating both student and teacher perspectives. It offers an initial insight into how positive pedagogy is implemented and perceived in Polish schools and constitutes a first step toward developing reliable research tools for broader studies and future international replication. Several outcomes are anticipated. First, positive pedagogy elements—such as supportive relationships, engagement, and recognition of individual strengths—are expected to be present to varying degrees in grades 6–8, with possible differences between student and teacher perceptions. Second, higher levels of positive pedagogy are assumed to correlate positively with students’ well-being, educational potential, academic aspirations, and social participation. Third, specific practices, including positive feedback, encouragement of initiative, and supportive teacher–student relationships, are expected to show stronger associations with particular aspects of student development. Finally, contextual factors such as school culture, teaching practices, and resource availability are assumed to influence both the level and effectiveness of implementation. Overall, the study aims to inform future research, support the development of school-based measurement tools for positive pedagogy, and ultimately contribute to practical recommendations for educators and school leaders. In the long term, these findings may help foster learning environments that promote student well-being, positive development, and active participation, especially in times of polycrisis. Paper Teachers as Curriculum Designers: Embedding Technology in Life Skills Education 1: Vilnius Business College; 2: Vytautas Magnus University Presenting Author:This paper examines the early-stage implementation of the newly introduced Life Skills (Gyvenimo įgūdžių) education programme in Lithuania, with a focus on teacher curriculum design, digital participation, and professional preparation. Life Skills education was formally introduced into the national curriculum in 2023 as a transversal and interdisciplinary subject aimed at strengthening learners’ personal, social, civic, and digital competences. The subject integrates previously fragmented areas such as social-emotional learning, health education, prevention programmes, and civic competencies, while granting schools and teachers a high degree of curricular autonomy. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study adopts a qualitative research design to examine how teachers enact curriculum design and integrate digital technologies in the context of the newly introduced Life Skills education programme. The methodological approach draws on established qualitative traditions that treat teacher-developed lesson plans as key empirical artefacts reflecting pedagogical reasoning, instructional priorities, and curriculum interpretation (Alicwadey et al., 2024). The primary data source consists of Life Skills lesson plans designed by in-service teachers across three consecutive implementation cycles between May 2024 and May 2025. Lesson plans were analysed as documentary evidence of how teachers operationalise transversal competences and digital participation in practice, particularly in contexts where methodological guidance is limited and teachers are required to exercise professional autonomy (Alicwadey et al., 2024). To complement document analysis, focus group discussions were conducted following each implementation cycle. Focus groups were used to capture teachers’ reflective accounts of their pedagogical decisions, including the selection and purpose of digital tools, perceived challenges, and professional learning needs. This approach aligns with qualitative research that emphasises the importance of teachers’ voices in understanding how educational practices are shaped in situ (Ozturk et al., 2025). Lesson plans were analysed using qualitative content analysis, focusing on the pedagogical purpose of digital technologies rather than specific tools. Coding examined how digital practices supported communication, learner autonomy, collaboration, and access to learning resources. Focus group transcripts were analysed thematically to identify recurring patterns related to curriculum design, professional confidence, and the enactment of transversal skills. The combination of document analysis and reflective discussion enabled a nuanced examination of how curriculum-level intentions are translated into everyday teaching practice. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The findings indicate that teachers actively assumed the role of curriculum designers when implementing Life Skills education, particularly in relation to digital technology integration. Lesson plan analysis shows that digital tools were selected purposefully to support communication, access to resources, and self-directed learning, rather than being used as an obligatory or decorative component of instruction. Teachers expressed appreciation for curricular flexibility while also highlighting the need for clearer guidance regarding digital strategy, ethical considerations, and assessment approaches. Overall, the study suggests that although autonomy is essential for innovation in newly introduced interdisciplinary subjects, sustained professional support is necessary to ensure coherent and equitable enactment of Life Skills education and its underlying principles of digital participation.
