Paper Empowering Emerging Scholars: Reflective Practice through Structured Teaching Observations 1: Abu Dhabi University, United Arab Emirates; 2: University of Canterbury, New Zealand Presenting Author:Academics often seek to improve their curricula or feel compelled to make changes based primarily on student evaluations, sometimes relying on this source alone. However, research shows that such evaluations do not inherently lead to better teaching practices (Novák, 2023), largely because students typically lack the disciplinary and pedagogical expertise needed to provide informed feedback on teaching quality (NASEM, 2020; Boysen, Richmond and Gurung, 2015). This limitation reduces the appropriateness of student evaluations, especially when used in isolation. To advance teaching quality more meaningfully, institutions can draw on broader conceptualizations of good teaching. Boyer’s influential framework highlights the importance of student engagement, active learning, and the development of higher-order thinking skills such as critical and creative thinking (Boyer, 1990; Brahm, 2023). In line with these principles, educators are encouraged to focus on thoughtful curriculum design and engage in reflective analysis of their pedagogical approaches (Benson and Ward, 2013). Various models of teaching review support this work. On the more formal end of the spectrum is evaluative review, typically conducted by senior staff to assess teaching performance for purposes such as promotion and tenure. Mid-range developmental reviews, often led by academic developers, focus on diagnosing issues and recommending improvements and may be embedded in teaching-certification programmes. At the informal end, peer review fosters collaborative reflection among colleagues on their teaching methods and approaches (Cutroni and Paladino, 2023). Classroom observations—whether in-person or via online/video recordings—offer a particularly valuable means of evaluating teaching in action. Yet they also present challenges. Observations require substantial time and effort from both observers and observees (Durham et al., 2018; Teoh, Ming, and Khan, 2016), and questions remain about the reliability of the resulting feedback, particularly when observers lack formal training in pedagogy or didactics (Robinson and Hope, 2013). The need for robust and informed teaching evaluation contrasts with common career trajectories in higher education. Academic advancement typically depends on disciplinary expertise and research productivity, while pedagogical knowledge and skill—though central to academic roles—often receive less emphasis (Oliveira, Nada and Magalhães, 2025; Cassuto, 2022). Some countries have addressed this gap by introducing structured faculty development programmes, including certificates, diplomas, and master’s degrees in higher education teaching (e.g., in the UK, Ireland, and the Netherlands). Yet PhD-level preparation in teaching lags behind; only a minority of institutions require doctoral students to complete credit-bearing coursework in pedagogy, despite expectations that they will acquire teaching and mentoring skills (IUA, 2001; Rifkin et al., 2023). This paper presents the design and development of a teaching observation process that integrates professional, peer, and student feedback within an introductory course of a redesigned “Certificate of Teaching in Higher Education.” We describe how pedagogical and didactic experts engaged PhD students—future lecturers—in a three-step observation model comprising pre-observation planning, session observation, and post-observation reflection and debriefing. Parallel peer observations carried out by fellow PhD students provided additional student and peer perspectives. Together, these components formed a comprehensive feedback process designed to support the pedagogical development of both observers and observees. The research question for this study is whether the teaching observation process will empower participants to become reflective practitioners. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The teaching observation detailed here occur during the first core module, “Foundations of Teaching in Higher Education”. We encountered difficulty as some students could teach a session through their Teaching Assistantship (TA), while others had academic-support roles that didn't allow them to lead a session, and some had no TAship and thus no opportunity to teach a BA or MA cohort. To address this, we introduced practicum sessions alongside the seminars for the Foundations course. This allowed those without a teaching opportunity to teach their peers in the course. The practicum comprised twelve 50-minute sessions, divided into three parts. Weeks 1-3 reinforced and provided space to apply knowledge from the seminars on the teaching observation process, drafting teaching philosophy statements, and best practices for creating teaching artifacts (e.g., PowerPoint slides). In weeks 4-6, students prepared a few slides (circa 5) for a 10-minute micro-teaching presentation, receiving feedback from instructor and peers on presentation style and suggestions for improvement. The novel aspect of the practicum was that in weeks 7-12, students who did not have an actual student cohort, taught a topic of their interest and design to their “Certificate of Teaching in Higher Education” peers. Given that participants were not pedagogic experts, we opted for a hybrid model for teaching observations, enabling developmental feedback/feedforward to improve teaching and learning and recognizing the value of professional growth through dialogue and reflection (Yiend et al., 2014). The next step was identifying what information would be useful to the observees to initiate dialogue and reflection and what instrument could record that information. Nulty's (2001) dimensions of good teaching were a good starting point. Some dimensions (1, 5, 6, 7, 7.2) address constructive alignment as a foundational aspects of curriculum design. This includes aspects such as teaching objectives, learning outcomes, assessment, and teaching material (Biggs 2022). These should be addressed before the teaching observation. Dimensions focusing on advanced content knowledge, pedagogical skills, personal characteristics, and concern for students could be highlighted during the observation (Dimensions 2, 3, 7.1). Lastly, dimensions related to commitment to formative assessment procedures and improving teaching (Dimensions 4 and 8) should be reflected upon after the observation, following a suitable amount of time (few days) to allow for meaningful reflection. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The discussions and reflections students engaged in during planning and conducting a teaching session aimed to make them ponder who they are as lecturers and/or who they aspire to be. This contemplation started when drafting their initial teaching philosophy statement. Throughout the program, we emphasized that their participation in the Certificate signified their interest in and commitment to developing and improving their teaching practice, leading to informed and educated choices about curriculum design. The three-phase and dual teaching observation we introduced had a threefold purpose. First, it aimed to build confidence by allowing participants to plan and design the teaching session's elements in a scaffolded manner. Seminar and practicum sessions assist participants in creating learning outcomes, designing a PowerPoint presentation, and providing practical strategies for managing a classroom environment. The facilitators’ role in the pre-observation phase has a strong element of pastoral care, by addressing participants’ concerns and making them anticipate potential difficulties or challenges. Second, it aimed to empower participants to become reflective practitioners. At the start of the Foundations course, the seminar and practicum helped participants draft a full teaching philosophy statement, imagining who they want to be as teachers or how they want to evolve. The post-observation phase provided time and space to reflect on the observers' feedback, engage in a discussion, and consolidate this through a reflective piece on the entire activity. Third, the Certificate aimed to expose participants to new teaching methods. We wanted to introduce them to recent developments in teaching, learning, and assessment and inspire them to explore and experiment with approaches, resources, and techniques that might be uncommon or unfamiliar in their fields – challenging signature pedagogies. Paper Focusing on Curricular Coherence through Visual Curriculum Mapping and Metaphor-Based Discussion Prompts 1: Zurich University of Teacher Education, Switzerland; 2: University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland Presenting Author:Our contribution presents a research and development design aimed at strengthening curricular coherence in teacher education using the example of work-integrated study programmes for career changers at two universities of teacher education. Curricular innovation generally involves complex organisational processes involving actors from diverse disciplinary and school cultures, and there is a growing demand for greater flexibility in terms of time, location and structure (Annala et al., 2021; Bajada et al., 2019; Vreuls et al., 2021). Work-integrated study programmes present an even greater challenge due to their focus on workplace pedagogy and individual and collective learning in various learning environments (Billett, 2002). In the context of our study, coherence is understood in conceptual terms (shared vision), in structural terms (course organisation), and as a process that enhances the alignment of learning opportunities across courses and practice settings (Doetjes et al., 2024). The research questions are as follows: 1) How do students and lecturers perceive program coherence? 2) How can visual methods support discussions on complex curricular development? Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study's design draws on the interplay between the intended curriculum (document analysis, visual curriculum representations), the implemented curriculum (classroom observations, video analysis, interviews) and the enacted curriculum (students' perceived coherence, competence assessments) (Tatto & Bankov, 2018). The project combines the following analyses: 1) students’ perceptions of the enacted curriculum (N = 311) and lecturers’ perceptions of the implemented curriculum (N = 30); 2) lecturers’ focus group discussions with students (N = 34); and 3) interviews with faculty members regarding their perceptions of coherence over a two-year period (N = 20). The data were analysed using a design-based research and mixed methods framework (Bryman, 2008). As study programmes comprising many subjects are difficult to grasp, visualisations (visual prompts, metaphors) in terms of boundary objects (Bowker et al., 2015; Schmalz et al., 2022) were employed to encourage participants to discuss curriculum coherence. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The quantitative analysis shows high correlations between the perceptions of students and lecturers regarding conceptual coherence but a moderate correlation between university-based coursework and practical experience. Findings from exploratory group discussions reveal a discrepancy between the current study experience and the desired learning conditions: Participants characterise the present programme using visual metaphors, describing it as an 'obstacle course' or 'labyrinth', which symbolises rigid structures, unclear requirements, and a pronounced theory-practice divide. By contrast, they envisage a 'marketplace' model that would allow for greater individualisation, recognition of prior competencies and more efficient use of limited time. In-depth interviews with lecturers who used visual prompts for curriculum mapping emphasise the importance of coaching as a core element of work-integrated learning. Although lecturers place a high value on coaching, its position within the formal curriculum varies greatly, with some considering it central and others peripheral. The interviews also reveal tensions between needs-based and content-focused coaching, as well as structural constraints such as timetabling, workload planning, and the fact that students have different backgrounds. In sum, the results highlight discrepancies between the design and implementation of the curriculum and the expectations of students and lecturers. They provide a basis for targeted curriculum development but also caution against homogenisation of curricula across contexts. The methodological insights suggest that visual prompts could serve as a tool to foster coherence perception, professional relevance, and strategic orientation when dealing with complex curricular changes. This approach makes a methodologically innovative contribution to strengthening curricular alignment in teacher education programmes. In this paper, we discuss how the dual-method approach of combining curriculum maps with metaphor-based visual prompts can uncover alignment gaps, engage participants across stakeholder groups and support targeted curriculum development. Paper National Curriculum Policymaking, Democracy and Curricular Justice in a Complex World 1: University of Southern Queensland, Australia; 2: Queensland University of Technology, Australia; 3: Griffith University, Australia Presenting Author:This paper will consider how the emergence of national curriculum policies over the past two decades have shaped key debates in what counts as curriculum making, with important implications for equity, access and inclusion in schools and other sites of education (Green et al., 2021; Priestley et al., 2021). Curriculum is fundamentally bound up with national identity and security (Green, 2018), in which the ‘tangled relationship between curriculum and democracy means that curriculum cannot be understood in isolation from the political, economic, social, and cultural conditions in which it is produced and practised’ (Reid & Thomson, 2003, p. xiv). As Pinar (2004) argued, curriculum requires making choices regarding what to remember about the past, beliefs for the present and hopes for the future. As such, the question of how nations frame national curriculum policies is crucial to understanding broader concerns of democratic participation, civic belonging, and social justice (Green, 2018; Mills et al., 2022, 2026). For example, the Australian federal, state and territory education ministers have committed to a curriculum that helps young people to become ‘committed to national values of democracy, equity and justice, and participate in Australia’s civic life’ (Council of Australian Governments, 2019, p. 8). However, Green (2018) raised an important concern regarding national curriculum, which necessarily creates ‘the limits of dissent, of participation, of social imagination’ (p. 274) available to its participants—students, teachers and school communities. We are mindful that ‘there are a multitude of possible curriculum responses to the question of how to provide all young people with high-quality and high-equity educational opportunities’ (Riddle et al., 2023, p. 140). This paper will examine the place of national curriculum policymaking in a volatile, uncertain complex and ambiguous world (Riddle, 2022; Shields, 2013), considering implications for a more socially just schooling that enables young people to thrive, not just survive, in the twenty-first century. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The paper will commence with a comparison of key macro curriculum policies from Asian–Pacific countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Japan to provide an international context before presenting a detailed case study of a national curriculum. The paper will closely examine the Australian Curriculum to illustrate how national curriculum policymaking influences, and is influenced by, discourses of nation-building, democracy, identity and culture in a world characterised by volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity. In addition to an analysis of key curriculum policy texts, official curriculum frameworks and other grey literature from curriculum authorities, education departments and policymakers, the paper will examine how the national curriculum has been represented by key political actors in mainstream media (i.e., news reports, press releases and media commentary), with a focus on how curriculum policymaking is intimately bound up with questions about democracy and curricular justice. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The paper will conclude with a set of propositions for engaging in national curriculum policymaking that support curricular justice and sustain democratic futures for all young people in a complex world. We contend that there is a need for more nuanced policy learning rather than policy borrowing (Mayer & Mills, 2021; Riddle et al., 2026), and that curriculum must become a critical site of international collaboration to increase global efforts to ensure that all young people are able to grow up in a world that is more inclusive, democratic and sustainable.
