Paper Assessment Practices With Digital Media - Teacher Subjectivation in Inclusive Science Classes University of Goettingen, Germany Presenting Author:The design of lessons requires consideration of the diverse needs of students. Particularly in inclusive settings, learning opportunities must be developed and continuously adapted in line with individual abilities, learning levels, and interests in order to provide equal learning opportunities (Werning, 2020). This requires teachers to have comprehensive information about their learning groups. Assessment practice is therefore of great importance when it comes to lesson design (Prengel, 2016). However, assessment is a complex process that can be carried out through various practices and with different goals in mind. The discourse on (inclusive) assessment distinguishes between two basic approaches: 1. Summative assessment (Mitchell & Sutherland, 2020) usually takes place at the end of learning phases and is based on formalised assessment tools (e.g. class tests). It is geared towards placing students according to their performance (e.g. through the awarding of grades). 2. Formative assessment (Mitchell & Sutherland, 2020) is integrated into everyday teaching and is therefore not tied to specific test periods. Nor is it tied to specific assessment tools, but instead uses a variety of information in a flexible manner. It is fundamentally geared towards the ongoing adaptation of teaching. Inclusive assessment incorporates both of these approaches but emphasises the particular importance of formative assessment, as it is especially well suited for the assessment of the individual needs of students in heterogeneous learning groups (Walm et al., 2017). However, studies indicate that teachers often have insufficient assessment skills or do not use comprehensive assessment methods in their teaching (McElvany et al., 2023). In this context, teachers also criticise a lack of time for assessment practices (Creagh et al., 2025). At the same time, the increasing digitalisation of schools and teaching offers significant opportunities for the design of inclusive lessons, but also presents challenges (Schulz, 2023). This also applies to inclusive assessment. It is frequently emphasised that teachers' digital media competencies are often insufficiently developed (Engel & Jörissen 2022). Although digital media are increasingly finding their way into the classrooms, this is only gradually changing the way teachers design their lessons (Proske et al., 2023). The implementation of digital media cannot simply mean the transfer of analogue media into digital formats (Gervé et al., 2023) and therefore requires a shift in the roles of teachers. These general challenges are situated within specific conditions of subject teaching. While all school subjects come with their own specific challenges and opportunities, science classes can be emphasised as particularly challenging, when it comes to the implementation of digital media as well as assessment practices. The inherent material complexity of the subject and the need to teach demanding content at an abstract level places high demands on teachers’ actions (Stinken-Rösner & Abels, 2021). At the same time, science classes also offer opportunities for inclusive teaching, as activity-oriented and group-based approaches can support individual learning success (Minner et al., 2010). Overall, science teachers operate within a complex field of requirements and opportunities when it comes to inclusive teaching with digital media. This raises the question of how teachers in inclusive settings integrate digital media into their assessment activities and which specific forms of assessment practices (summative and formative) are associated with the use of digital media, and in what way. This dissertation project addresses these questions (among others) from a praxeological perspective (Schatzki, 2012). With a focus on processes of teacher subjectivation, ethnographic observations and interviews with teachers and students were conducted. The analysis, based on grounded theory (Strauss & Corbin, 2010), enabled the open reconstruction of different modes of teacher subjectivation in the use of digital media for assessment practices. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used For the dissertation project, data were collected in eight different classes at the lower secondary level. Most classes were led by a team of two teachers, usually one regular teacher and one teacher for special educational needs. All schools were integrated comprehensive schools, the classes therefore had rather heterogeneous student bodies, including some students with special educational needs. Some classes were held in regular classrooms, while others were held in science classrooms. Ethnographic observations were conducted across a number of lessons for each class. Additionally, interviews were conducted with both teachers and students to reflect on the classroom practices and the use of digital media. The observation protocols and the interview transcripts were analysed based on the Grounded Theory (Strauss & Corbin, 2010). This allowed for the reconstruction of the teachers’ subjectivation based on the classroom practices. This was also based on praxeological assumptions. The praxeological perspective (Schatzki, 2012) on subjectivation is interested in the positioning and actions of all actors in a given situation. Through specific practices, all actors are set in relation to one another, resulting in unique and constantly changing subject positions. In this regard, materiality, knowledge, routines, transformation, and norms are of particular importance. Firstly, all social practice is performed materially. This includes human bodies as well as artefacts as material actors, both potentially influencing social practice equally. With regard to artefacts, a digital mediality is of highlighted importance for the research project. Mediality is understood as the manifestation of symbols in practice. The meaning of these symbols is defined by the practice itself. The digital format of mediality is defined by making digital information perceptible (as symbols) through material devices. This includes, for example, making them audible through speakers or visible through monitors. The performance of actions is based on the knowledge of how to do so, for example the knowledge of how to write with ten fingers on a keyboard. While this knowledge refers to and results in specific routines of practice, each individual practice will always differ slightly, as circumstances are never exactly the same. Practice is therefore always subject to change. The reconstruction of teachers’ subjectivation requires the consideration of all these interrelated dimensions of social practice to understand their position within the teaching situation. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The results of the project can be subsumed into four main categories of teacher subjectivation. Each of them is comprised of several sub-categories that reconstruct different assessment practices and their relationship to digital media. One central category is the Assessing Teacher. It shows the ways in which teachers actions are geared towards the collection of information about their student body as well as about individual students. Four sub-types can be distinguished. Firstly, the Exploring Teacher engages in relatively open assessment practices aimed at understanding students’ needs and perspectives. Digital media and artefacts play only a minor role and have low agency in these practices. Secondly, the Reviewing Teacher assesses on a content-related level. The mode of assessment is much more closed than that of the Exploring Teachers, as it aims at specific subject knowledge and is therefore in much closer proximity to a summative assessment logic. Here, artefacts (particularly digital media) are highly relevant, as they can enable the simultaneous assessment of all students. Thirdly, the Evaluating Teacher operates within clearly defined examination situations and assesses student performance on a formal level. Digital media can be highly significant, for example in presentation-based assessments. Lastly, Teachers who Encourage Reflection reverse the logic of assessment by prompting students to assess their own learning. The use of digital and non-digital artefacts in these practices varies considerably. At ECER 2026, the category of the Assessing Teacher as a mode of teacher subjectivation will be presented as a key result of the project. The findings will be discussed in relation to current debates on assessment in inclusive settings, with particular attention to the potentials and challenges of digital media. Paper The Cooperative Assembly as an Innovative Learning Environment: Co-construction by Students and Teachers through Action Research 1: University of Quebec at Montreal, Canada; 2: Eastern Ontario Catholic School Board Presenting Author:Contemporary social transformations, marked by teacher shortages (Mukamurera et al., 2023), increasing complexity of school contexts (Jensen, 2021), and growing demands for inclusive education, call for a reconceptualization of educational spaces as dynamic, relational, and participatory learning environments. Within this context, classroom management represents a central issue, both for students’ academic success (Bernier et al., 2021) and for teachers’ professional retention and well-being (Mukamurera et al., 2020). In this broader context of accelerating social transformations, cooperative classroom management practices can be understood as situated yet meaningful responses to the need to create more resilient, inclusive, and participatory educational spaces. Grounded in the perspective of innovative learning environments (ILEs), this paper presents an action research project (Dumouchel & Rondeau, 2024–2025) focused on the implementation of Cooperative Classroom Management Practices (CCMPs), including the cooperative assembly, at the preschool and elementary levels. These practices are based on a redefinition of traditional roles within educational spaces, emphasizing recognition of students’ agency, their active participation, and the co-construction of conditions that support learning. They engage teachers in a posture oriented toward guidance and accompaniment rather than control (Bucheton & Soulé, 2009). CCMPs draw on cooperative learning principles such as positive interdependence, individual and collective responsibility, the development of social skills, and the establishment of democratic classroom processes (Plante, 2012; Sénéchal et al., 2023). They promote shared pedagogical leadership between teachers and students (Freiberg & Lamb, 2009; Dumouchel et al., 2022). Within this framework, teachers and students in Ontario (Canada) experimented with transforming traditional cooperation councils into cooperative assemblies, conceived as innovative learning environments better aligned with their educational realities. Through these environments, students were invited to play an active role in regulating classroom climate, developing social skills, and fostering self-regulation. This presentation will bring into dialogue the experiential perspective of one participating teacher and the scientific findings identified by a member of the research team, offering complementary practitioner and researcher viewpoints. The overarching objective of this action research was to understand how CCMPs can be implemented and optimally integrated into the daily practices of preschool and elementary teachers. More specifically, the study sought to co-investigate with participating educators the implementation of these practices and to identify conditions that facilitate their effective deployment in classrooms. This approach aligns closely with the ECER thematic focus on roles and participation, as it examines transformations in professional postures, students’ roles as collaborators, and the contribution of communities of practice as collective spaces for professional development. An innovative, evolving co-investigation process was implemented, consisting of four interconnected phases: professional development, classroom experimentation, participation in a community of practice, and reinvestment of learning. The study highlights the importance of collaborative structures in supporting the appropriation of new classroom management practices that require shifts in both student and teacher roles. The findings highlight the importance of a teaching posture oriented toward accompaniment rather than control and invite critical reflection on hierarchical structures in traditional educational settings, as well as on the conditions necessary for the emergence of more collaborative models in educational practice, teacher education, and research. These findings may inform similar initiatives in other educational contexts seeking to foster participatory and cooperative classroom practices. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Given that the study originated from the needs of the partner educational setting and that close collaboration was essential, an action research methodology was selected. One defining feature of this approach is that research is conducted with and for participants rather than on them (Reason & Bradbury, 2008). Rooted in a pragmatist paradigm, action research assumes that scientific knowledge is generated through action (Roy & Prévost, 2013). The project was conducted in collaboration with six preschool and elementary teachers, two pedagogical advisors, and a university-based research team. The research process followed the six iterative and interdependent stages of action research described by Guay and Gagnon (2021): defining the current situation, identifying the desired situation, planning action, implementation, observation, co-analysis, and practice adjustment. An additional preliminary phase “stage zero” was included to prepare the research context. Data collection relied on multiple complementary tools, including audiovisual recordings of classroom management practices, communities of practice, and both group and individual interviews. Audiovisual recordings enabled direct observation without the presence of an external observer (Tremblay & Perrier, 2006), allowing for fine-grained analysis of practices in authentic contexts. Classroom video data were manually analyzed using NVivo software through sequential thematic analysis (Paillé & Mucchielli, 2021; Rondeau & Paillé, 2016). Communities of practice functioned as dynamic spaces for co-training, co-investigation, and co-construction of professional knowledge. At the conclusion of the project, group and individual interviews were conducted. Following transcription, a conceptual category analysis (Paillé & Mucchielli, 2021) was carried out to identify conditions that optimize the implementation of CCMPs in preschool and elementary classrooms (Rondeau & Paillé, 2016). Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This action research highlights the potential of Cooperative Classroom Management Practices (CCMPs), and particularly the cooperative assembly, to transform educational spaces into innovative learning environments grounded in participation and co-construction. By fostering shared leadership between teachers and students, CCMPs contribute to classroom climates that support student engagement, social skill development, and self-regulation. The findings emphasize the importance of organizational, relational, and professional development conditions that support the sustainable appropriation of these practices, notably through collective structures such as communities of practice. They also confirm the relevance of co-investigative approaches in supporting the development of classroom management competence, identified as a key factor in teachers’ professional persistence (Bernier et al., 2021; Mukamurera et al., 2023). From an educational research perspective, this study illustrates the contribution of participatory methodologies to understanding and accompanying transformations in learning environments that are not only innovative, but also capable of reshaping the roles of classroom actors. It opens avenues for transfer into both initial teacher education and continuing professional development and contributes to advancing knowledge on the conditions that optimize the implementation of cooperative practices in classroom settings. Paper Finding Common Ground Across Educational Traditions: Developments of Recontextualizations Through an Erasmus+ Project Promoting Intercultural Understanding and Media Literacy NTNU, Norway Presenting Author:Education is increasingly denationalized through the influence of international organizations such as the OECD and the EU and through cross-country collaborations like Erasmus+ projects. However, we still know little about how national educational traditions and values are negotiated and reshaped within such collaborative frameworks. Vlogging Beyond Classrooms (ViBes) is an Erasmus+ project designed to foster media literacy and intercultural understanding among primary school pupils across three European countries. Its overarching aim is to support schools in integrating vlogging into their pedagogical practices, thereby enhancing inclusivity and cultural awareness. Used both as a method and a learning tool, vlogging can expand pupils’ communicative repertoires and help teachers recognize competencies that may otherwise remain invisible. In this study, classes of 11–12-year-old pupils from Norway, Belgium, and Ireland participated in a series of vlog exchanges aimed at promoting cultural understanding through digital skill development. The study investigates how teachers in the three countries recontextualized the ViBes project over time, with particular attention to the evolution of their pedagogical practices. All teachers received an introductory course in vlogging from experienced media producers affiliated with local universities, along with access to a comprehensive online digital learning resource developed by the same team. Over two academic years, both teaching practices and pupils’ vlogs developed through the ongoing collaboration. As educational discourses—such as student-centered vlogging—are recontextualized into practice, ideological influences inevitably shape their implementation (Bernstein, 2000). It is therefore expected that the ViBes project manifested differently depending on local contexts and actors. Drawing on Bernstein’s (2000) theory, the project is underpinned by an invisible pedagogic orientation associated with the Nordic educational model. This orientation contrasts with the more explicit pedagogical approaches commonly found in other European settings (Blossing, Imsen & Moos, 2014), such as Belgium and Ireland. The central research question is: How did teachers’ recontextualizations of the ViBes project develop over time across the three countries? Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Analytical framework and data The analysis draws on Bernstein’s concepts of visible and invisible pedagogies, which describe contrasting forms of control in pedagogic practice. These orientations can be examined through the concept of framing, which concerns the degree of control over communication. Weak framing (invisible pedagogy) suggests that learners appear to have considerable control over selection, sequencing, pacing, criteria, and social relations. Strong framing (visible pedagogy) indicates explicit control by teachers. The tension between these orientations reflects broader ideological conflicts (Bernstein, 2000) and aligns with differing educational traditions among the three countries, with Norway more strongly associated with invisible pedagogy than Belgium and Ireland. The data corpus includes classroom observations during vlog activities, interviews with students, teachers, and school leaders, as well as vlogs produced by both students and teachers. Additionally, questionnaires were administered to students and teachers. Framing was used as an analytical lens for tracing the development of pedagogical practices. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Findings Preliminary findings indicate notable differences across countries in pupils' development of content creation and technical vlogging skills. Pupils in the Belgian and Irish schools showed more substantial progress over the course of the project, while pupils in the Norwegian school demonstrated comparatively limited development. One possible explanation is that students’ learning trajectories reflect the pedagogical strategies employed: In Norway, the project consistently adhered to an invisible pedagogical orientation, whereas in Belgium and Ireland teachers gradually shifted from visible to more invisible pedagogies. This pattern may suggest that visible pedagogies emphasize the quality of the final product, while invisible pedagogies prioritize the quality of the learning process. Taken together, the findings indicate that a balanced combination of visible and invisible pedagogies may be most conducive to fostering growth in both content-related and technical competencies.
