Paper Teachers’ Digital Relational Competence: Reframing Professional Digital Literacy Through Relational Pedagogy in Online Educational Space 1: Åbo Akademi University, Finland; 2: Umeå University, Sweden Presenting Author:Digitalisation has profoundly reshaped the conditions of teaching, altering how teachers communicate, enact presence, and build relationships with learners. Despite extensive research on teachers’ digital competence and digital literacy, relational aspects of teaching remain under-theorised. This paper addresses this gap by exploring how teachers describe their relational strategies in digital learning environments and by advancing the concept of Teachers’ Digital Relational Competence (TDRC) as a dimension of professional digital literacy and relational pedagogy in online educational space. Viewing education as a relational practice (Bingham & Sidorkin, 2004), our aim is to explore how teachers describe their efforts to create qualitative teacher-student relations online, and to interpret how this aligns with the the theoretical framework of teachers’ relational competence (Aspelin & Jönsson, 2019). Our research questions are:
Empirically, the study draws on open-ended questionnaire responses from 123 Swedish-speaking teachers in Sweden and Finland, all with experience of online teaching. Using a reflexive thematic analysis, teachers’ descriptions of relational practices were first analysed inductively, followed by a theory-driven analysis using Aspelin and Jönsson’s (2019) framework of teachers’ relational competence (TRC) as sensitising concept to examine how digital conditions impact teachers’ relational work. The findings show that teachers’ relational practices remain central in online education but are enacted differently due to altered temporal and spatial conditions. Teachers describe deliberate strategies to compensate for reduced physical co-presence and limited access to embodied cues. Three clusters of strategies were identified pertaining to the framework’s subcompetencies: communicative strategies (e.g. dialectic multimodality, didactic foresight, and managing visibility), socioemotional strategies (e.g. emotional guidance, validation, and affective regulation), and differentiation strategies (e.g. regulating closeness and distance, enabling learner agency, and maintaining professional boundaries). Across these clusters, teachers emphasised anticipatory intentional design, as well as in situ sensitivity and responsiveness as key relational capacities in digital contexts. Conceptually, we conclude that TDRC constitutes a reconfiguration of teachers’ relational competence through the entanglement of human and technological actors in digital learning ecologies. Digital embodiment and relational agency emerge as central features, highlighting how teachers use digital affordances to convey presence, support psychological safety, and empower learners to participate on differentiated terms. By framing TDRC as an integrated relational capacity enacted through digital modalities, the paper contributes to ongoing discussions on professional digital literacy and relational pedagogy. The study concludes by outlining implications for teacher education, professional development, and future research on relational work in digital and postdigital education. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study employed a qualitative research design to explore how teachers articulate relational strategies in digital learning environments. Data were collected through an anonymous online questionnaire distributed in 2023 to Swedish-speaking teachers in Sweden and Finland. The questionnaire formed part of a larger instrument development based on an operationalisation of the Teachers’ Relational Competence (TRC) framework (Aspelin & Jönsson, 2019). The open-ended question analysed in this paper invited participants to describe how they support teacher–student relationships digitally, for instance in distance education contexts. In total, 123 teachers responded to the open-ended question. Responses varied in length and depth, reflecting diverse teaching experiences across educational levels and digital formats. All participants reported prior experience of online teaching. Background variables collected included gender, nationality, age, educational background, and years of teaching experience.The analysis followed a two-phase procedure. First, a data-driven reflexive thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2022) was conducted. Both researchers independently familiarised themselves with the data and generated initial codes capturing patterns of meaning related to teachers’ relational intentions and strategies. Through iterative discussion and refinement, 32 inductive codes were developed and clustered into 11 practice-oriented subthemes representing teachers’ relational strategies in digital environments. In the second phase, these subthemes were further analysed using the TRC framework’s three subcompetencies (communicative, socioemotional and differentiation competence) as sensitising concepts (Bowen, 2020). This theory-driven analysis aimed to examine how digital conditions reconfigure established dimensions of relational competence. The iterative analysis was reflexive in viewing the three subcompetences as interrelated, and thus examining how relational strategies and intentions comprised parallel dimensions across the subcompetencies. The study adopts a cautious interpretive stance, recognising that the data reflect self-reported practices rather than observed interaction. While this limits insight into micro-interactional dynamics, the approach provides valuable access to teachers’ intentional design of relational work in digital contexts. Ethical considerations included informed consent, anonymity, and secure data handling throughout the research process. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This study contributes to research on digital education by foregrounding teachers’ relational work as a central, yet often overlooked, professional ability (cf. Segerby & Aspelin, 2023). By analysing teachers’ relational strategies in digital learning environments, the study demonstrates that relational competence remains foundational to teaching but is qualitatively reconfigured under digital conditions. The findings show that TDRC is operationalised through deliberate design, anticipation, and responsiveness (cf. Wiklund-Engblom, 2018). Communicative, socioemotional, and differentiation competence in the TRC framework remain analytically robust dimensions, yet digitalisation reshapes how they are enacted. Teachers rely on multimodal communication, explicit emotional guidance, and differentiated participation options to compensate for reduced visibility and attenuated embodied cues. In doing so, they actively manage tensions between presence and distance, inclusion and integrity, availability and professional boundaries. Conceptually, the study advances TDRC as an integrated relational capacity enabled and constrained by altered temporality and spatial transformation. Two reconfigurations are particularly salient: digital embodiment, i.e. teachers’ ability to convey presence despite physical absence, and relational agency, i.e. how teachers scaffold learners’ capacity to participate, express identity, and manage relational engagement online (cf. Wiklund-Engblom & Bonnevie, in press/2026). Thus, TDRC deserves recognition as a key component in contemporary education. Our findings have important implications for teacher education and professional development. Relational competence should be explicitly integrated into digital competence frameworks, rather than treated as teachers’ tacit knowledge. As digital and hybrid education continue to expand, understanding and supporting TDRC is essential for sustainable and inclusive educational practices. Institutions and policymakers must recognise that relational work in digital education requires time, emotional labour, and structural support (cf. Fawns, 2019; Sidorkin, 2022). Future research should include observational and interactional studies to capture how TDRC unfolds in practice, as well as learners’ perspectives on relational agency and psychological safety. Paper From Access to Meaningful Use: An Orientation Framework for Digital and AI-Supported Practices in Adult Basic Education University of Education Weingarten, Germany Presenting Author:Across Europe, adult basic education is increasingly shaped by rapid digital transformation and the growing presence of artificial intelligence in everyday services, learning environments, and administrative processes. For adults with low literacy skills, these developments intensify existing inequalities and risk reinforcing exclusion from social participation. In this context, digital inclusion cannot be reduced to access to devices or connectivity; it requires meaningful, learner-centred use of digital tools that aligns with learners’ everyday practices, motivations, and capabilities (Reder, 2015; Grotlüschen et al., 2020). Against this backdrop, the increasing visibility of AI-supported applications further intensifies the need for pedagogical orientation in adult basic education. This paper introduces and reflects on an orientation framework for the pedagogical analysis of digital tools in adult basic education. The framework is designed to support adult educators in making informed decisions about the use of digital and AI-supported applications in non-formal and open learning contexts. It responds to a challenge shared across European adult education systems: an expanding and rapidly changing digital landscape combined with limited pedagogical guidance for assessing the suitability of digital tools for learners with low literacy (European Commission, 2020; Cedefop, 2020). Conceptually, the framework builds on Reder’s Digital Inclusion Pathway, which understands digital inclusion as a gradual and non-linear process encompassing access, the development of digital taste, and readiness for engaging with digital media, while conceptualising digital literacy as an individually shaped and context-dependent outcome rather than a fixed end stage (Reder, 2015). Extending this model, the orientation framework shifts the analytical focus from access to meaningful use, foregrounding motivation, usability, and relevance for learners’ everyday lives. The concept of digital taste plays a central role in this process, as it highlights learners’ interests, preferences, and confidence as key conditions for sustained engagement with digital media (David, Langer, & Koppel, 2022). The guiding research question of the paper is: Empirically and methodologically, the framework is informed by findings from a multi-year research project on digital media use in adult basic education, in which heuristic evaluation methods were developed and applied to analyse the suitability of digital learning programmes and everyday digital tools for adults with low literacy (Koppel, 2017; Koppel & Langer, 2020). The evaluation criteria address key dimensions of inclusive learning environments, including learnability, self-descriptiveness, perceptual guidance, task appropriateness, controllability, joy of use, and intercultural sensitivity. Rather than producing normative rankings of tools, the framework is explicitly designed as a reflective analytical instrument that supports professional judgement and pedagogical decision-making. While the digital tools analysed in the underlying studies are predominantly German-language applications, the paper argues for the transferability of the framework to other European contexts. The orientation framework focuses on structural and pedagogical challenges that are widely shared across adult education systems, such as heterogeneous learner groups, uneven digital experiences, limited instructional time, and increasing expectations to integrate digital and AI-based solutions responsibly. One exemplary application is briefly discussed to illustrate how the heuristic logic can be applied beyond its original context. Positioned within Network 06 (Open Learning: Media, Environments and Cultures), the paper contributes to European debates on digital inclusion, professionalisation in adult education, and the responsible use of emerging technologies. By framing the orientation framework as a boundary object between research, practice, and policy, it offers a theoretically grounded yet practice-oriented approach to supporting educators in moving from access to meaningful digital participation in adult basic education. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This paper draws on empirical and conceptual work conducted within a multi-year research project on digital media use in adult basic education, which investigated conditions for the meaningful and inclusive integration of digital tools in courses for adults with low literacy. The project followed a convergent mixed-methods design (Creswell, 2022), combining qualitative and quantitative data to capture perspectives at institutional, pedagogical, and learner levels. A central methodological component informing this paper is the use of heuristic evaluation to analyse digital learning programmes and everyday digital tools. Heuristic evaluation is an established usability inspection method in which a small number of experts systematically assess digital applications using predefined criteria. In the context of adult basic education, these heuristics were specifically adapted to address the needs and learning conditions of adults with low literacy (Koppel, 2017). The evaluation process was conducted in two iterative phases. In the first phase, experts analysed the overall structure, navigation, and information flow of selected digital applications. In the second phase, specific interface elements, interaction patterns, and feedback mechanisms were examined in greater detail. Identified usability issues were documented and discussed with regard to their pedagogical relevance and their potential impact on learner engagement and participation. The resulting heuristic criteria include dimensions such as learnability, self-descriptiveness, perceptual guidance, task appropriateness, controllability, joy of use, and intercultural sensitivity. These criteria formed the basis for the development of the orientation framework presented in this paper. Importantly, the framework is not positioned as a prescriptive evaluation instrument, but as a reflective tool that supports educators’ professional judgement in selecting and using digital tools in open learning environments (Koppel & Langer, 2020), and that can be extended to emerging AI-supported applications. As the empirical data collection and heuristic evaluations were conducted prior to the widespread availability of generative AI tools, AI-based applications were not included in the empirical analysis. Reflections on AI-supported tools therefore draw on professional discourse in adult basic education and are included as a forward-looking perspective rather than as an empirically evaluated component. Although the empirical analyses focused on German-language applications, the methodological logic of the framework is not language- or country-specific. The heuristic structure enables educators in different European contexts to apply the framework to locally relevant digital or AI-based tools, thereby supporting context-sensitive and comparative pedagogical reflection in adult basic education. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This paper contributes to European debates on digital inclusion in adult basic education by presenting an orientation framework that supports educators in moving beyond access towards meaningful and responsible use of digital tools. Building on the Digital Inclusion Pathway (Reder, 2015), the framework foregrounds motivation, usability, and relevance for learners’ everyday lives as central conditions for participation, particularly for adults with low literacy who are disproportionately affected by digital exclusion (Grotlüschen et al., 2020). A key contribution of the framework lies in its positioning as a reflective analytical instrument rather than a prescriptive evaluation tool. By operationalising dimensions such as learnability, self-descriptiveness, task appropriateness, controllability, joy of use, and intercultural sensitivity, the framework supports educators’ professional judgement in heterogeneous and open learning environments. It enables practitioners to reflect on whether and how specific digital tools align with learners’ interests, experiences, and levels of readiness, thereby fostering engagement and reducing the risk of exclusion. From a European perspective, the framework addresses challenges widely shared across adult education systems, including uneven digital participation, limited instructional resources, and growing expectations to integrate digital technologies in pedagogically sound and socially inclusive ways (European Commission, 2020; Cedefop, 2020). Although the empirical work informing the framework was conducted in a specific national context, the underlying heuristic logic and conceptual assumptions are transferable and adaptable across diverse linguistic and institutional settings in Europe. With regard to current developments in artificial intelligence, the framework offers structured orientation for critically engaging with emerging applications in adult basic education. Rather than promoting uncritical adoption, it supports educators in assessing potential implications for learner autonomy, accessibility, and meaningful participation. Overall, the paper argues that such orientation frameworks can contribute to professional development, curriculum design, and policy discussions, supporting more equitable and context-sensitive approaches to digital participation in adult basic education. Paper Seeing, Knowing, Acting: Visual and Participatory Pedagogies as Counter-Epistemologies to AI-Driven Educational Knowledge in Times of Poly-Crisis European University Cyprus, Greece Presenting Author:As datafication, algorithmic governance and AI-driven tools increasingly shape what counts as educational knowledge, educational research faces profound epistemic challenges. While digital technologies promise efficiency and enhanced access to information, they also risk narrowing educational epistemologies, privileging abstraction, prediction and quantification over relational, affective and socio-material forms of knowing (Selwyn, 2019). In this paper, I argue that visual and participatory pedagogies constitute vital counter-epistemologies in this context. By grounding knowledge in embodied perception, attentiveness and interpretive dialogue, such approaches resist the disembodiment characteristic of AI-mediated knowledge production and re-anchor educational inquiry in lived experience. My argument draws on a participatory visual pilot study conducted with MA students at the European University Cyprus. As part of a course on Sociocultural Issues in Education, I designed an assignment asking students to photograph the “architecture of disability” in their everyday surroundings while adopting the perspective of a person with a disability. This task required learners to leave the classroom, move through public spaces and document how accessibility—or exclusion—is materially encoded in ordinary infrastructures. Photography here functioned as embodied inquiry: it slowed down perception, activated emotional and ethical responses, and cultivated forms of noticing that are rarely elicited in screen-based learning environments (Rose, 2016; Pink, 2013; Banks, 2007; Harper, 2002). Students’ photographs illuminated missing ramps, narrow corridors, broken elevators and uneven sidewalks, mundane elements that reveal the normative assumptions embedded in built environments. Yet the most significant outcome was the shift in students’ perception and ethical orientation. Many described discomfort, empathy, or even a sense of responsibility as they attempted to inhabit an unfamiliar embodied perspective. These affective and perceptual shifts align with disability studies insights into the politics of visibility and normativity (Garland-Thomson, 1997; Mitchell & Snyder, 2000; Siebers, 2008; Garland-Thomson, 2005). In subsequent classroom dialogues, students collectively interpreted the visual material, debating their meanings and tracing the structural roots of exclusion. This dialogic dimension aligns closely with principles of critical pedagogy (Freire, 1970; hooks, 1994), which emphasise shared inquiry, critical reflection and the co-production of knowledge. The visual artefacts democratized classroom participation, enabling students who felt less confident with theoretical discourse to contribute meaningfully through multimodal expression. The process positioned learners as co-investigators, challenging hierarchical knowledge relations embedded both in classroom settings and in broader AI-driven knowledge systems. I argue that visual and participatory pedagogies challenge AI-driven epistemologies in three key ways. First, they restore embodiment to knowledge production, recognising that perception and movement shape understanding in ways algorithms cannot replicate. Second, they reassert situated knowing by grounding inquiry in socio-material contexts rather than decontextualized datasets. Third, they cultivate ethical and political imagination by helping learners perceive not only what exists but also what could and should exist. Situated within broader debates on educational knowledge production in times of poly-crisis, this paper positions visual pedagogy as an ethical and political commitment. As AI threatens to further abstract educational research from lived realities, visual and participatory methodologies help safeguard democratic, relational and human forms of knowing. Ultimately, I argue that these approaches offer powerful resources for cultivating forms of seeing, knowing and acting that are essential for responding to the complex challenges facing contemporary education. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study adopts a visual participatory methodology informed by visual sociology, critical pedagogy and disability studies. My methodological choices reflect a commitment to forms of knowledge grounded in embodiment, relationality and socio-material engagement—dimensions often obscured by the abstraction and standardisation of AI-driven epistemic systems (Selwyn, 2019). The empirical foundation of the study lies in a pilot assignment implemented in an MA course at the European University Cyprus. Students were asked to photograph examples of the “architecture of disability” in their everyday environments. They selected a type of disability—mobility, visual or hearing impairment—and then navigated public spaces such as streets, schools and transport systems, documenting how accessible these environments would be for a person with that disability. Photography served as a tool of embodied inquiry, consistent with visual ethnographic principles that emphasize perception, affect and interpretive engagement (Pink, 2013; Banks, 2007; Harper, 2002). Data collection involved: (1) a corpus of approximately 60 photographs; (2) 33 written reflective commentaries; (3) three recorded classroom dialogues. I treated these materials as co-produced artefacts of learning rather than neutral data, consistent with interpretive approaches in visual sociology (Rose, 2016). The analysis unfolded in three stages. First, I conducted a visual compositional analysis, attending to framing, perspective, symbolism and the politics of visibility (Garland-Thomson, 1997; Garland-Thomson, 2005). Second, I analysed the written reflections through a phenomenological lens, tracing expressions of discomfort, empathy and ethical tension. Third, I examined classroom dialogues using dialogic discourse analysis to explore how students negotiated meaning collectively, aligning with critical pedagogy’s emphasis on shared inquiry (Freire, 1970; hooks, 1994). Ethical considerations were central to the design. Students were instructed to avoid photographing identifiable individuals and encouraged to reflect on their positionality and potential risks of reproducing stereotypes. Recognizing the pedagogical significance of discomfort, I facilitated reflective conversations about emotions, assumptions and representational ethics (Siebers, 2008). This methodological approach enacts the epistemic argument of the study: that knowledge emerges not only from cognition but from embodied presence, perception and relational engagement. Visual participatory inquiry serves as a counter-epistemology to AI-driven modes of knowing by foregrounding interpretation, context and human experience. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The findings of this study demonstrate that visual and participatory pedagogies cultivate epistemic capacities that are increasingly essential in an era shaped by AI, datafication and social fragmentation. The embodied act of photographing accessibility and exclusion activated sensory, emotional and ethical dimensions of learning that are rarely elicited by digital platforms or algorithmic systems. Students experienced moments of noticing, empathy, discomfort and ethical responsibility, responses consistent with theories of visual attention and disability studies (Mitchell & Snyder, 2000; Siebers, 2008). Visual pedagogy fostered what I describe as critical presence: an attunement to socio-material realities and injustices that is foundational to democratic life. Students came to see barriers not as isolated design flaws but as manifestations of deeper structural inequalities, echoing disability studies insights into the politics of normativity and appearance (Garland-Thomson, 1997; Garland-Thomson, 2005). This movement from seeing to knowing to imagining acting aligns with the transformative aims of critical pedagogy (Freire, 1970; hooks, 1994). Furthermore, the participatory structure of the assignment democratized knowledge production. The inclusion of multimodal expression enabled diverse learners to contribute meaningfully, countering hierarchical models of expertise reinforced by AI-driven systems that privilege particular modalities of knowledge (Selwyn, 2019). Classroom dialogues revealed collaborative meaning-making processes that foregrounded relationality, interpretation and collective responsibility. In the context of poly-crisis—where education must confront ecological uncertainty, political polarization and social injustice—such epistemic practices are indispensable. Visual participatory methodologies offer not only innovative pedagogical tools but also ethical and political resources for sustaining democratic imaginaries and forms of solidarity. Ultimately, I argue that visual pedagogies constitute a necessary counter-epistemology: a commitment to knowledge grounded in embodiment, lived experience and collective interpretation.
