Paper From Narratives of Well-Being to an Ecology of Flourishing: Students' Voices for the Future of Higher Education Università degli Studi di Padova, Italy Presenting Author:In recent years, well-being has become a central reference within educational discourse, particularly in relation to higher education (Fang, Ren, & Sotardi, 2025). This growing prominence does not arise in isolation. It is embedded in a broader post-postmodern condition in which universities are increasingly shaped by acceleration, performative accountability, and competitive logics that profoundly influence how educational experience is lived and interpreted (Donovan, 2013; Rosa, 2019; Biesta, 2021). Within these configurations, academic pathways are frequently reorganised around standardised trajectories and grammars of success, privileging visibility and efficiency over continuity and meaning (Barnett, 2011; Marginson, 2011). Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used A qualitative-driven convergent design (Morse & Niehaus, 2009), situated within an interpretivist paradigm (Guba & Lincoln, 1994), frames the methodological architecture of this work. This choice reflects the assumption that human flourishing in higher education cannot be apprehended through a single epistemic lens, but requires attention to how experiences, aspirations, and meanings are narrated and held in relation. This stance is grounded in the integration of Narrative Inquiry (Clandinin & Connelly, 2000) and Appreciative Inquiry (Cooperrider & Whitney, 2005). Narrative Inquiry enables close engagement with lived experience, approaching stories as situated and relational forms of knowing, while Appreciative Inquiry introduces a generative orientation toward possibilities, aspirations, and shared futures. Held together, these approaches sustain a methodological positioning in which understanding and transformation remain in productive tension. The research was conducted at the University of Padua between 2023 and 2025 and involved students enrolled in two master’s degree programmes. Participation was voluntary and varied across phases; engagement is therefore understood as phase-specific rather than cumulative. The inquiry unfolded through the four phases, or 4D’s cycle, of Appreciative Inquiry. Discovery mapped students’ lived experiences and languages of well-being, flourishing, and self-narration through an exploratory semi-structured questionnaire. Dream shifted the focus from description to imagination, inviting students—via an asynchronous online forum—to articulate metaphors and visions of a flourishing university. Design took shape through WONDER (Ways Of Narrating Desirable Educational Routes), a narrative–pedagogical pathway oriented toward the co-construction of collective Flourishing Manifestos through shared storytelling and creative practices. Finally, Destiny involved a small group of volunteer students in a reflective re-reading and connective interpretation of these materials, culminating in a Manifesto for the Future conceived as a dialogic act of restitution addressed to the wider university community. Data analysis unfolded through differentiated yet interconnected procedures. Closed questionnaire items were examined using descriptive and inferential analyses, while open-ended responses were interpreted through Structured Tabular Thematic Analysis (Robinson, 2022). Narrative contributions were explored through Reflexive Thematic Analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006, 2021), supported by ATLAS.ti, alongside integrated visual–textual readings of creative artefacts. Throughout the analytic process, convergences, complementarities, and divergences were treated not as inconsistencies to be resolved, but as analytically meaningful differences. In line with a postdigital and post-human sensibility (Barad, 2007; Lather & St. Pierre, 2013), narratives, creative artefacts, and questionnaire responses were read as entangled material–discursive practices through which meanings of flourishing emerged in and through their interrelations. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The findings invite a reconceptualization of well-being within higher education by situating it in a broader ecology of flourishing. Rather than discarding well-being as a relevant construct, the study shows how students live it as inseparable from relational, spatial, temporal, and institutional conditions. A central empirical result concerns relational recognition as the condition through which well-being becomes inhabitable and flourishing conceivable. Across narratives, creative artefacts, and survey patterns, experiences of safety, being listened to, appreciation beyond merit, and opportunities for contribution consistently converge. Together, these elements form a recognitive configuration that mediates between institutional arrangements and lived experience, shaping whether students can remain present, participate meaningfully, and sustain engagement over time (Edmondson, 1999; Cook-Sather, 2020; Biesta, 2021). Students’ accounts further indicate that flourishing is cultivated through ordinary educational infrastructures: spaces that allow lingering rather than constant passage, and temporal rhythms that protect dialogue and reflection, sustaining continuity of meaning (Mallan, 2019; Lee et al., 2020; Lomas et al., 2025). Students’ aspirations consolidate this ecological picture. What is imagined as desirable consistently mirrors what has already been experienced as enabling, though fragile: supportive relationships, accessible spaces, protected time, and opportunities for participation. Aspirations thus function as evaluative orientations through which students identify what deserves to endure, be stabilised, and become more equitable within university life (Gale & Parker, 2015; Hart, 2016). Narration emerges as a pivotal practice through which these aspirations become intelligible and collectively negotiable. Through self- and collective narration, experience is rendered open to re-imagination, enabling forms of co-agency and shared responsibility (Bruner, 1990; Nussbaum, 2011; Foote, 2015). Within this frame, WONDER is proposed as a transferable methodological contribution for international research in higher education, providing a generative point of reference for comparative and context-sensitive inquiries into flourishing across diverse university systems. Paper Students' Intentions to Drop Out from University: Findings from a Student Panel Survey with a Special Focus on Gender Issues (2022-23) Vienna University of Economics and Business, Austria Presenting Author:This paper examines empirical evidence from higher education research on student dropout intentions. Dropping out from university is associated with high individual and societal costs, a lack of innovation, a shortage of skilled workers, and a loss of competitiveness and diversity (Burk/Hetze 2023; Heublein et al. 2022; Bellmann/Leber 2019; Nairz-Wirth/Feldmann 2018). In addition, one of the European Union's goals is to achieve greater equality of educational opportunity – a goal that depends in part on reducing the number of students who drop out from university (Potapova 2025; Vossensteyn et al. 2015). With European universities already reporting high dropout rates within their specific systems (DAAD 2021, Vossensteyn et al. 2015), universities are under increasing pressure to implement measures to prevent student attrition. In this context, dropout intentions can be regarded as an early warning indicator, thus making it a relevant factor in empirical research and the design of effective prevention and intervention strategies (Deuer/Wild 2018). Within the Austrian context, the average rate of attrition among bachelor’s students is approximately 30% (with respect to bachelor’s programs commencing at public universities during the winter semester 2016/17). It is important to note that most of the students dropping out from university appear to do so during the first two semesters of study (approximately 20%) (Haag et al. 2025). Consequently, it is evident that the transition to higher education represents a critical period for students, and a challenge for the development of their academic habitus. Addressing the issue at early stages, transition management and the strengthening of students’ resilience resources as part of their habitus development are crucial for their future academic and professional success (Frisby et al. 2020; Lane 2020). Moreover, the development of resilience resources and academic success is favoured by the existence and utilization of social networks at the university (social capital). The development of these networks during the transition to higher education poses another significant challenge for students (Berndt/Felix 2020; Hofmann et al. 2020). These influencing factors – including habitus development, resilience resources and building social networks – have been deeply challenged during the COVID-19 pandemic (e.g., distance learning, social isolation), which has increased their relevance in the context of higher education research on student attrition in recent years. Recent studies on academic success rates at Austrian public universities indicate that male and female students perform nearly equally (Haag et al. 2025). However, additional research has revealed that women tend to withdraw from their studies more rapidly than men, should they choose to drop out (Thaler et al. 2021). Thaler et al. (2021) further assert that the observed gender differences in dropout rates are not inherently attribute to gender itself, but rather to underlying factors that in turn are influenced by gender, such as school choice. Despite the extensive body of literature addressing university dropout, the prior intention to withdraw from university has been less comprehensively examined by higher education research. While the effects of transition management, resilience, social networks and gender on university dropout have been explored separately, a combined analysis from a longitudinal perspective is also rare. The research questions addressed in this paper are as follows: (1) How do transitional experiences, resilience, and social networks within the university environment affect the dropout intentions of bachelor's students, with a special focus on gender issues, over time? (2) What possible guidelines for prevention strategies can be derived from this analysis to address the issue of university dropout as early as possible? Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The present analysis integrates psychological-individual and sociological-institutional approaches (Heublein/Wolter 2011), to examine the role and interplay of transition management experiences, resilience, and social networks (in terms of peers, university staff, and study groups) in relation to dropout intentions over time. Additionally, a special focus on gender differences is considered within the analysis. A two-year panel survey (2022-2023) was conducted among all bachelor’s students in economics and social sciences at an Austrian public university. In 2022, students were contacted via mail, resulting in an initial participation of 1,502 students, of whom 1,000 completed the questionnaire, thereby providing a robust dataset for analysis (n = 1,000). In a subsequent round, these students were invited to re-participate in the survey in 2023. The survey results were then analysed using various regression models for panel analysis, including pooled and random effects models, to identify significant effects over time. Furthermore, to gain deeper insights into gender-based experiences, participants’ open-ended statements regarding their current study situation were analyzed for this paper. A total of 853 statements from students across both survey waves (2022-23) were coded and categorised using qualitative content analysis (Mayring/Fenzl, 2019). In this context, research in higher education that effectively combines quantitative and qualitative data over time remains relatively rare. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The findings derived from various panel models indicate that strong social networks (in relation to other peers), resilience, and smooth transition to university have a preventive effect on the intention to drop out. Notably, female students tend to perceive their interactions with lecturers and other university staff differently than their male counterparts, particularly concerning their intentions to withdraw from their studies. Further analyses reveal that women not only cite feelings of loneliness significantly more often as a reason for their intentions of withdrawal, but they also express greater frustration with the institution – considering distance learning – in their answers. Additionally, results from the qualitative content analysis demonstrate that female and male students evaluate loneliness and its underlying causes in distinct ways. While male students assert that they “prefer studying on their own anyway”, female students articulate complaints regarding the university environment and in their academic experiences, highlighting the challenges they face in forming social connections at university. Building on previous findings in higher education research, the results of the present study suggest that early preparation for studying, proactive management of the transition process by the institutions, support for the development of students' resilience, and the promotion of social networks that address gender-specific needs can prevent dropout intentions and contribute to reducing dropout rates among university students in the long run. These findings are of particular relevance to researchers and higher education policymakers aiming to implement early-stage prevention strategies to address university dropout rates. Paper University Teachers’ Perceptions of Departmental Culture: A Cross-National Study of China and Sweden 1: University of Turku, Finland; 2: Umeå University Presenting Author:Departmental culture is a central aspect of teachers’ working environment in higher education, shaping teachers’ professional development as well as teaching and learning practices. Despite its importance, how departmental culture is perceived across different national contexts remains underexplored. China and Sweden represent higher education systems with distinct institutional arrangements and approaches to teacher professional development, which are likely to shape how departmental cultures are experienced by university teachers. Against this background, this study examines university teachers’ perceptions of departmental culture in China and Sweden and explores how teachers' perceptions differ across professional backgrounds and professional development practices. The study is theoretically informed by Hargreaves’ (1994) school culture model and its extension to higher education by Tynjälä and Kálmán’s (2019, 2020). Within this framework, departmental culture is conceptualized as a multidimensional construct encompassing: (1) culture of departmental support of teaching, referring to the extent to which teaching is valued and supported within departments; (2) training- and project-centered professional culture, capturing departments’ use of formal and organized approaches to teaching development; and (3) culture of voluntary collegial collaboration, reflecting informal and voluntary interactions among colleagues around teaching and professional development. Guided by this framework, the study addresses the following research questions: 1. How do university teachers in China and Sweden perceive departmental culture? 2. How do teachers’ perceptions of departmental culture differ across professional backgrounds and professional development practices? In this study, professional practices are understood as teachers’ engagement in pedagogical studies and professional development activities related to teaching, while professional background includes disciplinary affiliation and teaching experience. By examining teachers’ perceptions within two national higher education systems, this study contributes to an international perspective on departmental culture in higher education, highlighting cross-national differences as well as differences associated with teachers’ professional backgrounds and professional development practices. The findings are expected to inform ongoing European and international discussions on academic work environments and teacher professional development in universities. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study employed two validated instruments developed by Kálmán et al. (2020): the Inventory of Perceptions of Departmental Culture (IPDC) and the Inventory of Professional Development Activities (IPDA). The IPDC measures university teachers’ perceptions of departmental culture, while the IPDA captures teachers’ engagement in professional development activities related to teaching.The IPDC served as the primary instrument and its items were rated on a five-point Likert scale (1 = completely disagree to 5 = completely agree), while IPDA items assessed the frequency of participation in professional development activities on a five-point scale (1 = never to 5 = always). To examine whether a comparable factor structure of two instruments could be identified across national contexts, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted separately for the Chinese and Swedish samples. Based on the EFA results, the modified IPDC comprised three factors: culture of departmental support of teaching, training- and project-centered professional culture, and culture of voluntary collegial collaboration. The modified IPDA included two factors: research-focused professional development activities and sharing teaching practices with colleagues. Following EFA, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed separately in the Chinese and Swedish samples to validate the factor structure of the IPDC. Where theoretically justified, residual correlations were added based on modification indices. After acceptable model fit was established, multigroup confirmatory factor analysis (MGCFA) was conducted to test measurement invariance across the two countries. Configural, metric, and scalar invariance models were examined. When full scalar invariance was not supported, selected item intercepts were freely estimated to achieve partial scalar invariance, which provided the basis for subsequent latent mean comparisons. To examine whether teachers’ perceptions of departmental culture were associated with professional backgrounds and professional development practices beyond national context, separate hierarchical regression analyses were conducted for each of the three departmental culture dimensions. Factor scores derived from the final partial scalar invariance model were used as dependent variables. Country, professional background variables (discipline and teaching experience), and professional development practices were entered stepwise as predictors. Interaction terms involving country were examined to assess whether associations differed by national context. Given substantial differences in the distribution of pedagogical study amount between China and Sweden, within-country hierarchical regression analyses were conducted using country-specific categorizations of pedagogical study amount. In addition, pairwise comparisons of adjusted means were conducted using general linear models to further examine group differences. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The results revealed significant national differences in teachers’ perceptions of departmental culture. Specifically, Swedish teachers reported higher levels of training- and project-centered professional culture and voluntary collegial collaboration than their Chinese counterparts. These findings suggest that national context plays an important role in shaping how departmental culture is experienced by university teachers. Across countries, professional development practices emerged as the most consistent correlates of departmental culture. In particular, sharing teaching practices with colleagues was positively associated with all dimensions of departmental culture, highlighting the importance of everyday professional interaction in fostering supportive and collaborative departmental environments. The role of pedagogical study amount, however, showed different patterns across the two countries. In China, engagement in pedagogical studies was associated with training- and project-centered and voluntary collegial collaboration culture, whereas in Sweden, higher levels of pedagogical study were more strongly linked to departmental support for teaching and training- and project-centered professional culture. This pattern suggests that the role of pedagogical study in shaping departmental culture varies across national higher education contexts. By contrast, professional backgrounds such as discipline, showed weaker association and more context-dependent associations with departmental culture, while teaching experience was not significantly related to any cultural dimension. Overall, the findings indicate that departmental culture is shaped less by stable background characteristics and more by broader national context and teachers’ active engagement in professional development. In contrast to evidence-informed educational practices that primarily draw upon existing theories and preliminary research results, evidence-based practice necessitates practitioners to incorporate evidence throughout all stages of their professional practices to enhance the validation of instructional interventions (Owen et al., 2022). Within teacher education, different forms and scopes of evidence-based enquiry activities have been employed across the globe to enhance instructional quality. These emphasise the significance of teachers leveraging evidence from multiple sources (e.g., empirical research findings, policy documents, and contextual data) to inform their educational decision-making processes (Cochran-Smith & Lytle, 1990, 2011). Despite the theoretical and methodological advancements of evidence-based enquiry, significant challenges persist in teachers’ implementation. One widespread tension is that teachers may perceive enquiry being situated in formal projects or grants that are separated and disconnected from their everyday practice (Berger et al., 2005). Moreover, teachers’ current evidence-based practices primarily rely on established theories, prior research results, guidance from external experts, and summative student assessment data, with limited attention to students’ thinking processes (e.g., Kretlow & Helf, 2013; Zembal-Saul et al., 2002). Nevertheless, evidence generated by students in real-time interactions is often undervalued, hindering the effectiveness of teacher reflection and the development of their “knowing-to” (Mason & Spence, 1999) required for in-the-moment responsive instruction. Another significant challenge is teachers’ confusion when interpreting and negotiating various sources of evidence that emerge in classrooms, such as curriculum requirements, pedagogical principles, and students’ diverse behaviours and engagement patterns that occur simultaneously (Altinyelken, 2011). These challenges hinder the full realisation of teachers’ evidence-based enquiry initiatives, necessitating significant attention to how teachers can more effectively leverage various sources of evidence to incorporate student thinking into their evidence-based practices. Therefore, this study aims to characterise how teachers engage in evidence-based enquiry through a student-focused professional learning programme. Specifically, it examines how teachers leverage diverse sources of evidence to investigate student thinking within their instructional practices. The research objective can be unpacked into two questions: i) What constitutes the evidence that teachers leverage when investigating student thinking during enquiry? ii) How do teachers leverage diverse sources of evidence to inform their instructional practice? This study employs cultural-historical activity theory (CHAT) as its analytical perspective. Building on Leontiev’s notion of “activity” that involves both materialistic processes as external activities and mental processes as internal activities (Leontiev, as cited in Cong-Lem, 2022), Engeström and Sannino (2021) conceptualise activity system as a dynamic network comprising six interconnected components: subject, object, artefacts, community, rules, and division of labour (Cong-Lem, 2022; Engeström & Sannino, 2010, 2021). This study specifically centres on the role of “artefacts” and their dynamic interplay with the subject, object, and community across different stages in teachers’ research processes. Artefacts are operationalised as the evidence that teachers leverage during their enquiry into student thinking. For instance, during the planning stage, these involve established theories, prior research results, and curricula that teachers employ to develop their research plans. During the data analysis stage, artefacts involve the empirical evidence that teachers collected during implementation for their analysis and reflection. By examining the various sources of evidence, this study aims to uncover how teachers leverage evidence to investigate student thinking within their instructional practices. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study was conducted in the research site of a professional learning programme implemented in China designed to support teachers in learning about and conducting task-based clinical interviews (Confrey, 1990) with students. The programme was collaboratively organised by a group of university-based researchers and involved 15 high school mathematics teachers as participants. The main activities involved lectures, workshops, hands-on individual practice and group discussions, through which the teachers were supported in designing and implementing task-based clinical interviews with students. Throughout these activities, the teachers were supported to identify and reconstruct pedagogical problems, develop interview tasks and protocols, implement interviews with students, collect relevant data, and analyse students’ mathematical thinking to inform their future instructional practices. Six teachers were selected through purposive sampling (Denzin et al., 2023) as the research participants based on their active engagement in the programme and willingness. The selection criteria included: (i) completion of the entire enquiry process; (ii) attendance at the majority of key programme sessions; (c) consent to be involved, observed and recorded throughout their enquiry process. The research data were collected throughout the programme from multiple sources. All programme sessions were video- and audio-recorded to capture teachers’ activities both within the programme site and their interactions with students during the implementation of interviews. Upon completion of the programme, one-on-one semi-structured interviews were conducted with each teacher participant and university-based researcher, each lasting for around one hour. Teacher interviews focused on eliciting insights into their experiences of conducting evidence-based enquiry and their evolving understanding of student thinking. Concurrently, interviews with university-based researchers explored their perspectives on teachers’ evidence-based enquiry practices. All documents associated with teachers’ enquiry processes, including task design, interview protocols, presentation slides and student work, were collected. To characterise how teachers engage in evidence-based enquiry to investigate student thinking, thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006) was employed to identify a comprehensive suite of themes representing the evidence leveraged by teachers. The analysis started with familiarisation with the dataset through a holistic review and the generation of memos and analytical notes (Yin, 2013). Then the data went through iterative rounds of coding to systematically label relevant segments and shape categories and subcategories to identify emergent patterns of and interconnections among different codes. By specifying the various sources of evidence and ways that teachers leverage, these results provide insights for understanding how teachers bridge evidence-based enquiry with instructional decision-making. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The analysis revealed the teachers leveraged evidence from three primary sources to inform their enquiry into student thinking: theories, curricula, and real-time student-generated cues. Some teachers operationalised educational theories, such as constructivism, behaviourism, and social learning, as frameworks to inform their task design, protocol development and data analysis. They regarded theories as specialised evidence that offer insights into how students think and learn, what motivates student thinking, and how to facilitate students’ engagement and meaning-making in classrooms. Another vital source of evidence was the curricula, such as extension tasks in nationally standardised textbooks and school-based curriculum exercises. Curricula inspired teachers’ task design, specifically the task scenarios, the sequence of learning activities, and expected learning outcomes. By utilising curriculum frameworks, teachers drew upon a systematically organised body of pedagogical principles developed to promote students’ effective learning. The utilisation of curricula as evidence ensured that teachers’ enquiries into student thinking were well grounded in established educational frameworks and aligned with external guidelines. The most immediate source of evidence was real-time student-generated cues, including students’ expressions and actions. During the implementation of interviews with students and data analysis, teachers engaged in careful observations of students’ verbal responses, body language, and behaviours to gain nuanced insights into students’ cognitive and emotional processes. For instance, students’ active participation, thoughtful questions, and articulate explanations may indicate their comprehension and genuine interest, while signs of confusion, disengagement, or frustration, such as lack of eye contact and withdrawal offered potential cues that students needed additional support or alternative instructional approaches. While each source of evidence offers unique insights, their triangulation creates a robust framework for teachers’ enquiry into student thinking. The integration of theories, curricula, and student cues allows teachers to move beyond a single perspective, facilitating their more responsive, personalised, and effective instructional decision-making.
