Long Paper An Ontological Turn in Teacher Education: Being and Becoming with Generative AI University of South-Eastern Norway, Norway Presenting Author:Teacher education has traditionally conceptualised digital technology through three dominant perspectives: a skills and competencesperspective (Kereluik et al., 2013; Starkey, 2020), a pedagogical perspective focused on integration and instructional design (Mishra & Koehler, 2006; Redecker & Punie, 2017), and a societal/humanistic perspective addressing citizenship, ethics and participation (Castells, 1996/2000; Janssen et al., 2013). These perspectives have been accompanied by an epistemological undercurrent, emphasising how digitalisation reshapes knowledge practices and the conditions for inquiry, literacy and verification (Lankshear, 2003; Lund & Aagaard, 2020). While these orientations remain important, the rapid emergence of generative AI (GenAI) has surfaced dilemmas that are difficult to grasp within these frameworks alone. GenAI challenges established assumptions about authorship, originality, judgement and professional responsibility, particularly when systems can mimic human expression in text, voice and imagery (Giannakos et al., 2024; Matusov et al., 2024; Nasiri & Hashemzadeh, 2025). Furthermore, the increasing automation of planning, feedback and assessment places pressure on teachers’ professional ontology, that is, on what it means to be a teacher when machine‑generated outputs become intertwined with core pedagogical activities (Bewersdorff et al., 2023; Martínez-Comesana et al., 2023). To address these developments, this paper proposes an ontological turn in the way digital technology is understood in teacher education. Ontology is here understood not in its computational sense, but as questions of being and becoming: how teachers and students form themselves through participation in cultural‑material practices, including hybrid human–machine activity (Dall’Alba & Barnacle, 2007; Packer & Goicoechea, 2000). Such an ontological perspective has been suggested in both higher education research (Barnett, 2009) and recent work on digitalisation (Arstorp & Lund, 2025). The paper proceeds in three steps. First, it revisits the limitations of the dominant perspectives in light of GenAI, arguing that they primarily address what people do with technology, rather than who they are becoming within technology‑mediated practices. Second, it examines four ontological pressure points revealed by GenAI:
Third, the contribution discusses how an ontological turn opens new possibilities for teacher education practice, including process‑based assessment of judgement (Quellmalz et al., 2012), authorship statements, formative dialogue for orientation, and pedagogical designs that surface hybrid forms of agency (Venigandla et al., 2024). The paper does not introduce a new framework; rather, it aims to show what becomes visible when being and becoming are taken seriously in discussions of GenAI. The proposed ontological turn resonates with ongoing European debates on digital competence frameworks such as DigCompEdu (Redecker & Punie, 2017) and contributes to a broader philosophical conversation about education in an era of hybrid human–machine practices. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This contribution adopts a conceptual and theoretical methodology within the tradition of philosophy of education, drawing on research in sociocultural theory, anthropology, and studies of digital epistemology. The method consists of three components. First, the paper uses conceptual analysis to examine how the dominant perspectives on digital technology organise discourse in teacher education. This involves engaging with epistemological accounts of digitalisation (Ingvarsson, 2021; Lankshear, 2003) and ontological perspectives on learning and professional becoming (Dall’Alba & Barnacle, 2007; Packer & Goicoechea, 2000). Second, the paper incorporates analytical examples drawn from recent empirical studies of GenAI. These examples illustrate the ontological pressure points, including dilemmas involving deepfake driven erosion of uniqueness (Nasiri & Hashemzadeh, 2025), GenAI as a dialogic or epistemic partner (Matusov et al., 2024), challenges related to AI mediated assessment (Bewersdorff et al., 2023; Hsiao et al., 2023), and the automation of teacher tasks in planning and evaluation (Martínez-Comesana et al., 2023). Third, the methodology includes a dialogue with existing European competence frameworks such as DigCompEdu (Redecker & Punie, 2017) and national professional digital competence models (Kelentrić et al., 2017, 2024), identifying where ontological questions remain underarticulated. This strengthens the relevance of the paper to European policy debates. The approach is thus philosophical, analytic and literature based, making it suitable for EERA Network 13. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The paper contributes with three main insights. First, it demonstrates that while the skills, pedagogical and societal perspectives remain necessary, they insufficiently address dilemmas that involve identity, agency, responsibility and professional being. GenAI highlights these limitations when it reproduces human expression, collaborates in writing, and automates evaluative judgements (Bewersdorff et al., 2023; Nasiri & Hashemzadeh, 2025; Aagaard & Lund, 2020). Second, by conceptualising GenAI related tensions as ontological pressure points, the paper shows that many contemporary challenges in teacher education are not merely technical or ethical but concern processes of becoming. This includes disorientation under accelerated textual production (Ingvarsson, 2021) and changing criteria for what counts as professional judgement (Sandberg & Pinnington, 2009). Third, the paper argues that an ontological turn offers a richer foundation for teacher education. It supports pedagogical approaches that foreground students’ reasoning, sense making, authorship and hybrid agency, informed by dynamic and process based assessment practices (Quellmalz et al., 2012) and emerging work on human–AI collaboration (Venigandla et al., 2024). Overall, the expected outcome is a conceptual reframing of digitalisation in teacher education, one that strengthens professional formation in increasingly hybrid human–machine environments. Long Paper Urgency and the Grammar of Education: Deleuzian Real Problem-Production Illustrated Through the Discourse of Neurocognitive Risk Polish Naval Academy, Poland Presenting Author:Abstract The main line of argument engages with contemporary educational temporalities by conceptualising urgency as a constitutive temporal logic that intervenes at the level of educational problem-production. In dialogue with Deleuze’s concept of the real problem, urgency is presented here as a problem-posing condition – a temporal operator that preconfigures the problematic field in which “educational problems” become thinkable, contestable, and actionable. Urgency thus operates as a temporal technology of educational problematisation that reshapes the conditions under which education becomes intelligible. Urgency is shown to operate at the intersection of three interrelated orders: transformations in the experience and organisation of time; modes of governing through anticipation, prevention, and immunisation (Foucault, Agamben, Esposito); and processes of subjectification that position subjects simultaneously as vulnerable, at risk, and responsible. Rather than producing linear or determinate effects, urgency functions through superimposition and overdetermination, intensifying orientations toward prevention, anticipation, and optimisation while narrowing the space of educational indeterminacy and displacing educational responsibility. This conceptual framework is illustrated through a brief analysis of contemporary discourses of neurocognitive risk in education. Such discourses do not merely describe cognitive challenges but actively participate in producing an ontology of education as preventive intervention and a grammar of education structured by urgency. Crucially, urgency plays an asymmetrical role in this configuration: it does not simply accompany neurocognitive risk discourse but organizes the temporal conditions under which neurocognitive vulnerability can appear as a real educational problem requiring anticipatory action. In conclusion, urgency emerges not merely as a driver of accelerated action, but as a force that transforms the ontological background through which educational problems are posed as real, and ethical responsibility is reconfigured. Education is thus approached not as a domain to which urgency is applied, but as a field whose grammar is reconstituted through urgent modes of problematisation. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used I. Urgency I would argue that the temporal logic of urgency provides a condition of possibility for subsequent transformations in the grammar of education, understood as the ontological layer that structures educational intelligibility and underpins the posing of educational problems (in Deleuze’s sense, as real problems). Urgency is therefore not conceptualised here as a reaction to external threats, nor merely as a prompt to act efficiently and without delay, but as a constitutive operator that organizes how educational problems become intelligible, translated into policy rationalities, and rendered ethically binding. In this sense, urgency operates as a temporal regime that legitimizes action, intervention, and prevention. At the same time, it structures how educational responsibility is understood, orienting its scope toward anticipated futures. In relation to this, the following subsections analyse urgency as a cross-cutting configuration operating at the intersection of several interrelated orders. I argue that these involve: transformations in time and its perception; modes of governing through anticipation and immunization (Foucault, Agamben, Esposito); processes of subjectification through which the subject of the “emergency alarm” emerges simultaneously as a subject of achievement and a subject of risk. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The point of the foregoing analysis is not to close the argument, but to return to urgency itself as a site of tension – one that demands further philosophical exploration rather than closure. Folding back to urgency reveals its central ambivalence. On the one hand, urgency can enable care, protection, and responsibility by foregrounding futures that matter. On the other hand, when urgency becomes the dominant mode of problematisation, it risks foreclosing the openness, exposure, and eventfulness that are constitutive of education as a practice of both worlding and subjectification. The critical question, then, is not whether education should respond to risks, but how urgency shapes what education can become by structuring which problems are posed as real. To think education philosophically today therefore requires not only asking which issues demand urgent attention but examining how urgency itself operates as a problem-posing condition – transforming the ontology of education and reconfiguring the grammar through which educational realities, subjectivities, and responsibilities become thinkable and actionable.
