Paper Pupils’ Perspectives on Differentiated Instruction and the Use of Digital Tools School of Education, FHNW, Switzerland Presenting Author:Differentiated Instruction (DI) is widely promoted as a central pedagogical strategy for addressing learner heterogeneity and advancing equity in inclusive classrooms (Gheyssens et al., 2020; Lindner & Schwab, 2020). In Switzerland, this expectation is codified in the curriculum (Lehrplan 21), which requires teachers to adapt instruction to pupils’ prior knowledge, performance levels, and learning needs (D-EDK, 2016). In recent years, the implementation of this requirement has increasingly been accompanied by digitally enhanced teaching materials, learning platforms, and adaptive educational technologies that promise more efficient, objective and scalable forms of differentiation (Bernacki et al., 2021). Numerous educational applications, learning videos, self-assessment tools, and data-driven platforms claim to personalise learning trajectories and support teachers in dealing with - heterogeneity in their classrooms. These developments are embedded in a broader transformations of educational knowledge production. In this light, differentiation is not only a pedagogical practice but also a technological project, shaped by assumptions about what counts as relevant knowledge, how learning is measured, and who is authorised to interpret pupils’ needs. Empirical research points to a first significant gap between the pedagogical potential attributed to educational technologies and their actual use in schools. Although a wide range of educational technologies promises to support differentiated instruction, research suggests that teachers often use apps, learning videos and platforms in limited or pragmatic ways that do not fully exploit their pedagogical potential for differentiation (Hangartner et al., 2024; Selwyn et al., 2017). Many applications remain aligned with standardised curricula and narrow conceptions of achievement. Teachers report both opportunities and constraints, emphasising that digital tools rarely replace pedagogical judgement but instead require ongoing interpretation and contextualization (Divanji et al., 2023). A second, even less explored gap concerns pupils’ perspectives. Although differentiated instruction and educational technologies explicitly target pupils as their primary beneficiaries, pupils’ experiences and interpretations remain marginal in much of the research literature. Studies foregrounding student voice show ambivalent experiences. On the one hand, pupils value choice, flexibility and perceived fairness. On the other hand, they also report uncertainty, misalignment with their learning level, and feelings of exclusion when instructional adaptations are insufficiently responsive (Scarparolo & MacKinnon, 2022). This paper presents a participatory research project that places pupils’ centre stage. Adopting a participatory approach, the study positions pupils as epistemic agents and co-researchers (Unger, 2014; Zahnd & Oberholzer, 2022, 2024) rather than passive recipients of differentiated instruction or digital learning tools. Drawing on participatory data, the study shows that pupils articulate a distinguished and critical understanding of digital tools. For example, pupils describe learning videos as frequently monotonous, poorly aligned with their questions, and unpredictable in quality, making it a matter of chance whether a video supports understanding or leads to disengagement. Learning apps are reported to produce rigid or incorrect feedback, for example by marking mathematically correct solutions as wrong due to formal criteria such as spacing or formatting. Such experiences undermine pupils’ confidence and sense of competence. Across data, pupils consistently emphasise that digital tools are only conditionally helpful and become meaningful learning resources when teachers actively accompany their use. Teacher presence is described as crucial for interpreting tasks and addressing misunderstandings. From the pupils’ perspective, digitally supported differentiation does not replace relational pedagogical work. By foregrounding pupils’ situated knowledge, the paper contributes empirically grounded insights into the conditions and limits of educational technologies in inclusive schooling. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This paper presents results from the Swiss research project DEEP Differentiated Instruction, which investigates practices and effects of differentiated instruction in primary school classrooms, with a particular focus on equity and the role of digital tools. The results presented are conducted using a participatory and ethnographic approach aimed at foregrounding pupils’ perspectives on differentiated instruction in inclusive classrooms. Data collection takes place in five primary school classes representing different organisational and instructional settings. In each class, five to six pupils are recruited as co-researchers. Selection aims to ensure diversity with regard to academic performance, gender and special educational needs. Rather than positioning pupils as interview partners, they are actively involved in the data collection and analysis (Zahnd & Oberholzer, 2024). Pupils document their experiences using complementary methods. They have the opportunity to use a research diary in which they record observations, questions, and reflections related to what helps and what hinders their learning process. On the other hand they get a smartphone with an app called “picvoice” with which they can collect photovoices (Wöhrer, 2017) to visually capture learning arrangements, materials, or moments they perceive as significant, including the use of apps, learning videos, and digital platforms. With these datasets they meet up with the academic researcher for meetings in which pupils discuss and interpret their materials together with peers and the researcher. These collective sessions are a key methodological element. They enable pupils to articulate their perspectives, negotiate meanings and reflect on their learning experiences in the classroom. In order to merge findings from all participating classes, all data sources, transcripts of the reflection meetings and researcher field notes are triangulated and analysed using grounded theory methodology (Strauss & Corbin, 1996). Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This paper demonstrates that researching differentiated instruction and the use of digital tools in inclusive classrooms requires both empirical and methodological reorientation. By positioning pupils as co-researchers, the study shifts the focus of knowledge production toward those most affected by differentiated instruction and digital learning technologies. The findings extend critical perspectives on educational technologies that caution against technocratic and data-driven conceptions of differentiation (Selwyn et al., 2017). While educational technologies are often presented as adaptive and individualised solutions, pupils’ perspectives on it reveal that digitally supported differentiation is experienced as meaningful only under specific pedagogical conditions. In line with research showing that the educational impact of digital tools depends less on their technical design than on how they are pedagogically appropriated in classroom practice (Hangartner et al., 2024; Selwyn et al., 2017), pupils describe apps and learning videos as frequently misaligned with their learning needs when used without sustained teacher support. Importantly, pupils emphasise relational and pedagogical dimensions such as teacher presence, dialogue, responsiveness, and recognition – dimensions that are central to inclusive education but often marginalised in data-driven approaches to differentiation (Gheyssens et al., 2020; Lindner & Schwab, 2020). Learning videos and apps are perceived as supportive only when teachers are familiar with their content and actively guide their use. Without such support, pupils report boredom, uncertainty, and experiences of misrecognition, for example when rigid app feedback incorrectly evaluates their work. Overall, the study argues that digitally supported differentiated instruction cannot be understood as a technical solution alone. Instead, it remains a fundamentally relational practice that depends on pedagogical knowledge and teacher-pupil interaction. By integrating pupils’ perspectives, the paper highlights the limits of educational technologies and underscores the importance of participatory research for developing a more inclusive and empirically grounded understanding of differentiation instruction in digitally enriched classrooms. Paper Differentiated Teaching in General Education: What Changes When Students with ASC Are Present in Classrooms? Cypriot Teachers’ Conceptualizations and Perspectives 1: Cyprus Pedagogical Institute, Cyprus; 2: University of Northampton Presenting Author:Differentiated teaching features prominently in European education policy as a key pedagogical approach for addressing learner diversity in general education classrooms (European Agency for Special Needs and Inclusive Education, 2014; UNESCO, 2017). Policy discourse typically presents differentiation as an inclusive strategy that accommodates diverse learning needs within mainstream settings. However, despite its centrality in policy frameworks, limited empirical evidence exists regarding how differentiated teaching is understood and enacted in practice when classrooms include students with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC). In particular, little is known about how the presence of students with ASC reshapes teachers’ pedagogical reasoning and enacting, professional judgement, and everyday classroom practices. This paper demonstrates that general education teachers in Cyprus experience notable changes in how they interpret and implement differentiated teaching when students with ASC are in mainstream classrooms. The key finding is that differentiation is not uniformly applied; instead, it becomes a practice shaped by teachers’ professional judgement and context, influenced by institutional and policy factors. These results challenge common policy views that consider differentiation a straightforward intervention for inclusion. The study finds that, when teaching students with ASC, teachers report enacting differentiation differently and with specific conditions. They adjust teaching methods focusing more on behaviour management, and voice greater concerns about accountability. This shift from a generally flexible and adaptive approach is central: teachers report that the presence of students with ASC leads to more structured, less spontaneous differentiation than in other general education contexts. Teachers report increased uncertainty in managing behaviour, setting appropriate academic expectations, and balancing inclusive intentions with accountability demands in classrooms that include students with ASC. Under these conditions, differentiated teaching becomes increasingly oriented towards managing classroom order and perceived risk. This shift is accompanied by greater reliance on institutional structures, formal procedures, and specialist support, which further reshape the scope and purpose of differentiation in practice. As a result, differentiation is no longer primarily enacted as an inclusion-oriented pedagogical approach but is reconfigured in more constrained and conditional ways. These shifts do not indicate resistance to inclusion or negative attitudes toward students with ASC. Instead, they show how differentiated teaching is renegotiated due to policy ambiguity, limited preparation, and accountability pressures in general education (Florian, 2014). In Cyprus, these trends are further explained by recent national policy developments. Despite official support for inclusion, Cyprus still runs parallel mainstream and special education systems under separate legislation. This separation leads to unequal resources and perpetuates ableist views, shaping how inclusion unfolds in classrooms. In examining differentiated teaching when students with ASC are present, this paper directly challenges policy narratives that frame differentiation as a simple, universally effective solution to inclusion. It argues that differentiated teaching is fundamentally reshaped by structural, institutional, and policy factors, and contends that meaningful inclusion depends on addressing these underlying conditions. While the study is based in Cyprus, its findings and analysis contribute to broader debates on the complexities of inclusive teaching and teacher professionalism across diverse educational systems. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Research Design This study adopts a qualitative research design to examine how general education teachers conceptualize and enact differentiated teaching, and how this practice is reshaped when students with ASC are present in mainstream classrooms. A qualitative approach is particularly suited to the study’s focus on teachers’ pedagogical reasoning, professional judgement, and sense-making processes, which are central to understanding inclusive practices as context-dependent and socially situated (Braun & Clarke, 2021; Florian & Black-Hawkins, 2011). Participants and Context The study was conducted in Cyprus and involved general education teachers working in mainstream elementary schools across the country. Participants were selected based on their experience teaching in general education classrooms that include, or have included, students with ASC. This sampling strategy ensured that participants could reflect comparatively on differentiated teaching across classroom contexts. The Cypriot education system, characterized by the parallel operation of mainstream and special education under separate legislative frameworks, provides a particularly relevant context for examining how inclusive pedagogical practices are negotiated in practice. Data Collection Data was collected through semi-structured interviews, providing both consistency and flexibility for participants to elaborate on salient issues (Kvale, 2009). The interview protocol addressed teachers’ conceptualizations of differentiated teaching, accounts of routine classroom practices, perceptions of changes related to the inclusion of students with ASC, and the institutional and policy contexts influencing pedagogical choices. This method was selected to elicit in-depth, nuanced perspectives on uncertainty, responsibility, and accountability, elements that are often underrepresented in more rigid research designs. Data Analysis The analysis followed a comparative and interpretive approach. Content, thematic and discourse analysis was applied to the data obtained so that, teachers’ accounts of differentiated teaching in classrooms with students with ASC be directly compared to their accounts from classrooms without students with ASC. This enabled the identification of qualitative shifts in pedagogical reasoning, priorities, and enactment when teaching students with ASC compared with those without. Differentiated teaching was treated not as a technical instructional method but as a context-sensitive practice shaped by classroom complexity, behavioural demands, institutional expectations, and policy pressures (Göransson & Nilholm, 2014). The analysis sought to generate analytically transferable insights rather than statistical generalizations. Ethical Considerations Ethical approval was secured prior to data collection. Participation was voluntary, informed consent was obtained, and participant confidentiality and anonymity were maintained throughout the study. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This study is expected to show that, though widely promoted in European education policy as an inclusive approach, differentiated teaching changes substantially in practice when students with ASC are in mainstream classrooms. The findings indicate that differentiated teaching is not stable or uniformly inclusive. Instead, teachers reshape it based on professional judgement, contextual constraints, and institutional expectations. A key finding is that the presence of students with ASC leads teachers to shift from flexible, adaptive differentiation to a more cautious, structured approach. In practice, teachers often focus on behaviour management and procedural compliance rather than on differentiation, which entails modifying learning goals, content, and procedures. This prioritization reflects teachers' uncertainty about expectations and accountability. The study does not see these shifts as negative attitudes towards ASC students. Instead, teachers renegotiate differentiated teaching in the face of unclear policies, limited training, and accountability pressures. In Cyprus, parallel mainstream and special education systems make these issues stronger. This reinforces inequalities and shapes responsibility and support. As a result, differentiation often serves as risk management rather than inclusion. The study contributes to broader debates on inclusive education. It challenges simple policy ideas that present differentiated teaching as a straightforward or universal solution. The findings underscore the need to examine the structures, institutions, and policies that shape classroom practice. More broadly, the study highlights that inclusion is a context-dependent, negotiated practice. It is not just a technical solution or individual teacher trait. Although this study is based in Cyprus, its conclusions go beyond one country. The tensions between policy goals, differentiated teaching, and classroom realities are evident in many European and international education systems. These systems are facing more student diversity and greater accountability. Paper The Role of Teacher Achievement Expectations for Students with Diverse Needs: Individual and Social Functioning and Academic Achievement Pädagogische Hochschule FHNW, Switzerland Presenting Author:Teacher achievement expectations have been shown to predict student achievement in subjects such as mathematics and German, well known as Pygmalion-effect (Wang et al., 2018). Teacher achievement expectations are self-fulfilling, i.e., teacher expectations influence the verbal and nonverbal teacher feedback to students, who perceive it and try to behave according to these expectations. Research has shown that teacher achievement expectations are biased (Wang et al., 2018). Teachers underestimate achievement in mathematics and German of students with diverse needs such as with low socio-economic status (SES) and with migration backgrounds (MB), because these students are less adjusted to the classroom norms (Dittmann-Domenichini, 2014). Teacher achievement expectations have been shown to mediate the effects of SES and MB on student achievement in mathematics and German (Neuenschwander & Niederbacher, 2021). Thus, teacher achievement expectations play a major role in explaining why SES and MB are associated with student achievement (educational inequality in school). Less is known about the extent to which teacher achievement expectations explain the effects of social processes in classrooms on student academic achievement. Farmer et al.’s (2019) correlated constraint model describes how social processes in classrooms can foster the social inclusion of students with diverse needs (i.e., MB and low SES). It describes how teacher-student-relationship (TSR) and student social functioning, such as prosocial behavior, are interrelated and explain academic functioning (i.e., academic achievement). Meta-analyses have reported positive correlations between TSR and academic achievement (Emslander et al., 2026). Enlarging Farmer et al. (2019), positive TSR could lead to benevolent teacher achievement expectations and thus, teachers encourage students to increase their achievement. Timmermans et al. (2019) reported positive correlations between positive TSR and teacher achievement expectations. Less is known about whether teacher achievement expectations mediate the effects of TSR on student academic achievement. However, there is evidence that student MB is negatively, and SES is positively associated with close TSR (Arachambault et al., 2024). In Farmer et al.’s (2019) model prosocial behavior is an aspect of social functioning on individual level, that is interrelated with academic functioning. Prosocial behavior is an aspect of other-oriented social competence and includes behaviors such as helping (Perren et al. 2012). Farmer et al.’s (2019) assume interrelations between concepts on individual level (prosocial behavior) and on group levels (TSR). Teachers appreciate student prosocial behavior (Longobard et al., 2021). Thus, students’ prosocial behavior is positively connected with positive TSR (closeness, no conflict) (Longobard et al., 2021). Caprara et al. (2019) also reported positive correlations between student prosocial behavior and academic achievement. Enlarging Farmer et al. (2019), teachers who positively evaluate students’ prosocial behavior could potentially hold benevolent achievement expectations (Longobard et al., 2021). Wang et al. (2018) reported positive correlations between prosocial student attitudes and teacher achievement expectations. Such benevolent expectations can turn into motivating students to increase their achievement. However, research also shows that student MB is negatively, and SES is positively associated with student prosocial behavior (Cirimele et al., 2024). The following research question will be examined: to what extent do teacher achievement expectations mediate the effects of student MB and low SES as well as TSR (conflict and closeness) and student prosocial behavior on student achievement in mathematics and school language (German). We hypothesize that teacher achievement expectations mediate (1) the negative effects of low SES and MB on student achievement in mathematics and German and 2) the positive effects of TSR (closeness, few conflicts) and student prosocial behavior on achievement in mathematics and German. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Sample The hypotheses were tested using a sample of N = 940 Students from 60 classes (mean age = 8.2, mean HISEI = 61.2, 30.5% have MB). Students were in 1st class (N = 100), 2nd class (N = 268), 3rd class (N = 291) or 4th class (N = 255). Schools and classes were randomly selected from the seven preselected German speaking Swiss cantons and contacted. At the beginning and the end of the school year, students, their parents, and teachers completed questionnaires. Most students participated at both measurement points (N = 755; 80.3%). A subset of students dropped out after the first measurement point (t1) (N = 33; 3.5%). No significant differences be-tween dropouts and participants in both waves were observed in any of the examined variables. Instruments Teacher questionnaire: Teachers reported their relationship towards students on the conflict scale with 3 items (Pianta, 2001, Ω =.81). Teacher expectations were measured using a single item for achievement in each subject, mathematics and German, for each student in their class (Neuenschwander & Niederbacher, 2021). Student questionnaire: Students reported their relationship to their teacher (closeness) with 3 items (Rauer & Schuck, 2003; Ω=.78). Students’ prosocial behavior was measured using peer ratings. Students were asked to rate four classmates with an item on prosocial behavior, based on the SOCOMP instrument (Perren et al., 2012). MB was assessed with the nationalities of the parents. Students were counted as having MB if at least one parent had a foreign nationality. Parent questionnaire: Students’ SES was assessed with the parents’ current occupations. Oc-cupations were coded with the International Socio-Economic Index of Occupational Status (ISEI) 2008 and transformed to a HISEI value. Achievement tests: Students filled out curriculum validated and reliable achievement tests for mathematics in each grade at the beginning (t1) and the end of the school year (t2). Reading competence in the school language German was assessed using a standardized test at t1 and t2. Analytical procedure Missing data was assumed to be missing at random. It was imputed 20 times using MPlus 9. The hypotheses were tested using two structural equation modellings (SEM), calculated with Mplus 9. One model includes achievement in mathematics, the second model is the same but replaces mathematics with German. In both models, achievement was measured at t2 after con-trolling for achievement at t1. Significant indirect effects indicate mediation processes. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings In line with the hypotheses, findings from a first SEM (achievement in mathematics) with a good model fit showed significant indirect effects from SES via teacher expectations in mathematics on achievement in mathematics. In addition, TSR (conflict in teacher perspective) and prosocial behavior indirectly predicted achievement in mathematics via teacher expectations. TSR (close-ness in student perspective) did not predict teacher expectations. There were significant nega-tive correlations between SES and TSR (conflict) and positive correlations between SES and prosocial behavior. MB correlated negatively with prosocial behavior. In the second SEM (German) with a good model fit, the same effects were found. In contrast to the model with mathematics, the indirect effect of MB on achievement in German via teacher expectations in German was also significant. To conclude, teacher achievement expectations explain the association between SES and MB as well as TSR and student prosocial behavior on student achievement in mathematics and German (mediations). Enlarging Farmer et al. (2019), teacher achievement expectations play a role in explaining the multilevel interrelations between social functioning in classrooms, TSR, and academic functioning in primary school. Students with diverse needs who have lower TSR and prosocial behavior are at risk of lower teacher achievement expectations and lower achievement. Teachers who reflect their achievement expectations can counterbalance effects of low SES and MB as well as from low TSR and low prosocial behavior on student achievement and thus foster inclusion. Students in teacher education and teachers working in schools should be sensitive to the role of teacher achievement expectations and need to reflect on how to foster inclusion.
