Paper Dealing with AI-Images: Analytical Media Critique of Pre-Service Teachers Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen, Germany Presenting Author:Visual outputs of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), including AI-Images, have become an integral part of everyday media practices. Following the viral Pope AI-Image in February 2023 (Vilentchik, 2023), such images have proliferated on social media, for instance through entertaining trends like “italian brain rot” in 2025 (Gupta, 2025). While often used for entertainment, AI-Images also go hand in hand with significant risks, as they can be employed to manipulate, misinform and discredit individuals or groups (Bray et al., 2023). This becomes particularly evident in the case of deepfakes, which refer to “photorealistic images [...] that have been algorithmically generated or manipulated” (Jacobsen & Simpson, 2024, p. 1) and which can further intensify the spread of fake news (ibid.). Existing research indicates that recipients often struggle to reliably distinguish AI-Images from photographs (e.g. Bozkir et al., 2025), thereby amplifying the challenges AI-generated imaginary pose to information credibility. With the continuous advancement of technology, AI-Images are becoming increasingly sophisticated and harder to identify (Künne, 2024). Accordingly, media literacy that goes beyond simple recognition of AI-Images is essential for a responsible engagement with social media. Young people are more likely to be exposed to AI-Images in their everyday media practices: In Germany, they spend an average of 231 minutes per day online, with social networks such as Instagram and TikTok among the most frequently used platforms (mpfs, 2025). As images are a central component of social media platforms, it can be assumed that adolescents come (unnoticed) into contact with them. In this context, teachers bear a special responsibility, as they are expected to foster media literacy in schools and raise students’ awareness of responsible and critical media use (KMK, 2016). Therefore, this study seeks to examine the extent to which Pre-Service Teachers exhibit media literacy in the context of AI-Images, enabling them to impart it in their future professional practice. This target group is particularly relevant, as they occupy a dual role as both active media users and future educators. Media critique “involve[s] a comprehensive examination of (mass) media in their complex societal entanglements. In this sense, critical recipients […] are not only able to question media. They can also reflect on their own relationship to a media offering and subject the media to evaluative judgement.” (Schmitt et al., 2020, p. 332). These various facets of media criticism are integrated into Baacke’s concept of media literacy (Medienkompetenz), which he structures into four dimensions: media knowledge, media use, media production and media critique (Baacke, 1996). Within the dimension of media critique, he further distinguishes three sub-dimensions: analytical, reflective and ethicaldimension (ibid.). In the analytical sub-dimension, “problematic societal processes […] are captured in an analytically appropriate manner” (Hugger, 2022, p. 22). In the reflective sub-dimension, „this knowledge […] is applied to oneself and one’s own actions” (ibid.). In the ethical sub-dimension “analytical thinking and reflective consideration are coordinated and defined in a socially responsible manner” (ibid.). The overarching question of the study, “How do Pre-Service Teachers act critically toward media in the context of AI-Images?”, is addressed through the research questions guided by Baacke’s concept of media critique: RQ1: To what extent do Pre-Service Teachers grasp AI-Images from an analytical perspective? (analytical sub-dimension) RQ2: How do Pre-Service Teachers evaluate different AI-Images ethically? (ethical sub-dimension) RQ3: To what extent do AI-Images affect Pre-Service teachers’ own media reception and practices? (reflective sub-dimension) Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used To address the research questions outlined above, an exploratory qualitative approach was chosen. In summer 2025, twelve focus groups with Pre-Service Teachers were conducted. The focus groups were thematically structured through three input tasks designed to stimulate discussion and elicit different dimensions of media critique. The first input included a pool of images containing both AI- and non-AI-Images, which participants were asked to sort accordingly. This task served as a warm-up activity and primarily addresses RQ1, focusing on strategies used to distinguish AI-Images from non-AI-Images and the participants’ knowledge of AI-Images. The second input comprised several social media posts featuring AI-Images. Participant were prompted by the moderator’s open-ended question “What do you think about these posts?”, which was intended to initiate discussion about AI-Images across different contexts and thereby address RQ2, particularly ethical evaluations. The third input presented headlines addressing image-based sexual abuse in the context of AI-Images. The guiding question, “How do such headlines make you feel?”, was designed to open a reflective level of discussion and to address RQ3, focusing on personal relevance and media-related reflection. One facet of RQ1, which concerns participants’ ideas and knowledge about AI-Images, is not solely examined in the first phase of the focus group, as relevant insights are expected to arise throughout the conversation. Although individual research questions are linked to specific input tasks, the narrative and interactive nature of the focus group setting allows for overlapping and cross-sectional analysis, meaning that multiple discussion phases may contribute to answering each research question. To analyze the transcript material, reflexive thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006) was employed as an interpretative approach “to identify patterns and meanings within the data” (Finlay, 2021, p. 103). Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The study aims to investigate the concept of media critique in the context of AI-Images empirically. Although media critique has been theoretically elaborated well, it has received limited empirical attention (Ernst & Seyferth-Zapf, 2024). This study seeks to address media critique on three levels: the analytic level including diverse strategies for recognizing AI-Images, such as visual cues, contextual analysis and source evaluation as well as knowledge about AI-Images; the ethical level, where participants are expected to articulate ethical considerations regarding AI-Images, such as manipulation and societal impact; and the reflective level, in which the analysis may highlight how AI-Images influence participants’ personal media engagement and critical awareness. Furthermore, the study aims to provide insights into which aspects of media critique Pre-Service Teacher already have and which aspects may still need to be developed. The study can thus serve as a starting point for pedagogical implications in teacher media education. The current status of the study is that it is still in the analysis phase. Paper Knowing and Acting with Digital Tools: Early Childhood Teachers’ Perspectives in the UK and China University of Sheffield, United Kingdom Presenting Author:This paper examines how early childhood teachers in two national contexts, the United Kingdom and China, understand, adopt, and negotiate digital practices in their everyday teaching. Digital technologies, platforms, and AI-enabled tools have become increasingly embedded in early learning environments, yet teachers’ perspectives on their usefulness, constraints, and pedagogical value remain under-examined. Early childhood education (ECE) is also positioned within shifting policy landscapes where expectations for digital competence, online safety, and data accountability are intensifying. In this context, the study asks: How do early childhood teachers in the UK and China perceive digital practices in their classrooms, and what contextual, cultural, and policy factors shape their adoption and use of digital tools? The paper has three aims: (1) to map teachers’ attitudes towards digital practices, including perceived usefulness, ease of use, and behavioural intentions; (2) to examine how teachers understand the place of digital technologies in play-based and early years pedagogical environments; and (3) to analyse how national and local ECE policies influence teachers’ professional decision-making and classroom practices. Through these aims, the study contributes to ongoing European debates on digital childhoods, teacher professionalism in changing sociotechnical environments, and the conditions under which educational knowledge is produced and enacted in early years settings. The study is informed by the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), which is used to conceptualise teachers’ perceptions of usefulness, ease of use, attitude towards use, and intention to integrate digital tools. TAM constructs provide a lens for understanding why teachers choose to adopt or resist digital practices, especially in resource-unequal or culturally distinct environments. The work is further situated within sociocultural perspectives on digital learning environments, recognising that digital practice is shaped by institutional norms, policy frameworks, and culturally embedded values regarding childhood, learning, and technology. The research adopts a sequential mixed-methods design: Phase 1 consists of a cross-national online survey (n = 215) with early childhood teachers in the UK and China. The survey includes TAM-based Likert scales and open-ended questions. Quantitative analysis involved reliability testing, descriptive statistics, and regression modelling to examine relationships among constructs. Qualitative responses were coded thematically. Phase 2 comprises a Critical Policy Discourse Analysis (CPDA) drawing on national and local early childhood policy documents from England and China (2001-2025). Using a thematic coding framework, the analysis focuses on eight themes: digital competence, online safety, curriculum expectations, assessment/data practices, teacher professionalism, resource allocation, governance, and screen-time guidance. The CPDA provides macro-level insights into how digital practices are framed, legitimised, and regulated. Phase 3 consists of semi-structured interviews followed by walking interviews with early childhood teachers in Sheffield and Xi’an. The walking interviews, conducted in classroom environments after the main interview, elicit contextualised reflections on real digital practices, classroom decision-making, and pedagogical reasoning. Interview analysis will follow reflexive thematic analysis. This paper offers an original contribution by integrating mixed-methods data within a cross-national comparative design. It responds directly to the ECER 2026 theme by examining how teachers navigate the changing conditions of knowledge and action within digitally mediated learning environments. The international comparison highlights how broader sociocultural, political, and policy ecosystems shape the possibilities and limits of digital practice. The findings will be relevant to European researchers, policymakers, and practitioners seeking to understand digital transformation in early childhood education and its implications for teacher development, equity, and children’s digital experiences. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study adopts a sequential mixed-methods design to investigate early childhood teachers’ perceptions and enactments of digital practices in the UK and China. Mixed-methods is particularly suited to exploring complex sociotechnical phenomena where neither quantitative nor qualitative data alone can capture the interplay between teachers’ beliefs, policy environments, and everyday pedagogical decisions. Phase 1: Cross-national survey An online survey was distributed to early childhood teachers across the UK and China (n = 215). The survey included demographic items, five-point Likert-scale questions adapted from the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), and open-ended questions. TAM constructs, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attitudes toward digital tools, and behavioural intention, were used to model teachers’ adoption of digital practices. Quantitative analysis included reliability testing (Cronbach’s α), descriptive statistics, independent-samples t-tests, and regression models to examine relationships between TAM variables. Open-ended responses were analysed using initial thematic coding. Phase 2: Critical Policy Discourse Analysis (CPDA) To contextualise teachers’ perspectives within national and local policy landscapes, a critical policy discourse analysis was conducted after document analysis. Policy documents from England (e.g., EYFS, DfE) and China (e.g., 3-6 Learning and Development Guidelines) published between 2001-2025. This analysis examined how policy narratives shape teachers’ expectations, conditions of practice, and conceptualisations of digital learning environments. Phase 3: Semi-structured interviews and walking interviews To explore how teachers interpret and enact digital practices within their classroom environments, semi-structured interviews were conducted with early childhood teachers in Sheffield and Xi’an. Interviews were immediately followed by walking interviews, enabling contextualised, situated reflections as teachers moved through their classroom spaces. Walking interviews are well suited for studies of digital practice because they foreground material arrangements, resources, and embodied professional reasoning. All interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Findings from all three phases will be integrated using convergence coding and joint displays to examine where quantitative patterns, policy discourses, and teachers’ lived experiences align or diverge. This integrated approach provides a richer understanding of how teachers navigate digital practices within contrasting socio-policy and cultural environments. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Preliminary findings from the survey and comparative policy analysis reveal notable contrasts and convergences in how early childhood teachers in the UK and China perceive and enact digital practices. Across both contexts, teachers generally expressed positive attitudes towards the use of digital tools in early learning, particularly for documentation, communication with families, and supporting children’s engagement. TAM-based analysis indicated that perceived usefulness was the strongest predictor of teachers’ intention to integrate digital technologies, while perceived ease of use showed significant variation between the two countries. UK teachers reported greater concerns about online safety, data protection, and unequal access to digital resources, whereas Chinese teachers highlighted institutional expectations, administrative requirements, and curriculum alignment as key influences on their digital practice. The policy analysis showed that England’s early years policies place strong emphasis on safeguarding, screen-time caution, and the need for practitioners to balance digital and non-digital learning experiences. In contrast, Chinese policy documents present digitalisation as integral to educational modernisation, emphasising teacher competence, smart classroom development, and national goals for digital transformation. These differing policy framings help explain cross-national patterns observed in teachers’ responses, suggesting that teachers’ digital practices are closely shaped by policy narratives and institutional priorities. The forthcoming qualitative analysis is expected to deepen these findings by illuminating how teachers negotiate tensions between pedagogy, policy demands, and material classroom realities. Walking interviews, in particular, are anticipated to reveal how digital tools are embedded, or sometimes marginalised, within daily routines, spatial arrangements, and teachers’ professional judgments. Overall, by integrating quantitative, qualitative, and policy data, the research provides a comparative evidence base to inform teacher development, digital policy design, and international discussions on equitable and meaningful digital practices in the early years. Paper Media Literacy Practice in Kazakhstan’s Schools: A Mixed-Methods Study 1: Dulaty University, Taraz, Kazakhstan; 2: Graduate School of Education, Nazarbayev University, Astana, Kazakhstan; 3: Institutional Research & Analytics unit, Strategy & Delivery Office, Nazarbayev University, Astana, Kazakhstan Presenting Author:This study examines how teachers in Kazakhstan develop and enact media literacy (ML) practices in their classrooms and how these practices are shaped by demographic, experiential, and institutional factors. Drawing on a mixed-methods design, the study investigates how professional development (PD), school conditions, and teacher characteristics interact to support or constrain ML implementation across diverse school contexts. The pedagogy of ML builds on constructivist principles, emphasising problem-solving, active learning, and critical reflection. It encourages both teachers and students to analyse and interpret various forms of media, including news articles, social media posts, and visual narratives, to understand how meaning is constructed in contemporary society (Hobbs, 2018; Potter, 2022). While digital technologies are central, ML extends beyond digital skills to include critical thinking, ethical media engagement, and participatory communication (Schmitz et al., 2024). Teachers’ capacity to work with sensitive curricular content and exercise professional judgement plays an important role in shaping classroom pedagogy, particularly in education systems characterised by strong policy control (Chong et al., 2021). Contemporary ML frameworks, including those addressing social media environments, shape how ML is understood and enacted in classrooms by providing conceptual guidance for teachers’ instructional decisions (Cho et al., 2024). In response to the spread of misinformation and persistent digital inequalities, ML is increasingly understood as a means of supporting democratic participation and the development of critical digital citizenship. Despite an expanding ML literature, most studies remain prescriptive or are based in high-resource Western contexts. Few studies investigate how ML unfolds in under-resourced or centralised systems where structural inequities and hierarchical governance shape pedagogy. In Kazakhstan, where many educators operate under strict curricular policies and uneven resource distribution, teachers’ engagement with ML is often shaped by both constraint and innovation (Yeleussiz & Qanay, 2025). While global ML frameworks emphasise core competencies such as analysing and evaluating media, research highlights the need to adapt these frameworks to local policy and educational conditions (Weinand, 2018). Teachers’ ability to implement ML depends not only on training and access to tools, but also on professional confidence and opportunities for context-sensitive development (Le et al., 2025). Emerging research from the Asia-Pacific region highlights the need to understand ML as a contextually situated practice rather than a universally transferable skillset (Lin et al., 2013; Weninger, 2017). Lin et al. (2013) show that ML in Singapore has been shaped by national policy priorities and institutional arrangements rather than adopted wholesale from global frameworks, while Weninger (2017) demonstrates that teachers’ understandings and classroom enactment of ML are strongly influenced by curricular expectations and school-level conditions. In addition, research on digital poverty in teacher education underscores how unequal access to digital resources and limited institutional support can restrict teacher agency, indicating that structural conditions might be addressed alongside pedagogical expectations (Arantes et al., 2025). Given the limited empirical research on teacher ML in post-Soviet and Central Asian contexts, this study explores how teacher and school-level factors shape ML implementation. It addresses the following questions:
This study contributes to broader debates on educational equity, teacher agency, and curriculum innovation in transitional education systems like Kazakhstan’s. By situating ML within local institutional and policy contexts, the study offers insights into how global educational ideals can be adapted in practice and informs both international ML research and national teacher education policy. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The study employs a mixed-methods approach to capture the complex, context-dependent dynamics of participants’ experiences and perceptions within their specific educational settings (Creswell, 2013). Given the study’s focus on both measuring and interpreting teachers’ ML practices, an embedded mixed-methods design was adopted (Creswell & Creswell, 2017; Morse, 1991). In this design, the qualitative component, which consists of interviews and open-ended survey items, was integrated within a predominantly quantitative framework to provide explanatory depth and contextual insight. Unlike a sequential explanatory design, which involves two distinct phases of data collection where qualitative findings follow quantitative results, the embedded design used here allowed both strands to be collected and analysed within a single phase. This integration enabled the qualitative data to expand on the quantitative findings, offering richer interpretations of patterns, relationships, and outliers observed in the statistical data (Creswell, 2013). Data Collection This study employed a mixed-methods approach combining quantitative and qualitative instruments to examine EFL teachers’ media literacy practices and the school conditions influencing them. Quantitative data were collected through an online survey completed by 158 teachers. The survey examined five core areas: school conditions for media literacy, teachers’ multimedia competence, teachers’ confidence and beliefs regarding media literacy, teachers’ innovative classroom practices, and students’ media literacy as perceived by teachers. These variables constituted the main outcomes of interest. The questionnaire reflected media literacy as a multidimensional construct, encompassing access, analysis, evaluation, and production of media. To ensure linguistic and cultural appropriateness, the instrument was administered in Kazakh, Russian, and English. Following a pilot study in rural, regional, and urban schools, minor revisions were made before full implementation. Independent and control variables included teachers’ professional development experience, teaching experience, media use patterns, and school location. Qualitative data were generated through three focus group discussions involving 31 EFL teachers and semi-structured interviews with three school principals. Focus groups enabled shared reflection on classroom practice and institutional influences, while principal interviews provided insight into leadership practices, school policies, and organisational conditions affecting media literacy integration. Participants were selected through purposeful sampling. The study involved three schools representing rural, regional, and urban contexts, ensuring diversity in resources, school culture, and access to digital technologies. Ethical approval was obtained from the Institutional Review Board of Kazakh National Women’s Teacher Training University, and all procedures followed national research ethics guidelines, with informed consent, voluntary participation, anonymisation, and secure data handling ensured throughout the study. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This study contributes to the growing body of research on ML by offering context-specific insights into how teacher- and school-level factors shape ML practice in Kazakhstan. Quantitative findings showed that professional development (PD) significantly enhances teachers’ confidence, multimedia competency, and student ML engagement. However, teachers who completed PD also reported lower perceptions of institutional support. Teaching experience was negatively associated with teacher digital competence and student ML outcomes, highlighting generational gaps in ML engagement. Teachers in rural schools reported more innovative practices despite having fewer technological resources, likely due to increased pedagogical autonomy and fewer curricular restrictions. In contrast, urban teachers described more rigid oversight, which constrained creative ML integration. Compared to teachers in village school settings, teachers in the city ( = -.39, p < .001) and regional centres ( = -.50, p < .001) appeared to employ less innovative practice for student ML. In order to interpret the statistical results more meaningfully, supportive qualitative comments were analysed. Teachers who completed ML training reported mixed experiences. For some, the course led to increased confidence and stronger integration of media in their lessons. Prior to the training, I regarded ML as an optional component. However, I now recognize it as a fundamental aspect of critical thinking and intentionally integrate media analysis or production into every instructional unit I design (Teacher 5, Regional School). Qualitative data deepened these findings, revealing disparities in infrastructure, school leadership, and access to training. Teachers emphasised the importance of autonomy, collaboration, and context-responsive support in sustaining ML innovation. Crucially, access to technology alone was insufficient, effective ML implementation relied on teacher agency, targeted PD, and supportive leadership. Overall, the study highlights that advancing ML in Kazakhstan requires more than infrastructure investment.
