Paper Making Adaptive teaching in Inclusive Classrooms Visible: Developing a Framework of Micro-adaptive Strategies in the AdamS Project 1: University of Cologne, Germany; 2: University Paderborn, Germany Presenting Author:Modern classrooms are characterized by pronounced learner heterogeneity, thereby confronting teachers with the ongoing challenge of responding to diverse learning needs in the immediacy of classroom interaction. While inclusive education research has generated profound knowledge about principles and conditions of inclusion (de Bruin, 2024), the way in which teachers put this knowledge into situational instructional practice is underrepresented. In this context, adaptive teaching strategies, particularly micro-adaptive strategies, represent a necessary condition for participation and learning opportunities for all pupils (Westwood, 2018). Diversity-sensitive teaching features a critical and reflexive engagement with aspects of diversity and categories of difference, appreciation of all students, and the provision of meaningful learning opportunities for the whole class. Accordingly, adaptivity plays a central role in translating diversity-sensitive principles into everyday classroom practice. In research on adaptive teaching, micro-adaptive strategies are conceived as spontaneous, situational adaptions emerging in interaction with learners and requiring flexible reactions to individual learning processes (Hardy et al., 2019; Parsons et al., 2018). In contrast to macro-adaptive planning-related decisions, micro-adaptive strategies refer to moment-to-moment adaptations occurring during teaching. From this perspective, adaptivity can be understood as the dynamic linking of learning conditions and learning opportunities within ongoing classroom interaction. Following the Ada-LIT framework (Bach et al., 2025), adaptivity is captured from multiple, interrelated perspectives that connect teachers’ perception, decision, and realization of adaptive strategies. This theoretical framework lays the foundation for the systematic identification and analytical structuring of micro-adaptive strategies and for relating them to different dimensions of heterogeneity in inclusive teaching contexts. By integrating the Ada-LIT framework with inclusive didactic models, an analytical approach that operationalizes micro-adaptive strategies as observable, comparable units is developed. To operationalize diversity dimensions, the allocation of micro-adaptive strategies is based on inclusive didactic frameworks which model inclusive teaching as a synergy of subject matter, individual learner conditions, and developmental differences (Heimlich & Kahlert, 2014). These frameworks provide a structuring perspective for analysing how adaptive actions address diverse learner needs in classroom practice. Although research consistently highlights adaptivity as a central strategy for high-quality teaching in very diverse classrooms and as a prerequisite for the fit of individual learner conditions and learning opportunities (Dumont, 2018), existing conceptualizations of micro-adaptive classroom practices often remain at a generic or subject-independent level. Consequently, they usually offer only limited insights into teachers’ situational and moment-to-moment acting in class. To date, empirically grounded models that systematically identify, conceptualize, and make micro-adaptive strategies accessible for ecologically valid analysis and further development of inclusive teaching practices are still lacking. Tackling this gap, the AdamS project aims to develop an analytical framework that systematically records micro-adaptive teaching strategies and outlines concrete options for action subject to different dimensions of learner diversity. Hereby, the framework seeks to broaden the scope of adaptive teaching strategies and to facilitate teachers’ decision-making in inclusive classrooms. The AdamS project is funded by the German Ministry of Education (01JV2401A) and carried out by an interdisciplinary research group from three German universities working in collaboration with teachers within a research-practice partnership. The study addresses the following research questions, linking knowledge generation about micro-adaptive teaching strategies to their potential for guiding instructional action in inclusive classrooms:
To bridge the gap between conceptual knowledge on inclusive education and teachers’ situational actions, the study follows a design-based research approach to systematically identify, conceptualize, and empirically verify micro-adaptive teaching strategies in authentic classroom practice. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The AdamS project follows a Design-Based Research approach and focuses development work within an intensive research-practice partnership to identify micro-adaptive teaching strategies in classroom videos (e.g., McKenney & Reeves, 2019). The empirical foundation for identifying relevant micro-adaptive strategies comprises video data (approximately 235 hours) from the DiPoSa project (Schroeder et al., 2025). The material originates from the school year 2022/2023 and documents primary social and science education in twelve classrooms (grades 1–4) across seven heterogeneous primary schools. The methodological approach enables identification of micro-adaptive strategies not only empirically, but also in terms of their ecological validity. The project realizes this approach through three sequentially building, iterative steps: First, an analytical framework is developed and validated through collaborative piloting (1), followed by systematic video analysis (2), and finally theoretical clustering of the identified micro-adaptive strategies with regard to different dimensions of student diversity (3). (1): Development, Piloting, and Validation of the Analytical Framework In the first step, the video analysis is methodologically prepared. Based on relevant literature reviews in adaptation research (Hardy et al., 2019; Parsons et al., 2018) and supplementary literature searches, established micro-adaptive teaching strategies are identified and systematized. The findings are synthesized using the Ada-LIT framework (Bach et al., 2025) and operationalized from multiple perspectives. In cooperation with practice partners, the analytical framework is piloted on selected teaching sequences to examine its applicability and ecological validity, and iteratively refined. (2): Systematic Video Analysis In the second step, the validated framework is applied to video material until theoretical saturation is achieved (no further relevant micro-adaptive strategies are expected). The analysis follows a mixed-methods design (Creswell, 2015): Initially, systematic rule-based coding of the material according to the developed analytical framework is conducted, documenting which adaptive strategies are realized under specific teaching conditions (instructional phase, learning content, student characteristics). In parallel, another analysis team conducts qualitative video interaction analysis on selected sequences to understand the concrete implementation of these strategies in real classroom interactions (Knoblauch & Tuma, 2022; Tuma & Schnettler, 2022). Results are synthesized, triangulated, and prepared as joint-displays (Kuckartz & Rädiker, 2022), creating a systematic overview of strategy distribution and interaction patterns. (3): Theoretical Clustering and Practical Operationalization In the third step, the identified micro-adaptive strategies are clustered and structured according to dimensions of student diversity (e.g., "developmental areas"; Heimlich & Kahlert, 2014) to facilitate the development of a practice-oriented adaptation matrix. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The AdamS project targets the identification and systematization of various types of micro-adaptive strategies in inclusive teaching contexts. To achieve this, strategies displaying situational moment-to-moment adaptions of teachers in response to heterogenous learning conditions are identified. The aim is to analytically describe the underlying functional logic of those strategies in inclusive teaching. The micro-adaptive strategies are integrated into a multidimensional analytical framework. Within this framework, different forms of micro-adaptive teaching are differentiated and assigned to several dimensions of learner heterogeneity as addressed in inclusive education contexts. Here, special needs areas such as cognitive, linguistic, or behavioural needs for support are considered. Furthermore, a complementary model is proposed that systematizes the starting points of micro-adaptive strategies as well as their realization in classroom practice. This model distinguishes whether an adaptive adjustment is teacher-, peer- or learning material-delivered. These modes of delivery do not exclude one another and may co-occur within the same instructional situation. Overall, the contribution provides an analytical framework that operationalizes micro-adaptive teaching strategies in inclusive classrooms and makes them analytically observable and systematically comparable. The outcomes are expected to establish a basis for the analysis of inclusive teaching processes and may enhance teacher training by extending the repertoire of describable adaptive possibilities for action. By situating micro-adaptive strategies derived from authentic classroom situations within a structured framework, the project aligns with current debates in inclusive educational research on how diversity is faced in everyday classroom practice. Paper Perspectives of Children with Learning Disabilities on Using Graphic Symbols in Mainstream Primary Schools University of Plymouth, United Kingdom Presenting Author:The objective of this study was to explore the perspectives of five children with learning disabilities in two mainstream primary schools who are using graphic symbols as a visual aid. The study examined children’s understandings and feelings towards graphic symbols from the software Widgit Online (WO), a programme based on systematic sets of graphic symbols that can be used to design bespoke visual support through a series of templates and resources. Despite a wide range of different policies and practice worldwide, challenges exist in achieving equitable education, particularly for children with learning disabilities who often work at a different pace to their same-aged peers (Gulliver, 2024). This can lead to them spending more time outside of the classroom, away from peers and a qualified teacher (Radford et al, 2015). Instead, an inclusive pedagogy seeks to enable all children’s participation in learning without marginalisation (Florian and Beaton, 2017). Visual aids such as graphic symbols are one example of such universal support which could aid all pupils in supporting social communication skills and reinforcing inclusion (Abbott et al, 2014; Pampoulou and Detheridge, 2007). Research into Widgit symbols has seen value in its use for children with autism and learning disabilities in increasing access to public and green spaces (Abbott and Detheridge, 2009) and improving children’s understanding and literacy skills (Pampoulou and Detheridge, 2007). However, little is known about the use of Widgit symbols in mainstream primary schools. Whilst research has begun to identify practitioners’ perceptions of the use and value of graphic symbols in supporting inclusive practice (Kjellmer et al, 2024; Kambouri et al, 2016; Pampoulou, 2016), there is a gap in exploring the perspectives of children who are using the symbols themselves. More importantly, this study seeks to understand the perspectives of children with learning disabilities, whose voices have traditionally been excluded from research about them (Gulliver, 2024). Therefore, this study uses a flexible child-centred methodology based on the principles of the Mosaic approach (Clark, 2017), to ask:
Grounded in an interpretivist paradigm, the Mosaic approach (Clark, 2017), is a participatory, child-centered methodology, offering a range of visual, audible and adaptive opportunities for children to communicate their experiences. This design adopts the social-cultural view of children as experts in their own lives; a strength-based approach which positions all children as competent and capable of participating in research, when provided with appropriate tools (Gulliver, 2024). Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used A complex phenomenon, disability is framed through a critical realist lens, which acknowledges the interplay between sociocultural and historical constructions as well as underlying physical and physiological realities of having a learning disability (Bhaskar and Hartwig, 2010). Therefore, methods must ensure participants contribute towards understandings of their lived experiences. Children with learning disabilities are capable of contributing to research about their lives, through ethically sensitive research which carefully considers their views (Gulliver, 2024). Ethical guidelines were closely followed, including the safe storage of data, relevant permission from gatekeepers and anonymity of all participants (BERA, 2024). Purposeful sampling was used to recruit two mainstream primary schools who had a WO license and were engaging with Kjellmer et al's (2024) suggestions for using WO in different ways to promote accessible learning environments. With permission from the headteacher of both schools, parents/carers were sent information letters and given an opportunity to talk to the researcher. As gatekeepers, they provided informed consent for their children to take part, whilst the researcher ascertained continual assent from the children throughout the school visits. Five children aged 7-9 years with a learning difficulty took part from two primary schools in a city in the Southwest England. Both schools had above average numbers of children identified with special educational needs/disabilities and were in localities that experienced low socioeconomic status. Children were invited to share their experiences using WO through flexible, creative 'interviews' with the researcher four times throughout the school year, and visits lasted around 20 minutes. The Mosaic approach (Clark, 2017) does not rely on verbal communication, so data included photographs taken by the children, audio recordings, drawings and the creation of a photobook which children designed to share their thoughts about the Widgit symbols. Audio recordings were transcribed after each fieldwork visit, and together with the children's visual contributions, data was analysed thematically (Braun and Clark, 2023). Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings It is anticipated that as the children in the study use WO throughout the year, they will increase their knowledge and confidence of the graphic symbol programme. Findings will indicate how children with learning disabilities perceive the benefits and challenges to using graphic symbols. It is hoped that children will share examples of using WO in class, and demonstrate how the graphic symbols can act as visual prompts, clarifying instructions or aiding their memory. Children will offer explanations of what the symbols can ‘do’ in their everyday learning experiences. For example, occasions where symbols assisted them in making sense of instructions, participating in an activity or using new vocabulary. Importantly, it is expected that the children’s perceptions and experience of graphic symbols will highlight the potential of symbol-supported communication to strengthen inclusive pedagogy by embedding accessible visual tools as a routine feature of classroom life, thereby enhancing engagement, agency and learning for children with learning disabilities and their peers. Paper Teacher Experiences and Inclusive Education Adaptations for Students with Visual Impairment in Regular Schools in Malaysia University of Glasgow, United Kingdom Presenting Author:Inclusive education aims to include students with special needs in mainstream classrooms alongside their typical peers, enabling a collaborative learning environment. However, students with visual impairments (SWVI) often face challenges in accessing the curriculum effectively. Despite Malaysia's introduction of the Zero Reject Policy in 2018, which means no students with disabilities are refused enrolment in any school and have equal access to education, the studies examining the experiences of teachers and SWVI are limited. This lack of empirical evidence has resulted in insufficient resources and materials to support effective implementation. In contrast, international research on inclusive practices is increasing, reflecting the global awareness of supporting SWVI in inclusive environments. There is a gap of information and research regarding the experiences and instructional practices of teachers and how two types of teachers – mainstream teachers and special education teachers – work together to ensure SWVI can learn in an inclusive setting. Understanding teachers' perspectives and classroom adaptations in Malaysia is crucial to providing insight into the international educational community. Teachers play a critical role in ensuring the success of inclusive education, as their attitude and practices significantly impact the development of students with disabilities (Hodges, 2004). This research explores the teachers' practices in regular schools and the challenges and opportunities for them to ensure the quality of SWVI learning is in a good position. This research adopted a qualitative research approach by using a multiple-case study design to explore teacher experiences and inclusive classroom adaptations for SWVI in Malaysia. Semi-structured interviews and classroom observations were conducted in three different schools, and a total of 15 teachers who have direct experience teaching SWVI participated in this research. Data were analyzed using Reflexive Thematic Analysis (Braun and Clarke, 2022) to identify key challenges, adaptation strategies, hopes, suggestions, and support systems. The findings are also interpreted through the eleven areas of the Curriculum Framework for Children and Youth with Visual Impairment (CFVI). Findings reveal that teachers face multiple challenges, including limited training in pedagogy, inadequate teaching resources, time management, and the complexity of relationships between regular teachers and special education teachers. Despite these limitations, teachers demonstrate creativity and professionalism by modifying instructional materials, employing assistive technology, and collaborating with parents. These adaptive strategies help SWVI to be more independent in a regular school. In conclusion, this research highlights the interplay between teachers and the system supporting inclusive education in Malaysia. By focusing on teacher experiences and practical adaptations, this study provides insights that are crucial for improving inclusive education locally and contributes knowledge to international communities that are seeking information to enhance the quality of inclusive environments for SWVI. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This research used a qualitative research approach through a multiple-case study design. The decision to use a qualitative research approach was based on its alignment with the research questions, which aimed to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the educational and lived experiences of students with visual impairment and the experiences of teachers. As stated by Cresswell (2002), qualitative research provide deep understanding through rich and in-depth data. This study operates within an interpretivist paradigm, seeking to understand the spesific context of the case through multiple perspectives. The context of the case means that the 11 areas of the Curriculum Framework for Children and Youth with Visual Impairment (CFVI) were fully utilized in this study and were implemented at three schools. Each school is located in a different geographical area and has its own characteristics. The duration of research in every school was one month. Participants were selected based on spesific inclusion criteria to ensure relevance and depth of data, as follows: i. Principal: Headteacher at School A, School B, and School C. (n=3) ii. Teacher (Group A): Trained in special education training pedagogy, teaching students with visual impairment in inclusive primary schools for more than 5 years. (n=6) iii. Teacher (Group B): No training in special education pedagogy, teaching students with visual impairment in inclusive primary schools for more than 5 years.(n=6) This paper specifically addresses one research purpose and two research questions as a part of this broader research. RP: Explore how the curriculum accommodations and adaptations support students with visual impairment and balance ‘learning to access’ and ‘access to learning’ to strengthen personal agency and independence in their education. RQ1: What accommodations to the school curriculum enable students with visual impairment to achieve personal agency and independence? RQ2: What adaptations do teachers use to ensure students with visual impairment achieve learning objectives in the classroom? Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This study revealed that teachers play a crucial role in ensuring that students with visual impairments receive a quality education. Teachers are one of the important stakeholders that affect the success of Inclusive education. However, other stakeholders such as the government, parents, and the community also must make proactive efforts to support the goals of inclusive education. The elements of CFVI are also important to ensure that the SWVI will receive better education quality. This research also examined the hope, experiences, barriers and challenges among the teachers in implementing inclusive education in regular schools. Findings indicate the reasons why the teachers agree and disagree about inclusive education and identify the appropriate time to implement inclusion for SVWI. Besides that, these findings suggest an urgent need for professional development for teachers on Braille literacy, orientation and mobility, and understanding the development of SWVI. However, several limitations are identified in this study. First, the limited duration of this study is one month per school across three schools. A short duration of the study may not capture the long-term effects of changes in practices (Creswell, 2018). Paper Inclusion for Nonspeaking Autistic Learners: Access to High-Tech AAC and the Critical Role of Schools in Equitable Implementation Dublin City University, Ireland Presenting Author:Communication is a fundamental human right and a prerequisite for meaningful participation in education and society. Yet across Europe, many autistic children who do not rely on spoken language continue to experience systemic barriers to communication access. Spoken language remains positioned as the normative and preferred mode of communication within educational systems, while augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is frequently misunderstood and undervalued. Combined with limited funding, training, and support, this leaves many children without effective means to participate fully in education and society. International research suggests that approximately 30% of autistic individuals do not develop functional speech (Lorah et al., 2021). This has profound implications for education systems, particularly given the rapid expansion of autism-specific educational provision across Europe. In Ireland, between 2013 and 2023, the number of special classes increased by over 600%, with 89% designated for autistic learners (Travers, 2023), reflecting similar trends across Europe. Given that many learners in these settings are likely to rely on AAC, its effective implementation is no longer a specialist concern but a core educational issue. AAC encompasses a range of approaches that supplement or replace speech, with high-tech AAC (e.g. speech-generating devices) offering particular potential to support autonomy and complex language use (Topia & Hocking, 2012). A strong evidence base indicates that high-tech AAC enhances participation and quality of life for autistic children and young people, without inhibiting speech development (Ganz et al., 2015; Light et al., 2019). However, access to technology alone is insufficient; effective AAC use depends on interaction, modelling, and sustained implementation across everyday contexts (Lorah et al., 2021; Norrie et al., 2021). Against this backdrop, this paper presents an evaluation of the AsIAm AAC Support Programme in Ireland, a national initiative providing high-tech AAC devices alongside information, guidance, and support for autistic children under 18 who are non-speaking or minimally speaking. The study examines how knowledge about AAC is generated, mobilised, and enacted across home and school contexts, and what this means for equitable access to communication in education. Guided by the RE-AIM implementation science framework (Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance), the research enables a systematic examination of how evidence-informed AAC practices are adopted, enacted, and sustained across different programme models and educational contexts. A mixed-methods design captured the perspectives of multiple knowledge actors, including families, educators, and minimally speaking children themselves. Preliminary findings show that access to AAC was largely parent-led, inconsistent, and shaped by systemic barriers. While effectiveness of AAC was reflected in increased agency, participation, and communicative opportunities for children and families, adoption, implementation, and sustainability across contexts were contingent on adult confidence, school engagement, and access to ongoing support. These findings highlight the situated and relational nature of AAC implementation, illustrating how knowledge does not travel seamlessly from research to practice but is mediated by local conditions, institutional priorities, and the diverse expertise of families, educators, allied professionals, and advocacy organisations. In alignment with the ECER 2026 theme “Knowing and Acting", this study foregrounds the gap between what is known about effective AAC practice and how such knowledge is mobilised in real-world settings. By evaluating an initiative that connects families, educators, and an advocacy organisation, the paper highlights how research can be translated into practice while remaining sensitive to local contexts and systemic complexities. The implications are significant for educators, researchers, and policymakers seeking to strengthen inclusive communication practices and uphold children’s rights to participation in increasingly complex educational ecosystems. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The evaluation of the AAC Programme was guided by the RE-AIM framework, which provided an overarching structure for examining programme reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation, and maintenance across multiple socioecological levels (Glasgow et al., 2019). RE-AIM was selected due to its strong alignment with the aims of the evaluation and its capacity to address realist questions concerning what works, for whom, in what contexts, how, and why (Holtrop et al., 2021). Beyond child communication outcomes, the framework supported examination of how AAC access occurred, how supports were delivered, and how AAC use can be sustained across contexts, including classrooms. RE-AIM was used as a flexible organising framework to guide data collection, analysis, and integration, while allowing inductive insights to emerge from participant accounts. The use of this implementation science framework is novel in education research, and offers a useful model for conceptualising implementation processes in future research. A mixed-methods design was employed, combining a cross-sectional parent survey with qualitative interviews and focus groups. An advisory group, comprising stakeholders with expertise in AAC, disability advocacy, and family support, was established to inform study design, recruitment materials, and interpretation of findings. Ethical approval was obtained from the institutional Research Ethics Committee. The survey aimed to provide an overview of programme reach, engagement, satisfaction, and perceived impact across a larger cohort, while qualitative methods enabled in-depth exploration of experiences across different AAC access pathways. Recruitment occurred in two stages, with AsIAm acting as a gatekeeper to distribute study information and the survey link. Quantitative data were collected via an anonymous online survey completed by 49 parents of children participating in AsIAm AAC programmes. Parents were invited to opt into follow-up qualitative participation through a separate consent process to ensure survey anonymity. Following parental consent, children were invited to participate. Children’s interviews were conducted flexibly in recognition that no single method is suitable for all children or circumstances. Interview approaches were adapted to children’s communication profiles and aligned with best practice principles for enabling children's participation (Kazmierczak-Murray, O’Mahony & Carey, 2024). In total, qualitative data were generated from 21 participants, including seven parents, eight speech and language therapists, two AsIAm programme staff, two teachers, and two children. All qualitative data were analysed using Framework Analysis (Ritchie & Spencer, 1994). Quantitative and qualitative findings were integrated at the interpretive stage using RE-AIM as a shared analytic reference point. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings In line with the conference theme “Knowing and Acting”, the findings show how AAC knowledge is enacted across families, schools, and other stakeholders, often in response to gaps in statutory provision. Reach: Access to AAC was most often achieved through informal, parent-led routes rather than statutory pathways. Families typically learned about the programme through word of mouth, schools, or professional networks, and almost half of the children had not received speech and language therapy prior to participation. While the programme mitigated statutory delays, access remained uneven, differing by geography, language barriers, and parental advocacy. Effectiveness: Change was described by participants as increased agency, participation, and emotional regulation. Children used AAC to make choices and express preferences, sometimes for the first time. Parents reported less frustration and more confidence, while professionals observed greater engagement across home and school. Social outcomes were less consistently reported and tended to emerge gradually. Adoption: Uptake varied and was influenced by adult confidence, ongoing modelling, and school engagement. Parents often felt overwhelmed early on, while use in schools depended on staff knowledge and attitudes to AAC. Implementation and Maintenance: Implementation depended on the quality of support. Autism-informed, neuro-affirmative input supported shared understanding and competence. Sustained use was strengthened by embedding AAC in home, school, and community contexts. Parent networks also normalised AAC use and reduced isolation. Although grounded in Ireland, the findings reflect wider European patterns of diagnostic gatekeeping, uneven school capacity, and reliance on family advocacy. RE-AIM provides a transferable lens for examining AAC implementation across education systems.
