Paper Dear Diary, Which One Works? An Exploratory Comparison of Five Diary Formats Hasselt University, Belgium Presenting Author:Diary methods offer a unique window into the shifting moments that shape everyday life. They capture fluctuations in thoughts, emotions, and actions that often disappear in memory recall, a strength recognised across several fields (Bolger, Davis & Rafaeli, 2003; Ohly, Sonnentag, Niessen & Zapf, 2010). In educational research, diaries have been widely used to track how learners and educators navigate their daily practices, providing insights closely tied to participants’ real-time experiences and everyday settings (Noyes, 2004; Jacelon & Imperio, 2005). Beyond documenting events, diaries invite participants to articulate meaning, emotions, and reflections, aligning with participatory approaches where voice, writing, and experience are central and met (Cahill, 2007; Meth, 2003). This exploratory pilot study examines how different diary formats shape what becomes possible to learn, drawing on preliminary data and on diary research traditions and a situated understanding of knowledge production, a perspective that views reflective accounts as shaped by the material and temporal conditions under which they are produced (Haraway, 1988; Latham, 2003). Rather than asking only what participants say, the study explores how format choice influences feasibility, participant engagement, and the richness and length of reflection. Although diaries are well established as tools for studying lived experiences (Alaszewski, 2006; Laurenceau & Bolger, 2005), comparative work across analogue and digital formats remains rare. Yet technological developments have expanded the diary landscape from handwritten journals to digital documents and audio-based formats, each associated with specific strengths and limitations (Filep et al., 2018). To explore these methodological questions, this study compared five diary formats: paper diary, digital diary, smartphone dictaphone, external dictaphone, and WhatsApp voice messages, over a three-week period. Twelve participants, including ten secondary school teachers, one professor, and one postdoctoral researcher, recorded daily reflections on their professional and learning/teaching experiences. The analysis, as outlined by Braun & Clarke (2008), focused on three dimensions: feasibility, user experience, and data richness. Across formats, the diary functioned not only as a tool but also as a medium shaping participants’ reflections. Paper diaries encouraged more intentional and structured writing but required sustained effort. Digital diaries offered ease and flexibility but sometimes led to shorter, more functional entries. Audio formats, whether through dictaphones or WhatsApp voice messages, tended to generate more spontaneous and emotionally nuanced reflections. Yet, transcription inevitably transformed and filtered these expressive qualities. These preliminary findings echo earlier observations that diary formats shape what participants disclose, how they disclose it, and how researchers interpret it (Meth, 2003; Noyes, 2004). The study offers preliminary methodological insights into the intertwined nature of medium and message. Within this pilot study, format choice appeared to influence which voices were more prominently expressed, how participants engaged with the research process, and the richness of data that became accessible. Because the analysis focuses on format-related conditions rather than context-specific outcomes, these insights are relevant for diary-based research across diverse educational systems and non-formal learning contexts, including those found across European and international settings. As education research increasingly draws on diverse data sources, this comparison demonstrates how diaries provide detailed and personal insights into the everyday experiences of learning and teaching. By clarifying how different formats shape reflection and meaning-making, the study contributes to ongoing methodological refinement by informing future diary-based research designs and supporting a more deliberate and reflexive use of diary methods in educational research. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This pilot study was designed to explore the feasibility and experiential qualities of different diary formats and to generate preliminary insights in preparation for their use in future research in non-formal educational contexts, where sustained engagement, accessibility, and expressive diversity are central concerns, particularly in work with young people for whom continued participation in education cannot be taken for granted. Participants and recruitment The study involved twelve participants: ten secondary school teachers, one university professor, and one postdoctoral researcher. The sample was intentionally diverse in age, gender, teaching experience, and subject area, reflecting recommendations that diary studies benefit from heterogeneity in participant profiles (Bolger et al., 2003; Jacelon & Imperio, 2005). Recruitment was conducted through professional networks, following ethical approval. All participants provided informed consent, and anonymity was assured. Procedure The study ran for three weeks (13 weekdays). Each participant was assigned to one of five diary formats: a paper diary, a digital diary (using Google Docs), WhatsApp voice messages, a smartphone dictaphone, or an external dictaphone. All participants responded to the same reflective prompts addressing their daily educational experiences, challenges, and moments of learning. Prompts for audio-based formats were delivered via WhatsApp at alternating times (morning, afternoon, mixed), allowing for exploratory insights into temporal preferences, as suggested in prior diary design literature (Bolger et al., 2003; Ohly et al., 2010). Orientation and closure Before the diary period began, participants attended a 40-minute introductory session that covered study goals, ethical considerations, and the expected time investment. Infographics provided step-by-step instructions tailored to each diary format. At the end of the three weeks, participants completed a brief feedback questionnaire and participated in a 30-minute debrief session. Such closure conversations are recommended to support reflexive engagement and participant meaning-making (Cahill, 2007; Meth, 2003). Data management and analysis Written diaries were scanned or exported; audio entries were transcribed verbatim, acknowledging, following Noyes (2004) and Latham (2003), that transcription introduces its own interpretive layer. The dataset was analysed using Braun and Clarke’s (2008) six-phase thematic analysis, supported by MAXQDA software. Coding proceeded inductively, generating themes related to feasibility, user experience, and data richness, dimensions consistent with prior methodological evaluations (Alaszewski, 2006; Filep et al., 2018). Reflexive notes were kept throughout to capture the researcher’s positionality (Haraway, 1988). A second coder reviewed the transcripts to enhance interpretive consistency. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Based on this exploratory pilot study, the comparison of five diary formats suggests that medium and message are closely intertwined. Written diaries foster structured, elaborated reflections, echoing earlier findings that paper formats encourage depth but require greater participant effort (Alaszewski, 2006; Filep et al., 2018). Digital formats support flexibility and ease of access but may prompt more concise entries, reflecting observations in contemporary diary research about the trade-off between efficiency and depth (Ohly et al., 2010). Audio formats, through dictaphones or WhatsApp voice messages, invite spontaneous and emotionally rich expression, resonating with studies that highlight the expressive potential of voice-based methods (Noyes, 2004). Three insights stand out across formats. First, feasibility and engagement in this study depended on how well the format fit into daily life, consistent with work showing that compliance is tied to routine compatibility (Bolger et al., 2003; Laurenceau & Bolger, 2005). Convenience alone does not guarantee depth or sustained reflection. Second, data richness is shaped by the interaction between modality and reflection. Voice recordings bring tone, rhythm, and affect into the data in ways written formats cannot (Cahill, 2007; Latham, 2003). Conversely, written diaries allow for pause, revision, and narrative structuring. Third, researchers must remain aware of the potential for mediation. Transcription converts spontaneous speech into written form, modifying its expressive characteristics and prompting interpretive inquiries previously identified in diary and visual research (Meth, 2003; Noyes, 2004). Taken together, these findings position diaries not as neutral vessels but as socio-material configurations that co-construct knowledge (Haraway, 1988). Attending to the epistemic role of the medium strengthens qualitative research by situating knowledge in its material and technological context. Diary methods remain a valuable approach for capturing the subjectivity, temporality, and authenticity of educational experience, elements that are increasingly important in contemporary research landscapes shaped by standardisation and datafication. Paper Open Learning Spaces as Critical Reflective Structural Frameworks for Digital Communication and Cooperation Universität Vechta, Germany Presenting Author:The increasing interdependence of data-generating and data-processing communication technologies and socio-political change raises fundamental questions for the transformation of schooling (Bock et al., 2023; Bradbury, 2019; Hartong et al., 2021; Hillman et al., 2020; Holloway, 2020). To date research is investigating how digital technologies correspond with efficient teaching, improve performance and optimise individual learning processes (Proske et al, 2023, Gerjets/Scheiter 2019, Spiegler et al, 2023, Kaspar et al 2020). At the same time, however, related and equally relevant issues such as democratic participation, social cohesion and equitable access to education have received less attention to date. The current debates can be grouped into different areas of tension, which serve as a socio-political and research-logical framework for the argumentation in this presentation: First, , there is the tension between individualisation and solidarity. While on the one hand On the one hand, there is a tension between individualisation and, in some cases, optimisation tendencies, as exemplified by research on the potential of learning analytics (Troeger et al,2023), on the other hand, studies on fake news, democracy education or how solidarity in schools emphasise the importance of community building and solidariy cooperation (Szakács-Behling, 2022). In a post-digital school, the question arises as to how schools can remain or become spaces where pupils learn what it means to be part of a democratic community. This is even more challenging as learning processes become increasingly individualised, technically medieated and geared towards optimised outputs from individuals (Leineweber & Wunder, 2021). Second, we further frame our empirical explorations by examining the tension between targeted skills acquisition as an educational goal, for example, in the wake of the Pisa shock (Gundlach, 2003) and discussions about unknown futures (Macgilchrist et al 2019), whose shape and skill requirements are still uncertain. Schools face the challenge of ensuring basic skills while successfully supporting heterogeneous learning groups (Scholz, 2007). Studies on digital skills (ICILS, etc) serve as an incentive or pressure to act, as they highlight weaknesses in contemporary schooling and suggest reforms. At the same time, technological innovations are shifting the focus to so-called ‘future skills’ (Buchs 2025, Langhof, 2024). In addition to subject-specific knowledge, skills such as flexibility, independence, critical and constructive thinking, and collaborative problem-solving are becoming increasingly important (Buchs, 2025). These future skills require learning environments in which pupils not only acquire facts, but also act independently, reflectively and responsibly and work cooperatively.Within this context, this article focuses on schools that have identified “open learning spaces” as a potential solution to the described tensions. Against this background the contribution explores, how these open learning spaces function as an organisational structure in which digital communication and collaboration processes can be closely intertwined with individualised teaching and a school culture geared towards cooperation. The focus is on the question of how digital communication can be integrated into formal and informal school contexts and to what extent open learning spaces are a central prerequisite for this.Theoretically, this paper draws on concepts of school development (including Rolff, 2025, 1998, Maag Merki 2008, Holtappels 2010) and research on digitality in the school context, which understand schools as organisations undergoing digital transformation, and initially summarises these in an overview (Wilmers et al, 2021). Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used As a part of the research project investigating school transformation processes, a methodological approach based on grounded theory was chosen (Glaser & Strauss 1967; Strauss & Corbin 1990, 1996; Charmaz 2014), as this research project is of a exploratory nature (Burdewick 2003 ). The data is based on 15 guideline-based interview with teachers, school administrators and educational and didactic leaders. The interviewees were selected using theoretical sampling (Glaser & Strauss, 1997), which was based on a developing interest in knowledge. The aim was to include different perspectives, institutional contexts and areas of responsibility in order to reveal both contrasts and recurring patterns. The guided interviews were designed to support the free flow of narrative from the interviewees while addressing three central topics: the beginning of the change, the course of the change and the experiences of the interview participants. The evaluation began with an intensive examination of the transcribed interviews using open coding (Strauss & Corbin, 1990, 1996). The ai, was to precisely identify phenomena, develop divers codes and maintain a board views of possible dimensions of meaning. The section of codes tool place in two phases. The first phase (‘media, iPads, LMS, internet, cloud, communication’) and the second phase (‘learning guides, learning offices, self-regulated learning’) served as the starting point for the analysis and conceptual structuring of the material according to basic themes. In the subsequent axial coding (Strauss & Corbin 1990), the generated codes were condensed into higher-level-categories. This phase was characterized by comparison within individual interviews and between different cases. While minimal contrasts helped to identify commonalities and stabilise categories, maximum contrasts revealed differences that led to the expansion of categories or the modification of existing hypotheses. Deviating cases were not considered anomalies, but rather valuable sources of insight for a differentiated understanding of the subject area. Particularly productive codes for further analysis included ‘communication,’ ‘digital technologies,’ ‘learning offices,’ ‘technology,’ ‘process,’ and ‘development.’ These individual codes were grouped into ‘axis categories’ (Böhm 2005). Memos were written on an ongoing basis to document key analytical findings and interpretations, which made it possible to identify tensions in the transformation processes more precisely. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Our empirical explorations show how open learning spaces, understood as pedagogically and didactically pre-structured learning arrangements that enable self-organised, often digitally supported learning processes (Bock & Schreiber-Kehrhahn, 2025; Thiersch & Schlöpker, 2023), open up and limit (new) forms of relational professionalism between pupils, teachers and school administrators that are promoted by digital media. In these settings, not only are individual learning paths structured and supported, but they also provide a framework for ongoing negotiations about responsibility, support and control, which are continuously recalibrated in the situational interaction between the actors involved. In this way, role shifts become visible, for example when teachers increasingly act as advisory learning coaches and when school administrators create conditions that promote collaborative decision-making and coordination within the teaching staff. Based on our analysis, it can be assumed that the targeted use of digital media could open up spaces for communication and collaboration in which feedback, advisory processes and coordination can be organised independently of time and place. Particular attention is paid to the systematic development of skills in digitally mediated communication, collaborative work and learning-accompanying coaching. In this context, the focus is on interactions between pupils as well as between teachers and school management. Learning studios can be seen as an environment in which digital tools can be tested, critically reflected upon and gradually integrated into existing school processes. At the same time, it is expected that these settings will both intensify and limit relational professionalisation processes between the various actors and make visible how professional relationships are reconfigured under the conditions of digitally supported teaching and learning. Paper Studying Adolescents’ Media Practices in a Deep Mediatized Society: The Methodological Potential of Digital Media Diaries FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany Presenting Author:The meta-process of deep mediatization has fundamentally restructured the conditions of socialization, education, and learning for young people by the nearly omnipresent embedding of digital media infrastructures in everyday life (Couldry & Hepp, 2017; Hepp, 2019; Krotz, 2017). In order to conduct a thorough investigation into the socialization processes related to media, it is recommended that researchers adopt a comprehensive perspective on the media practices and individual media repertoires (Hasebrink & Domeyer, 2012) of children and young people within the context of their social relationships (Kammerl et al., 2021). It is evident that the boundaries between learning, entertainment, communication and social interaction are becoming increasingly indistinct in the context of the use of a single device, such as a smartphone or tablet (Ito et al., 2010; Mascheroni & Siibak, 2021; Potzel et al., 2024). Consequently, the categorization of media use into discrete contexts, such as "formal" and "informal" learning, has become increasingly obsolete. Instead, it is imperative to comprehend media use within the context of multifaceted relationships between the individual, social domains and technical affordances. This contribution addresses the methodological challenges that arise when studying young people’s media-related practices under conditions of deep mediatization. It aims to address the need to understand how socialization and education are shaped by ongoing social and technological transformations. In this context, traditional qualitative methods face the challenge of reproducing normative or rationalized accounts rather than capturing actual media practices of young people as they occur in situated contexts. This methodological discrepancy is especially problematic in light of the increasing significance of digital media for educational trajectories, identity formation, and social engagement (Mascheroni & Siibak, 2021; Pacetti et al., 2023; Selvakumar et al., 2023). Empirical research on adolescents' media practices is confronted with a fundamental challenge: a significant number of pertinent practices are habitual, routinized, and only partially conscious. Therefore, (young) individuals frequently encounter difficulties in articulating their daily media consumption during retrospective interviews (Koch et al., 2021). This difficulty stems from the inherent complexity of these practices, which are intricately interwoven within tacit routines and micro-interactions that often elude explicit introspection (Hasebrink & Domeyer, 2012; Horst et al., 2016). Consequently, traditional retrospective qualitative methods face the challenge of reproducing normative or rationalized accounts rather than capturing actual media practices as they occur in situated contexts. To encounter these challenges, diaries have been utilized as a research tool in the field of media usage analysis (Lev-On & Lowenstein-Barkai, 2019; Scharkow, 2016). The completion of diaries in the study participants' "natural" environments has been shown to increase immediacy, as the process of data generation exerts a minimal invasive effect on their daily lives (Koch et al., 2021). In light of this background, the contribution presents methodological insights from a qualitative longitudinal study, which was funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Over a period of seven years (2018 to 2025), the study examined the media-related socialization of children and adolescents and their media repertoires within the context of the family and other social domains. In addition, the project sought to gain a practice-oriented understanding of adolescents' media use, media routines, and the actors and social domains that are meaningful for their media repertoire. The study combined established qualitative methods – such as semi-structured interviews with children, adolescents and parents – with structured media diary conducted with adolescents. In the last survey wave 2024 a digital media diary was utilized. The digital media diary was conceived as a low-threshold, mobile-based instrument that enabled participants to document their media-related activities in real time, employing brief textual entries, screenshots, videos or voice notes (Koch et al., 2021). Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The digital media diaries were completed by a total of eleven young people out of a sample including 13 adolescents aged 15 in Germany. The group consisted of six girls, four boys and one non-binary adolescent. In advance, it was ascertained that all young people had their own smartphone and were permitted to use messenger services on these devices. Parents and young people were informed that the entries would be treated confidentially and would only be read by the research team. The team was then responsible for anonymizing and pseudonymizing the entries. The messenger application “Signal” was selected for the survey because it was already installed on a significant number of young people's devices and was less problematic than other commercial applications in terms of data protection concerns. The young people received a short introduction video on how the media diary works and were asked to complete the media diary over a period of one week (7 days) and received at least one message per day from the research team with an open question about their media practices and reflections on their media usage (e.g., “Who have you used media with the most today, and what kind of media?”). The young people could respond to these questions with flexibility in terms of time and location using their own private devices. Participants were encouraged to utilize multimodal response options that they deemed most suitable, including text messages, audio files, screenshots, or videos. Subsequently, the data underwent transcription, and images, videos and audios were saved and anonymized. The data from the media diaries was evaluated using qualitative content analysis (Kuckartz & Rädiker, 2023) using the software MaxQda as well as individual case reports and used in a sequential triangulation of methods to prepare and conduct the subsequent interviews with adolescents and parents. In a subsequent step, the data collected in the initial evaluation round was utilized to conduct a secondary joint evaluation. This methodological approach permitted the execution of both case-specific and cross-case analyses of the data on the daily media routines of adolescents and important social influence factors. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The approach of digital media diaries has been particularly effective in capturing forms of media use that are typically not observed in conventional interview settings. These include parallel media use, algorithmically structured content flows, and brief, repetitive interactions with digital platforms and applications. A close examination of the data reveals that the diary data in particular facilitates the reconstruction of temporal patterns of media routines. This, in turn, enables the identification of significant human and non-human actors – such as peers, family members, teachers, influencers, platforms, and recommendation systems – that structure adolescents' everyday communication practices in a deep mediatized society. The contribution posits that digital media diaries, particularly when integrated with other qualitative methodologies, present a promising avenue for addressing the discrepancy between young individuals' practical media experiences and their reflexive disclosures. Methodologically, they facilitate a more precise alignment with adolescents' life worlds and promote a more nuanced analysis of how deep mediatization influences socialization, communication and education across formal and informal contexts. Conceptually, the findings underscore the need to rethink educational research frameworks so that they adequately account for the fluid, hybrid, and processual nature of media-related practices under conditions of deep mediatization. The contribution of this research is twofold: first, it provides a novel empirical perspective on the entanglement of media, learning, and social change; and second, it contributes to ongoing debates within educational research on how to empirically grasp this entanglement. However, the article also critically reflects on the limitations of the digital media diary approach and the methodological challenges involved in its implementation and integration with other qualitative research data.
