Paper Developing Metacognition with Generative AI? Reclaiming Human Judgment Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway Presenting Author:In this paper, I investigate modes of action and conceptions of subjectivity implied in the literature on the pedagogical use of generative artificial intelligence (GAI), and how these conceptions affect the space for judgment, imagination, and relational learning. My starting point is an emerging trend in educational research that promotes generative artificial intelligence as a tool for developing students’ metacognitive skills and awareness (see, for example, Albus & Seufert, 2024; Martin et al., 2025; Rokhsari, 2025; Tankelevitch et al., 2024; Xiao & Liu, 2025; Yin et al., 2025). Often marked by technological optimism and teleological, goal-driven assumptions, this discourse conceptualizes metacognition primarily as an individual capacity, in which students learn through trial and error to instruct GAI and thereby “boost” their learning. I will show how such claims typically rest on three interrelated and problematic premises:
In response, I develop a critical perspective that challenges this view by drawing on Hannah Arendt’s interpretation of Kant’s reflective judgment and her notion of an “enlarged mentality”—the capacity to “think in the place of everybody else” (Arendt, 2006, p. 217)—situated within a broader theoretical framework in which judgment and understanding develop through action, embodied interaction, and dialogue (Di Paolo et al., 2018; Finke et al., 2023; Finke & Solli, 2025; Gadamer, 2000, 2001). Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The paper adopts a conceptual, hermeneutic, and critical-analytical methodology. It does not aim to generate empirical findings, but rather to interrogate theoretical assumptions embedded in an emerging body of educational research on the use of generative AI for metacognitive development. The first step involves a close, systematic reading of representative studies that frame GAI as a tool for enhancing students’ metacognitive awareness through structured prompting and iterative feedback. Through this textual analysis, I identify three recurrent premises concerning individualization, linearity, and technological generativity. In the second step, I employ a philosophical–theoretical approach that draws on Hannah Arendt’s interpretation of Kant’s reflective judgment, Gadamer’s hermeneutics, and enactivist theories of embodied interaction. This framework serves as a lens for critically examining how different conceptions of action, subjectivity, and learning shape the pedagogical possibilities afforded by GAI. The approach thus combines conceptual critique with theoretical reconstruction, enabling a re-articulation of metacognition as a relational, dialogical, and human-generative capacity rather than a primarily individualized cognitive skill. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The analysis demonstrates that current research on GAI‑supported metacognition often rests on problematic assumptions about individual cognition, linear skill development, and technological generativity. These framings risk positioning students as passive evaluators of machine output rather than as active participants in meaning‑making and judgment. By introducing an alternative perspective grounded in Arendt’s reflective judgment and dialogical, embodied theories of understanding, the paper reframes metacognition as a relational and human‑generative capacity. This calls for educational approaches in which GAI is integrated in ways that preserve and expand the space for imagination, shared inquiry, and intersubjective judgment. Paper Between Earth and Sky – Reconceptualising Education as an Intergenerational Place of Hospitality Linköping University, Sweden Presenting Author:Education tends to be theorised using temporal categories of change. Apart from the semantic structure of words like learning, development, formation and emancipation, the reliance on change is implicit also in a range of theorisations, particularly ones that are interested in what makes education a unique practice (e.g., Noddings, 2013; Vlieghe & Stamojski, 2019; Biesta, 2021; Todd, 2023). To pick up one example from an ocean of variations, Biesta argues that ‘pointing’ is constitutive of the form of education as such (2021, Ch.6; see also Vlieghe & stamojski, 2019; Sedwick, 2003). The point of pointing is “redirecting someone’s attention” (Biesta, 2021, pp. 77-78), which indicates how change is present even when not explicitly mentioned. Theories of education that rely on change are unavoidably founded on distinctions between the not yet full beings (children) and full beings (adults) – a critique that child/hood studies scholars have repeatedly directed against education (see Malone, Tesar & Arndt, 2020). However, scholars from this field similarly rely on the Change-image in their theorisations of education. For example, Karin Murris, who is one of the few to explicitly engage with literature both from childhood studies and educational theory, argues for the conception of the educator as a “pregnant stingray” (2016, pp. 181-186). Murris is careful to avoid the impression that it would be the educator that changes the child, advocating instead for a collective learning endeavour. Yet her focus on becoming as the metaphysics underlying education ties her conception tightly to change, which therefore risks reproducing the distinctions it tries to escape (see also Rautio, 2013; Hickey-Moody, 2009; Olsson, 2009). My paper is motivated by a commitment to re-think education in line with childhood studies’ conception of the child and the associated critique of educational theories. To do so, I re-frame educational theory in spatial rather than temporal terms, moving away from change. My argument connects with ongoing discussion about what is educational in education (e.g., Vlieghe & Stamojski, 2019; Biesta, 2021; Todd, 2023) or, in other words, what is the essence of education. This is to some extent a prescriptive effort concerned with the essence of good education. The critique put forward by childhood studies has to date remained somewhat limited in its impact on educational theorising, in part because few scholars from that field have engaged with this more prescriptive dimension and related literature (although see Murris, 2016). My work seeks to remedy that but also extends earlier spatialities of education where the focus has more often been explanatory and descriptive (see Kraftl et al., 2022 for a recent review). I start from my previous work on hospitality as a possible understanding of education as a welcoming of the newcomers of our world (Varpanen, 2025; cf. Ruitenberg, 2015). I then push the notion of hospitality further by focusing on the implied connection to place. Shifting the question from what is educational in education to what it means for education to take place, I put forward a view of education as a place and the educator’s work as cultivation and nurturing of this place. I develop this view in more detail with the help of Martin Heidegger’s understanding of human existence as a gathering of earth, sky, mortals and divinities. I interpret Heidegger through Tim Ingold’s work on generations and their correspondence, with a particular view on the place of children and childhood in this correspondence. With Heidegger and Ingold I create a tentative understanding of education as a rooted and open space – a space between earth and sky – where different generations correspond with each other. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used I follow Deleuze and Guattari in understanding philosophy as creation of concepts (1994). While various uses of this characterisation are possible, my use highlights the analogy between works of art and philosophical concepts that underlies this notion (Deleuze & Guattari, 1994; see Varpanen, 2025, Ch.2). An artist creates an artwork, a landscape painting for example, by trying to capture the perceptions and affections present in a particular landscape. In the process, the perceptions and affections become independent of their observer, they become percepts and affects captured in the painting, and can later be experienced by people viewing the painting (Deleuze & Guattari, 1994). The creation of a concept is not about capturing perceptions or affections, at least not primarily, but about capturing events of thought – in this case a way of thinking about education. As the artist uses materials like the canvas, paints, and brushes to create percepts and affects, a philosopher uses words and references to create his concepts. This means that creating concepts often requires a kind of bricolage where the sense of the words used is pushed into new directions (Lévi-Strauss, 1966, p. 18). Creating concepts is thus a methodology in the etymological sense of following (methodos) a journey (hodos) of collecting words (logos). In its general outlook, my analysis follows a phenomenological or even a post-phenomenological approach. This approach is connected to the work of thinkers like Biesta (2021) and Todd (2023) who take a phenomenological perspective to educational theory in the sense of starting from the first-person point of view. In Biesta’s (personal communication) fitting expression, education is not a “spectator sport” but should rather be theorised from the perspectives of those taking part, so to speak. I connect this to the phenomenologists' effort of understanding the general structure of human experience or, in more authentically phenomenological terms, the meaning of being. In developing this, I follow the explicitly spatial trajectory that becomes evident in the later Heidegger (see Malpas, 2012) as well as in the thought of thinkers such as Levinas and Nancy, who are characterised as post-phenomenological thinkers by some (Simpson, 2025). My analysis is post-phenomenological also in the sense that it seeks to take seriously the possibility that the foundations of human experience or being are in fact beyond human (Salminen & Vadén, 2024; Ash & Simpson, 2016). Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The conceptualisation of education I put forward leads to three key shifts away from the ways the essence of education can be thought based on change. First, educational work becomes understood more in terms of being with or working through (Saari & Mullen, 2020, p. 1474) than work aiming to produce outcomes in, for, or with students, which here includes also notions like “redirecting someone’s attention” (Biesta, 2021) and becoming (Murris, 2016; Rautio, 2013). Working through does not require dismissing contents, learning or shifts in attention as unimportant. It does however require – and this is the second point – that the purpose of education becomes more tightly connected to nurturing relations or correspondence with newcomers. While talk of relations as crucial to education is by no means novel, my suggested conceptualisation gives it a more prominent place by positing it as the very purpose of education (cf. Noddings, 2013), thus also aligning education more closely with childhood studies conceptions of the child. Finally, my conceptualisation reimagines how to assess whether we have been successful in our educational efforts. I suggest that assessment of educational success should not only include student outcomes or educator actions, but also informal markers of an existing rapport between the educator and a child. Insider jokes, tokens of appreciation, habitual practices that are meaningful to both educator and educand – these everyday phenomena are rarely considered useful indicators of educational success. However, if we admit with Malone, Tesar and Arndt (2020) that children are ontologically complete beings – and therefore not in need of changing – it would not hurt to focus more on such indicators as indicators of success in education. Paper Digital Umgang and the Social Justice Discourse: A Double Ontological Threat to Education and Democratic Politics 1: KULeuven, Belgium; 2: Polish Naval Academy, Poland Presenting Author:In this contribution we analyse two – seemingly unconnected – phenomena that mutually reinforce one another posing a threat at an ontological level to education and politics, namely: the emergence of the digital and the currently dominant form of social justice discourse. With this we refer to our previous research concerning the relation between education and politics (Authors) where we have – following Arendt (1958; 1961) – conceptualised both as distinct, autonomous spheres of life, governed by different logics, but at the same time fundamentally connected. In the following analysis we focus on the commonalities between these spheres, as the very existence of both is at stake. Ontologically speaking, education and politics share particular arrangements, gestures, and practices: different people gather around a thing that is a part of the common world that they share and that requires strangers to meet and talk with each other, i.e. to think together. The gathering around this thing comes about thanks to teacherly gestures: someone points to a thing, names it, focuses everyone’s attention on the matter, sketches a preliminary account of it, etc. Teacherly gestures are thus necessary for enacting study practices: people gather around the matter they find important and examine it together – helping each other in going beyond one’s particular view. In politics the aim is getting at a common decision about the matter that is a maximally informed one. In education the aim is studying the world and engendering a bond with what exists. These arrangements, gestures and practices are threatened today firstly by the emergence of the digital. While at the brink of proliferation of the Internet there was for the hope that it might bring about a milieu of permanent, unlimited and free access to information and knowledge, as well as an advanced environment of instant communication and unbound creativity, today we are faced with a feudal-oligarchical digital “sphere” that encompasses our lives on a massive scale. With the rise of the digital practices (e.g. scrolling, browsing, texting,) have been established and phenomena (e.g. virality, #tags) came about that are so pervasive that even offline daily practices are shaped or mediated by the digital. The digital frames our relation with the world, with others and with ourselves, and – therefore – is responsible for the emergence of a particular Umgang – a term Martin Heidegger (1962) used to name our daily way or dealing with, or getting about things. In other words, the digital is not some external threat we could simply analyse, assess, criticize and resist, but it is deeply ingrained into our existential structures: in the way we perceive, understand, interact, communicate, and go about everything that exists. The emergence of the digital Umgang can be – therefore – conceived of as a gargantuan pedagogical apparatus imposing relentless training in attention redirection (Gazzaley & Rosen 2016) leading to a profound existential jittering – a convulsive oscillation between multiple poles of attention that cannot be stopped, a kind of sustained agitation that renders study practices impossible. The digital mediates our relation with the world, other people and ourselves: the way we perceive ourselves and other people becomes textualized (Illouz 2007) and similarly, things and the world as a whole lose their materiality (Han 2022). Following Zuboff’s (2019) analysis of the strategies of personalised persuasion serving a large-scale behaviour management, it can be argued that the disappearance of the common world is the key feature of digital Umgang. The ever growing personalisation of contents makes the world appear tailored to individual interests and preferences and hence we end up living in so many filter bubbles. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The issuing proliferation of infinite “worlds” leads to the content we engage with becoming increasingly extreme (as opposed to radical). This in turn is exacerbated via the mechanism of resetting: each filter bubble resets itself permanently by constantly replacing contents that are no longer valued and that no longer capture attention with something even more extreme, so as to grab our attention again. The conclusion to draw is dim: the possibility of gathering collectively and studiously around a thing in common is seriously threatened, because sustained attention and even memory as such are abolished and because there is no longer a world we share. At first sight, demanding social justice is a matter of a completely different nature than the effects of digital Umgang. Indeed, this noble ideal led to many progressive policies taking away oppression, enhancing human dignity, causing respect for differences, bringing equality of opportunity, equal rights, equal distribution of resources, etc. And without a doubt, it contributed to many desirable social, economic and political advancements. Although we have no intention of downplaying the value of this ideal, we want to take issue with currently dominant discourse of social justice, i.e. the prevailing way in which the idea of social justice is rendered and used today by political actors from across the ideological spectrum. It is this discourse (rather than the ideal itself) that poses a similar threat to education and politics as the emergence of digital Umgang. As Capeheart & Milovanovic (2020, p. 4) write: “the study of ‘social justice’ is intimately connected with the study of causes of harm”. Regardless of whether the causes of harm are structural, harm itself never is. Harm always concerns particular people, not structures. The point is always that there are people, identified through their harm, who are subject to an injustice that must be addressed without delay. Unfortunately, this harm is connected with an unredeemable past, a history of repeated and reproduced injuries. As Brown (1995) suggested, this reasoning is a logical trap. The wounded’s fight for justice entails identity claims of a wounded collective subject to be recognized as wounded. Such a recognition – however – can never lead to the overcoming of the injury, as that would undermine the original identity claim as a claim for justice. The wound must thrive, must be affirmed and condemned at the same time, in order to uphold the claim for justice. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Injustice is – therefore – perpetual, and what is left is the moral superiority of the harmed. The only possible course of action left is doing injustice to injustice. This, however, universalises the logic of injury (Chouliaraki 2021) and it unleashes the following internal dialectic of the social justice discourse: the shame of the oppressors becomes their wound. It is the injustice done to the injustice they profited from, as well as the pride of the wounded and their claim of moral superiority stemming from it that marks them in the eyes of the “newly wounded” the new oppressors. The whole structure reverses. This dialectic never stops producing competing claims to injury. At the level of political practices, the predominance of this discourse leaves no place for deliberation, as there are only demands of the harmed. There is no place where the wounded could meet (as they see each other as perpetrators that tactically force their false, trivial, or fantasized injuries), as there is no point in gathering – nothing is shared, no thing that gathers and divides (Arendt). Rather, the injured seem to live on different planets, in different worlds, unable to understand each other, to recognize each other’s pain, continuously offending each other, reinfecting the wounds. Moreover – as examples of censorship show (Authors) – the harm is tabooed, and cannot be studied together. The conclusion is that that key educational and political arrangements, gestures and practices are rendered ontologically impossible. Hence, in spite of good reasons to keep the spheres of education and politics apart, today digitization and the predominance of a social justice discourse enforce the disappearance of a common world and hence the spheres of education and politics are under jeopardy.
