Exploring Themes in Digital Detox Research: Insights from a Literature Review 1Digital Business Institute, School of Business and Management, University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria, Steyr, Austria; 2Institute of Business Informatics – Information Engineering, Johannes Kepler University Linz, Linz, Austria In modern society, digital technologies have become essential tools for individuals and organizations, offering unprecedented opportunities for communication and collaboration. However, concerns about the negative effects of digital technology use, such as declined well-being or reduced work productivity, have led to the emergence of digital detoxing as a promising strategy to counteract adverse effects. Digital detoxing refers to the temporary or complete disengagement from digital technologies, including actions such as abstaining from social networking sites and taking breaks during computer work. To guide future research, we conducted a literature review with a focus on empirical research dealing with the voluntary, limited abstinence from use of digital technologies. Thematic analysis of the 61 identified studies revealed eight major themes, including behavioral change, experience, health, motivation, social interaction, strategy, stress perception, and work. Overall, this review provides a comprehensive overview of the digital detox research field.
Conversational Agents in a Game Context Universität des Saarlandes, Germany Conversational Agents (CAs) are systems that use natural language to interact with users. These interactions do not always proceed smoothly, which negatively impacts continued usage. Games provide both entertainment and function as a bonding activity, creating intrinsic motivation. Accordingly, CAs and users connecting in a game context could solve awkward interactions. In this paper, we conduct a systematic literature review, differentiating game-based CA applications in different areas. Our research found that gameful CA applications are most commonly found in education, use gamified features or appear as ingame characters, and are designed for children or general audiences. The paper supplies promising implications for CA design and presents a research agenda, including directions for further studies on a common theoretical framework, CA behavior, interaction design, and other target audiences.
Fostering Inclusivity – Towards Principles for Inclusive Information Systems Design Leuphana University Lüneburg, Germany Designing information systems (IS) for impaired individuals is crucial yet challenging. Current inclusive design approaches often prioritize technical functionality in artifact design. However, they frequently overlook social and structural factors within design processes, such as promoting social inclusion or addressing stereotypes. This limits design processes’ inclusivity. To address this research problem, we conducted a systematic literature review of inclusive design approaches unveiling six inclusion principles. These principles, derived from examining inclusive design approaches against the functional, social and critical disability model, advocate social and structural dimensions, which existing inclusive design approaches often neglect. The proposed principles can thus guide designers to more effectively incorporate functional, social and structural dimensions of disability in design approaches and by this, can foster greater inclusivity.
Evaluation of Hypothetical Document and Query Embeddings for Information Retrieval Enhancements in the Context of Diverse User Queries viadee Unternehmensberatung AG, Germany The task of Information Retrieval (IR) is the foundation of question-answering and information search systems. The complexity of these retrieval systems evolved to enable an effective search of a variety of documents based on users’ information needs. However, the quality of the retrieval results highly depends on the question phrasing and structure heavily influenced by the user’s age, expertise, background, and aim. This paper aims to close the gap between user-specific query structures and the content of various documents by employing the approaches Hypothetical Document Embeddings (HyDE) and Hypothetical Query Embeddings (HyQE). Both approaches achieve promising results in terms of effectiveness and robustness. An evaluation indicates that HyDE and HyQE outperform traditional retrieval methods such as BM25 and plain embedding methods.
Process Mining - Analysis of the Current Status University of Applied Sciences, Germany Process mining is essential in companies, uncovers processes, diagnoses problems and triggers automatic corrections. This discipline combines process modeling with current event data. The full potential is not yet being exploited, particularly due to a lack of digitalization in SMEs. The results of this research underline the growing importance of AI and ML in process mining. The integration and selection of suitable tools are identified as challenges. Future research addresses ethical aspects.
Exploring the Digital Sustainability of Luxury Supply Chains: Overview and Propositions for Action TU Braunschweig, Germany The luxury fashion industry has repeatedly come under pressure for alleged human rights violations. Luxury fashion companies need to engage in sustainable behavior to counteract their negative reputation. This is enhanced by current and coming legislation, social pressure, and competition that force luxury companies to adopt strategies to monitor their supply chains and design sustainable products. One way to achieve this is by implementing adequate digital technologies in luxury supply chains. This study aims to uncover the most important topics in luxury research on digital sustainability and to make blind spots visible. Based on 19 contributions, promising research areas are presented that underline the potential of digital tools in the luxury industry from an Information Systems (IS) research view. This study contributes an analysis and an overview of digital technologies addressed in research on luxury supply chains and crafts a set of propositions for IS research to explore the field.

Unveiling the Landscape of Medical Image Annotation Tools: Software Artifacts Review and Taxonomy Development 1Karlsruher Institut für Technologie, Karlsruhe, Germany; 2Helmholtz Information and Data Science for Health (HIDSS4Health), Karlsruhe/Heidelberg, Germany Medical image annotation tools (MIATs) are vital to enable the creation of high-quality annotated training data for machine learning models in medicine. Choosing the most suitable MIAT for a given medical image annotation task is not a trivial choice. While research and practice provides several lists and rankings of MIATs, these lack a structured approach to relevant functionalities and character-istics of MIATs which may be required to address the unique requirements of medical image annotation tasks. Against this backdrop, this study aims to sys-tematically analyze the landscape of MIATs and classify them based on relevant characteristics. We conduct a software artifacts review of 16 relevant MIATs and synthesize our findings into a taxonomy of MIATs which includes 14 dimensions describing relevant characteristics of MIATs. Our results illustrate the diverse landscape of MIATs and can support medical practitioners in choosing the MIAT that is most suitable for their annotation task.
Towards a Deconstruction of Loyalty Program Research - A Systematic Review and Research Agenda Universität Würzburg, Germany Loyalty programs have become omnipresent in both traditional and online retail. Since various nuanced forms of these programs have been established over the years, for example in terms of rewards, requirements, or status and point systems used, it became hard to decipher research in this area and to systematically connect to previous work when conducting new research. Therefore, a systematic literature review is presented, comprising an analysis of the topic from both a thematic (i.e., core topics) as well as a structural lens (e.g., theories, methods, moderated relationships, outcomes). Ultimately, a research agenda is formulated. Due to the nature of this paper, the first iteration of this review is proposed alongside preliminary results and research questions as well as the remaining work expected to be completed by September 2024.
Factors behind Addiction to TikTok: An Empirical Investigation Leuphana University of Lüneburg, Germany The paper aims to understand the motives for using TikTok and explore factors behind addiction to this social media application. We lean on Van der Heijden's Model of User Acceptance of Hedonic Information Systems. The results of the survey among 112 young TikTok users suggest that ease of use is one of the main factors behind addictive tendencies.
