Responsible innovation is the purposeful creation and scaling of new solutions addressing today’s ecological, economic, and social challenges. Strategic leaders play a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of responsible innovation. Although research has examined the contributions of managers and entrepreneurs as key agents of strategic leadership in innovation, the strategic management and entrepreneurship traditions have largely evolved in parallel with limited interaction. This session aims to bridge this divide by convening leading scholars from both fields for a structured dialogue about the unique and overlapping characteristics, challenges, and opportunities of managers and entrepreneurs as strategic leaders in responsible innovation. What can both learn from each other in theory and practice? What is unique for either setting? Where are the boundaries of generalizability of our theories, as well as for transferring practice recommendations from one setting to another?

Through concise, evidence-based presentations followed by an interactive panel discussion, participants will explore how strategic leadership for responsible innovation evolves at the individual, team, organizational, and stakeholder levels in startups and incumbent firms. The session aims to compare and contrast research in these domains and identify synergies that can inform theory and practice. To structure the comparison, we employ a multi-level lens that spans individual influences, team and organizational factors, and the external stakeholder context.
