I-WK: Global Virtual Work: Interdisciplinary Perspectives and Integrative Approaches

| Zusammenfassung der Sitzung | ||
|
Globally operating organizations are currently facing profound changes. Historically, these organizations primarily relied on physical, cross-border exchanges of employees (e.g., expatriates or international business travelers) for collaborative efforts. However, recent megatrends such as the digital transformation and emerging work practices due to the COVID-19 pandemic have fundamentally reshaped the nature of global work. Today, multinational organizations are moving away from physical, cross-border employee exchanges and are instead increasingly relying on virtual forms of global collaboration, known as global virtual work. Research on global virtual work is primarily shaped by three distinct disciplines within the field of management: international management (global), information systems (virtual), and human resource management (work). Each of these disciplines already makes important contributions to understanding globally and virtually operating organizations. However, global virtual work is a multifaced form of collaboration and academic knowledge on the topic is fragmented across disciplines, often lacking an interdisciplinary perspective to integrate and further develop this dispersed knowledge. Therefore, the aim of the 'I-WK' is to bring together leading experts from the three disciplines involved in global virtual work to discuss urgent issues and develop ideas for future research. | ||
