The VHB 2026 conference theme “Responsible Innovation – Business Administration Shaping the Future” calls for a re-examination of the discipline’s foundational concepts. The panel “Beyond Profit” responds to this call by addressing one of the most fundamental questions of our time: How does business administration define value creation in the 21st century?
As ecological boundaries tighten, social inequality rises, and digital technologies become ever more autonomous, traditional notions of profit and performance are being challenged. This session explores how digitalization, artificial intelligence, and sustainability measurement reshape the understanding of organizational success and how new governance and ownership models can align purpose, participation, and long-term value.
At the same time, the panel addresses the growing societal, political, and institutional backlash against sustainability, diversity, and purpose initiatives, asking how research and education in business administration can contribute to maintaining legitimacy, fostering trust, and offering constructive visions of the future.
By engaging perspectives from organization, innovation, entrepreneurship, sustainability, and work sociology, the session bridges disciplinary boundaries and invites debate between utopian aspirations and dystopian risks. The goal is to develop a shared understanding of how business research can responsibly shape the future of value creation — beyond profit.
The session will take the form of a 90-minute interactive panel discussion, including: 1. Introductory framing (10 min): Setting the scene for “Beyond Profit”; 2. Panel discussion (50 min): Perspectives from research and governance; 3. Audience interaction (30 min): Open questions and participatory dialogue. The panelists are drawn from academia as well as practice:
