Checking Out AI: What Drives Artificial Intelligence Adoption Among Public Library Workers? North Carolina Central University, United States of America Public libraries are well-positioned to help communities navigate generative AI, but this depends on library workers adopting these tools themselves. Using the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), this pilot study surveyed 75 public library workers in North Carolina to identify the drivers of AI adoption. Performance expectancy was the strongest predictor of behavioral intention, with a marginal effect for social influence and no effect for effort expectancy. Behavioral intention, not facilitating conditions, predicted actual use. Nearly half of respondents reported never using AI at work, underscoring the need for policies that communicate AI's value.
