From frontier saloons to verified Prohibition-era speakeasies, Detroit's bars and taverns tell the stories of the people and events that shaped life during the 19th and 20th centuries. Join Detroit cultural historian and “barchaeologist” Mickey Lyons on this evening tour for a deep dive into some actual dives, as well as some family-run centenary saloons and lounges.
Mickey Lyons is a James Beard-nominated journalist, historian, and author living in Detroit. Her work has been featured in NBC News, Lonely Planet, and the Discovery Channel. She explores the intersection of beverage culture and American history in the industrial Midwest, especially in Detroit. Her current project is to map and research the history of all of Detroit's surviving Prohibition-era speakeasies.
This evening tour will be by bus and will leave from the Conference hotel, the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center, at 6:30 PM, and will return to the hotel at 9:30 PM. This bus tour includes transportation to and from all venues but does not include drinks purchased. Participants must be 21 years of age or older and must bring appropriate identification on this tour to verify age. |
