Session Abstract
Paul Mullins’ wide-ranging scholarship shaped the course of twenty-first-century historical and contemporary archaeology. His research was singular in its intellectual depth and dexterity, moving from the symbolism of bric-a-brac, and studies of consumption and racism in African American communities, to Finnish Civil War 1918-era monuments, doughnuts, and Barbie dolls. His impact extended far beyond his publications to include decades-long collaborations with communities in Indianapolis, training generations of students in applied anthropology, and leadership positions in the Society for Historical Archaeology. The forum consists of two parts, the first part is a series of 5-minute reflections presented by Paul’s colleagues. The talks are brief in order to: a) allow some of the many people who worked with Paul to share a memorable vignette or tribute, and: b) to honor Paul’s low tolerance for long-winded conference symposia. The last portion of the forum is an open discussion of Paul’s legacies moderated by the co-organizers.
