Session Abstract

n 1973, the Advisory Council on Underwater Archaeology (ACUA) was formally created at SHA to support academic and professional discussions about theories, methods, and interpretations of underwater archaeological projects. Born from the Council of Underwater Archaeology established in 1959, the ACUA continued the council’s initial discourse and expanded to advising an international body on issues relating to underwater archaeology and underwater cultural resource protection. In 2023, the ACUA celebrated its 50th anniversary. Since its formation in 1973, the ACUA has continued to support the field of underwater archaeology through professional training, policy support, and scholarly presentations and discussions. This forum discussion brings together past and present Board members from across different underwater archaeology industries and experience levels to explore the history of the ACUA, its importance in progressing the field of underwater archaeology, and the role of the ACUA in supporting the field as our world faces numerous changes.
