TOUR-2: Sailing the Coast: Forts and Ships

Session Abstract | |
We’ll begin this tour with a visit to Fort Point, dramatically situated directly beneath the Golden Gate Bridge. The Fort has been called "the Gibraltar of the West Coast," and "one of the most perfect models of masonry in America." When construction began during the height of the California Gold Rush, Fort Point was planned as the most formidable deterrence America could offer to a naval attack on California. Next, we’ll visit the WWII Liberty ship Jeremiah Obrien and Pampanito submarine. The tour will continue with a brief visit to the Maritime Museum. Finally, we’ll return via the NPS historic small craft warehouse in San Leandro for a behind the scenes look at vessels not on public display. |
